For anyone to post in about butch clothing, and styles. I always like to see what we all put on!

And no, this is not a butch cock & packing thread :superfunny:..... there is one of those already!

So, what are we all wearing these days? Casually, to formals.... to work?

For me .... I am most comfortable in Wranglers or Cinch jeans and shirts. Boots are a must, and Cowboi hats!

I'm a jeans and shirt person. I'll wear steel toe boots or sneakers. When the weather gets warmer, I like cargo shorts or jean shorts. I'll dress for any occasion when I have to.

Yup! I like Wranglers! And, I really want some western boots! Great for CW dancing and just like them.

LOL... I just got a Point Isabel/Mud Puppies T and it goes with my red tennies!

I have been doing a lot of putting vintage style stuff together from the Gentlemen's Emporium with formal wear. Got a kewl puff tie that really accents a lapel vest.

Looking for a belt to put an old buckle a friend gave me on. It is an Italian Family Mother's & Fathers buckle. She found it for me in a thrift shop and I was so jazzed to have it!! Hey, the more western attired butches could tell me where to go find a nice leather belt for it. Where I live, western attire stores are just not around, much!

Also, I like shpping vintage stores, but really have a problem with them if everything smells! Only have found one in SF that I will even try things on in.

I'm Parker. I'm a non-active member here, but I couldn't resist this thread. I'm a clothes horse and I have my own look which is very masculine, but not typical. You'll usually find me going against the grain in haircuts and clothes; I don't like the way clothing is put together today for myself. One of the things I would like to do is design a masculine clothing line. I am transgendered with transition this year so my clothes are made for men.

I like to call my style of dress more faggy than manly, if that makes sense without being offensive. Though it is mostly jeans, pull over shirts, and jackets - love me my jackets (I have more jackets than pants).

BUT!

There is a big fancy butch/femme dance coming up here in the bay area and I would love to find something to wear. Due to my (ugh!) hour glass figure I have to either wear pants that are three sizes too big or (gasp, cough, sputter) pleated! What is a boyish girl to do? I love to dance - a lot - so I need something comfortable and not tight (can not stand the feeling of tightness on my already too big (for me, again ugh!) thighs.

:overreaction:

Don't get me wrong, I love hour glass figures on others.....you all understand right?

Any tips for me?

Look at Cavenders, or Sheplers online. You should be able to find a belt to your liking there.

I have a masculine body (no breasts, small hips). My problem is that I'm short and have to have pants taken up expect for Turnbury which makes a short inseam. I don't like fads. That said...

Ez has great style and gives good pompadour--plus he smells good!

tips from a femme:

:unicorn: save money by spending a little more on a few items, this is a universal truth and don't buy every t-shirt known to man--you can't really wear them anywhere except for weekend errands, anyway.

:unicorn: and TRY ON, but there's some of you that will never (like Ez) so keep all the tags on so that you (or your amazing girlfriend) can have an easy time returning everything that doesn't work.

:unicorn: Ask for help! and shop the sales in finer stores--yes, those salespeople work on commission because the provide GREAT SERVICE and will call you when something has a. come in that you've been looking for or b. is going on sale that you've had your eye on! (use them! really, they're there for you and will make you look good!)

(off topic: EZ has a great eye for classic style (think: mad men), and though he'll rarely mention it, it's all part of the attraction--it's sexy when someone has confidence and doesn't need an extensive portfolio in some misguided attempt at impressing the ladies. in other words, i know he's dressing for *himself* and that is just what i like, no matter what he's wearing.)

I think every pair of slacks I own are pleated. I have the body shape and size to wear them.........AND.....they are fitted properly and the length is correct.........besides they are way more comfortable...

Jack........you will be glad to know I am buying a real bow tie this year for the Winter Ball...........you shamed me at the Oakland Bash............laughin..........so.........it's a real bow tie.....now I just have to figure out how to tie it........and should I get the one with the pointy ends or just the straight line.......

I am very classic. I like khaki's, button-downs, rugby shirts, and sportshirts. I wear sweaters. I have the basics in terms of suits, ties, and belts. I try to match the belts to the shoes. In the summer, I love to wear swim trunks over shorts any day. I find them more comfi.

For dress or semi-dress clothes I can buy off the rack at Calvin Klein. I used to buy my dress shirts from Express because they were the perfect arm length, but I pretty much buy everything from Calvin now (and not sure what Express is even selling anymore), or Kenneth Cole.

The thing I notice that butches screw up the most is not making sure that shirts/sweaters, etc., fit their shoulders correctly. Half the time you see guys with the shoulder seam half way down their arm.

For jeans, cargo shorts and other really casual stuff, I just buy wherever I find something I like. That could be at Abercrombie, Hollister, Gap, etc.

I think the most important thing is to find things that fit your body type well. That is what you will look the best in.

Most of the western stuff for me is about dance. But want a belt for that buckle!

Hey Toughy, I'm with you on pleated slacks. Also, can't decide on the puff tie, an ascot or a honest to goodness real bow tie for the Winter Ball!!! LOL... I bet Jack gave you hell!

Thanks to all of you for posting- getting some ideas. Yes, Dapper.... the shirt thang! Getting the sleeves right is so important!!! Makes me gringe too when I see another butch in a really nice shirt and the shoulders do not fit. LOL... now, garters when you want to period dress are kewl. Then there are the common mistakes we make with jackets. it has really been good for me to try on all styles... 1, 2, 3, 4 button, single or double breasted. Side pleats, rear pleats, etc. to find what really does look best on my body.

If we just take the time to ask, and get alterations with a tailor from a store (just talking formal wear here, or good suits) that is right there doing the measurements, it is a good investment in the long run. Plus, I have found it much less expensive to have the alterations done in-store than taking garmets to an outside tailor. hell, the tailcoat and trousers I bout for the first BASH Ball I went to, I ordered and it cost me $150 for the alterations. It is a fine brand and I thougt... oh, this is much less through their online store, and Ill just get it altered here... and ARGH!I know sometimes it's hard, especially if you live in areas that are more rural, but I always think about the cost factor for nice clothing, that which I know I will wear often. I want it to fit well.

To be honest, I really like to shop with a femme consultant! Have really come away with clothes that fit well that way. And ones I know I can just change a hirt or vest with and wear to many events.

4 button suits is a no no if you like classic style :jack:

Just saying :cheesy:

 Gotcha!!!

2 button tends to be me, single, rear vent. and yes, 4 button isn't classic at all. Don't look good on me anyway, but have seen some butches look fantastic in them!

The hardest thing for me with tuxes/suits are my damn shoulders and having to have what seems like yards taken in at the waist so that I don't look like a box! Also, the jacket length... always have to get them shortened unless I can find them in a short that fits my shoulders. Weird, I'm not short, kinda averge, I think.

Hummmm... it sure would be great for me to meet a seamstress!!! Gonna put that on my list!

Darth Denkay

I've always thought of myself as a conservative dresser, but I like the term "classic" so I'm going with that.

Shirts: button-ups, polo-type, rugby, t-shirts when casual

Pants: levi 501s, cargo pants or shorts, slacks when I need to be a bit less casual

Shoes: 95% of the time either my brown slip-on have no idea what you call them shoes, or my hiking boots.

Right now where I work cargo pants and jeans are fine. At the moment I don't have much in the dress-up department - my weight has been shifting enough lately that what used to fit doesn't anymore. I do need to pick up a couple pairs of dress slacks and dress shirts but I guess I'm waiting until I need them and then can size them for me right at the moment.

I can buy most of my clothes off the rack. Suits are the one thing that I can't. With my weight fluctuation I wouldn't get one now anyway, but even after I stabilize I'll wait until I can afford a good tailor.

Their customer service is off the hook, they sent the wrong bow-tie and in a panic I told them that I didn't have enough turn around time before my social event.
I was informed they would overnight the correct one to me and just put the other one in the snail mail. It was my first order with this company, and I was impressed.

This is great!!! Customer service is so important!

AtLast, I haven't tried these yet but if you love braces and Levis, well with Levis I guess it would be suspenders, then this is the perfect marriage.

or

or (something my co-worker wore that I MUST have)

If I'm not wearing that I tend toward Dockers and polo shirts. When I'm going to 'step out' I like to wear a Brooks Brothers suit with a tie. :)

I always wear either a suit or a suit coat and pants with a cotton dress shirt or a more casual cotton button down shirt. Neckties often.
I like pleated pants, too, especially in a suit. Flat front is fine, too. I have some overcoats I really like, mostly gray or black, and one camel hair.

I buy a lot of stuff second hand. In this economy, nice items have become harder to get.

I don't own anything that was manufactured for women just because everything I prefer was manufactured for men.

Hell yeah...and when they get that look in their eye, you know that crap is going bye-bye. (I had a partner who warned me about some shorts that were holey in strategic places. She hated it. Came home one day and she had totally cut them open. All. The. Way. It was sad to say goodbye to such a comfy friend.

I never do it, but honestly, the ticket is this: As soon as you find stuff you like that fits you, go out and buy more of it. Invariably, I wait and end up like you Jess, looking for a replacement. When will I learn?

I also have a tux tie that looks like a V that is a western dress. You don't find them too much. My Jackets also have to be taken up in the sleeves because I have short arms(33 1/2). My problems in getting my shirts to fit is the neck is too big.

As a femme, i would like to tell butches that if the clothes don't fit, they don't look good. Sometimes it's as easy as shopping in the women's section for a similar garment. Sometimes, tailoring is needed. i don't care how nice the clothes are, if they don't fit, . . .

This from a femme who alternates between three skirts and about six or seven tops. So, for what it's worth.

i think the dirty little secret of butch fashion IS that a lot of things from the women's section DO fit better. My ex -- who used "he," etc. -- bought, among other things, Gloria Vanderbilt cargo pants. The way his ass looked in those pants. . . . He also wore tailored shirts with darts. i think because he was proud of his abs and didn't want his shirt bagging down the waist. Damn, he was hot. *fans self remembering*

I have to say I appreciate this post! I mix/match both men's & women's clothes all the time. Have some classically styled jackets from dear Gloria (love it that she is Anderson Cooper's mother) that simply fit me well... and I have had both of them altered, too. Even when I wore women's clothes exclusively, a good tailor/seamstress (as my Grandmother was - hand made my Grandfather's business suits) was always needed. Who has a body that anything off the rack fits? Well, except 501's... maybe.

If someone wants to checkout which side my buttons are on, or a label... fine. And.... if it matters to someone, a skilled seamstress/tailor can reverse button holes without a trace of evidence (no, I don't have this done, but know a butch that does)! It is the fit that matters to me. Also, fabric and how it feels against my skin.

All my life, boys/mens pants have just fit me better, but not when it comes to some of the finer women's designers.

I have a silk black & white stripped shirt that is a woman's that I have had more compliments about than any of my all-menswear outfits/shirts. It looks fantastic with a black tie. It is a favorite piece in my wardrobe.

Now, I also really like Brooks Brother suits..... and do wear that shirt with one!

Actually, I think all butches should just wear what they want... and have fun dressing!

Solid advice to buy clothes that fit properly?

I buy clothes that fit properly. I don't give a shit which department the clothes come from. I do have some women's shirts that fit me better than men's shirts. NO shame in that.

I rarely buy from the women's department, but that does not mean I must buy only from the men's department or risk having my butch card revoked.

Buy clothes that fit properly and if needed, have them altered.

Why is it such a big fucking deal to buy a shirt (or slacks or jackets) with the buttons sewn on the right side rather than the left side?

Cheap women's clothes are very poorly made of lousy fabrics(besides they are usually just plain weird looking) but cheap men's clothing is much better quality and still cheap.

My femme room mate talked me into looking in the (gasp) woman's department for pants and what do you know? I found a pair of pants I like (decent sturdy material) that fit me well. And no pleats and no touching my curvey thighs. I was kind of excited about the materials and patterns I saw there.

But another thing about woman's pants that I can't stand is the pockets are so freaking small. What, "lady's" are not allowed to put their hands in their pockets??? And forget about putting a wallet in the back ones. And only one back pocket....really? Or they are sewn shut...go to all the trouble of making a pocket and then sew it shut? Is this what they charge extra for?

As for altering, I'm not expected to alter EVERYTHING right? My casual clothes get pretty torn and stained anyway because of the type of work I do, and my free time mostly is spent doing dog things. Maybe a couple of nice things for those rare dressy occasions?

I'm so stoked right now. Out shopping with Ingress at weekend I wanted to find a new shirt for that nights 'date' so we made our way to boys section in the biggest (read only) department store in town. Being one of those short, 7st weakling types the boys dept. can occasionally throw up a gem or two, as it was to on this day.

Whilst trying on different sizes of a rather smart formal shirt I'd found - after having the sales assistant unlock the 'childrens' changing room for me - Ingress brought two rather funky, less formal shirts she'd found on the sale-rail for me to try on...they were a perfect, it was to be an open-necked night rather than a tie...job done! Then, whilst browsing on the way to the checkout another look at the sale-rail offered up a rather smart Duffer of St.George slim fit, black, fine herringbone, single button, double vent suit (age 15 :D).

The upshot is, 1 perfectly fitting suit and 2 funky shirts for less than £50 (uk) ...don't ya love a bargain!

We both looked lovely for our date that night ;)

Seamstressly speaking "backing" is the material on the reverse or backside of a garment used to give structure to the garment... it can be a non-woven material such as Pellon, a light cotton, silk or artificial fiber such as nylon or polyester (aka microfibre). It has nothing to do with whether or not a garment has a back.

Usually vests for wear with a tuxedo, dinner jacket or morning suit do not have a back; this is to provide less weight to the overall design and enhance wearability without adding layers that may increase warmth and lead to sweating... peri and post menopausal Butches take note...

Pique is actually the name of a weave of cloth... can be done in just about any material but works best with cottons, cotton blends and light or tropical weight wools... best example of pique is in a LaCoste golf shirt ( the ones with the lil alligator crest) or knock offs of those... but for its use in formal wear, take a "pique" at this !

Yeah... just get things for dressy stuff altered. My casual clothes are just that... casual.

There are women's clothes made that have deep pockets and I put a wallet in my back pocket in them all the time. But, no, not cheap. Although, if I have the time (and patience), I will go to the discount places and rummage. I have found top brands (men's & women's) for a fraction of the cost many times. Again, what fits YOU the best and you like is what matters.

I have my dog doing stuff attire, too! Rat pack! And painting fixing stuff, camping & fishing clothes.

Cheap women's clothes are very poorly made of lousy fabrics(besides they are usually just plain weird looking) but cheap men's clothing is much better quality and still cheap.

Gotta disagree here. I have seen weird/cheap in both and the opposite.

Jackhammer & Thinker have posted some good online links for great ties, vests and jeans for those of us that like to wear suspenders. Both are in mens wear. I want some of those sloops!

There are women clothing designers that have some great uni-sex styles that as a larger woman, fit me well. It looks like for a lot of smaller butches there is a whole other set of problems.

WOW, I am getting a lot of tips here! Hummm... one thing I can't wear via the women's department are shoes & boots. Never could. Got some way wide, big feet! Also, women's styles for the most part just don't speak to me for myself.

Thinking, cheap anything sux in clothing. I try to buy stuff that will last as well as fit. Even cheap men's T's are not for me. I have a hard time with anything that is tight or made from a fabric that isn't comfy for me. My breast/chest/shoulders have always been a problem even with many men's brands. I sure shop discount and thrift/vintage places, but I'd rather pay a little more and be able to wear something for awhile.

Also, in formal wear, buying a good brand is an investment. Just change shirts, ties, vests, etc. and a good tux can be worn for years (classic design).

I have a terrible time finding a hair stylist that can do a gentlemen's cut with a razor!!! They always want to use scissors and look at me like I am crazy in asking for a razor cut. Makes me nuts! My hair just seems to look better when cut with a razor and I moved away from a stylist that used to cut it how I like it (cut with a damn razor- the straight edged kind!). Thinking I should just go to a barber.... Also, any favorite hair products?

Every four weeks when I go to my stylist (whom I've known for years), she asks if I want the same thing. (She knows my mom hates my short hair. LOL)
She does pretty good with scissors and clippers, but that's me. Also, my hair is just a wee bit longish on top. (I wear it faux-hawked).
Which leads me into product. I probably need more than most for the faux-hawk, but I've found the Axe stuff works well, as does Redken (sponge, I think, which is weird feeling.) The Redken stuff I've used to style my hair when I'm not faux-hawking, so it was a nice find.

Just want to chime in on hair product.

For a long time, I resisted my stylist insisting I try hair wax. I thought it would be "too heavy" on the hair. My hair is my one vanity thing, you see.

Finally, I tried two different waxes. Sumo by Bumble & Bumble, which is a creamy wax and Short Sexy Hair (can't remember who makes it...comes in small white container with a yellow lid). Short Sexy Hair has great hold, and doesn't feel that heavy to me. I ignore the instructions and put it in my hair when it is still a bit damp, not when it's completely dry. I think that helps it feel less heavy, in fact. If I have to go a bit longer between cuts, my hair gets longish on the top, and wax doesn't do much for the style. I then switch to Styling Creme by Bumble & Bumble.

I wear my hair very short, cut every 4 weeks. I have 3 cowlicks, which makes for maddening times when it comes time to style it. My hair never looks the same two days in a row as a result.

About hair products:

My hair is more salt than pepper, and I use products relevant to that.
Shampoo is Matrix Essentials So Silver.
while hair is damp I put in glisten mop shine drops.
A little Kenra #17 spray goes a long way.
I get them from the person who cuts my hair (every 4 weeks also.)

Having said all that, I have gotten away from using those most of the time because I don't like the idea of being constantly saturated with chemicals. Most of the time I now use organic shampoo and Banyan Ashwaganda-Bala organic herbal oil which I get from the herbal store associated with my herbalist. This is the same oil I use on hands, face, body, etc.

I have the same problem with my hair (3 cowlicks) and it is super straight, can't do a thing with it. I used to go to my barber every 4 to 6 weeks - great cut. But I've since moved and hardly ever get his way. Last haircut I got was in December - man, do I ever look scruffy! This time I still want a short cut but thinking maybe trying a fauxhawk.

Roy G Biv - I'm trying to get away from all the chemicals too. Think I'll give some of your products a try.

I wish to hell I would get more gray/silver/white (whatever) hair! My hair is very fine (but curly) and I would love to be able to get a cut more like some of the butches that have more coarse hair! My hair just would not look like theirs. Hell, my Mom, at 81 was not totally gray, nor was my Dad in his 70's. lately, I have just stopped using sculpting/sticky stuff at all. The chemicals and the smells often bother me. Like hats, anyway... :huhlaugh: and just don't like my hair texture!

I wear a hat and don't worry about it....chuckling.....

I do wear a hat most of the time, but it is because I am anal about my hair when I don't have a hat on. Until my pay cut at work last year, I got my hair cut every 2 weeks. Can't afford that now, but he gives me a way short cut and in 4 weeks it is long enough to start to stick out and curl up so it's time for a fresh cut.

My thing is 2 cowlicks in the crown and my forehead is so low, if he cuts the front to short it looks like a cow catch on a train. LOL I know that is the style now a days but it isn't my style, thanks. I use mouse or jel to hold it into place, jel makes it to stiff but I use it sometimes.

I actually went and looked at my products.
It's Redken sponge matte 05 and Axe Pomade (the purplish label).
I like the Redken because it really does fell pretty light. The Axe is a bit heavier but has really good hold. I use it to spike up the front of my hair when it's like now ...a few days from needing a cut.
I would go every 3 weeks for a cut if I could afford it, but as it is, I go every four weeks. I have cowlicks on each side of my forehead and one in the back, as well. Mine is cut super short on the sides and back and just a wee bit longish on top so I can faux hawk it.
I've also used something called Fiber by Crew. It took talent to use but it worked really well.

ETA: If I didn't faux hawk my hair, I'd probably use just a smidgen of product. As it is, I don't use much. I also put it in wet. I'm always running late, so I never have time to wait for it to dry. And it doesn't feel like my hair is overdone. You can still run a hand thru it.
I like my hats but I can't get away with them at work.

Hey, guys. In terms of product, it really depends on your hair type and the type of cut you have. This is not a one size fits all kind of thing. I have found that my stylist can usually point me in the right direction.

I personally love the Redken for Men products. Right now I go back and forth between using their fiber gum ("disrupt") and their molding paste ("work hard"). I love the scent of all their men's hair products. I also use one of their shampoos.

I have quite a number of cowlicks, but my stylist is able to "cut those out" (as she calls it), so that even when my hair is growing out it grows out in such a way that they don't show up.

Thanks to both of you! Yes, the stylist is way important! But, I too, have made cuts in the hair-cut/products budget! I used to use a lot of Redkin and haven't in a long time. have to check them out again. I know I don't like my hair sticky/gooey. And I don't want to smell my hair product all day because it is strong. (But lots of this kind of stuff just makes me sneeze). LOL... as I said, I wish my hair was more corse but now that I think about it, I have had more than one woman want to touch my hair..... even when not dating them! Say it is soft. Guess so...

I wish I wasn't so sensitive to scents (on me and others). I hate it when I am out with a date wearing a scent that gets me sneezing. And having to explain that when we go out again, it woud be great if she didn't wear whatever she has on! I like it when I see Scent Free on an ad about an event!

This makes me think of what it was like here, too. But, I do usually get dappered-up when going out. I like to partner dance and the butches that go to these dances here do still dress-up in ties, etc. Of course, it seems like the age range is older at these overall. A lot of OFOS types. For the CW ones, its bolos and boots! I love the formal dances and have to say I wear my tux or tails tux quite a few times a year.

So in honor of spring, I bought about 4-5 nice pastel-colored shirts. (Well, my mom bought them for me as a gift.) I've liked shaking things up a bit from my usual navy/brown/dark green/etc colors. Ladies shirts, but those that look unisex or masculine. Mens jumpers and polos will fit me, but not proper mens dress shirts... yet ;)

Casual: Slogan/band/anime tee with cords, black trousers or jeans. Nothing feminine for me, just unisex or male stuff.

Formal: Suit, shirt, waistcoat, tie. Again, nothing femme. I buy mens ties from places like Primark where they're good quality but cheap. There's a childrens formalwear shop at the shopping centre where I buy my formal neckwear.

I'm looking to butch up my image in the coming weeks so I can gradually come out to the people I know and love :)

I wish I wasn't so sensitive to scents (on me and others). I hate it when I am out with a date wearing a scent that gets me sneezing. And having to explain that when we go out again, it woud be great if she didn't wear whatever she has on! I like it when I see Scent Free on an ad about an event!

I have some scent sensitivities as well, and casually mention it before dating so that I don't have an asthma attack. Embarrassing, that. I found a wonderful men's cologne for myself that does not bother me and has that wood/forest smell as well as some other scent that just smells fresh and great ... on me. It is Kenneth Cole's Signature.

I find that double pleated slacks work well for hips ... they seem to hang/drape better. I prefer pants with a full rise, though. They seem to look better on me and are more comfortable on my body.

For me its Jeans and a shirt. I mostly prefer band shirts or just a cool design. I like button downs and A shirts too. For shoes I prefer skate shoes or boots depending upon what I am doing.

If I need to dress up its usually slacks + button down & tie. Other times its just jeans and a polo since here in the Northwest most people are casual when they are dressy.

"save money by spending a little more on a few items, this is a universal truth and don't buy every t-shirt known to man--you can't really wear them anywhere except for weekend errands, anyway."

I'm most fortunate that I can wear T shirts to work every day. I've lived casual so long that I have few things other than T-shirts, sweatshirts and jeans. The nicer pieces that I do have my sweetie picked out.

Don't you love it when they do that! Actually, I like shopping for clothes, but, have to say I have learned a lot from having a femme along for formal wear and just non-casual stuff. I can always use fabric advice! How it will hang, wear, etc. and what stripes do and don't do for me. Colors, too. I have a great sense of color in home decor, but NOT with clothes! The fabric weight and fitting my bozo body best. And brands in terms of my bozo body! I don't like really low waisted pants.... yet not high either. And now I know a lot more about which brands get the butt right and accent my waist in terms of my wide shoulders without having a weird side-view with jackets. But fabric has a lot to do with this. Yup, femmes can be very helpful with this stuff! They RAWK!!!

Thinking that I still love the look and feel of 501's after all these years! My favorite casual, kicking around pants! But, I'm ordering some of those jeans to wear with suspenders that Jack posted the link too. Way Kewl! I finally bought some new western boots, mainly for CW & swing dancing. I forgot how good a well-made boot can feel! Haven't worn western boots since I was a teenager and had a horse! But, I tried on many styles, heel height and slant and brands- took me a few months to finally settle on a pair. Breaking them in! So far, so good!

I usually go all out, white shirt, cuff links, tie, vest, and a nice pair of pants, that is if I'm not in a suit. I know that some people find me flamboyant but I don't care...And also I like the attention I get from women, who always likes a butch well dressed, then there's different styles of course, but this is how I dress...

Yup.... women do appreciate a well dressed butch! Hey, I appreciate a well dressed woman! And it makes me feel good when on a date that she took care in dressing. So, I figure, I should let her know I thought about looking nice for her, too. Frankly, I think it is insulting to a date if either person shows up looking like a slob.

Sure, for stuff like picnics or street fairs, casual is perfect, but not sloppy...

Great fabric, Italian and other Euro styling. And, I can find a "normal" or high rise pant here. I do not care for the "waist" at my hips ... I'm too tall for that and high waisted, so it just isn't comfortable for me in those low rise pants. They also make me walk funny

Daily, I tend towards jeans, lower rise Gap or Levi's, a mid to thicker belt, sometimes grommets (buckle matters, not tiny or delicate), tees or graphic tees, long sleeve or short. Boot's mostly, ankle boots, hikers, but sometimes my fav pair of suede black vans (like 10 years old lol).

I hate the "new" graphics- swirly, sculls and guitars trend, I way not big on trends, I won't wear a graphic that I wouldn't have believed in or said myself... in other words I wouldn't wear a Bob Marley T shirt unless I loved Bob Marley's music. If it says something it has to mean something to me, like Triumph motorcycles, my MN Vikings jersey or something I enjoy real-life. No souvenir shirts.

I like leather jackets, motorcycle styles but not really the classic 50's "biker jacket" (though I've owned more than one in my early life) but more hybrids.... I love a half classic half euro style. Some more dress.

I like my watches in a black leather cuff style, no tiny faces... I always wear a big ass ring with a spectrolite gemstone that has some significant meaning to me. Um, body jewelery, a labret piercing and sm. (6g) ear grommet.

I don't wear button-ups a lot, sometimes going out on the town or to a party but for the most part I'm not crazy about them- most of mine are black or have some additional "something" to add. Not crazy about polo's either... and no flannel what-so ever.... don't do loafers, Khaki's, shorts, sweat shirts and I hate frumpy or conservative (for myself).

Really my daily styles been built around my activities and enjoyment, though a definite preference it's been as functional as anything else.

I rarely wear suits unless absolutely called for, then pure black with a white shirt, light quality material, modern with a thinner black ties. I have my tux to wear where necessary.

I do hats, not ball caps (except maybe fishing) but fedoras and I don't wear then with suits but w/ jeans most likely (though I do have an gray engineer cap I'm pretty fond of).

I like good materials, and it's important that my clothes to fit properly, don't wear really loose or over-sized anything (or too tight).

All in all though it may not look like it I'm extremely picky, my gf sometimes hates to shop with me because of it... lol.

Wow I can ramble on about clothes...

*clothes whore and I don't care *S*

I don't wear really short hair hair anymore but since I donned a traditional butch cut for longer than some peeps here have been on this earth...

Pomade, hair wax, hair balms.

If some people are less excited about using shelf products and smearing petroleum and chemical agents on their head daily there's excellent DIY recipes online that are made from Beeswax, oils such as sesame or safflower and Shea Butter.

Most run like 1 part Beeswax, 2 parts oil, 2 parts Shea Butter

Melt it all together on a very low heat in a small pan and pour into container. It will solidify in about half an hour to an hour depending on how much you made.

You can add a couple drops of a fragrance oil to the mix if you like as well.

I have a great head of hair..........thick and when it gets longer the waves come, esp in the back.

I use cheap ass shampoo......usually the dollar a bottle at Walgreens. I rarely use product......only if it's getting really long and I need to put on a tie for something and can't get to the barber. If I use product it's whatever cheap stuff that was at Walgreens (insert other pharmacy et al store as needed). It needs to have a strong hold....after all I am wearing it to hold my hair in place.

All of the people who have cut my hair over the years have ALL said I should not use all that stuff in my hair............I don't need it.....and I agree. They have ALL been shocked...yes shocked....that I use dollar shampoo on a daily basis..........

I am blessed by genetics to have great hair on my head.

In the market for a new tux. I do wear them fairly often, I have found and think investing in a more well-made one is a good idea. I like to go to all the formals during the Holidays and I plan on going to the next ReUnion.

I can't go nuts on price, but think I can find a good deal on some of the better brands and fabric. Anyone have suggestions about this? I might go double-breasted, but have to see when trying them on. I want a more light weight tux. Thinking classic cuts are best as I will wear it with different ties, vests, etc and hope to get good wear out of it.

I do want to buy it where it can be fitted and altered right there. There is always the men's Warehouse, I guess. But, maybe some of you have other suggestions?

When I read stuff like this it kinda makes me drool. ;) I just love tuxedos!

I suggest (since you're investing for the long-term) a simple style that is timeless.

-100% wool
-one- or two-button
-notch lapel (but I think you, ALH, would really dig a shawl lapel)

Personally, I'd steer clear of a double-breasted.

I get my suits from Jos A Bank Men Clothiers ... anything else ---> it is men's area in Banana Republic.

BR has some great new style khakis in a variety of colors right now. If anyone is interested, they are Gavin and Dawson style and sit a little lower on the waist (actually they are down on your hips) than that of previous Gavin's and Dawson's. Very reasonably priced too. Side Note: With the horrible heat we had this past summer, I was an ice cream eating fool but the yardwork kept it so the ice cream was not affecting me. Well, I have not done any yardwork in a month and kept up the same intake on the ice cream. Just this week I had to go buy size 32 in the men's Dawson style because the size 31 became uncomfortable to button the top button. I had 3 buckets of ice cream in my buggy at the grocery store this past weekend. I was so proud of myself because I put every one of them back in the freezer just before I went to the check out line. Made me kind of sad. The dogs are disappointed too. We'll make it ... somehow ... I think. Just have to tighten up, suck it up and go on. LOL!

Hummm... I have wondered about double breasted in terms of really wanting to get the wear out of it. The simple/timeless is what I do need. I have seen some shawl lapels that I like, but, dunno... maybe stay more traditional.

Probably go over to the Castro so I will feel comfy trying them on and being fitted. Although I am getting tired of the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area, for this it is good to be close to SF.

I do! I learned to never buy from a seller with less than 99% positive feedback and? it matters to me that items of clothing come from a 'smoke free' environment, so that also matters in the description of clothing items.

Here to join the casual brigade :P I prefer to stick to jeans/cargos and t-shirts/longsleeves/sweatshirts. When dressing up I'm kind of like cody in that I tend to go for the "good jeans." Will wear dress shirts/button downs, polos etc., and dress pants if needed, but really not into the whole suit thing. Luckily I work at a job where the dress code = sports wear.

But...have my first work Christmas party soon and while we don't have to get dressed up to the nines, I'm guessing the usual work clothes won't cut it lol So will have to figure out what to wear for that...ugh

I found some middle and heavy weight woolen trousers, but they are very pricey. I like plated, sit at the waist pants.
On eBay, I'm looking at Harris and other tweed jackets. After the first mistake of ordering my size, and finding that vintage runs smaller, I've measured all my parts, and checked with sellers about the measurements of their coats. It's a journey, I'll tell ya. Lol.

On the plus side, I purchased enough ties to open a shop!Hey did you win the bid on the coat?

I've gotten into sweater vests this year, have a number of them now. I really like the way they look with long sleeve shirts. I can wear a tie or not depending on the event, and with or without a jacket. They're really very versatile.

I'm not too sure about which of two threads about butch clothes to post ... but there are two things on my mind today. Again, re eBay.

While perusing men's jackets, I noticed that there were a lot of tux jackets listed. Some were the ? made stuff, some rentals, etc. There's something for nearly anyone, should you be in the market. Great prices on known quality makers, and good wools, too. Real bargains to be had, just in time for the holidays. Or, next years reunion.

Maybe I'm the only one who did not know this, but there is a lot of things to do before purchasing on line.

To purchase a jacket or coat, one takes a coat of similar material, lays it on a flat surface, and measures the "chest", from armpit to armpit - double this for the correct size; then, measure the sleeve, either from the shoulder seam to end of cuff, or from the midpoint at the back of the neck to the cuff; then, from shoulder seam to shoulder seam. Turn jacket over, and measure from the base of collar to the hem for the length.

Now, the above are the most common measurements given on eBay. There are occasional variations. However, these measurements are typical for a generalized masculine figure. So, you may need to ask about the waist measurement. Or, if appropriate for your shape, the approximate abdominal measurement. It's a lot of work, I know, but worth it if you purchase online. I'm learning things about my body that I normally ignore :lol2:

Just some musings here and hope to share this info with anyone who has not tried this way of shopping, and currently considers doing so.

Nice! I've got a Bill Blass Frock Tux jacket that I wish still fit or wasn't too expensive to have tailored because I LOVE frock tux jackets. Im about to e-bay and then try to find one similar to the pic you posted that fits

I prefer jeans, t-shirt (usually a Harley t-shirt) and either tennis shoes or my Harley boots; during the winter I add my leather riding Harley jacket. During the summer I prefer jean shorts, t-shirts and tennis shoes. When times arise that I have to dress us, I choose my best pair of dark jeans and boots.

I have to admit it is fun to come in here and listen to you all talk clothes. Makes me smile. I just wanted to add a word of support that us femmes do really appreciate your well dressed efforts. Well dressed and smelling good says your date is worth the effort.

As a femme that loves to shop for Butch clothes (not for me silly) I would like to add there are many pieces that can be classy yet have an edge that is fun. European sexy. One of those is good leather pieces (yum) The feel and smell add a nice element. There are classic leather pieces that can be worked for a sexy variety, like black leather pants and a really good black turtleneck. With jewelry, don't forget some jewelry.Or a turtle neck with a classy leather jacket. Or cashmere mixed with leather pieces. The textures make you fun to snuggle up to........

I realize you all have your own styles, but it doesn't hurt to chime in. Also an EBAY tip*** Don't be afraid of EBAY stores in other countries if their shipping is reasonable, and their rating high. I shop all over the world, and find there are countries where your dollar goes further. Especially with Leather and jewelry. I have been very happy with my foreign country purchases. Amazed even. Also buy several pieces from the same vendor and you often get lower shipping.....

:wine:look forward to uhumm seeing you all dressed up.....

I love ebay for vintage clothing. I've scored some fantastic vintage waistcoats and skinny ties. Sadly items that actually fit me are few and far between. Age 14/15 is my size :D Ebay is great for finding Levis 501s too, I have loads of pairs, they look great with Harley boots, a funky shirt and a jacket.

Best thing about living in the frozen tundra now: Being able to wear button downs and my ties. When I lived in the South, there were about five days a year that were cold enough for even long-sleeved button downs. Of course, the flip side is it being so cold you don't take your jacket off, so nobody sees it. LOL

For anyone to post in about butch clothing, and styles. I always like to see what we all put on!

And no, this is not a butch cock & packing thread :superfunny:..... there is one of those already!

So, what are we all wearing these days? Casually, to formals.... to work?

Just checking out the threads and stumbled across this! Love a 3 piece suit with a button down shirt, cufflinks, tie and brogues but that's more for an occasion - theatre/opera or a special night out/party. For more of our community events/clubs I like my leather braces, shirt, jeans and boots. Right now, it's so hot here... cargos and wifebeaters or a tshirt.

Sometimes, too often, really, I find myself posting and then don't go back to thread :byebye: I caught this post today that MasterWolf posted. It reminds me of a thought that passes through my mind when I've read about the femme clothing swap ... that is, are there any butches who might have interest in the same?
My buddy Alex is currently the recipient of shirts that don't fit and also a vintage jacket bought from eBay which was incorrectly sized :crybaby: Gawd I loved that coat! Leather buttons ...
Anyway, does anyone else have items of clothing and have interest in some sort of swap? Or, should we do this at Reunion? Just curious.

Unfortunately, I can't wear a men's suit to work ... my gay male E.D. would kill me. Long story ... There aren't enough occasions for me to wear them, but I do seek opportunity to do so. Haven't yet worn a tie with button down ... it has been a no no within certain (older and well heeled) fashions.

Where I have shirt interest is in the "cut away" shirts worn in Europe. They've taken off in the states, and even in some shops on eBay. Here's a link to one such shirt not so much the color, but the design. They are mostly worn to accommodate the large knot tie: http://www.morcouture.com/steven-land-peach-cutaway-collar-dress-shirt.html

Also, if you don't have a short neck, the long neck shirts have become a fad in some circles. Some of these are rather outrageous, IMHO, but there are some beautiful designs. The inside of the collar and inside of the cuff are made with contrasting colors and/or design: http://www.morcouture.com/axxess-light-grey-stitch-highcollar-shirt.html
Note that these are shirts NOT to be worn with a tie ...

BEST FIND ON EBAY for getting a shirt that fits properly, a problem for many of us, at reasonable cost is Everything Bespoke (for anyone new to the term, bespoke refers to tailored/made to measure clothing). If nothing else, the information provided informs one about how to measure for a man's shirt. But, to have 3 shirts made for your measurements for under $100 is simply awesome! http://stores.ebay.com/Everything-Bespoke :hangloose: No more shoulder seams on the biceps! :lol2: And, yes, they also make pants. I'm saving up. Even in the men's section on eBay it is hard to find trousers to fit my long legs (w). I'm saving up!

I have found that dress shirts from Express (men's) have always fit correctly....length in arms and of course, shoulder seams. The biggest downfall for butches...wearing shirts that have shoulder seams down on their biceps. Bugs me. I know it is tough to find ones that fit, but I don't think a lot of folks even think about it. It makes a BIG difference in how well a shirt looks.

(side note: it has been quite a few years since I bought from Express, however. I bought like 10 shirts (including doubles) in practically every color they had at the time!) Oh, also Calvin Klein works for me as well, not as perfect, but that has been where I have been purchasing the last few years since I now have access to an oulet store.

Many butches/FTMs have used the Frog bra from title nine sports alone or in conjunction with binders. I have been meaning to come on to post to let folks know that title nine is no longer making it, and evidently, the replacement sucks according to the comments and riot over the discontinuation of the Frog Bra. Supposedly, it was discontinued b/c they were unable to get the fabric they had gotten in the past.

Here is the replacement.

How things fit ... according to one's shape. I include the measurements to make sure that a shirt fits my waist, abs, and, if long tails, hips. I can't wear a fit shirt because, while they may fit my chest, they do not fit the rest of me, and I am uncomfortable in snug clothing ... well, some exceptions there, but I ain't talkin' bout that!

Well, they are referring to "breast reductions" b/c it is not an FTM site. It is just a regular women's sports clothing store.

I am including it b/c many butches use this bra (I have seen it noted on every b/f site I have been on), and some FTMs prior to reconstructive surgery. :-)

found this handy guide for folks who consider buying on line ... or, if you've never purchased from a mens store, can walk into one with the sense of knowing, and the confidence that brings, what size that you wear.
Andy's Guide informs the reader about such things as why someone with a, for instance, 38 chest wears a 42 jacket, etc. Again, for someone either new to such information or who has curiosity about tailoring cloths.

I was browsing a femme lingerie blog post and admiring all the thought put into sleepwear. I started to wonder, if a femme type person dresses up in a silk nightgown or pajamas, just for sleeping, what do they expect a butch type person to wear? She's sleeping in a silk chemise and you're in what? Somehow I don't think old flannel boxers and tattered t-shirts are the thoughtful choice. I can't for the life of me think of anything. Just wondering is all.

The only time I ever wear anything tattered to bed is if I am sleeping alone.

There are tons of sleep pants and pajama sets in all men's departments. If it's just sleep pants then I generally wear an A-shirt with them. (Clean with no stains or holes.) K-Mart, Target have plenty to choose from made from many different kinds of fabric. If you are a softer kind of butch, the women's departments also now carry sleep pants that are not all (for lack of a better term) girly.

My preference is sleeping with nothing on and she has nothing on. The feel of skin to skin contact all night long is unmatched. However the reality of night sweats makes sleeping nekkid with me feel like you are in a hot steamy jungle.

Yes, "real" tailors are few and far between these days. Lost art. I found a great alteration shop- that is all they do, but it is expensive to get this work done. I only use them for formal wear and higher end coats, etc. I try to stick to classic styles and good fabrics (which really has a lot to do with how things fit- not just tailoring). I want to get some value.

I agree, most places really only offer hemming!

Just want to say that one of my greatest pleasures has always been to go clothes shopping with the Butch in my life. Usually, I would only get to go along if something special and kind of fancy or dress up was needed, but oh my did I love to help my Butch look fly:-)

Living here in the Portland, OR area made shopping for men's clothes for a Butch fairly painless. Especially in Nordstrom (http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/men) and the mens clothing boutique, Mario's (http://marios.com/). First of all there wasn't any negative attitude. Second, both stores could tailor the suits, slacks and jackets to fit. I'm sure Portland has more venues now. I haven't been out shopping with any Butches in a long time.

Hey, thanks!!

Was just thinking about how I always enjoy a femme's input with clothes. This is especially true with shopping for suits or formal wear and getting measured and dealing with alterations. Frankly, it can really make a difference if there are assbites working in the store that have trouble with a butch customer buying men's clothes. A good support, I have experienced.

Plus, my femme friends (and late partner) can help me out with fabrics and colors, fabric weight and how they fall on my body as well as how many buttons looks best on a jacket (again on my body). Stuff like figuring out side or rear vents, cuffs or no cuffs on the pants- pleats, etc. gets crazy and I always do a lot better (and stay calmer) when a femme is along. Plus, it's fun! I used to love to go with my partner shopping quite a bit, too. LOL, we made Victoria's dates!!

I feel capable to do this on my own, but, the snark factor aimed at butches sometimes during this experience can really just make me pick something quickly and get out of there. Femmes can be really good at deflecting this stuff. Femmes, RAWK!
I appreciate your post!!

You know, I've never consciously thought about stuff like colors, type of fabric, fabric weight and fall, or side vs. rear vents, etc., when I've been out shopping with any of the Butches I've been with. However, now when I think back, I realize that I've always paid attention to such details when choosing my own clothes and when I've helped someone else choose clothes. Guess it just comes automatically. I appreciate that you've named all of those considerations.

And you are going to look fantastic! Scott sounds terrific! I so believe in taking along friends (femmes and gay guys sound perfect) when I need to buy a suit/tux (something for special times and that costs more than my usual attire budgeting). There are so many aspects I may not be taking note of while trying on a suit. Also, I have to admit that even when shopping in the Castro in a men's store, I still get a bit anxious and having consultants along is really helpful.

Yup, you are going to look great, plus have a suit that you will be able to wear for a long time!

My money is as green as the next person's- Thats how I look at it. but of course there is the lack of help that can tag along with "attitude". I don't know but looks to me that the drag king front row from the right seems to be enjoying her penquin suit :)

I love wearing sleeveless t-shirts for things like working in the yard, washing the car, the beach, etc. However, I am not so fond of the large arms holes that men's sleeveless t-shirts have.

Many years ago I found a solution to this....the boys section!

I have found that a boys XL is comparable to a men's Medium. However, they have smaller arm holes so that anything that you may be wearing under your shirt (binder, bra), cannot be seen.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find shirts that don't have juvenile sayings on them, but every once in a while you can find some plain ones with a simple Nike swoosh.

So, today was my yearly hunt for cheap nike/champion/whatever sleeveless t-shirts for the summer. I was successful! 4 shirts for around $60!

So, if you love sleeveless shirts but find the large arm holes to be in poor taste, hit the boys section of your local department store!

Good idea! I hate the huge arm holes on the regular men's. Just looks sloppy to me. But, that's just me, for me. It is hard to find cheap T's etc. to wear for kicking around that don't have stuff on them that I would feel like an idiot wearing!

i'm not very picky. i love the way a butch looks in jeans and t-shirt, or jeans and a "wife-beater" (at home). i also love the way a butch looks in a suit. i love the way a Syr looks in leather...all good to me! as long as a butch looks butch- and "butch" is an attitude, not a dress code! people dress differently for different things... i expect the clothes to fit the occasion.

Casually for me is simply a t-shirt and jeans day. Typically a day when i don't have work or my classes. but, then again, I usually look this way. On days when I work out, it's usually a t-shirt or undershirt and my exercise shorts. On lazy days. just my shirt and boxers. To work, a blue oxford shirt and pants.

I agree 100% !! I own my Tux I wear it for the Theater and dinning, but I also like to wear linen pants and linen shirts the Cubaneras style. They are very comfortable for the hot days in Texas but dressy and classy. I am actually wearing one on my profile pic. Shorts and Jeans are for my casual days only, The beach and running around doing errands .

This is so hard to answer, it really depends....

Depending on the weather:

skinny jeans (black, gray or denim)
banded collar, button shirts
Henleys
black leather jacket (I have 4)
Harley or garrisons boots
denim jackets w/cowboy boots (black or brown)
high top sneaks or not
cargo pants
American Rag (brand) shirts
board or cargo shorts (11" inseams or more)
polos
Porkpie/Stingy fedora or newsboy caps

Work clothes are a little more spiff.

Don't get me wrong, I love hour glass figures on others.....you all understand right?

Any tips for me?

If you have the means , maybe you might have your fancy duds taylored, OR buy something you really like, and have it altered:rrose:

Oh yeah- find a good taylor for the good stuff! Makes all the difference. I keep in mind when shopping that my actual cost includes tayloring when I am buying formal or semi-formal wear. Actually, I did the same in my het days for all women's wear and still have anything I buy with this in mind. I have some really great clothing from the women's department. Some items just fit better. And then there are certain men's brands that fit better than others, especially in pants/trousers. Honestly, I shop and buy brands/designer with the good stuff- men's or women's. Some cuts just work better for me.

Going to look for the kind of shorter shorts that just look better on me in the women's department. No, I am not one that cares about who looks at which side my zipper or buttons are on. I do care about my clothes fitting well and looking nice, or "put together well" for my body and all of its flaws as I see them. Well... except when home and working on projects. Then it is throw on the old stuff with paint splatter!

I'm a casual dresser, I like jeans, not the skintight types but not baggy either, and T-shirts or button-down shirts that cling to me. When it's hot out though I wear shirts that have short sleeves and a little tight on my waist, and jeanshorts. I wear tennies or boots with ranglars and levis, I really like the cowgirl style: wide-brimmed cowboy hats and sharp-toed snake skin boots with spurs and all the deal, but I generally only dress that way for special occasions or when I'm going riding.

I've always got a hat on though, around the house it'll be caps that I can wear around without them getting in my way. Idk why I don't feel like myself without a hat on. At work it's different since I usually have to dress very professional, but I never dress manly or particularly feminine.

I dress for comfort first, fashion second, weather third. That's not to say that I have some terrible sense of fashion though. Depending on the weather, you can find me in any combination of the following:

Straight leg jeans, never baggy
T-shirts, from band tees to everything else
Solid color polos
Knee length shorts, once again never baggy
Plain ole brown boots/flip flops/Converse
One of my many fitted caps

If I'm going somewhere that I need to look a little more put together I'll wear a nice pair of jeans/khakis/or other slacks, a button up shirt, sleeves always rolled up, a nice or new polo, maybe a tie.

Depends on the job and occassion. Lately my fashion choice of clothing consists of variety of jeans in different blues loose fitting. (Lucky, Wrangler, Sean Jean, Dickies, Silver Tab). Graphic T-Shirts, polos, button down shirts long and short sleeve. I have a couple pairs of nice black pants and tan pants, dress shirts, sweaters, and a few ties. A dockers black jacket. A pair of black shoes, a couple pair of brown leather shoes, a pair of roper boots, a couple pairs of flip flops, different colors of cargo shorts, basketball shorts, and jean shorts. Got to have a variety of sneakers in different colors (Nike and DC). All kinds of ball caps with sports teams and brand name logos, a couple cowboy hats. My favorite places to shop are American Eagle, Aeropostale, Kohls, Ross, and Brass Buckle. My hair style and cut changes everytime I get a haircut to short, mid length, spiky, faux hawk, straight. Gotta have some paste or wax to put in it. I'm a dude that enjoys a day of shopping!

Checking around in here for ideas. I have recently gone through some changes that give me the opportunity to reinvent myself as far as appearance goes. I used to (quite a while ago) dress in highly tailored very good quality suits for business and sort of sweatshirts and jeans for around the house and hiking/outdoor gear for well, hiking. Then I went back to school and changed careers to something that doesn't care what I wear, became morbidly obese, and sort of lost my sense of self along the way. I have now dropped most of the weight and have to make some choices about how I want to look now that I can fit into things I like. Times have changed, I have aged, and not being especially social, I don't really see or frankly notice what people wear anymore. I like to be comfortable yet presentable and my outlook on acquisition of material items has changed, preferring to scour about in thrift shops instead of designer digs. So far I am sticking to mostly jeans and trousers with sweaters or no logo t-shirts and button downs in long and short sleeves. I am however a stickler for quality fabrics and workmanship, and now that I can, I seek things that fit very well. Most of what I am actually wearing right now is summer attire, structured shorts just above the knee and decent polos or thin sweaters when the beach gets chilly. I don't want too many items, just what will get me through. If anyone has suggestions for must have basic staples, I would appreciate the advice. Kind of just don't want to frighten children on the street sort of thing, lol, my crew cut already confuses folks. :pointing:

:moonstars: I'll be honest as much as I love the 1920's tailored gangster look, it's not super practical for the times we live in. Something about a girl in baggy pants or cargo shorts, skater shoes and a tighter fitting top just gets to me. I love a dyke with big belt buckles, weird I know, but it's hot, and not those annoying western cowboy buckles either. I tend to prefer girls of the punk-rock nature, piercings, a mohawk or fauxhawk is very nice.

It's funny because I love when a girl's boxers are showing just the smallest bit from her jeans... it was hott to me, but if I saw a guy with his boxers showing, and it annoys the crap out of me and I have a strong desire to give him a wedgie... still not sure why I feel that way...

Insomnia has inspired me to dig up this dead thread.

I'm hugely into my clothes. I say it's because I was forced to wear articles of female clothing when I was younger and the memories were so scarring that I never grew tired of the liberation. ;)

I like to tell people I dress as nice as I can, as often as possible. I weave between dapper, sharp, and spiffy to male rockstar to country boy and everything in between.

I'm rarely casual. I put as much thought into my wardrobe as some of the femmes I've dated. -Chuckles-

I wear vests, button-ups, skinny ties, band shirts, graphic t's, blazers, leather jackets, skinny or straight cut jeans made of dark denim, ripped jeans, v-neck t-shirts, muscle shirts, Western shirts and other forms of plaid, oxfords, dress boots, Harley boots, combat boots, Doc Martens, Converse, Vans, chains, leather belts, studded belts, and the occasional wrist cuff or ring.

I have a collection of fedoras. My tie collection is bigger.

I wear suits when the occasion allows for it. I definitely love wearing them... sometimes with a tie tack and/or a pocket watch.

I like for my clothes to fit me properly. Baggy clothes make me look like I'm in middle school or something. I'm lucky to be the size I am because I have no problem finding men's clothes that work for me.

Oh, AlphaDrug, sometimes I wear belts with big, ostentatious buckles, too. :)

I'm still too "girly" to wear a tie or men's dress shoes.

I think we make the mistake here and in society of focusing on clothing as "men's clothes" or "women's clothes." Butches and/or transguys wearing "men's clothes" and femmes wearing "women's clothes." Truth is we can wear whatever we want and still identify as we want and those identities will still be legitimate to ourselves and supportive community. We should be more queer than that, damnit! :D Whoever wears the clothes owns them, imo.

If you want to wear ties or dress shoes from the "men's department" you shouldn't worry about whether you're "girly" or if the clothes are "manly" or something is whatever. If you like it and want to wear it you should wear it at least to try and if you're a butch woman wearing it, then maybe it's not men's clothes but butch woman clothes...or just Steph clothes :D

I love my ripped up hollister jeans! Sometimes AE. :) A good white tee with a beater underneath it (notice I didn't put the first part of that word in there, so don't judge me) I really dig plaid! So I wear a lot of plaid shorts. Hoodies, airwalks, converse and adidas. On another note if im just chillin around the house its a beater, and lounge pants/ball shorts depending on my mood. My favorite outfit to wear is.. a pair of super holy hollister pants, my black converse, a white tee and a black and white plaid button up over that.. my studded belt with 2 pistols on it, and yes. I sag quite nicely. :) Spritz some smell good on and thats it! ;)

Valet mag (http://www.valetmag.com/style/index.php?index1_bottom_module)

Time to go through the closets and seasonal wear, it doesn't take much to freshen things up. A new tie or pocket square can change a look a lot. Maybe add a vintage sweater or treat yourself to some new boots.

What are you doing with your look these days?

Time to go through the closets and seasonal wear, it doesn't take much to freshen things up. A new tie or pocket square can change a look a lot. Maybe add a vintage sweater or treat yourself to some new boots.

What are you doing with your look these days?

I love fashion, primarily smart casual. Increasingly, in addition to my ongoing love of all things Cavalli, I'm finding that I am attracted to designs and styles that are very traditional but with a very contemporary edge.

Holland Esquire, a small and not long-formed London company provides great designs and has become a favourite of mine over the past 18 months or so:

www.hollandesquire.com/

Also, very pricey, but I really love Ermenegildo Zegna clothing. Ermenegildo Zenga is an older Italian company and famous for its high quality woolen products. In my opinion, their clothing is the sort of clothing that, when you put it on, you start to feel a bit more attractive even on those days when you're not feeling that way inside yourself:

www.zegna.com/

I hate wearing suits so increasingly I wear smart casual in the office, except for when meeting external clients. In those instances, I still wear a (tieless) suit. My favourite suits for the office are by a traditional London fashion house called Gieves & Hawkes:

It's getting cooler so I get to wear the vintage, hand tailored waistc'ts I bought last winter.

I love smart.

Next week I'm invited to a 'hen night' (I think you lot call them bachelorette parties) and I shall be suiting and booting, vintage hatting and looking fiiiine. It'll be fun for me escorting a group of hetero girls.
I'm very good at holding hair back when too much alcohol has been consumed :|

I'm usually in suit and tie for work purposes, prefer french cuff shirts and lovely cufflinks. but I love western boots with a pointed toe and not to high heel. Old Gringo, Tony Lama and Corrals fit nicely for any occasion (my opinion only). I don't have enough boots, but I have enough, you know?

We must be twins! I love a good french cuff and have quite a selection of links. Sadly, I am down to owning only 2 pair of cowboy boots and 2 hats. Time to restock!

I really think that you all need to take pics of yourselves in some of these clothes that you're describing and post them in a "butch fashion" gallery.

And if the femmes here start referring to that gallery as "butch eye candy," you won't seriously mind, will you? ;)

Uh oh, nope, we can't do that in a thread. Photos of ourselves that is.*From the TOS: "Do NOT use threads on our forums to post your personal photos."* I can't imagine that it would be a problem though if some of the folks wanted to put pictures in their own gallery and then put a post in here directing to it. The free membership allows for 1-2 photos, and paid has more, maybe a good excuse to support the site more financially if you can.

Within the context of conversation we can link to images if I am not mistaken, and videos as well.

I would really like to see people put up ideas they would like to share for how we can develop whatever look it is we want to cultivate. I love looking at the highbrow links for ideas on what I might like to do. The reality is that I then take the ideas and find a way to replicate it, or at least get close, on a budget.

There are a lot of different looks out there and everyone has their own taste. From bad boi biker, to cowboy, to athlete, to Vegas baby! Tell us what look you like to rock.

I'll be back later with some thoughts of my own on the subject. Right now I have some ironing to do...

Okay, I just tested it. You can link to an individual pic in your gallery using the "insert link" in the reply editor.

At the risk of seriously embarrassing myself, I put a pic of myself in my current attire here (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11270&cat=688). No guarantee how long it will be there, but I want to encourage others.

Tell us what you are wearing and any relevant info about it.

Weekend morning, oxford button down $10 on sale boys uniform shirt back-to-school sale (these are surprisingly sturdy and the sleeves are the right length), thrift store sweater about $2, Timex weekender watch $28 with loads of interchangeable colored NATO bands at $10ea. Costco reading glasses, 'cause I'm old, $5.

I though maybe what we really wear, daily, in addition to the fancy stuff might be helpful.

Somebody else better do this too, or I'm going to feel awfully silly...

This weekend for me is shoe roundup time. Going through and making sure everything is in good repair, cleaned, and polished.

It's pretty amazing what a polish can do and if you haven't done it yourself before it is much easier than you might think. There are, no kidding, hundreds of videos on you tube for a quick lesson and the basic polish, brush, and cloth can be gotten pretty much anywhere from the grocery store to the hardware store. I have also found that around the holidays shoe shine kits are packaged up in nice sets for quite good prices.

Here is an easy brush on/off video good for daily boots

M_F8Db9thw8&feature=related

For a high gloss shine just search youtube for spit shine or fire shine.

Another quick and easy update/spiff-up is to replace the laces.
Especially with sport shoes and boots, changing up colors or materials can make it like getting a new pair of shoes, or an accessory to match whatever else you are wearing.

It's in the details. :)

you find interesting forums thats for sure lol. clothes for me consists of t-shirt jeans or loose fitting pants really for when i'm off work or going around town and half the time i'm wearing a baseball cap or skate hat if i'm to lazy to style my hair. when i'm meeting up with someone or going out its mostly a button down dress shirt and dress pants (that has a bleach stain thanks to when my grandpa did a surprise laundry day for me). shoes well mostly skate shoes hightops or boots i sway towards the skate shoes with skulls and black boots :koolaid: work i already "dress up" but during the summer its cargo shorts basketball shorts t-shirts and skate shoes or tennis shoes

Hey all,

I've been out doing a bit of reading and have been finding some really good articles. I thought that rather than re-invent the wheel, I would share some of what I have found in addition to things I will put together myself.

One stumbling block I keep running into is that the kinds of things I enjoy tend to fall into the category of menswear regardless of the gender of the person wearing it. This doesn't bother me in particular but I know it can seem offensive to a lot of folks by the way it is discussed, specifically oriented to men. Bio-guys.

I don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater, so I would like to try something. I find an article I want to share, I go through and tweak the pronouns so that it is more digestible to anyone who wants to read it with out the stumbling blocks.

Now, I didn't write this, so I want to give credit where credit is due and stay kosher with copyright goodies. So, I will only change pronouns and will make any changes in blue, I will also put an active link the original source at the bottom. You should go to this person's website if you like the article because there is a lot more where this comes from. :)

Why Give a Damn About Appearance
BY ANTONIO

Appearances matter in real and fundamental ways that affect a persons daily life – from how they are greeted when meeting others for the first time to whether or not they’ll be harassed while traveling.

A person doesn’t need to stay on top of every passing trend; however they should thinking about their basic appearance every day. Still not convinced it’s worth your time to dress sharp? Here are nine reasons why you should give a damn.

1. Clothing is the primary instrument in creating a positive first impressions
People are superficial, not just as a cultural phenomenon but as a hardwired instinct going all the way back to when our brains needed to make snap judgments on what was a stripy rock and what was a tiger about to eat us. We tend to be done formulating our initial opinion of someone before we’ve actually spoken to them. That means that your clothing is going to have a direct effect on people’s default assumptions of you — the better you’re dressed, the more respect and attention they’re going to automatically give you.

2. Clothing can increases your perceived status among your peers
Even after the first impression is over your clothing can help improve people’s reactions to you. Society is very visually-based, and better-dressed people routinely experience better treatment and service than their sloppier counterparts. Clothing serves as a substitute for character in the eyes of people who don’t know you well enough to judge you by anything else. That may sound superficial, but it’s true whether we think it should be or not. Your appearance may not mean much to you, but it does to the people who see you every day, making it worth caring about.

3. Dressing sharp helps with your confidence
One of the first pieces of advice in self-help books is almost always something along the lines of “Get Your Personal Appearance Under Control!” It’s good advice. People tend to perform better in life when they feel that they deserve to perform better. The automatic assumption that a well-dressed person should be treated with respect works when it’s your reflection in the mirror, too. A few minutes spent spiffing yourself in the mirror before you leave home reinforces the idea that you deserve success and good treatment in your own mind.

4. The requirements of dressing sharp teaches responsibility
As silly as it sounds, caring for your appearance will make you a more responsible person. You wind up keeping track of details like which shoes need to be shined and which shirts need to be ironed, and (unless you live with someone who loves you very much) you usually have to do those things yourself. It reinforces mental habits of attention to detail and planning ahead that translate usefully into any career or skill.

5. Good dressers notices detail in others
Once you start paying attention to details of collar shape, pocket square selection, and all the other little details of dressing well, you start to notice them on other people. And those people are noticing them on you too — expect, once you start really putting some time and effort into your appearance, to start seeing approving nods from other well-dressed people.

<snip>

6. Dressing sharp makes you more useful at work
Doesn’t matter what your job happens to be and who you’re working for, or even if you’re your own boss — if you’re well enough dressed that you can step away from work and into a meeting with a client, customer, or supervisor without advance preparation, you’re more useful. Having the casual, day-to-day presentation to step into any situation and look respectable is a huge advantage in the working world.

7. Colors and patterns speak for you
Once you start to learn more about them, specific colors and patterns begin to display their own unique advantages. Blues convey youth, browns openness and trustworthiness; deep grays somberness and dignity — each can be the best choice for a situation where many other colors would be equally appropriate but not as ideal. And by thinking about colors and patterns in a meaningful way rather than just throwing together anything that doesn’t clash too badly you may save yourself from being the person whose tie keeps seeming to ripple on TV someday…

8. Specific clothing pieces make statements about you
Uniforms and semi-uniform looks like the doctor’s white coat are obvious symbols of the wearer’s status or role. More subtle effects can convey nearly as much detailed information for a person who takes their time to plan the outfit well. From a bolo tie advertising a reckless, cowboy attitude to a pinstriped suit in the colors of a favorite baseball team, clothes can proclaim everything from your profession to your passions — or both at once.

9. Good looking people call the shots
When all’s said and done, the best reason to take time with your clothing and appearance is to take charge of your life. Well-dressed people have already taken the way the world sees them into their own hands, and the added respectability and authority people afford them allows them to call the shots in group situations as well. Giving a damn about your appearance is a way of caring how much control you have over your own life — not just over what color of tie to wear this morning.

The original article can be found here. (http://www.realmenrealstyle.com/looks-matter-men/) It does use male pronouns, I happen to think the information is genderless. My opinion.

This is the butch attire thread. There are as many ways to look butch as there are ways to interpret the word, we all carry it our own way. I would love to hear what others think about the subject.

Ideas, resources, stumbling blocks, you name it. I bet it would be interesting to discuss.

Regardless of what department or store one's clothing is purchased from, I believe the key factor is feeling good about how we appear. When we feel good about what we are wearing, we are more comfortable, we come across as more confident, and are more likely to be listened to. Paying attention to personal grooming speaks volumes about who we are, and increases our chances of being seen, for all of the right reasons. Ultimately, I think its most important being comfortable in our skin, but perhaps that is another thread.

I think you are absolutely right. It doesn't matter which area one selects from, I get things from women's, men's, and even kid's departments. Especially in less structured or tailored garments it is very hard to tell any difference in a lot of cases.

It is about how we feel about ourselves and how we want to present ourselves to the world. This could just as easily be about femmes. This is butch attire and the vast majority of us are biological women (at least at some point). It is about personal style, fit, and fun.

Personal grooming is a big part of it too. I have seen the recent threads about lingerie and about morning routines in the femme zone. I thought it would be fun to have this counterpart in the butch zone. I didn't start it, but thought a bump was in order.

All aspects of butch presentation should be welcome here.

For what it's worth... my personal Butch Fashion Equation looks something like this:

Fade Haircut + Pullover Knit Shirt w/ Collar + Black or Denim Jeans + Sturdy Shoes/Boots + Stainless Accessories i.e. Belt/Watch/Earrings + Tailored Coat + Cap + Messenger Bag = Feelin' Good

This speaks a bit to something I posted a couple of weeks ago.

I know I have been posting about my own interpretation of butch attire, but one thing I'd like to address is fit.

It can be hard to find the things that we want, depending on what we want that actually fits. My own preference is for menswear or what approximates that look to me. I have a bio-female body, sometimes this can pose a problem. I also trend (now a days) on the just one size below what is commonly available in most mens departments. Frequently, this means calling in my tailor to the rescue. Sometimes I just want to find things without going through that extra step, especially if it is for casual everyday wear.

I have found something that helps me is to look at all of the areas and not get hung up on what department it comes from. Due to age and gravity, typically mens clothes are cut closer to what I need, this was not always the case and so today I still try to have an open mind. Case in point, I put a pic of myself here (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=11514&title=taking-myself-to-the-m&cat=688), I cannot say how long it will be there, but it is now.

I this photo I am wearing mens jeans from costco $12, button down shirt from the boys (it fits) school uniform section of a discount store $10, a jacket I found in the women's section of a thrift store $3 and indeed the label says 'LL Bean women'. It is comfy like a hoody or something but I like it better, it has some fun belting and such on the back.

My point being that for casual stuff it is possible to inexpensively put together stuff that fits pretty well and looks better (on me) than sweats. Some can pull that off as athletic, I'm not one of them. By being willing to shop mens, women's, children's, discount and thrift stores. It doesn't have to take a lot of resources or time, just keeping my eyes open.

My thoughts as I was heading out to the movies the other day, (now if I was with someone I would have spiffed up, but I was comfortable) :)

I'm still learning how to buy clothes for my butch. I went to buy some summer clothes for her back in May. Since she buys her clothes in the men's department, i thought well, that's easy. Heck i raised two boys so i thought i knew how to buy "men's" clothes.

But, because she likes those long shorts and i wasn't quite sure about sizes and styles, what i got originally didn't work.

The shorts i got were too big and too baggy and came down way past her knees, actually just above her ankles, and the shirt was stripped and way too long and came down almost to her knees as well. OMG she looked like a 7 year old school boy. It was funny and cute as hell, but didn't work. She's probably gonna kill me for typing about this.

I totally failed my first try. I did take them back. Size is very important and style is HUGE with the results of how it looks on a butch. Not just anything works.

I'm getting better but it is truly a learning experience.

Edit: Just realized this is the butch zone. Pardon me if i am intruding. I suppose the name should have given me a head's up. But, i'm really tired, so forgive me.
