Default Facebook Shares Data With WhatsApp

Facebook Practically Forces WhatsApp Users to Share Data with Facebook

© Provided by BGR WhatsApp Privacy

* WhatsApp’s new privacy policy will force users to agree to share data with Facebook. There’s no opt-out available this time.

* Facebook tried to link WhatsApp and Facebook profiles before but gave users a way to opt out of the feature.

* Facebook promised not to connect WhatsApp and Facebook accounts when it purchased the chat app in 2014.

When Facebook announced plans to purchase WhatsApp several years ago, it promised not to link user data between the two services. It turned out to be a lie, as Facebook initiated a process to link accounts just two years later. Facebook was fined for it in Europe, but it didn’t really matter. At the time, users were able to opt out of the data sharing process. Fast forward to early 2021, a few weeks after Facebook launched a massive attack against Apple’s newest privacy features, and Facebook wants to collect even more user data. The company is practically forcing WhatsApp users to share data with WhatsApp. There’s no real alternative to opt out from the feature this time around. The only thing you can do is quit WhatsApp completely. And it’s all happening in the midst of a massive health crisis where apps like WhatsApp are critical for communication.

WhatsApp users may have noticed the following prompt in the app, informing them that WhatsApp is updating its terms and privacy policy. The privacy update will take effect on February 8th, and the only button you can press is Agree.

If you disagree, you can’t opt out, as Facebook explains. After February 8th, “you’ll need to accept these updated to continue using WhatsApp.”

Here’s the WhatsApp data shared with Facebook once you agree to the new terms, via xda-developers.

“The information we share with the other Facebook Companies includes your account registration information (such as your phone number), transaction data, service-related information, information on how you interact with others (including businesses) when using our Services, mobile device information, your IP address, and may include other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent.”

The WhatsApp privacy policy is available at this link. It explains, among other things, how WhatsApp works with other Facebook companies.

As part of the Facebook Companies, WhatsApp receives information from, and shares information (see here) with, the other Facebook Companies. We may use the information we receive from them, and they may use the information we share with them, to help operate, provide, improve, understand, customize, support, and market our Services and their offerings, including the Facebook Company Products. This includes:

* helping improve infrastructure and delivery systems;

* understanding how our Services or theirs are used;

* promoting safety, security and integrity across the Facebook Company Products, e.g., securing systems and fighting spam, threats, abuse, or infringement activities;

* improving their services and your experiences using them, such as making suggestions for you (for example, of friends or group connections, or of interesting content), personalizing features and content, helping you complete purchases and transactions, and showing relevant offers and ads across the Facebook Company Products; and

* providing integrations which enable you to connect your WhatsApp experiences with other Facebook Company Products. For example, allowing you to connect your Facebook Pay account to pay for things on WhatsApp or enabling you to chat with your friends on other Facebook Company Products, such as Portal, by connecting your WhatsApp account.

Unsurprisingly, personalization and ads came up in the list of reasons for data sharing. Facebook did pay nearly $20 billion for WhatsApp, and it needs to make money off it. It might not place annoying ads in WhatsApp, but connecting WhatsApp to Facebook and Instagram would allow it to gather even more data about users.

WhatsApp will continue to remain end-to-end encrypted, and the app doesn’t collect as much data as Facebook Messenger does.

If there is one good reason to offer users some way to link all their Facebook properties, that’s the mythical end-to-end encrypted chat app that will unify Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It’s unclear when that will happen, as Facebook has only linked Messenger and Instagram chats so far. Facebook’s decision to start linking WhatsApp with Facebook this early isn’t any less annoying.

The other way you could fight back is by deleting your Facebook profile. But Facebook collects data from non-Facebook account holders as well.

Uganda’s Leader Says Social Media Shut Down Ahead of Polls

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said Tuesday that his government has shut down social media ahead of a tense election on Thursday, accusing Facebook and unnamed outside groups of “arrogance” after the social network this week removed Ugandan accounts linked to his reelection campaign.

“That social channel you are talking about, if it is going to operate in Uganda, it should be used equitably by everybody who wants to use it,” Museveni said of Facebook in a national address. “If you want to take sides against the (ruling party), then that group will not operate in Uganda.”

Museveni, dressed in a military jacket, said he was “sure the government has closed social media” and apologized to Ugandans for what he called an inconvenience.

Facebook on Monday said it had removed a network of accounts and pages that “used fake and duplicate accounts to manage pages, comment on other people’s content, impersonate users, re-share posts in groups to make them appear more popular than they were.” The network was linked to a government ministry, it said.

There was no immediate Facebook statement in response to the president’s comments.

Many Ugandans said Tuesday that Facebook and WhatsApp were not working. Twitter also appears to have been affected.

There are fears the internet will be shut down on polling day.

“This is unfortunate but it is unavoidable. There is no way anybody can come around and play with our country, to decide who is good, who is bad. We cannot accept that,” Museveni said, adding that he “cannot tolerate this arrogance.”

Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, has alleged repeatedly that foreign groups are trying to meddle in Uganda’s election, without providing evidence. He has accused his main challenger, the popular singer and opposition lawmaker known as Bobi Wine, of being “an agent of foreign interests.” Wine denies this.

The atmosphere in Uganda is increasingly charged ahead of voting. Police and military personnel now patrol the streets in parts of the capital, Kampala, and the military is in charge of all security operations in the Kampala metropolitan area.

Wine, who insisted Tuesday that his campaign is nonviolent, urged his supporters not to be intimidated by the security forces.

Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, earlier on Tuesday joined other opposition figures in criticizing widespread violence by security forces. He told reporters that soldiers raided his home Tuesday morning, arrested a security guard and beat two gardeners badly.

“The terror, frankly, is unprecedented,” said Kizza Besigye, a veteran opposition leader who challenged Museveni in four elections. “Violence, terror seem to be scaled up with every coming election. This election has witnessed untold violence. It gets worse and worse by the day.”

The army spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. The police spokesman was unavailable.

At least 54 people were killed in Kampala and other parts of the country in November as security forces put down riots provoked by the arrest of Wine for allegedly violating campaign regulations aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

Those deaths form a critical part of Wine’s petition to the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged acts of torture, mutilation and murder of civilian protesters by security forces.

The leading opposition candidates said they had launched a concerted effort to protect against vote-rigging at polling stations. They are urging their supporters to stay within 100 meters of polling stations rather than return home as the electoral commission is demanding. That means potential confrontations with security forces.

Ugandan authorities have asserted an urgent need to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in imposing restrictions on presidential candidates, including a ban on campaigns in Kampala and other urban areas.

Many among Wine’s campaign team are now in detention. Wine has been arrested many times and sometimes beaten in the past year for alleged offenses such as disobeying lawful orders. He has not been convicted of any charges.

Uganda’s 76-year-old president has defied calls for his retirement, saying he has been elected many times by Ugandans who love him.

Ugandan polls are often marred by allegations of rigging. The country has never seen a peaceful transfer of power since independence from Britain in 1962.

As concerns rise, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Tuesday that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “urges the Ugandan authorities, particularly the security forces, to act in a manner that respects international human rights standards, and he also encourages all political actors and their supporters to publicly commit to conduct their political activities peacefully and refrain from incitement to violence or hate speech.”

Default Yahoo Finance Bill Gates: Permanent Facebook ban of Trump would be 'a shame'....

The oversight board at Facebook (FB) will decide in the coming weeks whether former President Donald Trump should regain access to the platform or face a permanent ban.

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates — whom Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg considers a mentor — on Wednesday weighed in on the impending decision, telling Yahoo Finance that a permanent ban of Trump "would be a shame" and would amount to an "extreme measure."

He warned that such a move would cause "polarization" if users with different political views divide up among various social networks.

"I don't think banning somebody who actually did get a fair number of votes — well less than a majority — but I don't think having him off forever would be that good," says Gates, referring to Trump, whose Facebook account has more than 35 million followers.

Facebook indefinitely suspended Trump's accounts on Facebook and Instagram on Jan. 7, the day after Trump supporters attacked the Capitol. Twitter (TWTR) permanently banned Trump on Jan. 8.

IF only 45's posts were used for expressing a different political view! IMHO, his crosses the line to almost the point of "yelling fire in a crowded theater"!

What does it matter how many votes he got? He uses public platforms to inflame his kool-aid drinkers. Do we want a repeat at the Capitol? Bill Gates should know better.
