I totally get this one but I often see older folks writing in to Dear Abby bitching about not getting a 'proper' thank you!

This idiom is considered a Quasi-idiom in that an adjective is joined up with a noun, semantic phrase of thought. Barbed describes the type of wire, which is wire with intermittent barbs, used to fence out x, y or z, or protect x, y or z.

"Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder"...........

When you haven't been around or seen someone for awhile you're more fond of them than if they were around 24/7!
