Cravings:
Scientifically they are real, we really WANT something, and our body is asking us for it (Milk cravings mean you need calcium etc.) ..normally our body craves what it's deficient in. However it's been proven that after 3 bites the craving has actually been satisfied. The french folks love dessert, but they are TINY portions, (they also walk everywhere) so adopting this theory can help when it comes to eating that whole chocolate cheesecake or having a bite size chocolate candy! Also the average time a craving lasts is 10 minutes, I pop a piece of gum in my mouth (i do this while cooking too so I don't taste everything) and in just a few minutes the craving is all gone. |

I see a few folks above talking about counting carbs and calories and such. I use Livestrong's Myplate application. It's free and it sure keeps me honest. There are some things that I will get in to and shouldn't. Once I started entering everything in there regular, I got a better sense of what everything was doing to me. There are some things I just need to leave alone!
Currently, I'm working on a recipe of turkey breast chorizo that I made. It's my third attempt and this came out pretty good. Of course the thing that makes chorizo so damned good is the fat in the pork, so I figured I'd spice it up real good. 107 cal, 1.5g fat, 19g protein, 3.62g carbs. I add 1/2 cup of egg whites to it and one corn tortilla and that makes about a 270 calorie breakfast that makes you feel like you've actually eaten a meal. |

the other night I got some fresh made sushi summer rolls from Publix. sooo good! .. and I imagine more healthier than spring rolls, at least the fried ones. It is 232 calories for 2. However they do have carbs, sugar, and the fav addition of chinese food - sodium! I guess once every few months isn't gonna kill you and will satisfy your craving, could be worse! hehe.Happy Monday everybody! It's a sunny week here, so I imagine I'm gonna be walking/running a lot, hopefully on the beautiful beach. |

Pinkie, ever try Dr Pepper Ten ? It is actually pretty good and doesn't take away that regular flavor of a Dr. Pepper.

No, I haven't tried the Dr Pepper Ten... honestly, I don't think that I have ever seen it around here! I'm tell you, when I gave up Diet Coke, it was one of the hardest things ever! If I were to drink one Diet Coke now, I'ld end up drinking a 6 pack! Luckily, I can drink one Dr Pepper and be ok with that and switch right back to my water and/or iced tea.

As a recovering addict, I have sugar cravings that are out of this world. Does anyone else struggle with this? If so, any tips on getting through them? My sugar addiction is in full swing at this point and I am having a hard time reeling it in.

I found that trying to "just say no" to my sweet tooth didn't work. I know that's different from a full blown sugar addiction....but it was still a struggle. I did a step down approach...first going off of white sugar stuff and using stevia and honey and agave nectar instead. The honey and agave are still sugars, but they're natural and a lot easier for my body to handle even with diabetes. And honey has great health benefits as well. The stevia....well I think it's a miracle plant, and I'm getting ready to grow some. For me, using those ingredients to get my "sweet" for awhile took the frantic edge off the sugar cravings...and then I could ease away from them too. Best of luck....sugar is tough.

Thank you Jo.
I have heard a lot about agave nectar recently, I will give it a try. "Frantic edge" is a great way to describe it, that's exactly how it feels. Quote:

I must not eat sugar period, in any shape or form other than what is in fruit. It takes me 10 days off of any sugar to totally lose the craving. I last fell off the wagon around 10/10 and am again free of the craving. Good luck and hang in there, it does pass!

Yeah, I think I will have to eventually get there as much as I hate to think of it. When I fall, I fall hard. Do you use artificial sweeteners? I think it may add to My cravings...things like diet sodas, etc.

i, too, am a recovering addict.. sugar addict and just plain food addict.. also been diagnosed as a binger & purger, bulemic. my addiction is my struggle every single day, i attend meetings daily and have a number of tools that keep me focused each day.. This journey is still very new to me still, only just recently sought help, but have lived with the addiction and eating disorder for years. It's very hard to reel in, and i personally, have to be abstinent from all the foods that i can't control and have a hard time with.. Though i still have some hard days, it's a different kind of control when abstinent, and it's very difficult either way, but i feel i can celebrate my accomplishments more often this way..in turn, i grow confidence, self esteem and am a stronger me.. i have to take it day to day though. i'm not yet ready to start counting the days i've been abstinent - because i'm still dealing with challenges everyday, but doing the hard work has paid off for me, in many ways..i think that no one walks the very same journey, what might work for me might not work for You, but definitely feel everything out and be real with Yourself.. i also find voicing my addiction and making myself accountable with others, whether my partner, co-workers, friends, online - it helps me stay real.. i'm certainly not proud of what i've done over the years, but everyday i am more proud of the girl who's taking control. This is probably more information than you needed, but i can't help but get passionate about the journey i am on.. heh.. Hope you find things that do work for you! ps, i don't use artificial sweeteners either...in fact, if it's fresh i eat it.. no processed foods for me either, i keep a very low sodium diet.. but for me, artificial sweeteners give that same taste that sends me reeling - like sugar.. Merely the taste is all it takes for me... so i stay off completely..

Well, after some soulsearching, I've decided that in addition to WW, I am also gonna check out Overeaters Anonymous. http://www.oa.org
While my determination is strong... I still feel like sometimes I'm losing a fighting battle. Yes, the weight is coming off slowly but surely, but I need to understand better WHY I allowed myself to get to this point and how I need to fix the issues around my overeating. Yeah, it's easy to say that YES, I like to eat. But, I also know I eat for lots of other reasons, too. So, I found that the local OA meets, within 10 miles of my house, every Wednesday. So, I'm thinking about checking it out tonight. |
