I've finished up Foyles War and truly enjoyed it.

I'm now onto Wallander (Brit version) about 4 episodes in and have another winner! May want to watch the Swede version too.

As long as the US doesn't get ahold of it, we'll be fine.

I was kinda disappointed with Kevin Spacey's 'House of Cards'. I thought I would love it since I'm a huge political nerd, but it just seemed a bit off somehow-- the political scandals didn't really ring true and were somehow less disturbing than a lot of real political scandals.

'Never Sorry' about Ai Wei Wei is really interesting and inspiring as is 'How to Survive a Plague'.

I just found another lovely BBC series, Larks Rise to Candleford. I am already in love with the cast of characters, some of the actors are from my other new favorite, Downton Abbey, and there is the added bonus of a series that includes Dawn French, whom I can't seem to get enough of! There are already 4 seasons available, and IMDB shows that the series is still active.

It is not on Netflix, it is on Amazon Prime (free movies/tv shows with yearly membership). I didn't think anyone would mind if I posted about Amazon Prime programs here, because it is also a streaming service, and I just didn't see the need for a whole new thread.

this is a huluplus recommendation (not netflix)

"The Long Way Down" and "The Long Way Round"

Ewan McGregor and his best buddy plan two epic journeys on their motorcycles with limited support staff.

In 'The Long Way Down' they drive from Scotland to South Africa.

And in the 'The Long Way Round' they drive from London to New York, the eastern route (via Russia, the 'Stans, Alaska, Canada and finally the continental US)

This was a film recommended by someone I adore.

"There are five boys in the Beaulieu family -- Christian, Raymond, Antoine, Zachary and Yvan. But Zac (played by Emile Vallee and Marc-Andre Grondin) is the only one who's gay. That's why growing up in Montreal alongside his heterosexual brothers and his strict, emotionally distant father (Michel Cote) proves especially challenging for the blossoming outsider, who finds solace in the music of Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie."

It is a French Canadian film about the relationship between a gay son and his father. The film spans the 60s-80s and has a pretty fantastic soundtrack, the humor is quirky and intelligent.

Let The Right One In

"Twelve-year-old Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), the constant target of bullies, spends his time plotting revenge and collecting news items about the grisly murders plaguing his town. But things change when he meets a new girl named Eli (Lina Leandersson), a misfit vampire who steals his heart. As a serial killer continues to prey on teen boys in their small Swedish village, Eli helps Oskar find the courage to stand up to his tormenters."

Has anyone else seen this? I have friends who loved it...I expected to...
but it was too dark and twisted for me. I watched it, but it took me weeks to finish it. I wonder what others think?

The Girl Who Played With Fire

"Tech expert Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) becomes the prime suspect when two journalists, including Dag Svensson (Hans Christian Thulin), die after Millennium magazine publisher Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) launches an exposé of the Swedish sex trade. In Part 2 of the trilogy based on the action novels of Stieg Larsson, the vampiric Salander vanishes as Blomkvist digs deep into a possible conspiracy."

For those of you who have read the Millennium Trilogy, film #2.

(ever see 'La Femme Nikita'? and then have the misfortune of watching 'Point of No Return'?)

Read (and then see) the Millennium Trilogy now, before it is dumbed down.

Aimee & Jaguar

Based on the memoirs of Lilly Wust, this is the story of two women who fall in love in 1943 Berlin: Lilly (Juliane Köhler), the wife of a Nazi officer, and Felice (Maria Schrader), a Jewish journalist. When the two women begin their affair, they rechristen themselves Aimée and Jaguar to help avoid detection. They then set up housekeeping and try to tune out the war, but the Gestapo is never far behind.
I completely agree with you also about the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.Noomi rocked that movie like she WAS the character.I read the books she was so perfect casting

Did anyone see Albert Nobbs with Glenn Close? This is an amazing film.

Having for decades disguised herself as a man while working as a butler in a posh 19th-century Dublin hotel, a woman calling herself Albert Nobbs reconsiders her charade when a handsome painter arrives on the scene.

Holly I love love Downton Abby~! I'm addicted to it. I can't wait for season 4. I had to buy season 3 from Itunes.

Yes, post Amazon Prime! I love love Prime not only for the fast FREE shipping which pays for the cost of membership but the videos and books. I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tablet that I love but kept my kindle fire just for amazon movies.

Default Love me some Abbey too--

Downton Abbey is such a wonderful piece of television; all the characters have wonderful range and such authentic emotional texture, I'm quote enjoying it! <<<< said with a British accent of course.

There have been few filmmakers who have enchanted me consistently like the work of Australian Peter Weir. More recently you may have appreciated his "Master and Commander" with Russell Crowe--

but earlier work like "Gallipoli", a coming of age/redemption/war is stupid/duty and honor (starring a young and virtually unknown fellow Aussie Mel Gibson)---

"Picnic at Hanging Rock" (thinly veiled homoerotic girls/women and some weird local legend, beautifully shot)--

"The Year of Living Dangerously" (an amazing film starring Gibson again, paired with Sigourney Weaver and introducing Linda Hunt AS A MAN / she won the Oscar for her role)

Thanks all for the other suggestions, I'll definitely be spending some quality time with Netflix soon! Hope you're all having a nice Sunday--
