View Full Version : You Know That Saying ... (T/F?)

"Red sky in morning, sailor take warning;
Red sky at night, sailor's delight," ~ Sailor's Proverb.
For the most part, I think this saying is true. But I've seen some awesome sunrise's in startling shades of pinks or reds, yet the day remains exceptionally beautiful. I think what the saying infers is that we remain aware of our surroundings. I think an added caveat would be that anything is possible, so enjoy life, be cognizant of our present state of mind, and cherish our delights.
-------------------------------------.
New fun & fluff game:
A) List an colloquial saying; and then,
B) state whether you think it's true or false and then state why you think it's true or false.
C) Have fun, enjoy! : )

"If a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his ass hoppin'."
VERDICT: FALSE. Wings are used for flying, not hopping. If the frog's ass bumped before he got wings, it will also bump after. Some frogs may have sad bony little asses that never got bumped, but some individuals (I'm looking at you, Kardashian frogs) may find that their asses bump no matter what they do. Your mileage may vary

I think it's so true..........now if the man was hungry before he learned how to fish, I'd still give him one.
Sidebar: In this country of wealth I think it's criminal to have our citizens eating out of garbage cans! I had a neighbor back in Milwaukee (a retired gentleman) who must of lived on a very small stipend from either SS or his pension! Often he would make the rounds in the mall where I worked checking for discarded food. It would break my heart to see this.

It may be true, but if a person doesn't have the looks, they don't get courted either.
I think there's a whole bunch of people who believe this to be true, Sweet Bliss.
In my own experience, I've not always been beautiful. And, there are times I doubt my own overall sense of whether I am beautiful or not. As a young girl, I can tell you that I was no physical female specimen of beauty. I thought I was rather ugly and I've pictures of proof. As I have aged, I've come to terms with whether or not I feel I meet any level of beauty. All I've got is a gigantic work of doodling art, on my own mind, about being the proverbial flower who blooms in beauty in her own time.
I will also say that most anyone I've ever been romantically involved with felt that they were ugly...not good looking....or desirable.... in terms of physical appearance.
Bit most often I felt attracted to their physical "beauty".
So, in my mind, it's fairly accurate that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that in most cases, "beauty is (and can be) more than skin deep."

Once in a Blue Moon..... :moonstars:
I like this expression because it's true that "Blue Moon's" don't happen all that often. Maybe once a year? One time, in a recent calendar year, there were two occasions of an "Blue Moon."
So, if one uses this particular expression and you know that the person rarely does x, y or z and they use this particular way of describing their situation, then I think it's reasonable to believe that it was truly an 'Once in a Blue Moon' experience.

This particular social idiom basically implies that two people agree with each other.
Or....in some cases, it could literally mean you that each person sees each other at eye level, an indication that both parties are matched in height or its possible that both parties just shared an amazing moment together and they're looking into each other's eyes (...).

.......Go Fly A Kite.......
The idiomatic expression above is not often used in current culture, but it is an interesting way of telling someone to stop annoying you (I saw your post homoe, in another forum thread).
What some people might not know is that this idiomatic expression first appears in an book authored by Arthur Henry, titled "The Unwritten Law," which was published in 1905. According to an unknown reader on another website devoted to explaining the back story on idioms, I learned that this idiom was generally understood in early 1900s American society and was used frequently by the early 1930s. Then, I'm guessing that WWII came along and the idiom wasn't used much at all, until it's found again in popular culture again during the 1970s. No explanation was given for the uptick in use, but I am guessing that the comic strip by Charles Schultz -- Peanuts, may have played in the resurgence of this idiom. Remember how Lucy would tell Charlie Brown to 'Go Fly a Kite'??? Then you'd see the kite tangled up in a tree or Charlie tangled up in the kite??? I think the comic strip might have been partially responsible for the reappearance of this social idiom.
In other news: :eyebat:
I love Kite Festivals. I used to take my son's to parks or the beach to go fly kites. Flying a kite is not for the feint of heart. It's takes patience, timing, the right kind of windy weather and your kite must be kite-proper, *lol*.
Both my son's were gone during the calender year of 2006. My youngest son was training for a job in Astoria. My oldest son was in the service, over in Iraq. I was in my junior year at SOU. There was no one around to go with me, so I drove up to Lincoln City for the Kite Festival. Here's a video of that day, where a man flew three kites (Carl Briegel aka The Kite God). The song for the kite performance was a Hawaiian love song, sung by Iz. *enjoy* :)

.......On a Wing and a Prayer.......
The above social expression finds it roots as an English proverb, born out of an WWII film, starring John Wayne, called The Flying Tigers. (1942, Black and White war propoganda film).
In the film, pilots of planes, nearly on their proverbial last breath, would say that they hoped they could make it back, "on a wing and a prayer."
Sometimes, people will say this phrase when saying goodbye to someone they love and care about too...... "I'll let you fly on a wing and a prayer" ..... which i think is a very very sweet way to say goodbye....... :stillheart:
