Sigh.
It is nearly impossible. I am going to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in December and am going to try to learn as much as I can about these cultures that seem like enigmas to me. And...I'm gonna try not to pee my pants!!

Novela... How fabulous you are going to Saudi Arabia. I hope this experience is enlightening for you and teaches you something about their culture. I lived in the middle east many years ago, and the culture is as foreign as can be.

I am hoping to go to Afghanistan or Liberia next year for work. And I can only hope the experience enlightens me as well.

Safe Travels and take lots of photos... But before photographing, check the laws of what is okay to shoot and not.

Great point! Before the unfortunate economy collapse my place of work was going to be doing business in Dubai, and in reserching I found that photograps are often not a good idea, especially around airports, government buildings, etc.

It sounded like an awkward place to be for a woman or anyone different..and Dubai is one of the more liberal places.

Thank you, IF! I am attending a Saudi meet and greet/info session soon and have a list of questions. I am super excited to be included in this opportunity and have heard many great accounts from a couple friends of their time spent in Jeddah.

I am very saddened to see that the UN took this stance. In this past year I have been following the treatment of Queers in Uganda. I have brought this to the attention of others and one time to the attention of a female butch minister of a church that brought an official Ugandan contigency to her church to perform. The minister made no mention of the astrocities happening in Uganda nor any response to my email.

I have supported the work of the UN for many years and now, I see again, to some, humanity, the right to live and thrive is not meant for people like me.

Good thing I do not buy into what they may think.

Default UN Votes to restore sexual orientation...

http://www.towleroad.com/2010/12/bre...arbitrary.html

"The assembly on Tuesday voted 93 in favor of the United States' proposal to restore the previous language, with 55 countries against and 27 abstaining. The assembly then approved the amended resolution 122 in favor, with 0 votes against, and 59 abstentions.

Ambassador Susan Rice led the efforts to reinsert the resolution..."

Cultural or not, the flames have certainly been fanned by some evangelical Christian groups in counties such as Uganda. I know this is old news for many, but it still amazes me: link

"Homophobia has always existed in Uganda," (a gay Ugandan man) says. "But I would say it's greatly increased over the past two years, ever since American evangelicals came to Uganda."

Specifically, he's referring to a conference in March 2009, when three Americans spoke to hundreds of people in Kampala about homosexuality. One of them was Scott Lively, who told the group: "The gay movement is an evil institution. The goal of the gay movement is to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity."

It saddens me beyond words. Thank goodness the matter is being revisited by the UN. Better late than never.
