Lighten up and practice what you preach. If you've ever used the words "dyke", "queer" or "homo", then surely you can understand that words only have the power we assign them. "Retarded" can actually mean "slowed or lacking in maturation", which was my use. Your interpretation of it as "in poor taste" must come from your own misuse of the word to denigrate those with intellectual disabilities. Maybe you should look at that.

There is a difference in reclaiming words, using words to describe yourself, and using words as a put down, or to make others feel *less than* I personally never use a word in a negitive way to put anyone down.. I don't need to do that..

I have to say.. I absolutly love how you are attempting to imply that my objection to the word comes from my shame from using it to put people down.. It made me laugh... Do you use this tactic to shut people up often?

You didn't use Retarded in any form that you quoted.. I actually am pretty familure with the definitions..

Sorry, I'm not really good at lightening up.. To me when someone tell me to lighten up, I equate that with shut up... I choose not to do that..

It is not your call to decide how I meant it. If I'd called them... oh I dunno, Down Syndromed, Aspergered, Palsy-ated... well sure I could see you getting all riled up. If someone uses "socially retarded", does that affect your delicate sensibilities too?

My comment was made to two of my friends. I can see how it could alert the PC police. But you don't know me, so don't presume to know my intentions, my experiences with that word, or my heart. If I dissected everything you or friends of yours have said on the internet, I'm sure I could find plenty that would offend one person or another, without you having called them out.

One man's "retard" is another man's "gypped", "paddy wagon" or "indian giver", etc.

UofMfan- just out of curiosity (i know this sounds sarcastic but it really is an honest question), are moderators instructed to report every post with 'dyke' and 'fag' and 'queer'?

Mary. you seem intelligent enough to understand the difference between words you use with your mates who all get the irony and using provocative language in order to... I dunno or care what your motives are, nunomybiz. Personal Eg: I use some terms with my mates that I wouldn't use on a giganto board - nor would I ever use certain types of British humour here - it just wouldn't be "got" or appreciated by the wider view. Eg 2: I don't swear around children or at work but I use the words "fuck" "cunt" and "cockvomit" at the pub and with friends. Place/time yanno? I'm certain you get it.

I think the mod has informed you of what's not done here. Perhaps we should leave the bromolove intact, no? If you want to discuss with the mod, their actions, maybe you should IM the mod.
