Another Day Another Jew

killed, another shul burned,

another school scrawled with

swastikas. What’s a Jew

to do? Carry on

as if nothing’s amiss?

Or revisit the list

she’s kept since childhood

like every other Jew

she knew: who would

take her in? Nobody

has offered to hide

her and who can

blame them? They weren’t

raised by a father who sleepwalked

while screaming in Yiddish,

a mother who stashed little piles

of money all over the house

in case the Cossacks came,

a grandmother who gnawed

chicken bones for hours

not one molecule of meat wasted,

a neighbor who wore

long sleeves all summer

so noisy nosy kids

wouldn’t see the numbers

crawling up his arm.

Her friends are good

people with kind hearts.

They pat her head

and reassure her she’s

being ridiculous. As though

that will reassure her.

As though Never Again

was just a slogan,

not an empty chair

at the kitchen table,

not a broken promise

to a fading photograph,

not a midnight prayer

whispered on sleepless nights

into God’s bent ear.

The Last Flame Last is a suite of 18 poems that explore the events of October 7th and the surge of antisemitism that followed, and how these events affected and continue to affect the author, a second-generation Jewish poet living in the diaspora of the United States.
