I, the Queen of Boring Threads, figured I should start this one because I am sucking at getting an appropriate amount of sleep. So I thought we could share each night (or some nights) and give each other tips and support in the process.

I figured it would also make me more conscious of really thinking about it if I have to document it.

I will start tomorrow.

So, folks, whenever you feel like it, share how many hours of sleep you got last night and if you want, related stuff, your sleep goals, what gets in the way, all that stuff.

Thank you NYCfem.

I got 6 hours of sleep last night. I have a strict routine at night because my days are so busy and long. No caffeine at night, eat an early light meal and no distractions like TV or internet.

I need a strict routine. I cut out all caffeine (except for an occasional 1/4 cup of decaf in the morning) since 2007. I'm horrible about getting off the Internet and horrible about eating too late.

As a field biologist for decades I trained myself to be strict about my body. When working 12 hours a day in 100 degree weather you develop survival behavior. Hydration and sleep are key.

Thank you for starting this thread.

I think I got about 6.5 hours last night. I really need between 8-9 hours per night to feel human and not grinchy or fussy.

I probably got 6-6.5. Something in there. Standard weeknight. Probably a little less if you count times waking up and trying to get back to sleep.

I function okay on that amount of sleep but am a little better on 7. 8 can feel like too much but once in a while it happens and is good.

I sleep 7-9 hours a night and never have insomnia. I MUST wear earplugs or I hear every noise and wake up all night long.

Most nights I sleep for 8-9 hours, last night it was 8 hours. I fall asleep nearly as soon as I am in the bed, and am able to fall back to sleep easily after waking for bathroom trips.

Where I have to be super strict with myself is with shutting down the TV, & computer at a set time, also ending phone conversations, and making myself go to bed. So I have a bedtime routine of sorts that I begin about an hour before bedtime that involves little things such as turning on the bedroom lamp & shutting down the other house lights except for the room the PC and TV are in, take Sadie out for last call, silence the ringer on my phone and then finally shut down the PC and TV at a set time. This allows enough time for my mind to put the day away, if you will, and prepares it for sleep.

If I disregard this schedule the rebellious little kid in me will take over and stay up all night playing online and watching movies, then it takes me a week to get back on track.

I usually get 7-8 hours of sleep. The alarm wakes me most days, but I prefer to wake up on my own. I'm tired because I don't want to go to sleep. I'm like a little kid being forced to take a nap. I don't wanna. I'll do anything...watch TV, a movie, chat, Facebook, YouTube...anything to stay awake.

8 to 9 hrs. of sleep are good for me.

I am a firm believer in "settling my mind & body down" an hour before bedtime. I do not go online after early evening nor do I watch a lot of "news".

My routine is to eat dinner around 530 or 600pm...so as not to go to bed with a full tummy. I rarely drink caffeine, due to atrial fib, so that is not an issue for me anyway. I like my room as dark as possible, & I have slept with a fan on my face & upper body for many decades, and that white noise helps me not hear outside my room noises.

I play with my little dachshund Hopey on my bed a half hour or so, & that is very relaxing for me. She LOVES it, sleeps better in her crate also.

Then do my night routine brush teeth, wash face, etc.

I usually fall asleep as soon as I lay down, & wake sometimes for BR breaks, but usually able to go right back to sleep.

I awaken around 815 am most mornings, rarely am I asleep at any later than that.

My routines are fairly consistent, & work for me. I try to exclude any mental stimulation & filling my belly late evening. I am pretty relaxed so am able to sleep well each night. Sometimes I waken during the night & brain engages, but I try to mentally shut it off again...lol.

Last night was 7 hours. I usually sleep 6 to 7 hours. And i usually wake up every 2 hours or so since i had a heart attack years ago. At first my doctor prescribed Ambien to help me sleep through that night, but that left me feeling groggy and goofy in the morning so i nixed that. Now he's prescribed marijuana. I still wake up every couple hours but it's easier to fall back asleep if I have a toke or two before bedtime and there's no after effect in the morning.

I woke up in the middle of a heart attack and I think that's why I wake up so much when I sleep—subconsciously scared I'll have another one.

I don't have a television in the bedroom and often go to bed with jazz playing timed to go off after 30 minutes.

I was a toker before it was prescribed, but never at bedtime (I saw that as a waste) until I got a prescription for it to help me sleep.

I actually got 9 hours last night, my body is already set to work mode so probably no sleeping the rest of the day.

I have a hard time falling asleep though and I wake up a few times in the middle of the night, none of the OTC medications or ones I have been Rxed, work to help me sleep. So I just deal with it.

You thought this thread would be boring, but it is something that has taken up several pages in the zombie thread. Some people have such a hard time with getting enough deep restive sleep...great thread idea!

The last couple of nights have been short on sleep. I went to the dollar tree to pick up a few things so while I was looking around I found a paper back book on the last Godzilla movie by Toho & company. I figured for a dollar it cant be to bad, besides I am huge fan of the big lizard. It is a good read plus clearing up some pointers from the movie that I didn't catch. I think I had a total of 6 hours sleep. Yes I'm putting the book in my collection of Godzilla stuff... right next to my light up, smoke blowing toy Godzilla that's about 40 odd years old that I have had since the movies have been coming on.

I got eight hours of sleep last night, and I was grateful for it.

I go upstairs early and read in bed or play Words with Friends, and I rarely have any trouble falling asleep.

I do take a combo of prescription drugs to help me stay asleep, but I do struggle with waking up too early.

It is very hard for me to do my best job as a teacher when I don't get enough sleep.

I finally started asking other teachers what Sunday nights were like, and

I discovered that several of my colleagues feel incredibly anxious. August is like the mother fucker of all Sunday nights.

Total sleep for Friday night (2/3/17) to Saturday morning (2/4/17): 13+ hours

Last night, Friday night, I ate too late, and Indian food to boot! I got in bed at 11:05 PM and fell asleep by 11:30 PM. I took an anxiety pill (Klonopin), wore ear plugs, and listened to a book on CD ("Falling Apart in One Piece") on noise cancelling headphones. BB, my husbutch, was out with a friend that night, so I was asleep before she got home.

I woke up at 6 AM in a state of very strong anxiety, specifically about a single colleague who I have to depend on for catering my events and who tortures me by purposely doing everything wrong and making herself inaccessible and being so mean. Normally I wake up at 5:45 AM to go to work so the fact that that is the time the anxiety kicked in about work issues would make sense.

Everything about this woman and our most recent interaction on Friday started to loop in my head. I tried to distract myself by going on to the computer from 6 AM to 7 AM but it didn't really reduce my anxiety. I also did a scratch-off just in case this worry was for nothing because I might find out I won millions of dollars. Alas instead of winning I paid what they call "the poor man's tax" (the cost of a scratch-off ticket with no win).

I wrote a short email to myself with a few simple sentences of what I would do next in trying to get to the next step I needed with my difficult, mean colleague at work. I think that was helpful because it interrupted the "worry loop" a bit. It gave me a plan for what I would do on Monday, a first step.

Then I took another anxiety pill (Klonopin) and an Ambien (sleep pill) and went back to bed from 7 am to 2 pm. That felt really good. And when I woke up I was not anxious, though BB gets a little annoyed that I sleep so long on weekends.

The thing is that I get like a literal "nap" instead of a night of sleep during the work week which I am trying to change so I do all my catching up on sleep during the weekends. Last night was a particularly rough night. Usually medication is not involved to the extent it was last night.

Despite all these issues, I'm really glad that I got in such a much needed catch-up on sleep. Until I get my weeknight sleep under control, I depend on the sleep I get on Friday and Saturday nights when I don't have to work the next day.

This is a weird first post but the point of the thread is to keep it real. Thanks for reading if you did and I'm always open to suggestions as you get to know me and my sleep issues. I value the support of the BFP community where I can be myself.

I love your threads, Jennifer!

I got about 6.5 hours of sleep last night and that is a LOT for me. I generally get about 5 per night. Every now and then I will get up to 8 or even 9 hours if I am exhausted but that doesn't happen often.

5.5 hours last night, which meant I was well rested. My preference is to read for about an hour before I turn out the lights, but lately, it seems that as soon as my head hits the pillow, my eyes want to shut.

You forgot to add Harassed your buddy by phone between 11pm to 1am, then let your poor chihuahua outside with his diapie still on because you were half asleep...

For me, when my buddy isn't harassing me, I sleep about 2 or 3 hours at a time, wake up easy, toss n turn, flip n flop, then try to sleep the rest of night until dogs get me up around 6:30-7:30...

Something else that helps me sleep well is getting into a warm bed on cold nights. I have a heated mattress pad that I turn on (full blast) 15 minutes before bed. When I get in the bed it's nice and warm and I turn the temperature down to low. The low setting keeps the bed just warm enough that, when I turn over, there aren't any cold spots (since most nights I sleep alone).

I think it makes a difference.

I went to bed at 4 AM but popped wide awake at 7:30 and have not been able to go back to sleep since then.

I got around 8 hours last night, but it was broken. I fell asleep in my recliner around 9, and when I woke-up I still had to take the dog out and take my medication before I could go to bed.

I feel a bit dull, but hopefully my coffee will kick me into gear.

Sometimes I can't fall asleep due to stress loads : for example, since last November, due to body injuries, I find I sleep due to my body caving in to the need to heal? In an other example, I've got immediate family crises in progress (my aunt passed away last night, my sweetheart's health condition is topsy-turvy due to cancer chemo treatments, or my mother's obsessive control tactics, etc)....this kind of stuff is wearisome, and becomes problematic if I allow it to have power. I do a L O T of self care during really stressful events. Some things I do to alleviate stress in my life is to detach (let go) from things or people or events. I let go because I want the the problematic issue to lose traction. I do that because there's many facets I am not always attuned to or have time and energy to problem solve. I put myself first, as much as possible. Sometimes though, there's nothing like a good cry to release pent up stress. Sometimes though, no matter how I try to put me first and take care of me, stressor's are still there, seemingly alive and thriving. It's such a tricky thing to do, the things I do to cope with things that really stress me out.

Last night I got about 6 hours of sleep. Three days ago I was up early 48 hrs, but then slept about 9 hours. My sleep patterns are somewhat out of sync, nowadays, but I rest when I can, and when I can, I sleep for as long as I am able to.

I'd say, on average, since last November, I get around 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. It feels heavenly, though, if I've slept more than 5 hours.

I got 7.47 initially BUT Hope was whining to get out of crate & in bed with me, so I did get her. We cuddled up & slept another hr & some change...it felt great.

Hope is my 8 year old senior dachshund who is blind...she has optic neuritis & nothing can be done about it. Prior to me she was in a hoarder house with 59 other animals. She has been used to breed & neglected, has horrible skin condition, & isn't aware of when she has to poop.....BUT I love this little girl & all she wants is to just be loved & close to me. She is so sweet!! to have been so abused for 8 years!!!

Sorry, I derailed....carry on

Last night I ate late and fell asleep at 1:30 a.m. Since I only work weekdays this isn't such a big deal, but I should still get out of the habit of eating late. I then woke up at 11:30 a.m. which gave me a total of 10 hours sleep. Again, this allowed for some catching up on missed sleep, so I was happy about it.

It feels good to sleep long sleeps. I have all kinds of interesting dreams. I didn't take/need any anti-anxiety or sleep medication, so I think it's easier to remember dreams that way.

I ate late again as usual. I still need to interrupt that habit. I took an anxiety pill (Klonopin) and got in bed at 11:30 PM and fell asleep at 12:15 AM. Then I woke up at 5:15 AM with anxiety about a plumber we paid to worsen a problem for us.

In total I got 5 hours of sleep. Since I caught up on sleep over the weekend, I'm hoping I can pull things together for tonight's sleep. I think Monday is not as important because it's only one night.

I really need 8+ hours of sleep to feel my best.

Ugg

I slept around 7 hours total, but it was broken up by severe leg cramps. I know better than to do so much in one day...and then I put our friend Hal in my recliner for the evening which left my legs dangling for hours, and my legs and ankles swelled up.

My cramps were in my feet, and strangely in my legs up to my hips! That's a new one, and about as painful as they come.

I will probably catch a nap after I come back from an appointment later, otherwise I will sleep the evening away.

I only slept for 7 hours last night, which is not enough for me. I was awakened by Fedex ringing my doorbell; I had to get up because I knew they were delivering my monthly meat order and I needed to get it packed into the freezer.

I have gotten a little off schedule so now maybe I will take my butt to bed at a decent hour tonight.

I, haven't slept well in years, and I literally mean years. Ever since I was little, I could never sleep at night, I think it was the over active mind unable to calm long enough to actually get sleep. So I started to do things a little differently, scheduled classes for the afternoon and evenings instead of mornings etc. Now I work night shift/graveyard shifts, and work with my inability to sleep at night instead of against it.
Lately, I think I just have too much to do and there isn't enough hours to get it all done, so sleep loses out. Last night.. I had the longest sleep ever of 8.5 hrs.. very broken, yet felt productive.

I stopped eating at 6:30 pm which for me is pretty good. However, I didn't go to bed until 10 or 11 pm (I need to post sooner so I remember or jot it down.). I slept until my clock went off at 6 am ... I think. Yeah, I definitely need to write this info down first thing in the morning because now last night feels like such a distant memory!

I never slept easily. My mom told me that it was so hard to get me to fall asleep. She would take me for rides in the car because that was one way she could have an easier time getting me to get some sleep. Then when my brother was born (her second child), she said, "It was such a relief to find that some babies do sleep!" :D

For the second day in a row I only slept for 7 hours, and today I paid for it emotionally. Long story short, there have been some major upheavals & changes at my primary Doc's office including changing their fax#. For this reason, the Doc's office and my pharmacy are not communicating well at all! I have been playing the go between in the midst of the two for a week while trying to get a refill on a medication that I take on a regular basis. This morning the frustration hit me hard and I found myself sitting here in tears. This is so not like me. I took me back to bed and slept for 3 hours; I felt much better when I got up the 2nd time. :)

It actually isn't real bad as we get to bed early, so we do manage to get our sleep. I do come home & stay up an hour or so then get a nap in then OR a later afternoon nap.

I adapt pretty easily wherever I lay my head usually, so I sleep rather well there. It is a comfy KS bed to boot!!!

My sleep usually is good sleep, even when I waken for BR break, I can get right back to sleep. On occasion I sleep night through.

Dreams I rarely remember but do know I have them.

Yesterday I had the snow day off from school, so I was basically like a cat. After waking up at 12:30pm, I had a snack, and then slept again from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Then I had dinner and slept from 11PM to 5AM. So if I count my nap plus the night, I slept 10 hours. I woke feeling rested and then felt awake all day for work. I think it would be great if every Thursday could be a snow day.

Last night, I slept from about 11:30 to 3:40 when I got up, went to the restroom and repositioned myself and then contemplated getting up and taking some Aleve as I was cramping really badly but I eventually dozed back off around 4:30 and was woken by my alarm a few minutes after 6 so I got about 5.5 hours.

I am not amused.

I tried to make it to bed earlier last night; I really did. But my evening shower woke me up too much and I caught a second wind and didn't get tired enough for bed until the eleven o'clock hour again. I didn't wake at 3:40 this time, though. No, it was 3:37.

One bathroom break, once around the house and a lot of peeking out to see what the snow plows were doing and how much new snow had fallen and then I was ready to slide back under those super warm and snuggly covers. I still didn't get to sleep right away but I dozed off and on until around 5 and then my alarm woke me at 6:30 so, all in all, it was about the same as the previous night except I'm in a lot more discomfort now as I have two continuous days of heavy snow shoveling under my belt. I had to pull out the Icy Hot this morning.

I got in bed at 9 pm and then I think I fell asleep around 10 pm (I listen to an audio book as I fall asleep). Then I woke up at 9 am.

I've been taking Zyrtec (OTC allergy med) in the evening, and it seems to have lovely sleep inducing properties.

I've gotten so much sleep this weekend. I hope I can carry that into the work week which is when I start to get not enough sleep.

I had Sunday night anxiety, a "the-day-before-work-after-the-weekend" thing. I also had worked out at the gym, and finished at 6 pm, but my heart rate was still on the higher side.

Sometimes going to the gym, especially if early, can make me tired, but other times, obviously especially on the later side, it can keep me up.

I took Ambien at 11:40 PM because I didn't want to start the week out on too stressful a note.

My Monday night sleep was awful. I was tired from the night before, and sometimes that leads to me eating a big dinner and procrastinating doing my evening tasks, and then it is a cycle that continues during the work week.

It is really bad this week! Last night I slept from -I don't know- maybe 12:30 to 5:45, which equals 5 hrs and 15 minutes.

Then tonight it is 12:40 and I'm still up. My boo and I went out for Valentine's Day and that was extra stimulation after work which, as an introvert, can be a lot for me. And work was one of the most stressful days ever.

Today I dealt with a mean colleague, mentioned by me before on this thread, and somehow it is so upsetting to me. So tonight I stayed up googling how to deal with someone horrible at work. I found some helpful tips but if anyone on the thread has any, you can post and let me know. Her personality type is full force "my way or the high way" / nasty / sabotaging (etc.). And the admin likes her because she knows whose ass to kiss. It's causing me a lot of stress.

On top of that my job itself is very stressful so dealing with someone mean I work with just pushes me over the edge with stress. In my work, I am working with teen moms who are going through such life traumas that extend beyond an MTV version of "Teen moms." Today a girl who had her first baby in 8th grade just had a miscarriage and didn't know she was pregnant, and my emotions and feelings for what she was experiencing were intense.

My work stress causes me to take naps at night instead of sleep. I am able to get some awesome catch up sleep on weekends but the work week itself can be brutal for me. I don't do well without sleep, especially when it becomes cumulative. It's a new job and I am trying so hard but it is a struggle.

Tomorrow is going to be hard on my third night of a "nap" instead of a night of sleep. And it's supposed to snow and rain too. Sometimes I just have to think of surviving the day. That's what my mom taught me.

Sorry for those who are chasing that elusive deep REM sleep. I did okay last night; about 7 hours again and it's really not enough but it was my fault totally. I got wrapped up in dealing with the phone issue I've been having and then I needed to celebrate my success by watching some telly and then I realized, at 9pm, that I hadn't eaten dinner so I didn't get into bed until about 11pm when I should've kept a better eye on the time and not watched Bones.

But, it's Bones! And it was good and now I see where they are going with the final season and I. Don't. Like. It.

Rage against the machine! <----- says my brain when it was over

Luckily, my exhaustion kicked in and I just slathered some pj on my tooties, hands and lips and went to bed. I think I may have lasted about 10 minutes before sleep found me.

I'm so tired I barely have the energy to record my sleep. Last night I think I slept from about 1:30 to 5:45, like 4 hours and 15 minutes!

I am on a work week roll of not sleeping! The good thing is that once I hit Friday which feels so far away right now, I'm off for a whole week for a school vacation. It'll be sleep city!

Then I'll really have to start again to address getting sleep during the work week. The most I can say now is that it seems once I get too little sleep for one night, I can't interrupt the pattern for the rest of the week.

Perhaps I can make an effort to focus on getting a good night's sleep on Sunday night after the break and then see if I can keep it going all week.

I was at school late on Thursday night for open house for potential families.

I remembered that when Pete picked me up after last year's open house, she told me that her mother didn't feel well, and we got a call in the middle of the night that V had a stroke.

Pete is taking a night class this semester, and it's hard for me to fall asleep until she gets home. I have to stay alert to keep her safe, of course. So very late nights on Tuesdays plus waking up at my usual very early time makes for one tired middle aged math teacher.

I am a night owl, (part vampire perhaps?) who has a difficult time keeping "normal" daytime hours. It has become especially difficult now that I am retired. So I struggle to maintain daytime hours for a few weeks, then it only takes a night or two of staying up a bit later and I'm back to staying awake all night and sleeping during the day. This makes going to appointments for Drs. and such even more of a hassle than they normally would be.

That said, I tend to sleep much better when on my night owl schedule, 9 solid hours last night, but I would prefer to go to bed at 1 or 2 am and wake up at 9 or 10am.

The heart monitor kept going off, and I just as I would fall asleep again, it would wake me back up, *lol* (or not).

That, and I also just started taking Lisinopril (BP medicine), which actually helps me to sleep better. Hopefully the kinks in the heart monitor device episodes have worked themselves out because I plan on sleeping tonight.

I'm still in the hotel with BB and my mom. Actually last night was our last night here. I did fine eating before bed. I had a salad that I finished between 7:30pm and 8pm, and then I turned out the lights at 9 pm. My mom and BB were still up. My back had actually started to hurt from the hotel bed mattress so that made it harder to get to sleep. To compensate I used an icy hot medicated patch and took Clonopin (a PRN medication that relaxes mind and body). At 11pm my mom and BB went to bed and at that point I took an Ambien so that I would be more likely to fall asleep, as well as Advil for my back. Finally I succeeded. I'm glad I got an early start in going to bed. I slept 11:30 pm to 9 am.

9.25 hrs for me last night. It wasn't solid. I am having a time with my left shoulder! I could NOT get it comfy! I slept in intervals.

Yesterday I had to go over some legal stuff with my attorney's paralegal. It just stresses me out reliving the whole thing again...:(.

I went to bed at 1000pm, red some on my Nook, then was asleep by 1030pm!

About 5. Dad got me up by ringing his bell. 6 am and he wanted the blinds open in his bedroom. He informed me he was awake all night worried about bills and mom. I reassured him with automated call to bank telling him the balances of his accounts and investments and read to him the CT guided needle biopsy mom has scheduled this morning. Nurse will also be here to change his cath. A lot on his mind that he shouldn't be concerned with at 97 yeare old. "I got this, Dad. Rest. You need sleep."

Wow, do I ever know how to deprive myself of sleep on work nights! This was THE WORST!

I was coming off a vacation which is always hard.

Here's what went wrong:

1) BB wants to watch the whole Oscars

2) I get very hungry at 9 pm and have Brussel sprouts and cabbage.

3) I get in a lonnnngggg online argument with someone that achieves only stabby feelings (and I never use that adjective).

4) I can't find my anti-itch creme and I have tons of mosquito bites from having been in Florida

5) I wake BB up and complain about how all the family dynamics at a funeral we went to made me want to implode.

I then took an Ambien (sleep) and a Klonopin (anxiety) because I was in danger of getting no sleep.

It really sucks to get what feels like a nap instead of a sleep and then have a jam-packed day the next day.

Oy vey.

I got about 5 hours of sleep last night. My dentist was pretty rough on me yesterday so I took a pain pill and fell asleep by 10 pm but woke up at 12:30 am for an hour or so. I went back to sleep but had weird dreams until time to get up at 5 am. I am hoping for a nap later.

I've been taking my new blood pressure medicine for nearly 5 days, and yesterday was the first day I've recorded really good readings, so I'm thinking the medicine is helping to stabilize my heart condition. I also learned that I could use a particular function on my heart monitor, so the device wouldn't interrupt my ability to sleep.

Last night I went to bed shortly after 9pm.
I rose from sleep around 9am.

Best 12 hours of sleep I've had, since last November.

5 HRS?

Another bad work-night sleep last night. What a hard issue this work night sleep thing is to conquer! I think I slept maybe five hours, like from about 1am to 6am. So I am doing the thing where I accumulate lost sleep as the work week progresses, which is TERRIBLE.

Last night I had to go to part II of a family funeral (distant relative). It was a Shiva night (Jewish gathering at a home). It really stressed me out, more weird family dynamics.

I came home and ordered sushi which made me have to need a long time to digest because I'd noshed at the Shiva too. I'm guessing I slept from around 1am to 6am... at best! Mosquito bites also still bothering me. I have sweet blood where I get tons more bites than anyone else. Lucky me.

4 hours

Last night was yet another work-week-sleep-disaster! I had an important work day and I hadn't gone to bed to go to sleep until like 12. I wanted to fall asleep quick so I took a Klonopin for anxiety and an Ambien for sleep (Please note that I have taken these two prescribed medications some nights and not others at bedtime either together or apart at the same dose for over a decade.). Anyway, occasionally when I take them together I get hungry. I don't go into a state where I have no memory the next day, but I do get hungry and need to eat. Usually they just put me to sleep but this was one of those times where I got loopy and hungry. So I got up and snacked and went on the computer and probably didn't fall asleep until 2. I woke up at 6 for work so that was 4 hours.

I listen to books on CD to get to sleep. They take my mind off things that I might obsess on in waking life. I am re-listening to an interesting book called "An Angel from Hell: Real life on the front lines." It's a true story about a man's experience being a soldier in a war. You'd think that would be depressing, but the man has a very resilient spirit and he is quite funny (He was on MTV's Big Brother too.). So it actually puts me to sleep nicely, meaning I don't have to listen to it for long usually before I fall asleep.

Weird me.
