We watched The Handmaid's Tale last night.

I have some vague impressions:

It was intense and disturbing, but i was not traumatized.

I am seeing on social media that many have had really strong reactions, sobbing, shaking, etc. I don't know if this might be because i have read the book a bunch of times, and led a discussion about it earlier this year-- or because the religious mindset that produced that dystopia has always been part of my life.

I always found the book more grim than shocking, more of a validation than a revelation: "yep, that's exactly what would happen if my uncle had his way, this is a good reminder to keep an eye on him"

I did find that i had to explain a lot of what was going on to Mr. Jenny, who has not read the book. i am wondering if the script was written assuming most viewers would have read it. Either the exposition was confusing, or Mr. Jenny is impatient.

I got Hulu today just because I wanted to watch The Handmaid's Tale. I don't like Hulu so will keep it until the series is over.

I did read the book too, years ago. Margret Atwood, author. It is free with a Kindle Unlimited so I just downloaded it.

I am on the second episode of the Hulu series and I think it is very well done

I just keep thinking: It is a cautionary tale of a world that Trump, Pence and the Republicans would just love to have. I don't think we are terribly far off.

The government doesn't even need to be overthrown. The electoral college opened the door and let them walk right in.

At least I am not a handmaiden now.

I am a Martha.

The show doesn't upset me nor make me shake. Every day that I read more of what Trump and the gang are doing: that fucking upsets me.

Wiki says:

Set in a near-future New England, in a totalitarian theocracy which has overthrown the United States government, the novel explores themes of women in subjugation and the various means by which they gain individualism and independence.

I am half way through Season 2 of Grace & Frankie! (I know...it is "older" series, BUT I just began to watch!!).

I have thought about watching Handmaid's Tale....glad to see folks comment on it.

Interested in the new series 13 Reasons Why...about a 13 yr old who takes her own life & leaves 13 letters telling the reasons why..13 reasons...

while it may sound depressing, I find stories like this to be very profound, perhaps offering insight to other teens who may be struggling with these same thoughts. Suicide is something we will probably never understand. I had a parent do this when I was 16 yrs old.

I learned about another really good movie by coming across it by accident on YouTube, yesterday.

Steve Carrell, the guy who starred in Little Miss Sunshine, stars in the movie Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. It's a comedy drama, which is laced with darkish humor....but, I thought it was well done. The soundtrack to the movie, was pretty good too.

Black Sails is a Hulu series about Pirates. If you like Pirates, you will like Black Sails. I don't watch it everyday, but I enjoy it.

okay, Liam, thanks for letting me know!
My daughter likes shows like that, possibly, so I'll tell her about it and see if she's ever watched it before. I'm not a fan of pirate stuff, but she is. Thanks, Liam!

Pirates is rated for mature audiences. Bloody, gory, violence, could be triggering.

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011).
Holy crap, this movie was way beyond my expectations. I expected it to be a decent thriller, but it was dramatic and gut-wrenching in places. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242460/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt

Does anyone watch Catastrophe on Amazon Prime?

I have read really great reviews about it but never did.

I saw a clip on TV this morning that cracked me up and may now have to give it a try:

Wife comes in, husband on couch with just underpants on.

She says: Where are your trousers?

Hubby: I feel really fat, they were too tight, so I threw them away.

It just cracked me up. Part of the visual is that he has really, super-hairy legs.

The other part is that I could relate.

I have, on a rare occasion, worn pants that were too tight and was miserable all day.

This show is hilarious!

Right after I posted this a I binged all 3 seasons.

Rob Delany is truly funny.

Carrie Fisher plays his mom. This was the series that she was in and was coming back from London on the airplane, after shooting the last episode of season 3 when she died.

She was so funny as a curmudgeon MIL and mom in the series.

I don't know how they will handle it in season 4.

Don't let it stop you from watching it, it is great.

Post I'm watching....

I love Power. I watched seasons 1 & 2 and still have to catch up to this season. I can't just watch one episode, I tend to binge watch which always makes me feel so guilty.

I also love Suits, the show and the clothing.
