El pueblo cubano pasó por varias etapas en su lucha por alcanzar su libertad e independencia desde comienzos del siglo XIX, donde la afirmación de la nacionalidad cubana, el incremento del comercio y de la economía criolla exigía la mayoría de edad, agudizó la crisis con la guerra ideológica fomentada por el Profeta de la Dignidad Nacional Pbro. Félix Varela el mismo que fuera maestro de José Martí, persona que en 1853 tras la muerte de Varela surge como el cambio de relevos por la conducción de la lucha independentista de los cubanos.

Se siguió el camino de la lucha armada tras la negativa de la Corona Española a conceder la independencia a su última colonia en el continente americano.
Vino la Guerra de los Diez Años en 1868 donde grandes patriotas señalaron el camino del sacrificio para la liberación e independencia.
Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Ignacio Agramonte, Vicente Aguilera, Calizto García, Antonio Maceo, Máximo Gómez, Tomás Estrada Palma, Manuel Sanguily, y otros...
Durante la guerra, Cuba sostuvo siempre un gobierno civil de la República.
Siguió la Guerra Chiquita en 1881, y la Guerra de Independencia que comenzó en 1895 y continuó hasta 1898, año en que, tras la cruenta lucha de los Mambieses contra el ejército español, la intervención de los norteamericanos contra España tras el hundimiento del acorazado Maine, la destrucción de la flota española en Santiago de cuba y la toma del Caney; condujeron a la derrota de los españoles.

Tras la rendición de la Corona Española, Cuba tuvo interevención norteamericana desde 1898 a 1902, año en el que, por fin, el 20 de mayo se izó la bandera cubana en el castilllo de Morro de La Habana.
Cuba nació con una enmienda en su constitución , la llamada Enmienda Platt, en la que se daban los derechos a Estados Unidos de intervenir en Cuba, de tener tres bases navales en el país y de la posesión de Isla de Pinos, que hasta 1922 no fue devuelta tras reclamaciones del Congreso cubano.
