Default Film buffs...........

Chicago International Film Festival Movies Until Sunday October 24 2021.

Some of the latest and greatest movies to hit the festival circuit arrive in the midwest during the Chicago International Film Festival, which present a lineup of more than 80 dramas, documentaries, comedies and foreign films, plus 10 short film programs. In addition to CIFF's home base at AMC River East 21, this year's festival expands across the city, with screenings at the Music Box Theatre and the Gene Siskel Film Center—plus drive-in screenings at ChiTown Movies in Pilsen.

Highlights of this year's lineup include an opening night screening of Wes Anderson's tribute to journalism The French Dispatch, a drive-in presentation of Todd Haynes' rock doc The Velvet Underground, Mike Mills' moving tale of a radio documentary producer (played by Joaquin Phoenix) C'mon C'mon and Denis Villeneuve's latest sci-fi epic Dune. The festival will also host the world premiere of two documentaries: Jesse Moss' inside look at Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, Mayor Pete, and the story of Chicago’s first Black mayor, Punch 9 for Harold Washington.

Other notable films being show include Andrea Arnold's eye-opening documentary Cow, the vengeful Western The Harder They Fall starring Idris Elba, Ridley Scott's latest period piece The Last Duel and the time-bending Colombian film Memoria, which features a haunting performance from Tilda Swinton.

You can find a complete list of films (including drive-in screenings), purchase tickets and learn about other programming on the Chicago International Film Festival website.

Default Check out the West Loop......

One of the distinctive features of the West Loop is its vast collection of street art created by numerous artists, present amid the streets lined with restaurants and on the side of overpasses and railway embankments. Painter and muralist Jenny Vyas is one of those artists whose work has helped to shape the former industrial area, adding splashes of color and creativity to the trendy destination for nightlife and dining that it has become.

A self-taught artist, Vyas first became inspired to paint while recovering from a breakup in 2013. She said that much of her work is inspired by “a lot of the darkness in life that we don’t really talk about.”.

Her latest show, “Awaken,” opened last month and is on display at Pilsen Yards through October 31. The show features 15 of Vyas’ paintings, all of which center on themes of vulnerability and finding strength through exploring one’s own demons.

“It’s the show I’ve been working toward for the last five years so it’s been really great to bring it all together,” Vyas said. “It’s my largest body of work, ever.”

Although she’s originally from India, Vyas has lived in Chicago for more than two decades and considers the city to be her home.

Default Time Out says 3 out of 5 stars Oooh Wee It Is specializes in over-the-top soul food dishes that are worth waiting in line for..

Oooh Wee It Is 3 E 83rd St (Chatham) Chicago

I’m of two minds about encountering a line in front of a restaurant when you show up for a meal. On the one hand, it can be frustrating to work up an appetite and arrive expecting to eat, only to have to join a waiting list. On the other hand, when folks are willing to queue up for a table, it typically means that the food being served is something worth waiting for.

Thankfully, the latter absolutely applies to the Chatham location of Oooh Wee It Is, where plates of delicious soul food are often overflowing—much like the parking lot.

Default A Guide to Apple Picking in Metro Detroit

It’s fall in Michigan, prime season for apple picking. The third top producer of apples in the U.S. (after Washington state and New York), Michigan has about 14.9 million apple trees on nearly 800 family-run farms.

A spring freeze turned blossoms to icicles, however, which means there are far fewer apples to pick. Several orchards and mills that traditionally offer pick-your-own apples are scrapping it this year, after losing a large portion of their crops.

There are still apples for sale in most orchard stores and at cider mills, who sometimes buy crops from others in the state. Be sure to call ahead for availability.

Default A few days late, but you can still enjoy...

Arguably one of the best celebrations of the year—National Dessert Day—is on Thursday, October 14! Satisfy your sweet tooth and take in the views at LH Rooftop, located on the top of iconic Magnificent Mile hotel LondonHouse Chicago (85 E. Wacker Drive).

We have rounded up the restaurant’s best dessert offerings below, whether you’re a chocolate lover or more of a fruit dessert fan.

Brownie a la Mode ($10) – A classic for any chocoholic, made with a warm Valhrona chocolate brownie, vanilla ice cream, cocoa, and raspberry

Berry Tart ($14) – Cool and refreshing, made with fresh berries, vanilla bean custard, and lemon curd

Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp ($13) – Tart with a crunch, made with fresh strawberries, rhubarb, and oat streusel

Crème Brûlée Bite ($11) – A traditional delight, made with vanilla custard and brûléed sugar

Pecan Sticky Bun ($9) – Served during brunch on Saturday and Sunday, topped with warm caramel sauce poured tableside.
