Starred Up.
Incredible. Really intense, gripping, real to life. Starred up is the term used in the UK for young offenders that get moved up to adult prison early. It's a UK prison drama and very well done. well acted and very real plot. the violence is not gratuitous and it's not a moral fairy tale like so many hollywood flicks are. That gets on my nerves sometimes. It's just a raw and honest story written by a man who worked in the UK prisons as a volunteer therapist. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star...h=starred%20up you can find the trailer there as well. I love rottentomatoes as a review site, btw, my personal tastes usually run along par with the group reviews done. Sometimes there is a huge discrepancy between reviewers and audience grading - which is interesting... I tend to follow that rather than netflix (some incredibly good movies on netflix that won tons of international film festival accolades get 2/3 stars and some of the SHITTEST things I've seen gets 4.5 stars) or imbd. Better descriptions, better reviews. |

Saw "The Imitation Game". Liked it very much though I wish they'd spent more time on the "innards" of how they cracked the code and, also, more about how he was hounded into suicide by homophobia.

I just re-watched 'Soldiers girl' I hadn't seen it since it came out a dozen years ago in 2003.
So glad that our military can serve openly now. |

A Prophet 2009
From Netflix "After refusing to snitch, 18-year-old Arab Malik (Tahar Rahim) is thrown into a French prison, where the Corsican mafia rules with a firm fist. The obedient newcomer slowly rises through the organization's ranks but soon begins to double-cross his superiors." At 2.5 hrs I thought it could have done well in 2.0, but given the number of awards it got I seem to be in the minority. I enjoyed it and would watch it again. Apparently there is a remake afoot, I'll bet it's american and I'll bet they screw it up, watch this french version. |

I'm hoping to see more "hard" science fiction.
Interstellar is being attempted to be sold as such but it's not. It's full of pseudoscience - I can enjoy things for being fun, but very irritated when it's being hoisted as something it's not. |

Burlesque [2010]
Fabulous for watching scantily clad girls dancing. I think Cher's lips get a credit for having a life of their own. Even the Aguilera girl isn't too bad until she tries to be sexy...or sing!

Over the holidays, I watched a couple of films:
North by Northwest (1959) and Donnie Darko (2001).
