I think this goes on a lot more than we know about.
Being honest, i'm afraid, for some people is not a way of life. I have known people who have done this to be excepted into a certain group that they have felt people would perceive them as less than if they knew their real gender. Sad for the people that call them friends and don't know. More sad for the people that do it and are what IMO is an identity they are ashamed of.
