Coin Collectors? Anyone out there?

I just recently started collecting coins, both for investment and for the love of it. I particularly like collecting coins as art. Anyone else a collector? I would love to connect with other folks who do. Here is an example of what I am currently coveting:

What is that? I collected coins when I was in high school. I recently found it in my recent move. I am way behind in knowledge of coins these days! I look forward to connecting with coins again!

It's a silver coin from The Cook Islands commemorating Westminster Abbey. There were only 2,000 minted and they obviously don't circulate. The Cook Island and Belarus have some brilliant pieces.

I use to colect coins but have no idea where they are,but I do have a 125yo U.S. silver dollar back when a silver dollar really had silver in it.I had it checked once they said it was worth about $12.00 that was years ago..I just figure it may be worth more later so I hang on to it.

That is nice. So what direction are you going to take your collection? Commemoratives, US, foreign? I have collected Pre 1964 US Coins. I still run across these even today. I have a jar that I put them in and at some point will put them in the collect cases. So, I am not an active collector.

Mostly foreign commemoratives, most of what I buy is precious metals due to the investment factor. There are a few things I would like as far as US currency, like an original buffalo nickel, mercury dime, any coin that was made from silver. Remember, anything you think is worth anything don't handle it and don't wash it, that takes away from the value.

I will have to check for pre 1964 coins in what I have. Any particular reason for your collection strategy?

I picked that year because 1964 was the last year that regular circulation coins were 90% silver. The Kennedy half dollars were 40% silver through year 1970, then had no silver. So, I have Kennedy's up to 1970.
In pennies, I picked the 1958 as the collecting date as that is the last year of the wheat backed penny.
When I was in school I was a cashier at a High's Dairy store, so I ran across these quite often in the early 70's.

So I went through My spare change yesterday and it was fun, I found a 1919 wheat penny and a 1941 mercury dime and several other things that predate 1965, but those where the highlights.

That was fun...now I am looking around to go through other peoples spare change..lol

Yes, that is how I got a lot of my silver, pocket change. I really can't remember where I got the buffalo nickels and Indian head pennies. I started with the blue collector books for Lincoln pennies and Jefferson nickels.

Dude, I have some buff buffalo nickels (ones that the date is no longer visible) if you aren't picky about that, I'll send you one.

i do collect coins and bills....i am always looking for wheaties and bicentennial quarters(i have around $100 worth at the moment)--both,mainly,bc i just like them and they are no longer made...i also collect error coins--if i come across them..i dont buy them...working in the service industry once in awhile i come across old coins or silver ones(bills too). matter of fact i opened a roll of nickels last yr i had gotten from the bank(i do this with all coins i get for the store) and to my surprise i found a PERFECT 1935(or 38 cant remember) buffalo nickel..i mean it looked like it had just came out if a case...i was told buy a dealer it was worth only $35..hell i was excited bc i paid a nickel for it...i also collect foriegn coins if i come across them.

the only ones i will actually buy are the old silver dollars...and ive been known to just buy silver rounds..........everything i buy/get/pick up are for investment purposes--longterm....i recently purchased a 1925 stone mtn commomerative coin--a salute to the Ga soldiers..i got it for $25--which was an awesome deal.

i LOVe this stuff,and am glad there is a thread for it....looking forward to learning/hearing more.

Congrats on the buffalo nickel! That's a great find. I also collect (mostly foreign) commemorative silver coins. I am just starting though and have lots to learn. Welcome scooter.

I also collect some coins. My father (born in 1920) still has a lot of the original silver coins. He has a lot of the mercury dimes, buffalo nickels, wheat pennies, indian pennies, and even liberty dollars and half dollars. I have been through his collection looking time and time again.

I did want to share that a good way to find coins is to start cycling through wrapped coins from the bank. Let them know you want a few rolls and take them home and sort through them. You would be amazed at what you find sometimes. Keep the circulation running and you can build one hella collection. Just wanted to pass that tip on to fellow collectors. *Wink.


Oh. I also have hella large stamp collection too. Anyone here collect stamps too?

I used to dabble in stamps as a kid, but I didn't stick with it.

i also check Craigslist...when i first moved to Florida and decided to get into collecting a little more seriously i found an ad for 5 silver dollars pre 1900 for $40. one of them has a nice deep rainbow color to it.

Papa--good idea...at one time i had a teller that would call me and let me know when they had eisenhower dollars and half dollars. i was keeping my coins separated by denomination in cardboard cigar boxes,but i recently found wooden ones for a buck a piece so im about to switch to those.

just some advice i found very useful was to keep ur coins in plastic coin rolls--made for all denominations..it keeps them from rubbing against each other and scratching themselves up.

Good tips. I recently bought some paper coin flips to put Mine in, but I am not sure if it is going to be cost effective to do that as My collection grows, especially with coins that have already been circulated. I have also seen plastic sheets that house maybe 20 coins per sheet so they can be viewed without being handled.

I collect stamps. I have way too many at the moment. Need to downsize. Been more of an accumulator, not a collector, lately.

Today I added 18 Kennedy 1/2 dollars and a $2.00 bill that was printed in 1963, not a bad day.

I've dabbled in collecting some coins myself. I have a 1910 Barber dime,1948
Nickel, wheat pennies,Bicentennial Half dollars. All in good shape as far as I know.
I currently collect the State Quarters/with stamps and Presidential Gold Coins,
all through the postal society.

Also have done some stamp collecting.
