My favorite for cleaning, polishing, and stain removal is Barkeepers Friend. It comes in a shaker can, like "Comet," and I think it mostly contains borax. It does a great job cleaning stains out of the white, porcelain kitchen sink, removes hard water stains from the tub, and shines everything without scratching. I also buy Borax in a large box and use it as a laundry booster for odor removal.
My former mother-in-law taught me that if you put fresh lemon juice on stained whites and hang them out in the sun, the stain will disappear. Also, a toxic brew of half bleach and half powdered dishwasher detergent mixed with very hot water will make any whites gleam.

We have super hard water here in Tucson, too...it makes keeping bathrooms clean a real challenge. ![]() Baking soda works really well as does Comet. I try to make a paste out of both and (if possible) let it sit on the stains for a full 24 hours (well, the shower and sink at least). With the toilet I use a pumice stone. It's the only thing that works! My least favorite chore is folding and putting away laundry. Dusting is a close number two but I think that living in the desert where EVERYTHING is dusty ALL THE TIME has only made that chore worse! |

Timber has been an advocate of the toilet bowl cleaner Sno-Bol. We were talking with friends in Central Texas about it, and when we couldn't find it locally, we all chipped in and bought a case of 12 bottles of it. Shi swears you will have NO toilet bowl ring, when you use this product.
Timber's a master with making bathrooms sparkle. I'm so happy that shi's taken over that task, because my favorite products have always been spray-on tile cleaners with bleach, combined with Soft Scrub with bleach. Timber also clued me in that Magic Eraser works great on fiberglass tubs, too. We've not had any real good luck with getting the hard water stains off the tile, but I haven't given up yet. WT |

Laundry nazi here... so it works best in our home for me to handle it.. lol
Our relationship is fairly "non traditional", if there is such a thing. She works outside of the home and I am houseDaddy. The only "chore" I really hate is dusting. Most anything that irritates my allergies and asthma suck, however I up my meds or wear a mask if it is a really bad day. I also have a "thing" about putting stuff away. Love to do the laundry/ dishes.. hate putting them away. I have no idea why, LOL.. somethings just are! I know it's not great for the environment so I would only use it in dire situations and sparingly at that, but TSP once a year could help with the hardwater stains. If you own your own house you could possibly install a water softener which would also help. We are looking into doing that as well as a super duper mondo water filtration system next spring. Love the idea of a "cleaning" thread, coz I am a clean freak at times and it's fun to share it! |

I got into it when I lived in Mohave Valley,AZ and our water came from a well. The water had such a high iron content that it turned everything brown. So everyone told us about white out and Sno Bol, and I have used it ever since. And yes Diva , I love those Magic Eraser for cleaning just about everything LOL

My favorite cleaner is my[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQSJVK/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lp o-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0000E6EE5&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX 0DER&pf_rd_r=1VN45FD9Q2V83JF9G8ZN"] shark steamer[/ame]. <~~Click link to see it. It is getting a good workout with our flood and ceiling collapse. It sanitizes stuff like you would not believe. It removes any grime caught in cracks and crevices. It's awesome. Spray a little CLR around any hard water stains and blast it with the steamer and they come right off. Works great in the bathroom, kitchen, the car, the floors, everything!

I love sno bol and have used it to clean iron exposed sinks and tubs, but you have to have a well ventilated room because it is a very strong acid, and not good to breathe. Except for one time (described below) it was always great in the toilet as well. I have a house in MI that I have never been able to sell, so it only gets used in the summer. The toilet rings are pretty bad when we arrive. One year daughter tried about 6 times to get the hard water ring out of the toilet. Everything else was gone by the second cleaning, but the ring remained. I put CLR in the bowl and let it sit for at least two hours. Then I just swirled a brush around in it. Voila, the hard water crap was gone. Then I told my daughter that all I had to do was scrub it a little with comet, that it came right out, and that she was a wimp. Not until a few weeks later, when we had to CLR the shower head did I admit to her that I had used CLR on the toilet, LOL
BUT!!! Here is a simpler, funner and sexier way to keep hard water stains out of your tub. BUBBLE BATHS!!! Years ago I had such a high iron count in my water that Culligan said they could not even begin to handle it. I was using toilet cleaner every time I cleaned the tub, which was getting to my sinuses. Then I decided to use bubble bath because I was sick of looking at the rusty water while I bathed. After the bath - no iron stains. I still had to clean it with toilet cleaner about once a month or so, but the improvement was dramatic. As the tub was emptying, I just quickly rubbed down the inside of the tub with my wash cloth and had a clean tub for weeks at a time. Sharing the bath is even better. Make sure you get ph balanced bubble bath though, because the cheap stuff will tear your skin up after a while. Smooches, Keri |
