My favorite for cleaning, polishing, and stain removal is Barkeepers Friend. It comes in a shaker can, like "Comet," and I think it mostly contains borax. It does a great job cleaning stains out of the white, porcelain kitchen sink, removes hard water stains from the tub, and shines everything without scratching. I also buy Borax in a large box and use it as a laundry booster for odor removal.

My former mother-in-law taught me that if you put fresh lemon juice on stained whites and hang them out in the sun, the stain will disappear.

Also, a toxic brew of half bleach and half powdered dishwasher detergent mixed with very hot water will make any whites gleam.
