Her eyes were used to
The dark by now
For they had seen
So much of it,
Too much for an entire
Lifetime.
Glimpses of light only
Scarcely lit up the pit
She had made her home,
Not by choice but
With certainty that nothing
Above would be worth
Discovering anymore.
She felt as if life
Had been beaten out of her
By those lifeless eyes,
Harsh words and cruel
Realities,
Like glaring into blinding
Sunlight,
And the emptiness that followed
Over time was unbearable
To ignore,
Her spirit faded continuously,
Irreperable damage was
Caused to her heart
By stretching it into all
The directions, she wasn't
Prepared to follow,
Ripping at the core
Of her being and changing
The very fabric of her thinking.
So she hid and suffered
And bled, ready to meet
Her maker, undone
And in all essence dead
To the world.
But in here her own light
Began to be visible,
For the first time she
Recognised a vague sense
Of herself,
Heard her heartbeat, soothed
Into sleep by her own breathing,
A hint of a spirit returned,
Wounds slowly scared over,
Accumulated from
The battlefield above.
Some called her a
Coward for hiding away,
Came to her retreat to lure
Her back into the light,
No, not because they cared
But for their own gain
And self gratification.
By now she had learned
How to tolerate
At least their voices,
She understood
How best to blend in,
Even though most of her body
Stays behind in the dark.
At the entry of the pit she
Remains silently to witness the
Only thing making sense
To her these days,
When the sun sets in the sky,
Telling her it is safe to come out.
People are different at night
She has learned,
The outline of their faces
Seems softened by the dimmed lights,
Their voices tired
From the events of the day
And for once she feels
A little less haunted
By their looks and a little more
Comfortable in her own skin.
