Studio Visit: New Model

A ring at the door, putting down my tool I go answer it.
The new model has arrived, I'm glad. Guiding her into
my studio, I show her where she can remove her clothes.
I've petitioned off a small part of my studio for
the models to have a space.

She follows me quietly. I go to another stand and prepare
for a new beginning.

The new model comes into the studio proper, nude, though
that is not how I "see" her; I see her as her most natural Self.
She waits for me to position the chair on the stand, it will be
a sitting pose.

I ask her name. "Elena.", she says.

Elena, sixty-five years old, Russian, and a writer.
Now in this country making ends meet by doing artist
modeling. I "see" her, and want to sculpt her pain, her
confidence, her sense of knowing that none of it matters,
and all of it matters.

Her "knowing" is etched on her face, her body. I don't ask of the pain.
I already know it. I ask about the days of sunshine, and joy in her
Russia, of her writing, how is it coming?

The sculpture takes a life of its own, with her energy, and mine.

Sometimes, many times, it's not about sex at all.

Traditional Spanish Flamenco Music

Flamenco in its strictest sense, is a professionalized art-form based
on the various folkloric music traditions of Southern Spain in
autonomous community of Andalusia, Extremadura and Murcia.
In a wider sense, it refers to these musical traditions and more
modern musical styles which have themselves been deeply
influenced by and become blurred with the development of
flamenco over thepast two centuries. It includes
cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance),
jaleo (vocalizations), palmas (handclapping) and
pitos (finger snapping).

The oldest record of flamenco dates to 1774 in the
book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso.The genre
originated in the music and dance styles of Andalusia, of
much older origin.[3] Flamenco has been influenced by
and become associated with the Romani people in
Spain, however, unlike Romani music in Eastern
Europe, its origin and style is uniquely Andalusian.

In recent years, flamenco has become popular all
over the world and is taught in many non-Hispanic
countries, especially the United States and
Japan. In Japan, there are more flamenco
academies than there are in Spain. On
November 16, 2010, UNESCO declared
flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral
and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
