I was reading this thread last night and I was reminded of the Dutch version of a hotdog that I was "treated" to last year while visiting the Netherlands.
I give you, the frikandel: ![]() The Dutch, not really known for their cuisine, well, except they do have outstanding cheeses and breads, consider this their version of a "hot dog." It is a deep-fried long, thin (and I might add nasty) sausage, of which one of the ingredients is horse meat. Yes, horse meat. And please note the Dutchies love their fries (or frietjes) with a mayo-based sauce that has a slight pickle-like taste to it. If you ask for ketchup with them, they know right away you are an American. After experiencing it, but avoiding another Dutch "delicacy" - raw herring -- I took my Dutch girlfriend to the Ikea in her city, where we had American-style hot dogs. Even she noted they were a distinct improvement. And don't even get me started on that other favorite Dutch treat -- bitterballen. You can even order them at the McDonald's over there. lol Jake |

mayo with a little mustard and ketchup. every now and then a bit of dill relish. i don't eat hot dogs very often so i tend to always eat the same thing on them. sometimes if i'm at a restaurant with special toppings i'll add cheese and maybe sauteed shrooms or onions. i want to branch out and try weird things but i'm a pansy when it comes to hot dogs (or burgers)...i like what i like and i tend to stick to that cause i'm always craving it.
i also prefer hebrew national because that way i know it doesn't have pork. ![]() |

OK, where to start. Out here we have hot dogs and we have wieners... and yes they are indeed different.
A hot dog: it's about 6" long....made of beef we often find them at ball games, throw one on the grill during a summer cookout etc. Served on either a steamed, grilled, or right out of the bag bun. For me during such days Ketchup is a must and sometimes onions. A Wiener: it's about 5" long.... made of veal and pork placed in a steamed bun, then topped with a meat sauce seasoned with a myriad of spices like cumin, paprika, chili powder and allspice, which is itself covered in finely chopped onions, celery salt and yellow mustard |

I watched a show on the Food Network once a few years ago..and on one of the Hawaiian Islands, is a place called "Puka Dogs"...and NOW I want to go and have some so badly. I believe if you google them, you will find out about them.
Basically they place a bun on one end, on a pointed,, sharp spike, that toasts it..then slide a wiener inside and fill with so many differing condiments..one is like coconut sauce, and so many other exotic ones...yummmmmI WANT ONE! NOW!!!!

Nick's Coney Island Hot Dogs
![]() mustard, onion, coney island sauce I miss these. A lot. Next time I'm anywhere near Boston or Cape Cod I will make sure I visit Fall River, MA. Home of the best food in the world. Coney island hot dogs are just the tip of the iceberg. Hartley's pork pies, chow mein sandwiches, Chourico or linguica pizza, actually chourico or linguica anything, malassadas...I guess I'm hungry. For junk food apparently. |

Oh My Mr. Day! You actually got me to thinking and I like them more than one way...depends on the day.
Sometimes I make them with ketchup and lots of raw sweet onions. Other times I do them with hot mustard from McDonald's Still yet there are kraut dog days with mustard And lastly, there is the days that I want chili cheese mustard and a ton of raw sweet onions. Like I said just depends on the day...Haahaa! Day---day. Ok. I crack myself up! |

When at home (it's a staple for the "fend for yourself" dinner) I have 2 Oscar Mayer beef hot dogs, first boiled a little to heat, then pan seared ('cause boiled hot dogs are just nasty), split in half length-wise, put a slice of american cheese and let it melt. Served on toast (just regular bread, I don't use hotdog buns 'cause they're a luxury), slather BOTH sides with plenty of ketchup. (It's actually the only thing I eat ketchup on, but will not eat a hot dog if it doesn't have ketchup.)
Out in public, I love them all kinds of ways. |
