I think for the most part the internet has been a great service for many people, myself included. I would definitely be most unhappy were I forced to go without the net for a year. I gave up smoking, and I gave up cable. I refuse to give up the internet.
I may be slightly addicted, but it is for good cause. I take online classes, I research and learn things from the net, that I otherwise might not have the opportunity to learn. Just from reading Medusa's opening post I learned of "a completely fucked up world of jackassery" This statement provides me with a perfect visual of a world of dunderheads running amok in a land much like Oz, but not. I may never have heard of this jackassery word had I not had the internet.  In summary, for me the internet is first a powerful learning tool, and second a form of social interaction and entertainment.
