I love my kindle for reading and I'm not tempted by the ipad or the nook colour or the *new* kindle fire because one of the primary reasons I love my kindle is that it is NOT back lit, which means I can read longer without eye strain.

As to carrying everything, I would say it would be very rare would I carry my smart phone, my laptop and my kindle with me. It would be a duplication of utility and it would be rather laborious and bulky and (to me) defeat one of the main purposes of the kindle - it is small, light, easily portable and stores 1000s of books.

I think Dee was pointing out that the kindle is not really the best device if you want to be able to surf the internet. If you want an e-reader that has internet surfing capacity you're probably better looking at the ipad or the new kindle fire.

My smart phone functions as a mini-laptop when I'm on the run; so unless I am traveling for business or traveling for an extended period of time - I would be unlikely to carry my laptop with me. I can easily order books for my kindle on my phone (with the amazon app) and they are sent wirelessly from my amazon account to my kindle.

Hi Sparkle.....Thank you for the response. Dee and I have a history. She very patiently will explain this stuff to me, just as you have. I greatly appreciate it when that happens. Especially the great examples. It took me forever to get to the IPHONE. Also, I have Photophobia, big word for inability to tolerate lights and patterns, and I knew this about the kindle (and am glad you reiterated it, so I didn't get lost in all the techy stuff)

Any thoughts on the new version of the IPAD introduced yesterday (not an Ipad, the competition)? And thanks again!

Course there's always new technology round the corner, it's called technological progress. It just so happened that I knew the new Kindles were due so waited a couple of months...I'm glad I waited. I'm not going for the rather more expensive Kindle Fire (I'd have an iPad if I could afford a tablet) but the cheaper Kindle touch 4gb with the same sort of screen as the old one but is smaller and lighter.

Those of you who have your kindles will continue to be happy with them, I suspect I shall be very happy with the new Kindle touch.

Can't see me carrying my iPod, phone, laptop and a kindle. One makes decisions upon what technology to take out and about dependant on the day. For me personally, I'm more liable to leave my phone and laptop at home.

I used to carry my laptop (for work, have to have it), my smartphone, plus a whole load of books with me on trips - that's a lot of weight and luggage space. Then I would usually buy more books at the airport on the flight home, or worry about finishing a book on the plane long before the flight ended (hey, I travel a lot, long flights, lots of long evenings I can luxuriate in reading!)

Now, I still carry my laptop and phone - but I also carry a whole warehouse full of books with me on that little skinny Kindle. doesn't even take a sliver more of extra space in my luggage! I love my Kindle, love shopping for new books on it with the whispernet, love pulling it out and knowing everything I want to read (plus other things I hadn't thought of but will find while browsing) will be right there at my fingertips.

I'm kind of torn about the Fire because the e-ink is so easy on the eyes on my old kindle. But I'm intrigued by the other functions.

I was looking at the Fire this morning, and I don't think I would get one. It's got no chance of competing with the iPad, and I'm always dubious of new browsers. The Fire-only browser is almost guaranteed to suck. The only reason I can see to get one is if I read a *lot* more magazines than I do (and a lot fewer books), or if I wanted to make my cookbook collection digital. I would say it would be good for children, since children's books would look a lot better on it, but it seems like a bad idea to buy delicate electronics for kids.

I took a peek at the new kindles. They look awesome, and Goof already has his eye on one.

I don't like to use my Ipad as an ereader, the screen is too "screeny." I really like the kindle screen.

I took my kindle to the beach in bright sunlight and had no problem reading all day. No glare. I can't do that with my Ipad. But fuz likes the ipad for reading books with pictures/interactive books.

Pup, there is one of the new kindles that's touch and has the same screen type as ours.

For me, any kind of technology is user-based. I use my ipad for certain things like Angry Birds and Smurfs . I use my kindle for reading. I use my laptop for everything else. I don't have a smart phone because I only use my phone for texting and calling. Others use their smartphones for everything. Whether or not I get the new fancy thing is generally based on whether or not I'll USE the new fancy thing. If it just repeats stuff I already have, without improvement, I don't bother with it.

And sometimes I laugh at myself making a grocery list on my ipad instead of just pulling out a pen and paper.

Sheesh.

Question:

Has anyone used their E-reader (regardless of brand) for text books? I bought one with the hopes that it would be simpler and more ready for me to read, but I still find myself needing the hard copy to underline and highlight (yes I have tried using that technique with in the reader it is just not as conducive to page flipping to find the source).

What are your experiences? If any with text books?

hp
I don't have a kindle (yet *cough*) but blush does. I thought about buying an e-textbook or two and pilfering her kindle. It would be nice to be able to take all of my books to class and not break my back, but I'm a big fan of hard copy textbooks and highlighting and stuff too. Especially with my calculus classes.

The deciding factor for me, though, is the inability to sell it once I'm done with it. Even if I have to shell out 100 bucks initially for that book in hard copy, chances are good that I'll be able to sell it back for pretty close to that. If I spend 50 bucks on an e-book, then I've just spent 50 bucks with no way get any of that back.

I love the kindle for other books, though. Textbooks on 'em just aren't for me. At least for now.

I consider the same thing when buying e-textbooks. This semester, I was able to find one of my textbooks in a Kindle edition on Amazon for less than the bookstore was selling used copies for, and it only cost me $9.99. Another book was also available for Kindle, but less than the bookstore price was still over $100. If I buy directly from the campus bookstore, I also have the option of charging my books to my financial aid. I can spend $10 on a book that I won't be able to sell back, but over $100 isn't happening.

I love my kindle for reading and I am not interested in the ipad for reading, or the new kindle fire because they are back lit and would put more strain in my eyes, and I can certainly live without that.

I use my iPhone as my everyday on the go computer, even though I have a laptop and it works just fine for me. My laptop is mainly used around the house because it is convenient to be able to use it anywhere I wish.

I am not a student so I cannot comment on the advantages or disadvantages of using a kindle to purchase your school text books, but I can say that I am extremely happy using my kindle for leisure reading.

Thought I would revive this thread...

I purchased a Kindle Fire today after talking to some people and reading a ton of reviews (was highly considering the Nook tablet). Hope to get it before the holidays. Would have liked to try it out before I purchased it, but is not possible around here. I know it's not an iPad so I do not have unrealistic expectations about it.

Main reason I bought it, I can't get any books around here (including the library), would have to order them all online and the mail takes forever. The closest bookstore is 2+ hours away. Along with magazines, basic web browsing and the potential for watching movies (not sure how much I would do that).

Anyone have the Amazon Prime account and use the lending library? Do you think it is worth the $79/year?

Thanks

Kindles are amazing. I think you find more opportunities to read and not having to lug around a book with you..has to be very valuable and it is greener..
I've definitely considered it from time to time however, there are advantages to books that a Kindle will never match. Someday, (and I may never live to see it) somebody is going to turn the world upside down by sending an electronic shock wave thru our atmosphere and burn all the wonderful electronic devises we have created.. ) hopefully that is all they will be able to achieve because I believe we can live quite well without these .. but it will change life for most of us (still living) Life will become much simpler..and having a book (although considered quaint by that time) will no doubt provide some very useful information..So while I love the idea of Kindle I still love (more) the feel of a real book in my hand

I have the amazon prime and think it is one of the best uses for my 79 bucks in a long time. Not only have I gotten all free 2 day shipping this Christmas season but the lending library and free movie database is excellent for both my Kindle Fire and my roku/internet capable flat screens.

Yes, my 79 membership has paid off in a multitude of ways. I got invited to be an Amazon Vine voice (I already reviewed a lot) which I think was tipped by my Prime membership. Just shipped all my holiday gifts for free and got percentages off of all of them.

I also have borrowed two books to date. The last George R.R. Donaldson (which I got right away instead of having to wait for three months...I actually got that from my local library which has a Kindle lending service now) and Like Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.

I love my kindle!!!! I can't put it down, I make myself dizzy with all the selections. And hours slip away . So I have decided, I will only read 1 book at a time, and only when I'm in bed or there is nothing else going on, like a rainy Sunday afternoon and all my projects are finished and chores completed! No exceptions!

I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas this year (thanks honey!!) and I am LOVING it!! I didn't think I would like the Kindle when it first came out (being something of a book snob ) but I find myself fascinated with it! And, it's going to help with space...I have hundreds of books that I can't bear to part with, and yet I know it's not practical to move them all into the new house...Kindle to the rescue!!
