Default Checking in from Southern RI (yes we may be only 30 miles wide but we have southern and northern parts, darnit.)

I think I got the least of the storm here. I know I have over a foot of snow. Friends and family in CT and MA are reporting over 3 feet of snow. Widespread power outages too. I imagine we won't hear from some people for a while.

Rhode Island has this weird snow belt where half the state gets something completely different than the other half of the state. Friends a mere 25 miles away from me have twice the snow that I do. I lucked out this time. (Don't worry, I won't press my luck in future disasters.)

Right now I can't open my back door to look outside because the snow drifts have blown a mound in front of the door. I do see many tree limbs down from the wind and the weight of the wet snow. And I can see tree branches falling into my pool. That should be interesting to clean up.

People criticized the governors of CT, MA and RI for their driving bans on the major highways, especially when these bans included big fines and possible jail time for people out on the roads without legitimate reasons. But the message was really to get businesses to let people work at home or go home early before the brunt of the storm hit.

It's sad that they had to go to such extremes to express what should be common sense- stay at home and wait the storm out. Some states declared states of emergency, some didn't. The difference is that for a lot of people, their jobs won't let them go early or not come in unless an emergency is declared. Meanwhile in part of NY, especially in Long Island, the news is reporting that plows can't get through because people had to abandon their cars on the highway. Maine had a 19 car pileup on I-295.

The other wild thing was the thundersnow... lots of big, bright green blasts of lightening.

The concern tonight is more hurricane force winds, possibly taking down more trees, and thus power lines with them. In the past two years we've had so many bad storms take down trees and tree limbs.

I'd still take a blizzard over a tornado anyway.

Default Cape Cod check in

Was a wild night! The snow is still falling and not expected to clear out of here until after midnight.

Doesnt look like there is much snow out there. Maybe 8-12 inches so far. I am presuming the backhoe they are using to keep the parking lot clear is either to avoid blowing a transmission pushing heavy wet snow with a regular plow and/or because the configuration of the area makes piling snow an impossibility. Looks like they are actually moving the snow to someplace else.

The power is currently on. Was going on and off with such regularity during the night it was making me think some assholes at the electric company were playing with one of those clap on/clap off things.

90% of the Cape is without power. Have no clue why this side of the road still has power but am thankful for it. Windchill is 0 at the moment.

Winds are down to the more managable and less worrisome range - sustained up to 40, gusts to 60 mph range. Trees seem to be holding their own so far which is just freakin amazing.

Road I can see is snow covered but passable. Cant use salt on the roads here because of the water table. The salt sub doesnt work quite as well in these temps.

Number 1 brother from northern RI is reporting 2 feet and still snowing. Cant reach bro number 2. Have yet to be able to reach my Mom in the middle of RI. Had her charge her cell and spent a half hour going over just press the green button. Write it down. Green button. Even practiced answering calls with the green button.

Hope everyone is safe out there.

We definitely didn't get as much as the northeastern states, but South Jersey did get a decent amount of accumulation. TV said our town got 1.9 inches, but um, no. There was at least 4-5 inches out there and more in some areas due to wind drifts.

I'm almost jealous of the areas that got 3 feet - I'm such a snow bunny and I don't mind shoveling - but then again, after reading what some are going through - maybe I'm not so jealous.

Please stay safe and warm and please heed warnings about staying indoors. I heard that there are cars stuck out on the LI Expressway since yesterday because they failed to listen to state of emergency orders. Granted, no one ever takes those seriously, but in this case, I guess they should have.

Hope everyone is safe out there.

I begged Pete to make sure that her mother's cell phone was plugged in, in case she lost power, but

Pete's mother does not know how to use her cell phone, not at all.

There have been times when we haven't been able to reach her, for one cockamamie reason or another. It is infuriating.

She thinks I'm sweet because I am concerned, but

It's Pete I am concerned about, and her worries and fears.
