We Bought The Farm......
Farmers worked mortgaged land their entire lives, but could only "buy" it when they died and their insurance paid out. It wasn't neccesarily a demeaning term either. For a poor family farmer working hard to make ends meet, having the mortgage paid off often meant comparative wealth and good-times for their surviving family members. Saying someone bought the farm was a somewhat respectful way of acknowledging that their death had permitted their widow and childen to become landowners (from, Snopes).

What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander...
What is good for one person ought to be good enough for anyone else.Unless you've got serious allergies, then this most likely won't work out (I have allergies to lots of things that seem to work for geese, but not me *lol* )
When the going gets tough, the tough get going............
Often, when things become difficult, people who seem weak find the strength somehow to keep going! You become tough in hard times. I can't think of the song, but there's a song with this exact line of thought! Do you by chance know which song I'm thinking of, homoe?

Now see in the mid-west we'd say gallivanting to indicate going around from one place to another in the pursuit of pleasure or entertainment.

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzche coined the phrase "What does not kill me makes me stronger.
BUT being strong (er) is relative: Some people are strong because they exercise their muscles, whole others are strong because they exercise their 'faith' on either spiritual or personal practical ways.
Therefore: IF a person survives a potential life threatening situation, people generally believe the experience leaves them stronger.
Hence, saying that one can Bench press a Buick is often synonymous to overcoming traumatic life's issues by one's own ability to be 'strong'.

"The hog killing would come in December, when the air was cold and the bacteria dead. Every year a hog was shot in the head, dipped in boiling water, and hung from a tree next to the tool shed, then gutted and butchered into a thousand pieces. What goes around comes around
An idiom designed to communicate an nearly universal idea about the Law of Reciprocity. Some people believe it expresses ideas about Karma. To me, it signifies a circular process. Sometimes it's a good thing to interrupt circular processes or circular thinking processes.
Reciprocity, which is completely different (to me) than circular thinking, only works when people are willing to reciprocate any given x y or z type of way.
For what it's worth, I don't personally like Karmic thinking or circular process of thought because more often than naught, it's a pejorative process. I'd much rather be straight up honest in unvarnished ways.
