Halloweenie Hints, Tricks, and Treats

Ooooo, Halloween! I love Halloween! But not the way it is today, with chainsaws and gore--I love the Halloween of my childhood, with charming little kids in adorable costumes. Luckily it's still there, alongside the gore!

Our neighborhood association has a big Halloween party every year. Last year I told everyone I was wearing a Muggle costume. I don't think I can get away with that this year, so I finally decided to go as myself, but a little exaggerated. I'm going to splash paint on my hands and shirt--maybe a streak on my cheek, too--and make a necklace of sponge brushes, use a paintbrush--oh, or maybe a couple colored pencils!--as a hairstick (to put up my hair in a bun), and go as an artist!

Big bonus: two shirts, warm jeans and comfy shoes, since the party is in the neighborhood park and it'll be cold.

The thing I do NOT want to do? Be a judge for the costume contest. Guess what I'm doing.... yep, judging the costume contest... oy... glad I don't have to do it alone!

I am giving out olives for trick or treat...lol...

no, not really.

for cheap decor...

if you are a green person, save all those film cannisters and prescription bottles and use them to put pennies, candies and fast food coupons in to pass out on trick or treat night.

or you can poke a large enough hole in the lids and poke strands of xmas tree lights thru them. On the cannisters, you can use finer holes to make halloweeny type pictures, or an exacto knife to cut out halloweeny type pictures...

(everyone has wanted to know a use for them ...so here it is!)

I saw a really cute idea in a magazine....get the white paper bell decorations that they sell in party stores for wedding decorating, cover with white cheesecloth, a few bits of black felt for eyes and mouth...and instant ghost!! And they come in different sizes! Gonna hang them on my tree outside

Also, white coffee filters, a small rubber band, and a black marker...and you can hand out lollipop "ghosts" for the trick or treaters.

Not shure I will be home for halloween cause I have two nights of pool league and a rodeo at the fair to go to...my son may hand out candy..then he may not cause he will eat it all..if he dose eat it all he best not complain to me.

On Friday Concord will have the annual Candy Crawl - the downtown merchants will be handing out candy to kids from 3-5 PM. My boss and I will participate. Her dog will be there too. Last year he was rocking a pirate hat and had his photo taken with more kids than McGruff the Crime Dog who was across the street at the courthouse. This year he might be wearing this really cool "pimp" hat I saw unless I decide on the "headless horseman" outfit or the boss picks something up. Unless I find something much more unusual, I'll be sporting the purple Carol Channing bob wig and rhinestone cat glasses again.

I just had major surgery on my knee and don't really want to be hopping up and down to answer the door....I was thinking about putting candy out in a big bowl with a sign that says to be kind and only take two pieces....but I'm not sure how nice kiddies will be when there is free for the grabbing sugar lol.

Any ideas?

The other thing is that my friends and I are going to an 80's dance...we could rock the 80s look or we were thinking of being cats...with makeup and tails and our regular clothes. I know how to make a tail...or rather I have a theory in my head..but I'm not sure about the ears.

Has anyone made cat ears before? I was thinking if I cut out the material in the shape of the ears...then stapled them together with a wire inside they would stand up...but how to attach them to the headband?

I'll be googling cat face painting for sure lol

Hi MountainStar, put on the headband so it's stretched properly, then run a very light bead of fabric glue (or superglue) along the bottom of the ears and put them in place. Hold them until they set-----BUT be careful, you don't want the glue soaking through to your hair! You might want to consider using plastic headbands instead of fabric ones to avoid the glue soak-through. Anyhow, if the headband is on your head when you glue the ears to it, you will get them in the right place.

a few years ago i dressed up like a decoration scarecrow and sat outside with a "take 2 pieces please" bowl. I had newspapers sticking out my pant legs, shirt sleeves and around the neck and i wore a pumpkin mask that obscured my eyeballs.
the kids were all really honest or suspected i was in there because only 3 took more than 2 pieces and they only took a small handful - no one ran off with the bowl
i did have a lot of fun scaring the bejeezez out of the scoundrel sugar fiends
i wished for more

word of warning
it's all fun and games until you get smacked with a wiffle ball bat - those will leave a wicked welt
