I wanted to be an astronomer - the vastness of space fascinated me. I abandoned that goal when I found out that it generally requires a couple PhD's, that you rarely get to look through powerful telescopes in practice, and that the pay wasn't stellar. (I couldn't help myself, I had to slip that pun in...)
