Pride Goeth Before The Fall
This idiom is an adaptation from a well known source, The King James Version (KJV) of The Bible.
What this saying means is that people who are over-confident or arrogant are most likely to fall from.social grace.
BUT, because this saying is adapted from the Proverbs 16: 18-19, here is the entire correct version of this particular biblical scripture:
"VERSE 18: Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. VERSE 19: Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud." --- Proverbs 16: 18-19.
I can think of many people over my life time, people of celebrity status or just every day ordinary people, who've been power hungry, arrogant, mean-hearted or mean-spirited, and so over-confident, that you hear their pride like nails screeching across a chalkboard. These are the types of troubled personalities that this proverb describes.

It's a Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1971)
This idiomatic phrase finds its roots, sunk deeply into the ground and within the lyrics of a very popular soul song, covered by The Pretenders, Annie Lennox and H Town; but was first recorded and written by members of the soul group called The Persuaders.
The idiom meaning succinctly articulates a particular truth about two emotions (Love and Hate). It's hard to tell if there's really any difference between the two outcomes either emotion is capable of producing. It's obvious to most people where the line is drawn. But, I consider this expression to be mostly true. And, as well, I like very much the song and the idiomatic turn of phrase.

You know, late last night, it came to me that my late grandmother always wore hush puppy shoes for her role at work as an head dietician. Back in the day, I'd say it was early 1960s, no shoe retailer made shoes for women to wear that felt comfortable for women....especially women who were on their feet all day long. Even early models of nursing shoes were not comfortable at all...because it was nearly 1973 before my mother could find a comfortable shoes to wear. Both my mother and her mother worked long hours on their feet in both their roles as an dietician and nurse. So, even I couldn't find shoes comfortable enough to wear in all the years I worked in my former career, but I could never ever find a pair of hush puppies that would fit my feet. I'm tall, my feet are sort of long, but not too wide... I'm a "B" or "C" width. Mom and grandmother had fairly little feet, which worked perfectly for them to buy a pair or three of hush puppies. :eyebat:
Thanks for jogging my memory, homoe :balloon:

I love discovering the origin of phrases we use today with absolutely no idea of why they came about.
"Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." always intrigued me since I could attribute that to nothing within my own experience or anything I'd read.
I love Lucy Worsley (check her out on YouTube) because I get answers on things like this.
When baths were a weekly thing, the order of bathing was father, mother, eldest child down to youngest child. They were all bathing in the same water, so by the time it was the baby's turn the water might well have been dark enough that you could throw the bathwater out not having seen the baby was still in it.
Anyone else grateful for modern plumbing?

Again, Lucy Worsley.
"They don't have a pot to piss in." Contextually, I understood this to mean someone was poor (I was about to say dirt poor, but I'm not sure of the origin of that. Something I'll have to look up.)
Centuries ago, one way of earning money was to collect the urine from the household chamber pots or whatever they were called at the time. If you didn't have a pot to collect the urine in to sell for a source of income, you didn't have a pot to piss in.
I love weird stuff like this.

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
This phrase is not exactly an idiom but it's an often used strand of thought which traces it's roots back to early 1900s use, right before the Great Depression, and was also used during the days of WW2.... It's been resurrected again in popular culture via the country western artist Aaron Tippin.

I did a bit more of a search on this and came up with the correct time for which this happened: Ancient Egyptian Papri from Elephantine, an island off the coast of Egypt, inhabited by Jews, Syrians and Egpytians, was back in the 5th century before Christ (BCE).
Here is a set of background information to read, in order of appearance, for those interested. Check out the page about Proverbs of Ahiqar first, then all others in order as listed:

"The whole kit and caboodle"..........
A collection of things.
Sidebar: This expression is a redundancy, for kit has meant "a collection or group" since the mid-1700s though this meaning survives only in the full idiom today, and caboodle has been used with the same meaning since the 1840s. In fact caboodle is thought to be a corruption of the phrase kit and boodle, another redundant phrase, since boodle also meant "a collection."
Regardless I rather enjoy this idiom!

The best thing since sliced bread
Otto Rohwedder devised a machine to.sluce bread, back in 1928, which revolutionized the way bread was wrapped and marketed as an service product of convenience. And because of this turn of events, which was an welcome feat of convenience in modern inventions of the early 20th century, people coined the phrase to carry broader meaning for depth and appreciation for ease of consumption or ease of delivery which soon became an catch-phrase to describe ease and enjoyment of quality relationships.
