I must not eat sugar period, in any shape or form other than what is in fruit. It takes me 10 days off of any sugar to totally lose the craving. I last fell off the wagon around 10/10 and am again free of the craving. Good luck and hang in there, it does pass!

Yeah, I think I will have to eventually get there as much as I hate to think of it. When I fall, I fall hard. Do you use artificial sweeteners? I think it may add to My cravings...things like diet sodas, etc.

Getting off the artificial sweeteners was one of the best things I've done for myself. I still slip (every once in a great while) and have a Coke Zero....but I have to be vigilant or it can start the cycle all over again for me. I think it's one of those things that makes this a journey...we're all different. Anya brought up a great example...she has to avoid all sweets completely. I can safely have a little, as long as it's the "right" stuff. Some people here use the artifical sweetened stuff and it helps them stay on track. For me, they're horrible. It's a process of getting to know your own body and how things work for you. ![]()

"All of the 4 artificial sweeteners are nasty chemicals that the human body is simply not meant to ingest. However, most of us are ingesting a whole lot of these chemicals on a daily basis. Aside from the problems I touched on so far, other health issues that have been related to artificial sweeteners in scientific studies as well as observations are:
some have been linked to potential cancer risks negative effects on the liver, kidneys, and other organs stimulating cravings gastrointestinal problems developmental problems in children and fetuses headaches and too many more issues to list Now some of the above potential health problems are definitely not proven as fact in studies. However, some of them have been shown in animal studies given high doses. Also, if you do some research, you'll find hoardes of people that attribute the use of artificial sweeteners over the years with all sorts of illnesses in themselves or in family members. Regardless of the fact that any real health problems for actual human use are not proven yet, I don't know about you, but I'd rather protect myself and my family and steer clear of these possibly dangerous artificial chemicals. Of course, despite all of the health issues potentially associated with artificial sweeteners, the companies that sell the products will continue to claim that they are fully safe. Don't believe them! The bottom line is that the body was not designed to deal with foreign substances like artificial sweeteners. Take my word on that one." Artificial sweeteners trick the pancreas into releasing insulin then it does not get the real sugar and things are all out of whack. Sugar craving is not a lifelong thing, like what was said earlier, once you break the sugar craving it won't come back. We also have to remember that starches break down in sugar in our bodies so laying off the preprocessed carbs is part of breaking the sugar addiction. |

Facts on artificial sweetners:
Key Points Artificial sweeteners are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (see Question 1). There is no clear evidence that the artificial sweeteners available commercially in the United States are associated with cancer risk in humans (see Question 2). Studies have been conducted on the safety of several artificial sweeteners, including saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, neotame, and cyclamate (see Question 3). What are artificial sweeteners and how are they regulated in the United States? Artificial sweeteners, also called sugar substitutes, are substances that are used instead of sucrose (table sugar) to sweeten foods and beverages. Because artificial sweeteners are many times sweeter than table sugar, smaller amounts are needed to create the same level of sweetness. Artificial sweeteners are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA, like the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. The FDA regulates food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, biologics, and radiation-emitting products. The Food Additives Amendment to the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which was passed by Congress in 1958, requires the FDA to approve food additives, including artificial sweeteners, before they can be made available for sale in the United States. However, this legislation does not apply to products that are “generally recognized as safe.” Such products do not require FDA approval before being marketed. Is there an association between artificial sweeteners and cancer? Questions about artificial sweeteners and cancer arose when early studies showed that cyclamate in combination with saccharin caused bladder cancer in laboratory animals. However, results from subsequent carcinogenicity studies (studies that examine whether a substance can cause cancer) of these sweeteners have not provided clear evidence of an association with cancer in humans. Similarly, studies of other FDA-approved sweeteners have not demonstrated clear evidence of an association with cancer in humans. What have studies shown about a possible association between specific artificial sweeteners and cancer? Saccharin Studies in laboratory rats during the early 1970s linked saccharin with the development of bladder cancer. For this reason, Congress mandated that further studies of saccharin be performed and required that all food containing saccharin bear the following warning label: “Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin, which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals.” Subsequent studies in rats showed an increased incidence of urinary bladder cancer at high doses of saccharin, especially in male rats. However, mechanistic studies (studies that examine how a substance works in the body) have shown that these results apply only to rats. Human epidemiology studies (studies of patterns, causes, and control of diseases in groups of people) have shown no consistent evidence that saccharin is associated with bladder cancer incidence. Because the bladder tumors seen in rats are due to a mechanism not relevant to humans and because there is no clear evidence that saccharin causes cancer in humans, saccharin was delisted in 2000 from the U.S. National Toxicology Program’s Report on Carcinogens, where it had been listed since 1981 as a substance reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen (a substance known to cause cancer). More information about the delisting of saccharin is available at http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/ele...ppend/appb.pdf on the Internet. The delisting led to legislation, which was signed into law on December 21, 2000, repealing the warning label requirement for products containing saccharin. Aspartame Aspartame, distributed under several trade names (e.g., NutraSweet® and Equal®), was approved in 1981 by the FDA after numerous tests showed that it did not cause cancer or other adverse effects in laboratory animals. Questions regarding the safety of aspartame were renewed by a 1996 report suggesting that an increase in the number of people with brain tumors between 1975 and 1992 might be associated with the introduction and use of this sweetener in the United States. However, an analysis of then-current NCI statistics showed that the overall incidence of brain and central nervous system cancers began to rise in 1973, 8 years prior to the approval of aspartame, and continued to rise until 1985. Moreover, increases in overall brain cancer incidence occurred primarily in people age 70 and older, a group that was not exposed to the highest doses of aspartame since its introduction. These data do not establish a clear link between the consumption of aspartame and the development of brain tumors. In 2005, a laboratory study found more lymphomas and leukemias in rats fed very high doses of aspartame (equivalent to drinking 8 to 2,083 cans of diet soda daily) (1). However, there were some inconsistencies in the findings. For example, the number of cancer cases did not rise with increasing amounts of aspartame as would be expected. An FDA statement on this study can be found at http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsro.../ucm108650.htm on the Internet. Subsequently, NCI examined human data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study of over half a million retirees. Increasing consumption of aspartame-containing beverages was not associated with the development of lymphoma, leukemia, or brain cancer (2). Acesulfame potassium, Sucralose, and Neotame In addition to saccharin and aspartame, three other artificial sweeteners are currently permitted for use in food in the United States: Acesulfame potassium (also known as ACK, Sweet One®, and Sunett®) was approved by the FDA in 1988 for use in specific food and beverage categories, and was later approved as a general purpose sweetener (except in meat and poultry) in 2002. Sucralose (also known as Splenda®) was approved by the FDA as a tabletop sweetener in 1998, followed by approval as a general purpose sweetener in 1999. Neotame, which is similar to aspartame, was approved by the FDA as a general purpose sweetener (except in meat and poultry) in 2002. Before approving these sweeteners, the FDA reviewed more than 100 safety studies that were conducted on each sweetener, including studies to assess cancer risk. The results of these studies showed no evidence that these sweeteners cause cancer or pose any other threat to human health. Cyclamate Because the findings in rats suggested that cyclamate might increase the risk of bladder cancer in humans, the FDA banned the use of cyclamate in 1969. After reexamination of cyclamate’s carcinogenicity and the evaluation of additional data, scientists concluded that cyclamate was not a carcinogen or a co-carcinogen (a substance that enhances the effect of a cancer-causing substance). A food additive petition was filed with the FDA for the reapproval of cyclamate, but this petition is currently being held in abeyance (not actively being considered). The FDA’s concerns about cyclamate are not cancer related. Where can people find additional information about artificial sweeteners? i, too, am a recovering addict.. sugar addict and just plain food addict.. also been diagnosed as a binger & purger, bulemic. my addiction is my struggle every single day, i attend meetings daily and have a number of tools that keep me focused each day.. This journey is still very new to me still, only just recently sought help, but have lived with the addiction and eating disorder for years. It's very hard to reel in, and i personally, have to be abstinent from all the foods that i can't control and have a hard time with.. Though i still have some hard days, it's a different kind of control when abstinent, and it's very difficult either way, but i feel i can celebrate my accomplishments more often this way..in turn, i grow confidence, self esteem and am a stronger me.. i have to take it day to day though. i'm not yet ready to start counting the days i've been abstinent - because i'm still dealing with challenges everyday, but doing the hard work has paid off for me, in many ways..i think that no one walks the very same journey, what might work for me might not work for You, but definitely feel everything out and be real with Yourself.. i also find voicing my addiction and making myself accountable with others, whether my partner, co-workers, friends, online - it helps me stay real.. i'm certainly not proud of what i've done over the years, but everyday i am more proud of the girl who's taking control. This is probably more information than you needed, but i can't help but get passionate about the journey i am on.. heh.. Hope you find things that do work for you! ps, i don't use artificial sweeteners either...in fact, if it's fresh i eat it.. no processed foods for me either, i keep a very low sodium diet.. but for me, artificial sweeteners give that same taste that sends me reeling - like sugar.. Merely the taste is all it takes for me... so i stay off completely..

Well, after some soulsearching, I've decided that in addition to WW, I am also gonna check out Overeaters Anonymous. http://www.oa.org
While my determination is strong... I still feel like sometimes I'm losing a fighting battle. Yes, the weight is coming off slowly but surely, but I need to understand better WHY I allowed myself to get to this point and how I need to fix the issues around my overeating. Yeah, it's easy to say that YES, I like to eat. But, I also know I eat for lots of other reasons, too. So, I found that the local OA meets, within 10 miles of my house, every Wednesday. So, I'm thinking about checking it out tonight. |

Thank y'all for such encouraging words.
You know, I've gone back & forth wondering if OA might be another step along this journey for me. WW has been great and I'm very thankful for the tools that I've been learning. The program works.... we've seen so many success stories. Yes, WW has made me more mindful of every single thing I put in my mouth and helped me focus more as food for fuel kinda mentality. I am thankful for being able to learn those tools and look forward to pushing past this mental barrier I have going right now. Problem is, I've caught myself a couple times in the last month or so, in full binge mode. All the food & activity tracking didn't help me for squat when I got in that destructive mindset. While hiding in the kitchen, shoving raw cookie dough in my mouth, I question WHY am I sabatoging myself?! I'm hoping that if I can just scratch below the surface to see how/why I relate to food, the better my chances for continued success will be. I want to learn tools to stop myself before I see self destructive behaviors pop up... how to recognize it, and put myself in check. Thank y'all again for being the best group of supportive, encouraging friends I could have ever asked for! |

Hi All,
Well, I am no longer going to be part of this thread until I get my act together. I haven't been doing well for a few months now. I've been wicked bad... I'll spare you the details of what I've been consuming for food, and to be honest my tastebuds have been beyond happy....My gut on the otherhand has not. I'm proud of all you peeps for doing well and if not doing so well, for getting back on the wagon and trying again... I'll be back in a month or so but wanted to say a quick hello and give you some status on myself. Wishing you all the very best. Hugs 'n stuff, -Scorp- |
