I think I'd be frightened for him for all of the reasons you mentioned before.
I just watched a documentary on LOGO about being Palestinian in Israel. It focused on some gay men, but all the same I learned things I had no idea were going on.

I totally get you wanting to beg him to stay, I do. I also know the reasons you haven't. You are a good Momma and a selfless one at that!
