Aw, come on. Come onnnnn! Everyone has a karaoke story, whether they were singing, their friends were up there or some dude mooned the audience during a rousing rendition of Brown Eyed Girl (I am dead serious. That happened.)
I met my butch at karaoke a long time ago. We were friends all this time because I never thought of "us" that way. Hy was patient, bode his time and swept me off my feet when the situation was gauged right. It was right. ![]() My karaoke shame story: One night a regular karaoke night denizen came in loaded (with cash) for bear. He bought everyone round after round of shots until we could barely see, let alone sing. I remember being on a bar stool on the dance floor, trying desperately to sing Jewel's "Foolish Games" and not burp, and started leaning sideways off the stool... only to be rescued by a butch friend who gently propped me back up. I couldn't do it anymore. These old bones... ![]() What's your best karaoke story? |

the last time I karaoked was last summer. We went to this little redneck bar that my best friends ex-aunt in law owned. I had a few beers (ok...several) and was easily coaxed to sing. I then lied and told the dj I had never done such a thing before and was nervous. (I grew up singing in front of people and have no stage fright :P) He announced that I was a karaoke virgin and suddenly all eyes were on me. I can't recall the song I sang but I ended it with the "super star" pose of Mary Katherine Gallagher fame. We ended up doing lots of songs and I obnoxiously encouraged the audience to participate. It was loads of fun.

Karaoke is (or was) the traditional ending to almost every banquet, dinner out, or gathering in China. The other teachers and I didn't drink when we were there, but I saw how things loosened up after one or many bottles of Qingdao beer. It was an educational experience.
For some reason, the Carpenters are very popular there, and so most of the karaoke involved their songs. I duly got up and sang "Yesterday Once More", which thankfully I already knew the words to and it's a song without great changes in key and range. My students were satisfied, even impressed. Maybe it's a rite of passage.
