That is human nature. You had quite a few people planning on coming from out of town for the get-together. Did you not feel that any explanation at all was due? Even a simple, "it's a family/personal issue", would have sufficed and all this could have been avoided.

You say that people shouldn't conjecture, but yet you scold others for not considering it may have to do with a surgery your dad had 2 weeks ago. Would that not also be making an assumption? Regardless, I hope your father's convalescence goes well. My father had the same procedure a few years ago and did very well. I hope yours does, too.
