Default Grrrrrrrrrr Kashi!

http://preventdisease.com/news/12/04...at-It-is.shtml

Exposing Kashi Cereal For The Poison That It Is

There is an established misconception among consumers that natural or even organic labeling means more nutritious and less toxic ingredients. This is not always the case and breakfast cereals are no exception. The Kashi brand is owned by Kellogg Company, one of the largest breakfast cereal makers in the world. The ownership base of Kashi is still not widely recognized or common knowledge, especially since the Kashi website continues to paint a picture of being a small company. Investigations into Kashi cereals show deceiving claims after their breakfast products were found to be riddled with genetically modified (GM) and pesticide loaded ingredients.

The deception at Kashi runs deep, especially when it comes to its association with Kellogg which is kept very discreet from the public.
"We are a small (after 25 years, still fewer than 70 of us) band of passionate people," it says, despite being owned by the nation's largest cereal manufacturer. Kellogg does not include its name on Kashi packaging.

The Cornucopia Institute's "Cereal Crimes" investigation uncovered some distrubing facts about this supposed natural breakfast cereal. The investigations found that Kashi brand cereals contain "high levels" of genetically engineered ingredients. These include soy and corn based ingredients.

For non-organic "natural" products making "non-GMO" claims, results showed that these claims cannot always be trusted.

Most companies do not share detailed standards for "natural" foods with the public. Kashi would likely be uncomfortable sharing with their
customers that their "natural" foods contain hexane-extracted and genetically engineered soy ingredients.

On August 31, 2011, a class action lawsuit was filed against Kashi for allegedly misleading consumers with its "natural" claims. One Kashi
product in particular, GoLean Shakes, is composed almost entirely of synthetic and unnaturally processed ingredients, according to the plaintiff.

Kashi Heart to Heart Blueberry Cereal was found to contain organophosphate pesticides implicated as causes of neuropathy in humans.

"Natural" Kashi Golean Honey almond Flax was found to contain malathion in the wheat and chlorpyrifos and piperonyl butoxide in the almonds both which are prohibited in organics due to their neurotoxicity and hormone disrupting ability in mammals.

Other toxic ingredients in Kashi cereals include GM canola oil, GM corn flour, GM corn meal, GM corn bran, irradiated cinnamon and soy lecithin.

Golean Original Cereal contains GM soy grits and protein, GM corn meal, GM corn flour and GM corn bran.

Golean Crisp! Cinnamon Crumble contains GM soy grits and protein, GM canola oil, GM corn flour, irradiated cinnamon and soy lecithin.

Golean Crisp! Toasted Berry Crumble contains GM soy grits and protein, GM canola oil, GM corn flour and soy lecithin.

All other Golean products contain similar toxins in their ingredient lists.

Kashi sources all of their grains from farms in the US. They do import some fruits from other countries, but the soy is primarily grown in the USA. Corn-based ingredients are also locally derived. Since 95% of Soy and 80% of Corn is Genetically Modified you can expect any non-organic product that contains either of these two ingredients to be GM.

Kashi has attempted to improve their public image by joining the Non-GMO Project and have their products tested and verified to be GMO-free. The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization which offers North America’s only third party verification and labeling for non-GMO food and products.Their standard includes the following;
"Absence of all GMOs is the target for all Non-GMO Project Standard compliant products. Continuous improvement practices toward achieving this goal must be part of the Participant’s quality management systems."
However since cross pollination can occur, there is never enough testing procedures to follow-up on every single grower's operation. That's why many products still contain GM corn and soy, despite being enrolled in the Non-GMO Project. According to the Cornucopia Institute, the Non-GMO Project "enrolls" products before it verifies them as being non-GMO which doesn't make very much sense.

It is in your best interest to stay away from anything Kashi or Kellogg. Always remember that "natural" and even some "organic" standards depend on how these standards impact profitability. Environmental
concerns are unlikely to weigh heavily, if at all, in this profitability equation. If the company is a publicly traded corporation, such as Kellogg Company their primary legal responsibility is to increase
profits for shareholders. Consumer opinion is insignificant until it reaches the masses and a full boycott is achieved. So how many people will you share this with? Only you can make a difference.

Default "FRESH" the Documentary

Uploaded by CFItube on Sep 24, 2010

Fresh is a new documentary celebrating the rising movement of farmers, thinkers and business people who are reinventing our food system across America. Each has witnessed the current industrial model's consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources and obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for our future. Among several onscreen figures, Fresh features urban farmer and activist Will Allen, sustainable farmer and entrepreneur Joel Salatin, The Omnivore's Dilemma author Michael Pollan and Kansas City supermarket owner David Ball, who stocks his stores with products from local suppliers. Seeking to prod us away from cynicism or resignation, Fresh is a call to action that all of us can support a new type of food system that is viable and healthy for all consumers.

This is wonderful to see. I think it is critically important to eat local, preferably something you have growing right outside your back door. I know it is not feasible for everyone. But progress towards as fresh and whole as can be.... that will make a real difference in our health and well being.

Fresh is best. Get to know the ones growing, producing your food, what is more intimate afterall than what you put into your body each and everyday!

It is a sacred thing, to me. Hence why breaking bread with people is truly a spiritual experience, it is an honour and gets to the very heart of what makes us tic.

Food of life. Love.

real and whole~

I suggest a number of research topics to my students. I'm proud to say that one became very interested in the current state of our "food systems" and the future of food and human and planetary health. Here's a piece of good news for those who are already supporting farmers markets or on the fence or trying to convince friends and families to go. And I love this quote and couldn't agree more: "...farmers’ markets prices were generally lower than or, at worst, equal to supermarket prices...Besides, the experience of shopping at a farmers’ market makes food buying into an adventure instead of just a chore."

Myth of High Prices at the Farmers Market

by Cathryn Wellner
May 3, 2012

I still hear people say they cannot afford to shop at a farmers’ market. They argue only the well heeled can afford to buy free-range eggs and heirloom tomatoes at those pricey venues. The only thing is, that idea does not stand up to scrutiny. A 2011 study for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont turned up surprising results. Prices were actually lower at the farmers’ markets, particularly for organic items.

Those findings were similar to what the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture discovered in a 2009 survey of Iowa products. And two years earlier, University of Washington students compared prices between a Seattle supermarket and a nearby farmers’ market. In all three cases — Vermont, Iowa, and Seattle — farmers’ markets prices were generally lower than or, at worst, equal to supermarket prices.

These are only the most widely publicized results. One of the common reasons for not buying from local farmers turns out to be based on a story that does not bear up under scrutiny. Do a test at a market nearby, and you will likely be surprised by the results. Besides, the experience of shopping at a farmers’ market makes food buying into an adventure instead of just a chore.

Join the Food Revolution

Farmers’ markets are a good place to join the Food Revolution. You can also check out the Food Revolution Map to see where things are happening in your community.

If shopping at a farmers’ market just doesn’t feel like a fit for you, don’t despair. In Seattle, you can contribute to a community e-cookbook. Or get involved with a community garden in Crete, Nebraska.

Boise, Idaho has jumped on board to bring the community together through fresh, local foods. A group of young chefs in Downington, Pennsylvania are determined to change their community’s knowledge and health concerning food.

If your city isn’t on the map, gather allies and become a Food Revolution Community with your own, unique focus. And if being part of a larger movement is not your thing, don’t despair. On Saturday, May 19th, you can still be part of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution by shopping at your local farmers’ market.

Default 2012 Goldman Environmental Prize for South and Central America: Sofia Gatica

After experiencing the traumatizing death of her daughter to kidney failure just three days after her daughter was born, Sofia Gatica from Argentina became determined to find out what killed her daughter. Her conclusion? Monsanto's genetically modified soy fields that surrounded her neighborhood, laced with damaging insecticides negatively affecting nearby neighborhood children and adults alike.

Gatica began to detail how her small town was plagued with astronomically high birth defect rates, respiratory disease, and even infant mortality. From this point, the courageous mother decided to take on Monsanto.

Amazingly, she is not alone in her struggle against the biotechnology colossus when it comes to causing birth problems, as a large group of farmers — also from Argentina — have launched a lawsuit against Monsanto for causing 'devastating birth defects' in children. Gatica was initially alone, however, when she first began her uphill battle.

Forming a group of concerned mothers in her local area of Ituzaingó after hosting an event at her home to discuss her experiences, the mother would be one of the very few who has actually beat Monsanto.

After sharing her story with local mothers who were also concerned for the safety of their children and families as a whole, Gatica co-founded the Mothers of Ituzaingó — an action group of 16 mothers collaborating to end Monsanto's rampant chemical usage. The team took to the streets, going door to door to create what was the first epidemiological study of the area, only to discover that the effects of Monsanto's concoctions were dramatically affecting many families in the town of Ituzaingó.

With cancer rates 41 times the national average, something had to be done.

As a result of the serious campaign to eradicate Monsanto, the mothers were rewarded. Argentina's Supreme Court not only banned chemical spraying near populated areas, but demanded that the government, as well as soy manufacturers, now prove that these chemicals are safe.

Sofia Gatica is now being honored for her great environmental work with the Goldman Environmental prize, a major environmental award given to activists. The story shows just how serious activism can take down most any threat — even Corrupt Monsanto

!Bien echo Sra Gatica!

Default Farmageddon

Farmageddon - The truth about the food and dairy industry

Americans' right to access fresh, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small, family farms that were providing safe, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop, sometimes through violent ac-tion, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies, and seeks to figure out why.

Filmmaker Kristin Canty's quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe, healthy food, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions.

Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals' rights to access food of their choice and farmers' rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasona-bly burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive.

Default Aspartame Sweet Misery, A Poisoned World - FULL LENGTH

Aspartame Sweet Misery, A Poisoned World

Documentary by: Sound and Fury Productions.
Source: Mercola.com

If a product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and composed of natural ingredients, would you assume it is safe to consume?

If the same product is an artificial sweetener, would you assume it helps control your weight?

Millions of people use aspartame, the artificial sweetener known as NutraSweet, with these assumptions in mind.

Aspartame can be found in thousands of products such as:

instant breakfasts
breath mints
cereals
sugar-free chewing gum
cocoa mixes
coffee beverages
frozen desserts
gelatin desserts
juice beverages
laxatives
multivitamins
milk drinks
pharmaceuticals and supplements, including over-the-counter medicines
shake mixes
soft drinks
tabletop sweeteners
tea beverages
instant teas and coffees
topping mixes
wine coolers
yogurt

However, aspartame's tainted history of approval and potentially toxic ingredients cast serious doubt on the safety of this sugar substitute. Furthermore, aspartame may actually increase your appetite (Farber 52).

While the FDA approval may signal the green light for safe consumption, 85 percent of all complaints registered with the FDA are for adverse reactions to aspartame, including five reported deaths. A closer look at the unscientific studies, suspicious approval methods, and its harmful ingredients, reveal the hidden dangers of this artificial sweetener. In reality, aspartame poses a public health threat.

Per request, I am reposting this here:

If you're teetering on the edge of becoming a vegan or vegetarian, this documentary is for you...This one was one of several that have tipped the scales for me...I will no longer be eating/using animal products...

Vegucated:

Part sociological experiment and part adventure comedy, Vegucated follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. Lured by tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover the hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. This entertaining documentary showcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who discover they can change the world one bite at a time.

I am not vegan and probably won't ever be completely but I do feel the world need more conscious changes. This video open yours eyes to the unnecessary production, consumption and abuse of animals.

I truly wish, with all of my animal loving/earth loving heart, that every dairy was operated like this one...This man loves and appreciates each and every one of his ladies. He is local to my area, and I am proud to have his products available to our community.

I was a little annoyed last night, when I found an entire section of the freezer, at the local whole foods market, dedicated to Kashi products. Gross. It is frustrating to me, to have to research every single food product, because their labeling is so misleading.

When I explain to people the reasons for my food choices, they are turned off by the fact that they can't just pick something up without doing so much leg work. I think most people just give up, because it is all so confusing. I really wish consumers were better protected with crystal clear labeling. Unfortunately, the deep pocketed food industry works very hard at pumping crap into our bodies with clever marketing.
