I took my oldest niece and nephew and my four year old niece to see the new Karate Kid movie over the summer and truly enjoyed it.
The one movie that I would like to see is the new Harry Potter movie. I am also looking forward to the new season of Law & Order SVU coming out on NetFlix.

I don't see many main-stream movies any more, like independent/foreign films. And love old movies. But, I have found this thread to be a really good place to find out about ones I should take a look at. Always interested in "sleepers." I do want to see "Fair Game" when it gets to my local theater. Look forward to what you all have to say about it.
I will probably skip the US made "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Just can't wrap my head around a US re-make of this being very good. Who knows. Thanks! |

I finally got my hands on the movie Soldier's Girl, have to say that I'm really glad I did. I think it's probably the best transgender movie I've seen, particularly one based on a true story. While it dealt with the discrimination Calpernia and Barry faced leading up to Barry's death, the film's creators themselves didn't negatively portray either character (while also showing the problems and insecurities of the aggressors as well). On top of that I couldn't see any attempt to strip Calpernia's identity as an MtF away from her/put her womanhood into question in the end, which is definitely a great change. That's one of the things that really irked me about the way Boys Don't Cry was written.
If you haven't seen it, I definitely recommend it. |

We watched Easy A tonight. Fantastic! I loved nearly everything about this movie and thought some of the themes were very relevant to today's issues. It reminded me a tad of 10 Things I Hate About You, which I also loved.

Yes. It was an excellent film, but strange. The Black Swan has stayed with me since I saw it opening nite. Seeing hallucinations through another's eyes. Experiencing them as if they were one's own. Superb acting.

We saw When in Rome, The Expendables, and Tangled and we have Shrek 4 lined up and ready to go probably tomorrow. Tangled was excellent, if not a bit predictable, When in Rome was sweet, and The Expendables was like a dirty, gritty, low(er) budget Reds (not bad, just darker).

So, about five years after reading Steve Martin's Shopgirl, I got around to the film version.
I really enjoyed the novella--what's not to love about Martin, anyhow? But, I was scared, especially when I read several negative reviews, that the film would disappoint me. My verdict: yes, the novella is better, but the film does capture the overall sense of the literary piece. I think the novella wins because of its density--the source being the narrator's voice, which only seldom surfaces in the film. (Oh yeah, one of the criticisms was that Martin's narrative voice compromised his character's portrayal. I disagree; in fact more of those interjections--in a play, perhaps--would be advantageous).
