Unique Community Kitchen Is Set Up Like a Restaurant So Homeless Can Dine With Dignity

Although it’s a soup kitchen for the homeless, Kansas City Community Kitchen is set up to resemble a real restaurant, complete with greeters, waiters, and fancy restaurant-quality meals. The idea is to treat the homeless with respect and allow them to enjoy their meal with dignity.









“We are trying to flip the photo of what a soup kitchen looks like,” explained Mandy Caruso-Yahne, directory of community engagement at Episcopal, adding that everyone is welcome in the kitchen, homeless or not.

Curry, who is also the owner of Kansas City restaurant Lil’ Bubba, revealed that he had once lived in poverty and depended on soup kitchens for his daily meals. So he’s happy to be able to give back to the community by developing a variety of interesting and healthy dishes for the menu. He even takes into consideration dietary restrictions based on health conditions or religious beliefs, and asks diners for reviews and suggestions. A lunch plate during Lent, for example, consisted of spiced swai, broccoli cheese casserole, garlic-Parmesan fries with house ketchup, and simple greens salad with tomato-water vinaigrette.

Gigantic Wind Turbine With 650 Foot Blades Will Channel the Power of Hurricanes

The DOE wants to step up its wind energy game in a big way. And I mean big. Sandia National Laboratories has been tasked with the challenge of designing an offshore wind turbine that can spin out 50 megawatts of carbon-free juice—using 650 foot blades that harness the fiercest winds on Earth.

Take a second to try and picture that. 650 feet is just shy of two football fields. It’s a hundred feet higher than the Washington Monument. And it’s about five times longer than the rotor blades of most offshore wind turbines today, which produce power in the 1-2 megawatt range. (Japan is currently a leader in massive offshore wind structures, with a 7 megawatt beast of a turbine that sports 270 foot-long blades.)

It sounds damn ambitious, but if we want to start generating wind energy at scale, we need to dream big.



For one, the turbine would stand on a lightweight, segmented trunk that bends in the breeze without snapping. The blades will also be segmented, allowing them to fold in at high wind speeds to minimize the risk of damage. On calmer days, the turbine would fan out to its jaw-dropping, 1300-foot span in order to maximize energy production.

The entire system is similar to a palm tree, which, by shuttering up and facing the wind during hurricanes, can withstand gusts of up to 200 miles per hour. Today, regions of the world that experience severe storms—and the strongest, most energy-rich winds—are dangerous for turbines.

Tammy Duckworth, a true American hero had a good night


Anti-gay U.S. Rep. from Illinois faces challenge from LGBT advocate



The anti-gay current representative of the 8th congressional district of Illinois faces a tight battle for reelection to the U.S. House in November, and is being challenged by LGBT advocate Tammy Duckworth.

The district — led by U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) — recently received a superlative from the National Journal as the third most likely to be surrendered to an opposition party.

The only districts more likely than Walsh’s to change hands, according to the report, both have representatives who will be retiring. This is bad news for Walsh, a Tea Party Republican, who was elected just last year.

Duckworth, Walsh’s Democratic competition, serves as an antithesis to Walsh on many issues. Walsh has been quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times as supporting the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

“I believe that DOMA is constitutional and that society and government should protect marriage as a relationship between one man and one woman,” Walsh said.

However, Duckworth — the former Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and former director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs — fully supports the civil rights of LGBT individuals.

In a statement, Duckworth talked about her experience in the military — where she lost both of her legs and part of the use of her right arm when her Black Hawk helicopter was shot down — and how it shaped her views on gay marriage. Her husband was able to make major medical decisions when she could not and she feels that everyone should have that same right.
