when you discover that the options you have are to stay in a crazy-making situation to be with your loved ones. to leave would be to break a promise you made to yourself that no matter how hard it gets, you're not leaving. and to leave would be to destroy your identity that you have built over years. hell is when you have to fight not to BECOME as crazy as the people that made the situation are. hell is feeling like you have to choose between that fear and the fear that if you stay, you will spend the years you are still healthy enough to leave wondering every day if you should...hell is being so isolated for so long that you have no-one to help, should you decide to leave. hell i know.

When you end your marriage but because you co-own your home with your ex, you can't legally kick him out, and you wouldn't anyway because his daughter (whose children you've been raising), her loser boyfriend, and her three kids are all there with you and if you kicked their mom and grandparent out, they'd take the kids no matter what effect it might have on them -- including threatening to move a 4lb newborn preemie who is on a heart/breathing monitor into a transient hotel -- making you the Evil One. Then your hell only increases when he's supposed to close on his new house mid-September, but it gets delayed to mid-October, then to mid-November with another two weeks after closing before they can move in because of repairs that are needed.

I am living in hell.

When the good and careful renovation contractors who've picked up your moldy floor after a destructive hurricane discover that the main beams, (sills), of your house have extensive rot which will be very expensive to fix, then they notice a problem with the foundation. Well, it's supposed to be a foundation, and the previous contractor who put it in charged you full price for a foundation, but it doesn't hold anything up, and it's not built right, either. The open floor has revealed that they never filled the block, which has been deliberately laid in the wrong place. They built a false wall across the front of your house that looked exactly like a foundation so that they didn't have to do any hard work. It's scenery masquerading as a foundation, and will need to be rebuilt with money that's supposed to raise the house.

Then the bonded, licensed, careful house builder tells you that raising the house to get a basement, which is the Holy Grail you've been working into your plans for several years, will cost three times the amount of funds FEMA will provide for raising the house, and will take three times longer than you thought, (as if you could afford it anyway). Then, when you come home from a long dentist appointment you discover that someone has slashed your tire.

You know that you're in Hell when the most pleasant part of your day was getting four cavities filled. At least my teeth look nice.
