I saw two movies tonight and both were visually spectacular.
I saw this movie and liked it. It's an interesting twist on an old story. And I saw this one in the theatre with a ton of people, including at least one baby under the age of 1, who should not have been there but I guess they didn't have a babysitter. There were a ton of excellent things to extol about this movie, including just how funny it was, but there are a couple of things that bugged me. I won't go all spoiler alert central station but I will say that Mark Hamill clearly has a kickass agent for second billing and having an assistant. |

Saw this yesterday.
I liked it a lot, though I thought it was hyped up to much. Its trying to appeal to the first fans as well as a new generation. Its basically the same story as we have seen before, but with a new ppl as well as some of the original cast. There are a few twists that are different. The air battles are great. Worth going to see,but I was left feeling a bit deflated. Judge for yourselves. |

The Big Short.
It was good, but I really didn't care for it. The focus of the film is on the crooks, not the investigation. All The Presidents Men, Zodiac, and Spotlight are films that focus on finding the truth, opposed to making the crooks (or bad guys) look good. A bunch of realtors were watching the movie, too, and those loud asses were cheering on the crooks. As we all know, the little guy or the everyday guy was the big loser in the housing bust of 2008, not the crooks (banks and Wall Street). One good thing ... A lot of people blamed immigrants and poor people for the housing bust (snort), when the real problem was the bankking deregulation in the 1980s that allowed lenders to offer sub-prime mortgages that were then re-packaged into bundles and sold to investors. They did show that. Still, I left with the feeling that the crooks were glorified. Maybe it's because of the crowd I watched it with. So all that put together left me not really enjoying the good performances. I'll watch it again when it comes out on DVD to see if I feel the same. I'll be interested to hear what others think about this. |

Phoenix : 2014 Ronald Zehrfeld Nina Hoss)
A disfigured concentration-camp survivor , unrecognizable after facial reconstruction surgery, searches ravaged postwar Berlin for the husband who might have betrayed her to the Nazis. This does move a bit slow, and it's subtitled for you's who don't care for them BUT what a movie! I can't recommend it enough ![]() |

A good friend of mine, who lives in Kauai, saw a closed private screening of The Revenant (Leonardo DiCaprio, 2015) yesterday. Robert said that the 2.5 hour suspense thriller movie will probably earn DiCaprio another award for best actor.
It opens nation wide on January 8th, so I'm definitely going to see this movie, after the new year gets underway.

I watched Howards End this morning....
I could've sworn that I had seen it before...but it wasn't the movie I thought it was at all. I have to Google the movie where Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson play butler and housekeeper in a very large house. That's the movie I thought I was seeing. Either way, I was in the mood for a historical drama and it suited me...right up until the end. It seemed rather abrupt.

Joy
I really liked this movie, but I'm a sap for David O. Russell movies. I "get" his dysfunctional people. I know them. I have relatives, friends, coworkers, and hairdressers like them. Hell, I am one of them; working class blokes trying to live the American dream. Joy is based on a true story about single mom who's good at inventing things. There are improbable moments, but I was able to accept them. I thought everyone was good, especially De Niro, Lawrence, and Rossellini. This is another one I'll watch when it comes out on DVD. And the music was good too, not as good as the soundtrack on American Hustle (another one of Russell's films), but it was good. |

Pawn Sacrifice 2014 Stars: Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber, Peter Sarsgaard
Set during the Cold War, American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer finds himself caught between two superpowers and his own struggles as he challenges the Soviet Empire. Good cast, good acting, it was OK, nothing special tho IMHO ![]() |

I streamed Heartburn, 1986.
Starring Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Stockard Channing, Jeff Daniels. It's about the love affair and marriage of Nora Ephon and Carl Bernstein. I enjoyed it, as I did the first time I saw it. Thought there were sweet, funny, and sad moments. This movie got a some bad press when it came out. I found Ebert's review online and he came down hard on Ephron. Called her mean and said she wrote a bitter movie. He even said she should have written about someone else's marriage. Har! Bitter? (a word never used to describe a man, mind you) The only thing bitter was Ebert's review. Ephron just didn't sugar coat the bad parts of their relationship. Glad I watched it again. Also, it has "Coming Around Again" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" sung by Carly Simon: |

I watched No Country for Old Men last night....
I was at Walmart and it was in the bin of $4 movies. Apparently it won an Oscar? I don't know what year.. it was wicked good. Its one you have to watch over again. Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin star and I enjoy them both. The plot is kinda all over the place. But truly it was a great flick. The Coen brothers directed it and I've like their stuff previously. They tend to make loopy kind of movies...in a good way lol
