Default Summer Veggie Garden Time!

Anyone planting for the summer? Ready Set Go! Share what you are planting and the unique climate you live in!

I just put in three tomatoes and 1 lemon cucumber. The downside of being in Sacramento for the summer is the limited garden space and by limited I mean 8'x8' of patio space that is heavily shaded. I usurped the driveway for the tomatoes and cucumber. I need to find space for basil!

I've also left instructions at home in Hawaii to start getting our veggie patch there in order. When I get back I can plant lettuces in hanging planters off my lanai, more pumpkins and figure out what the hell else of my favorite plants grow in Hawaii aside from orchids and not roses. Hawaii has complicated growing conditions for most of the things I love most so we'll see how that goes.

Your turn!

I have planted all kinds of vegetables/salad from seed, which are all coming up nicely, already had radishes and roquet, strawberries getting riper, i have a lot of fruit too and a big herb garden. I like to grow my own food as much as i can, only problem is i also like to go away a lot and the person i leave to water my plants tends to let em die so its difficult and theres a hosepipe ban in England due to lack of water available, despite the floods weve had in the last couple of months.

My family gardens every year! I come from a long line of farmers..I just think my green thumb got lost somewhere...lol! My parents plant tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelon, squash and various varietys of peppers as well. They have a lot of know how to make it work.

Kansas can be a hard climate/enviornment to grow in because of the weather changes. With a little knowledge though you can do well.

This is my first year in my own home and I had been toying with the idea of a full on garden because I have a fantastic yard for it. My issue is the little varments that have homes in the back. IE all of the crazy bunnies! I didnt want to put up fencing because I am lazy so I was researching other ways to go about it.

Some tips that I found, the one that was most interesting to me was the suggestion of planting a double row of green onions around the entire garden, which will keep bunnies away. Supposedly because they dont like green onions. Another interesting suggestion was to put dog hair all around the garden to scare the bunnies away, but quite frankly that just sounds gross.

My final decision was container gardening. Small scale and then next year with some planning I hope to have a nice size garden. This year however, I am growing a couple of different varieties of tomatoes, including cherry tomatoes. I chose some big decorative pots that I am keeping on my back patio. I also have done various planters and hanging baskets of pretty colorful flowers to spruce up my house. So far the tomatoes look like they are going well. I have been taking pictures of my progress and will post them here as the summer goes on.

What a great idea for a thread pink! thank you!

As a side note if all of these tomatoes come out the way they are supposed to I am going to have to do a lot of salsa/canning so if yall want some you should call dibs soon

Hi Jaques!

Can you set up drip lines on timers? I've done those before and for fairly cheap then your human only has to make sure things aren't dying. It also conserves energy. I had no idea there were water bans happening in England!

For anyone worried about the cost of container gardening check out the molded paper pots. According to a friend who is an expert gardener they last for several years and the larger sizes run about $10 each. I just put my tomatoes in them.

You can also build raised beds using cinder blocks and do most of the fill with dirt putting the good soil at the top. I think my friends told me it was about a $30 endeavor and saved her knees a lot of bending.

Gardening doesn't have to break the bank. In fact I have friends who plant massive amounts of basil because they can make pesto dinners for their large family for about $5.

Pete is building me a container garden for vegetables.

She works at a locally owned hardware store so

The supplies will be inexpensive and

The weeding will be so much easier.

I have been in my house for almost five years and

It has taken me time to plant the perennials I want.

Some of my flowers are ready to separate which is very exciting!

I have a small raised bed container garden and just had a lady friend weld some garden art for me too. I have a small sampling of garden veggies (carrots, tiny tomatoes, nasturtium’s, rosemary and basil). My latest garden art subs for a fresh water birdbath. It looks a lot like this picture I found on the web.

No garden yet expect one more frost here in the Carolinas. Planting will be tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, squash and zucchini and who knows what else

It will be an interesting year with moving in the spring. I'm planning a trellis with mini cucumbers I grew last year that were amazing, and some sugar snaps and green beans. Fresh herbs for sure. And probably some container gardening from there. Lettuce and cherry tomatoes. Next year will be bigger and better.

It's getting ready!!

The box is made. Landscaping cloth is on the bottom. A layer of mulch was first. Eight bags of really good veggie garden soil, mixed with some peat moss.(Best Butch did all that) I've started a compost.

Now it's up to me to start these seeds and keep the squirrels away.

The joke is...we better have some good groceries growing!!!
