Yes, what a break. I hope he recovers well, too- but it looks like this could impact his play forever. He seems like a smart kid, though. And all those guys have to think about life after baseball- but he is only in his second year.
He is really missed!
Saw the video of the collision that caused Buster Posey to break his leg. Looked awful -- and with a little too much intent. MLB really needs to establish a guideline with homeplate slides.

I agree. Posey refused to make negative comments about it but there has been quite a few comments about it being intentional. I hope not. Yup- might be a good idea for MLB to take a look at this in terms of guidelines. They came up with some concerning pitchers hitting batters after some obvious intentional throws.
Sometimes I think about the 5 pro players get (all sports) and I think yikes- but injuries can halt a career very early for some and this is how they make a living. Plus it isn't a career that one can do for 30-40 years like others.
Is it possible to change "your" team? Yes it is. Thats what trades are for. :)
Would you change "your" team for a partner? I would trade my partner for the good of the team :)
What if "your" team and your partner's team are diametrically opposed??? Obviously, my partner would need to compromise. LOL
What if "your" team sucks and your partner's is always in the headlines...in a good way? I am a Red Sox fan. Win or lose, they are always in the headlines. Partner would adjust.

My answer would be No.
6 years from now, when they finally show up in the majors, if they haven't been traded like cattle, I won't know who they are, so I never bother.
The Pirates (pity them) want so baddly to be taken seriously as baseball owners and not newspaper heirs, have been spamming all of us with draft information.
OK, so we Drafted first (that also means we were the worst team in baseball last year) and we selected Gerrit Cole out of UCLA and he comes to us with 3 pitches!:hangloose:......FAKE BOOK (not a typing error) wanted them to pick a bat. Now everyone is bashing the owners (yawn) again.:byebye:

Whoa! What a game between the Giants and the Nationals. We game back after the 7th to tie it at 4 to 4. Finally, in the 13th, the Giants came through!!
Timmy didn't pitch that well overall, but, hit his 1000th strike-out during his first 5 years!! F***K Yeah!!! But, I am very impressed with Vogelsong. He not only pitches- he hits well and is pretty fast!

Saw my first giants game in CA in 1958 when I was 7 years old- been a long haul to see them doing so well and taking the WS for 2010. Hum Baby!!

Hum Baby!!My Dad used to take me to Sunday afternoon baseball games when I two and wearing diapers. My mother wouldn't let him go unless he took me. It became a ritual, Me and the old man and those Sunday double headers. Baseball was such a way of life for me, all of my life. I love the Pirates, win or loose. (we haven't done alot of winning in 18 years) but I support them BIG TIME. I still listen to games on the radio too, him and I did alot of that.

Glad you love baseball Atlast!
Some nice stories out of the draft including 2 teams who picked players who sustained spinal cord injuries - one playing the game and the other in a recreational accident. They may never play pro ball or walk again but the pro teams honored the potential they saw in these 2 young men by selecting them.
Nice job Rangers and Astros.

How are the Red Sox doing? I like them in the American league. I only get a few of their games on the level of TV channels I get. Yeah...I signed-up for the package that the Giant games are in... well, my older sister gave me this package as a gift. But it isn't the mega- game MLB super-duper package that covers all of the MLB. She knows i have days that I am not very mobile and love baseball and the Giants! A very loving gift from her, actually.

Thanks for posting that warm and fuzzy link Kobi. I didn't know the draft went that deep. I especially like the part about a coach's daughter, who was an outstanding softball player getting a draft selection too. How come you never hear about these things?
It restores my faith in mankind.
The New York Met's are coming to town for a four game series. This is big. My Bucco's are hot at the dish too. Hard to believe we are at .500......:goodluck: I'm loving every second of it.
The Red Sox are doing well at the moment. With last night victory,
they took over first place in the division. Tough division tho with
lots of very talented teams.

Heck yeah! I have a very dear friend who's husband loves baseball as much as I do. He tapes games for me, (any game will do, I'm not picky) and I watch them when I need some down time. I also watch them through the winter. Yes, I miss baseball that baddly, that I will watch old games. (as long as I haven't watched the game, its not old to me)

Pittsburgh Vs. The new York Mets. The bucco's won fair and square last night 3 to 2. It was completely sold out. Even standing room only was sold out. The largest crowd in ten years! YES!!!
We have lost both of our catchers to injury, and have an untested minor leaguer playing every day. Our minor leaguer who was ready for call up, also was buried at the plate and out on injury. So, the team has to over come this hurdle. Two more home games with the Mets as the Pirates continue to play 500 ball. (sorry, but we haven't had that in 18 years)
I see lots of people wearing Pirate gear, last season they dogged you if you wore any garb! Let's go Buc's.
I dont know about Pittsburg hitters but their pitchers are looking good. Have both Correia and Morton on my fantasy team.
Mets arent looking as bad as last year. Less injuries have helped. The owner calling them a bunch of overpaid primadonna types might have spurred them a bit. Tho tough love in baseball can come back to bite you in the bum.

And Joel Hannaran....(our closer, he's got some HEAT.) We are hoping a couple of pitchers get selected to the all star game (unlike years past, a player was picked by default). Charlie Morton has been something! The Mets fans travel well.

I hope the All-Star voting this year will be based on accomplishment rather than popularity. With so many injuries to starting players, the youngsters and bench warmers have shown some real surprising stuff. Hopefully they will be rewarded for their efforts.

Injuries are really messing up the Giants. Yesterday, the Reds smacked them all over the field. Timmy had yet another lousy day on the mound and freddie sanchez got hurt on a play.
The Panda will be back Tuesday against the D-backs, thankfully. But some key players are not going to be back- and Posey is out for the season.

Yes! This kid the pirates have catching, Brown, was from double A (again because our triple A guy was also injured) While Brown was not perfect, I thought he handeled himself pretty well.
I'm currently giving Lyle Overbay (or Overpaid as I heckle him) a get out of jail-free card, as our catching situation is critical. Overpaid has almost as many strikeouts as hits, is batting .233, has something like 7 errors and is making 5 million dollars. (the highest on our payroll). One of the sports radio shows had a caller call in and ask why Steve Pearce wasn't being given an opportunity to take that job and the sports writer said Overbay is good in the locker room. I don't even want to know what that means.

Good in the locker room usually means a leader type others look up to. Is a good thing.
Try not to be too hard of Overbay. He was always overrated in my book. But at least your management didnt dish out 50 million just to talk to Dice-K Mastusucker. He is now awaiting Tommy John surgery. That was a huge waste of money for the past few years.

I'm a half a season ticket holder. I have all three BOSOX games......can not wait. I've never seen them! Another great weekend of baseball in the burgh.
The Pirates travel to Cleveland next week end, I may go. The Indians are my second favorite team. Cleveland needs some sports team to bring them happiness (however, they ARE laughing big time at Labron!) Cleveland, small market team, much like Pittsburgh, doesn't have a huge payroll, or really any superstars...but they keep winning. That team has done an about face in two years! I love teams that do not buy championships.
That shortstop for the mets today was a tremendous athlete!

Cleveland needs to overhaul the Cavaliers. And, I'm not poking fun at LeBron until the Mavericks beat the Heat. LOL.
The Browns I like....Peyton Hillis is like a bulldozer. And I really like Colt McCoy. He has the stuff to do well in the NFL.
The Indians are doing well rebuilding after Martinez and Peralta left. Have some nice young hitters and some decent pitching. Tigers are giving them a run for it tho, I see.

I don't see many book readers, but I do see newspaper readers. Very common at PNC park, so common in fact, they have newspaper vendors (actual people) inside the entrances......and just as Atlast said, if thats what it takes to get you there......people would understand.
To a non baseball loving fan, the game is slow and boring. (exactly how I feel about golf)
However, one year. The new Harry Potter book dijour was released, and the shaded, cooler spots were lined with a younger crowd, reading their new books. No one thought
anything except *Hmmm, what a nice sight*

the Pirates have acquired catcher Mike McKenry from the Red Sox. McKenry, 26, is hitting .274/.369/.421 for Class AAA Pawtucket, and he hit .265/.328/.424 last year for Class AAA Colorado Springs, which is a great place for hitters. He's supposed to be strong defensively, so there's that, and he's probably slightly more likely to hit than Dusty Brown or Wyatt Toregas.

I arrive early to get the best seat in the house, only to realize that it's a triple a baseball game I am attending. What rabid fans would I have to face to find that perfect perch where I would have the best view of every pitch thrown. I enter hands loaded with my rugged high school mitt in one and and ice cold beer in the other. Today is going to be a great day. I am going to sit back and watch America's game, savor every slider and watch in amazement in the bases loaded full count ride the rookie pitcher works his way out of. Yep this is more than a perfect day. It's a day you can't experience anywhere else on the planet earth. This is my day, my day to relax and imagine only if that were myself on that field, determined that today I would throw the perfect game with a perfection never mastered before. Yep, me, myself and I would have a day to be remembered. Baseball, love it, hate, dismiss it, turn away from it, stop this can't be so. For how could anyone walk away from a perfect day of America's favorite pass time!
Peace

UGH... Giants lost to the A's (interleague series) last night after a loss to the D-backs the night before.
Lincecum did pitch better than his last couple of starts. He has been in a slump- and I think it is related to not having Posey catching. They seemed to have some good communication together. His decline began right after Posey got hurt.
But hey- Stewart's arm was something with 2 throw outs from home to second!! Nailed 2 A's very fast base runners.
I am really enjoying seeing Brandon Crawford as a rookie- the kid does have amazing hands! Of course, I'm biased- he's a local kid getting a start in the game, but I think he will have a career in the game.
Damn, Sandoval didn't hit worth anything last night! But it is so good to have him back.
On another note- the Cal Bears are in the college World Series and the women's team was also. Way kewl!! When I watch college or AAA league ball, I remember my brother. John died in 1990 and I miss the hell out of him. Don't care that he broke a couple of my fingers and once knocked me out when we were kids and he wanted me to catch for him as practice. Yikes- no mask! Dumb kids.

Hey! SF is playing the Indians here soon! I was thinking about going to one of the games.
Posey said about as much about his injury, but, the GM of the Giants shot off his mouth about the incident in a negative way. There was no animosity between Posey and the guy that smacked into him- so I don't get what's up with the GM other than having a key player out. Ugh, a broken ankle. Yup, one can get hurt on the field.

Way Kewl! Have a good time!
Ugh, the giants were pathetic against the twins last night! Poor Bumgarner was taken out in the 1st after the Twins got 8 runs!! Wasn't pretty.
I hope it is a different story tonight- but the Giants have lost 5 in a row, have key players out and look like the don't know which end of a bat to hold. My guys need to re-group! But I have been a Giants fan since I was 7 or 8 years old, so, I'm sticking with them! We have been through thick and thin.

It will be interesting to see how the Sox play the field without the DH and with Ortiz on a tear as of late. 9 games without a DH.
I have heard some weird configurations i.e. Ortiz at first, Gonzalez at third and Youkilis in the outfield. Lord help us on that one LOL.
And our pitching staff is dwindling due to injuries. The call ups have yielded some good stuff, some not so good. I'm expecting the management to be standing out on Yawkey Way saying to passersby, hey, you wanna pitch tonight? LOL.

Whew! The Giants took the 2nd game of the series against the twins! Looked like themselves out there again. But still not hitting all that great overall. Vogglesong was great- love his come back story.
But my favorite rookie, Brandon Crawford made 2 errors! And has not been hitting as well. I really want him to stay on the roster. Yes, a Bay Area boy!!
The Twins, however, have been very hot lately- so who knows about today.

the Pirates have acquired catcher Mike McKenry from the Red Sox.
-----------------
McKenry has soft hands, lots of balls have been getting by him. Kevin Correia had his own catcher (chris snyder who had back surgery) so maybe it's just getting used to each other. Good game overall, Pirates had eight hits for 5 runs, holding off the Orioles who had ten hits, kept it close with 4 runs. Hanrahan got his 20th save!
Baseball is starting to catch on here (we have had a major league record of 18 straight loosing seasons) this year we are at least playing 500 ball. 34,000 showed up Tuesday night (ball park holds 38k) and a typical Tuesday gets 18 to 22k.....and a week day afternoon game gets around 12k (I've been there when 3,999 others and me were there) Yesterday 25,377. It's so much more fun with people in the stands!
I'm really looking forward to this weekend.

Now keep in mind, we were awful for so long, nothing should have surprised us. In a game where our starting pitcher got real far behind in the fifth, and the bull pen was very beat up, the back up catcher came in pitched the rest
of the game. Turns out, he often threw batting practice.....lol

We went thru our share of horror years until the "Believe" season. Baseball is fun when folks catch the spirit and visibly support the team. And I think it helps the guys try a little harder too.
Who is Vogglesong and what did he comeback from? My next thing to google. :)

Vogglesong is a starting pitcher for the Giants that has had ups and downs in MLB for about 10 years and was thought to be out as a starter. He has been throwing great stuff for the Giants- and a damn good hitter!!
Today we play the Indians. I'm just jazzed that the Giants got out of the losing streak they were in and Lincecum, too! His was brilliant yesterday against the twins after having lousy games since late May. He had 12 strike outs and almost had a shutout. Damn, if the twins didn't get a run after Lincecum was taken out after the 7th and over a hundred pitches. But they won.
I am really enjoying how these guys are keeping it together with all the injuries. I doubt they go any further than one series in the play-offs, but I think they will be in at least one play-off series. Not hitting with any consistency, though. Not even Sandovol after getting back from injury. Her is our only real power hitter. Funny, I don't miss the Bonds days-I really don't like the one star thing- it is a team sport! He was watching the game at AT&T yesterday and I almost feel like he ought not show his face at the park!
I love seeing all the sell out games- the Giants play has brought some needed business to SF merchants. And this month, the giants have been doing a lot of ads for Pride. Kinda kewl.
Gotta go look up info/stats on the Indians- don't know them well.

The Redsox have reported Josh Beckett is still having lingering effects of the flu and will not play in this series
(could we have gotten any luckier?)
And Tim Wakefield???isn't he like 45 I had to look three times.....he pitched for us as a rookie and I'm not sure how much longer after that....So did Vogelsong.
The sky is threatning rain, and the weatherman is saying we may have a rain delay before the game starts. Paul Malholm on the mound for us (trade rumors flying about Paul) and whispers that Overbay may be out soon too :praying: We shall see.
OK, off to the ball park shortly! Is it interleague everyplace?

Beckett is still sick? Wakefield is somewhere past his early 40's LOL. He's good til the middle of July, then the age factor plays in and he throws his back out.
I'm telling ya, we are taking fans off the street and offering to let them pitch LOL.
Seems like almost everyone is doing interleague play. Is messing up my fantasy team stuff.
I hope for a good series even without pitching and a dh. Cant wait to see this line up for tonight.

I was hoping I'd get to see Mr. Knuckleball......I hope we can hit that. Somehow we managed 8 hits off of Lester...most were on the ground. And having said that, Malholm gave up 9 fly balls, all that went pretty deep.
(yes, I'm nerdy like that, I keep a score card).....A win is a win and I'm glad we got ONE off the sox.
I thought the best moment of the game, was first time at bat in the majors, Chase d'Amaud, hit a triple. The moment every youngster plays out in their head. The crowd gave him something to remember. Speaking of crowd. Lots of Bo-Sox
fans around.
The rain has moved away. Kobi did you watch the game?

I didnt get to see the game. But it sounds like it was well played. And no weird BoSox lineup LOL. That was a nice surprise.
Lester, normally, has a slow and troubled start to the season. He started well this year but has run into all kinds of problem in June. This sounds like one of his better outings tho.
I hope to catch the game today. Love watching Wakefield pitch.
Congrats on your victory!

Oh, yes that is a good stat! Don't you love it when a great pitcher has an outstanding game with all of their "stuff" working for them!
The giants took the Indians again today, 1-0- and it was an exciting game with the Beard closing in on his 26th save of the season. It sure is a hell of a good thing SF has the bullpen it does as our hitting sucks! Without Andres Torres being on this past week (both defensively & offensively), we would not have taken 5 in a row.

The Bo Sox fans have some strange loyalty! Hats inside out.....saw that alot until top of the ninth and then Jr. Ortiz came up to bat and *The Hammer* got him to ground out weakly right to first base (Ortiz didn't even run it out) Pittsburgh does not like that, and they booed him, BUT, the bo sox fans took their shirts off, turned them inside out and put them back on!!! We've never seen that before and many Pirate fans were High fiving each other after that. LOL!!!
At the beginning of the game, they announced Tim Wakefields name, and the whole place errupted with applause. The last time he played for us, was the last time we had a winning season. He looked the same (just a little fat around the middle) And, for the record, last night was the largest crowd ever at PNC park. It was a great game, and alot of fun.
They sold an unbelievable amount of standing room only seats. We had three Bo sox fan's standing right behind our box seats. So my sweetie and I shared our seats, you know, rotated thru (it was a Dad, a teen about 14 and another one 11 or 12) and the younger guy knew his baseball. (as do I) so I was having alot of fun with him and we didn't mind sharing the seats, gave everyone a chance to stand, sit....blah blah blah....anyhow, the Dad bought us Ice Cream Cones (for being nice) I haven't had ice cream in ages, as I don't eat like that, but let me tell you.......that just may be part of my baseball experience! However, the sugar (and the adrenaline) kept me awake half the night, and alarm Kat wanted me up at 5.......(yawn) getting ready to go to game three.......trying to pick out what broom to take! (lol) ~Lets' Go Pirates~ (and don't take those Philly's lightly, they are GOOD!)

Yes, you beat us on two errors, a pop fly tag up and a fielders choice. Thats how all four of your runs were scored. But, as is the case in baseball. The better team prevailed. You guys also had 2 errors. And left 8 runners on base. It could have been much worse. We'll take two out of three from one of the best teams in baseball. Your fan's pumped 4 million dollars into our economy in three days (thank you for that) tickets, hotel rooms, parking, eating out, buying things ect... and I found every one I came in contact with to be genuinely nice people who, just like me, love baseball.
I completely missed what happened to Tabata. Your pitcher came off the mound to field the ball, and the third baseman came over and somehow their legs became entangled and they layed motionless on the field. Then I looked over at first, when I saw Hurdle running out and saw Tabata laying
on the field. They gave us an update, it's a quad related injury.
We got another catcher (?) This was a super weekend, if you love baseball. Sold out on a Sunday!. I don't think that has happened in 10 years.
Alarm Kat is sleeping. I think I am going to go to bed too. We head to Toronto and I will be Jonesing it for baseball, as they are away until the fourth of july. No inside out Shirts today!......(and no ice cream)

We swept the Indians!! WOOT!! On another winning streak, but damn, we need some consistent hitting. Every game is a 1 or 2 run win only.
I love this thread- I'm starting to watch for other team stats and learn about other players, etc. that the rest of you are posting about so I can follow your team's standings. This will come in handy following the All Stars game and the play-offs. I'll have other teams to root for if the Giants don't end up back in.
OK, so I need to follow the Pirates, the Tigers, and the Red Sox for sure.... and study them up! Hey, as the play-offs get closer, other members will be posting (yanno, not the "real" baseball fanatics, ;?), those that don't follow the game all season) and I will have some savy about these other teams earlier on!!! Great! I really miss both my parents, one sister and my brother that I talked, maybe "lived" baseball with as a kid and young adulthood. Baseball loving family from way back.
Kind of fun that my older sister has actually gotten interested in it the last couple of years as she was never into any kind of athletics, to participate in or follow ever even within our family of sports nuts. Too bad she doesn't live close- but she and her husband have started going to AZ in the winter (they are in their 70s & 80's) and go to watch Spring training, so she has become interested. Cracks me up because our parents in retirement loved taking off in their truck and travel trailer to AZ every year to follow teams in Spring training as well as fish along the way at camping/RV areas- especially any near casinos!!
Yup, Corkey, America's favorite pastime!! You, betcha'!!!

I never heard of him before last week, when he pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up what (?) 9 hits/8 runs. Sorry for my Indians. They also are a small market team, with a low payroll and nothing great about them, just fundamental baseball. They started out very well, and now....they are struggeling. They had 16 strike outs. Oh, Bumgarner's mess with that twins game was a very unusual game for him. Poor guy. He is quite a pitcher all around. Even Lincecum went through a slump for awhile- all players do. I was glad to see Bumgarner get his stuff back- Isshhh... the Twins in that game hit everything he threw!! My jaw dropped to the floor because I have followed him (rookie last year and a big part of the Giants winning the WS).
Oh, Bonds was hard to take as a long time Giants fan. Yes, he disgraced the team and the game. Still is as far as I'm concerned. I do remember him early on when he first started out, but he became a primadonna fast and then the steroids. I guess it is kind of like die-hard Reds fans and dealing with Pete Rose- the team is not one player. I could smack Bonds and when he is at a home game, I wish they didn't even put him on the camera.
I have been watching the Giants since they arrived in SF in the 1950's (yup, I was 7 or 8 when they moved here from NY= my parents courted by going to see them back in new York before that). Been with them through thick and thin and Bonds and won't leave them due to one ass.
Probably the most rewarding thing about the team since Bonds left is that it is a team again, no stand out stars really. I love that about them even though there are a few players that I guess are top in the entire league- but there are those players on every team. It made my heart fly to see a bunch of scruffy guys out there last year working together, none of which was a super star and playing together. many are still on the team, but not all. But, the "style" of the ball club is very much post-Bonds and "lets not let the Bonds era take us down." There is a lot of sensitivity about him here and what he did and the pandering to his conceited, superficial self. I guess as an earlier player, the guy did have talent, but I remember him looking like he only needed to hit home runs and that was it. The guy moved like a snail in the out field and at times it looked like he felt like he didn't have to do his job other than hit balls and that he was the only reason the Giants ever won a game. The guy was good enough to be a great hitter actually without steroids- and look at all of the "star" players throughout the MLB that have been nailed for using them. Thinking of Mike McGwire, too. It is sad, but bonds is not the only one.
I never thought his defensive play was all that great.
I hate having my team associated with Bonds but have to remember other greats that were nothing like him like Willie Mays, Will Clark, Urebe, Willie McCovey, and Juan Marichal to name a few.
Gotta stick with my team, but there are some other players out there on other teams that I love to watch, too.

A very public moment in Pittsburgh was the spring training confrontation Jim Leyland had with Bonds, as you said *primadonna* and Leyland got in his face and screamed *I'm tired of kissing your ass* Bonds was traded at the end of that season. Mark McGuire, even more disgusting than Barry- Roid, is in a coaching position some where in baseball. After being on television and adamently denying any involvement of steroid use.......I was also very turned off on Baseball after the *strike*, it took years for it, (the sport) to recover from that.
We have a very young and extremely talented center fielder named Andrew McCutchen. Last I looked, he wasn't in the running for the All star Bid, and thats a shame, as he is outstanding. He runs, Bats and throws. Some have said he is a reminder of a young Barry Bonds......I hate to say being good, when he was young (barry-roid) went to his head.....but will end on a pun. Did you ever notice the disproportionate size of his head near the end of his playing days?

It is sad, but bonds is not the only one.
I never thought his defensive play was all that great.
I hate having my team associated with Bonds but have to remember other greats that were nothing like him like Willie Mays, Will Clark, Urebe, Willie McCovey, and Juan Marichal to name a few.
Gotta stick with my team, but there are some other players out there on other teams that I love to watch, too.
I never got to see Bonds play even on tv, but what you describe sounds very much like what we went thru here in Boston with Manny Ramirez. The press used to call it "Manny being Manny". First it seemed like a personality thing but then when he was fluffing in the outfield and on the bases and claiming he was hurt but refusing tests, it got very distracting in the clubhouse and brought down the morale of the team.
The players showed themselves to be a class act when they refused to address the problem publicly. But there was a very noticeable change on the field once he was traded to the Dodgers.
And then Manny tested positive for banned substances in LA and was suspended for much of the season. He was never the same player again. He was good in his day but was it talent or substances? Is there a way to distinguish between the two?
Seems a lot of old timers are having problems this year i.e. Dunne, Guerrero, Abreu, Posada.....is it age?
I love watching these new guys...Jemile Weeks of the Athletics is on my radar for my fantasy team. Very fast, good base stealing stats.

You are right on. The "talent v. substances" question will always cloud any achievement players like Bonds have. Really sad when you think about all the players, old and new that are so good at playing and really work hard to play their best.
I so agree about some of the new guys out there. Weeks is going to be a good one I think, too. He not only has speed, he has hands! Seems comfortable out there and yes, he might be one of the greats in progress. I like it that he and one of my other favorite rookies, Crawford are both with Bay Area teams. I'll be able to watch them a lot.
Although, I'm a die-hard Giants fan, I miss Tony La Russa as the A's manager here. He is just a good human being. His support for his daughter and standing up about date rape a few years ago, plus his work for shelter animals puts him in my way good guy column.
The giant organization this season during Pride Month has also backed the Glenn Burke story of being a gay player (as well as POC). http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/ann_killion/11/09/glenn.burke/index.html. Kudos to the organization!
Hey- who are some of the other rookie year players that interest us? It would be fun to see who other posters are watching.

Yes, Bonds really stands out when you see footage of him pre-roids. I did see him play in SF then a few times at the park and later- why the hell his use didn't get discussed much earlier is amazing. I just hope the hell that he (and many others) didn't mess up their hearts and we hear of early deaths.
Mainly, I want to see the raw talent and love of the game for the game out there. Baseball is really a game of athletic ability and strategy that takes brains to be good at it. I really appreciate watching how managers know their guy's strengths and how and when to use this on the field to try and score or defend.

As Kobi said, younger No Named guys are coming up and displaying talent. I'm enjoying the shock factor of it. Also, baseball seems to be going to the seasoned Managers....The names elude me right now, but the Washington Nationals manager who gave the team a half a day to resign his contract (and they did not) and then they brought in Oldie, but Goodie. I agree, again (good points Atlast) we are seeing stratagies become part of the game again and it not be the roid filled home run ball. I'm wondering when and if Jose Bautista has been tested.....(?) from a career nothing to a something......(? Hmmmm) No baseball for me . To be honest, I'm still recovering from my big week end. I have not had so much fun as a Pirate fan, since, well the 70's, when we were winning all the time. And I enjoyed those games with my Dad. Funny, waving my broom around on Sunday, SO reminded me of WHO I got my passion for baseball from!

Cubs v. Giants in 54 minutes.... :hangloose:
It is raining hard here today, so I am glad SF is not playing at home. Guess I better check the pre-game show and see what the wheather is like in Chicago! Hummm... do they have a dome field?
ALH.
Wrigley Field isnt domed. Was built back in the early 1900's and is the second oldest stadium in MLB. Very pretty tho. I like the ivy covered walls.
The rookie crop this year includes:
Beachy and Kimbrel of Atlanta - Beachy is a starter, Kimbrel is the closer
Espinosa 2b/ss of the Nationals - wish I had held on to him
Turner 2b/3b and Gee p of the Mets
Trumbo 1b Angels
Pineda p Mariners - very impressive
Those are the ones I am watching.

I know, I'm an idiot! I thought after I posted then logged off- "Wait! They have Wrigley Field!!!" As soon as I tuned into the second game yesterday, I remembered the wonderful ivy walls and those "roof" seats are something. I am having such a good time being able to see away games on TV this season.
WOW, the Giants hit yesterday! And Zito's return on the mound after injury was a great start for him.
Ah, yes! Pineda of the Mainers is a rookie to watch along with Weeks of the A's! Nt favorite SF rookie, Brandon Crawford (SS) got some hitting going yesterday. He is the Giants rookie that came up after Fontenot got hurt. Again, he demonstrated keen skill defensively, but he has work to do with at bats. He started his very first ML at bat with a Grand Slam last month! First pitch. Then did some very consistent hitting until a couple of weeks ago. But the last 3 games he has improved. Hope this continues. Kind of a cute thing that happened at his first home game for SF was that his Mom caught one of his foul balls! He is a local kid and his folks and sisters come to all the home games- been SF fans forever as well as high school friends coming to root for their "hero." A few were even in Chicago yesterday. Makes it more fun.
When we play the Mets, Nationals and Atlanta, I will zero in on the guys you list. The Mets are coming up soon here at home. And I am looking foreward to seeing the Tigers after we finish up with the Cubs. They are tearing things up this year. I think they will give my Giants a run for it.
I'm trying to get my 2 nephews that live in the San Jose area to come up for a game in SF again soon. Even though you see much more on TV, I do love the feel of going to the ball park. AT & T is a really fun park to go to and has easy acess via public transit for me from here in the East Bay.

Whoa! My Giants lost to the Cubs (2-1) in one of the best games ever. Both pitchers were phenomenal (Lincecum v. Dempster as starters) and some great defensive plays as well as keen strategies by both managers. It really was a baseball fan's lovers game!
One more tomorrow in the series then SF goes to play the Tigers Thinking Hack will have some things to say about that series. I am anxious about this series as the Tigers are very strong- might well see some deficits (like hitting) the Giants have really show up while playing them.
does anyone know when the All Star rosters will be publicized? I'm getting more excited about it- ought to be terrific!

If you like management strategy, you'll love the Tigers. Jim Leyland and Gene Lamont are two of the best in the league in my opinion. Interleague play brought the Tigers here, otherwise I wouldn't see much of them.
I hope they never take interleague play away. However, the coaches don't care for it. Enjoy!!
Ok the BoSox rolled into Philadelphia smack into another Cliff Lee shutout. Last night they wasted a rare excellent outing by Lackey. They also stuck Gonzalez in right field and Ortiz at first. Neither managed a hit. Doh.
One more game and interleague play is over for us. I do like being able to see more NL teams but I dont care for having to use NL rules in their parks and AL rules in their parks.
I mean seriously, we have a DH for a reason....old guy who can still hit but is a menace in the field. You dont make a mediorce hitter the DH. So a big weapon in the game is missing. And AL pitchers havent had to bat since little league....thats just not fair.
Give me enough time and I might be able to find a conspiracy thing in this LOL.

Ok my guys salvaged one game in Philly and that might only be because we hit a line drive off Cole Hamels wrist forcing him out of the game.
I was sighing in relief that interleague play was over and just realized we are on the way to Houston to play the Astros this weekend.
I have 2 questions for baseballers:
1. Has your team become very commericialized? The BoSox have official <whatevers>. And are adding more. We have an official ice cream, hot dog, mri providers, hospital, coffee etc. Today I picked up some freakin cheese doodles......the official cheese doodle of the Boston Red Sox. It's weird.
2. What does the month of September look like for your team? I was noticing the Sox play only the Yanks, Orioles, Rays, and Blue Jays over and over the entire month. Is anyone/everyone else playing only division teams the last month?

Philly, just like the Bo Sox, is sold out every game. They have been a very good team for an awful long time.
I was unable to stay awake until the end of the Pirates Vs.Toronto game. Again, we took the series, but not a sweep. We get the Astros at home beginning 4th of July and then the Cubs, before the All Star break.
HA HA.....The pirates have a hard enough time getting their own fans to go to baseball games, let alone to endorse any products.
Tonight there is a good match up. Cleveland and Cincinnati. I saw on sports net Gary Sizemore had a nasty collision with the outfield wall on Wednesday. He stayed in the game. I'm sure he felt the effects of it yesterday. They were off last night. Cleveland will need his with the Reds.
Who is hosting the all star game this year? I hate to admit it, I don't even know.
Voting for the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star Game ended Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET. When the polls re-open, it will be to allow fans to choose the final All-Star for the American League and National League teams.
The full rosters, minus the 34th player for each squad, will be announced this Sunday at noon ET on TBS. In addition to the starters, who are voted on by the fans, the pitchers and reserves will be chosen by the players and All-Star managers (Bruce Bochy in the NL and Ron Washington in the AL).
Alex Rodriguez is one of five Yankees who were the leading vote-getter at his position after the final update to voting. (AP photo)In the final update before the polls closed, the leading vote-getters in the AL were: Russell Martin at catcher, Adrian Gonzalez at first base, Robinson Cano at second base, Alex Rodriguez at third base, Derek Jeter at shortstop, David Ortiz at DH and Jose Bautista, Curtis Granderson and Josh Hamilton in the outfield.
In the NL, the leaders were: Brian McCann at catcher, Albert Pujols at first base, Rickie Weeks at second base, Placido Polanco at third base, Troy Tulowitzki at shortstop and Ryan Braun, Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday in the outfield. Because Pujols is injured, he will miss the game.
The 82nd All-Star Game will be played July 12 at the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field.

Have to agree on both 1 & 2! The Giants (and the A's- both here in the Bay Area of CA) have "Official" everything!! All of the ball park give-a-ways have logos of sponsors on them. Although, they do hand out some pretty kewl stuff especially for kids and I like that because it is so damn expensive for families to go to a game these days.
Something that has always bothered me is that our park is AT&T park- I know it has to do with finances, but it was built about 10 years ago and is really great and I wish it had a name from baseball, not a huge corporation. The park was designed well and located well for public transportation and even getting in and out of SF easily. It is nice looking and incorporates many of what makes the great old parks so beautiful like red brick plus has nice walkways along the waterfront for all to enjoy- not just baseball goers. Not a bad seat in the place, really- so you can see everything well even if you are in the "cheap seats." But I keep thinking that parks like Fenway & Wrigley just sound like baseball!
All of SF's home games have sold out this season- and actually have for a few years since the new park was built. Yes, winning the WS is part of it, but SF is a baseball city. It does have working class immigrant roots historically that were more about fishing and the docks. And there is also the move back in the 50's from NY that drew a lot of people that did the "go west" thing for economic opportunities.
You know, I would really like to own Ken Burn's history of the game as well as his series on the "Negro League." The game is far more than a sport- really is.
Yes, SF is playing all divisional teams the last month. I think it is like this across the MLB for all the pre- play off excitement between rivals.
OK, I am nervous about SF and the Tigers tonight- they just don't have any consistency with hitting and I think this is what will continue to give us grief. Yeah- SF has fantastic pitchers and some great defensive players, but, the teams that I think will get to the WS have some bats, too!
I'm stocked that Bochy is going to manage the NL All Stars- he is quite the strategist. Doesn't look like we will have anyone on the NL roster except pitchers. Posey & Sanchez are injured and they might have made it.

Pirates lost to the National 2 to 1......
But I was more interested in Cleveland and Cincinnati....The Indians kicked the reds butts!
Yay me. The reds are in our Division, and The Indians are my Second favorite team in baseball, and helps me stay connected to AL baseball.
Gary Sizemore is one tough cookie. After that collision into the wall Wednesday, he had 2 hits, for two runs and two RBI's. I was shocked he even played. (maybe the days of the winers are fading away too)Sizemore had a homer and a double. Two good at bats.
Phillies put Madson on the 15 day list. His wrist and hand are pretty baddly bruised.
Thanks for the all star info Kobi. Once again, the Pirates were snubbed. No pirates selected. We have a couple that should have been. While I largely agree, this year the teams DO look like they have position players with skill (less popularity)......now one pirate will be selected by default.
Exhale.....maybe next year.
I have to check on Lyle overpaid. See what he's been doing. The trade rumors are heating up with all of our injuries, everyone thats been called up from the minors is doing pretty well. OVERPAID needs to go. But I guess he gets that 5 million GTD.

Pirates beat the Nationals 5 to 3. So Our Short Stop sufferred a concussion last night. Ronnie Cedeno. Someone kicked him in the head at a play at second. He's on the 7 day disabled list. Sound odd? He is the first player to utilize this 7 day disabled list since it was put into effect. It is for concussions only (and is mandatory, if it's a concussion, you sit for seven)
Alot of haters in this town when it comes to Cedeno. Still mad that we didn't keep Jack Wilson I'm guessing. I don't think Ronnie is that bad. (please, with overpaid over on the corner,,,uuugh)
So what was up with that temper tantrum from 6 foot 11 relief pitcher Jon Rauch? (Philles and Toronto) the pitcher was being restrained by his manager and had his shirt torn off in doing so.....I guess he was challenging the umpire......Wow, jealous that the home town fans are still liking Halladay?
No baseball on my networks. It was Tennis (which I chose) or golf.....no thanks.

I caught some of Wimbeldon this year and was glad to see Serena back out there. but, the woman that won sure played great! It is nice to see all the new players coming up. I have been so glued to baseball, I haven't followed tennis as much as usual. I played in college and started to play at age 4. But was not welcome on the snooty courts/tennis club because of my Dad being a garbage collector and an immigrant. But, my folks fought the snoots and I was able to take lessons. LOL... at 7 I started to compete and had a powerful serve for a kid and boy, did I ever enjoy smashing aces at all the WASP girls that had doctors, lawyers, archetects for fathers! It is a great game, but has a very classist and racist history. One reason I have really enjoyed the williams sisters- and the fact that they are also highly skilled women players.
Hey, it looks like the Indians have been back in the game! Hell, the took SF in their recent series a couple of games.
Yeah, that outnurst by Raush (sp?) was something! I think he was pissed because of a couple of pitches that were called balls. And the night before Brian Wilson's tantrum bugged me. I love him but thought it was childish.
Whoa- the Giants routed the Tigers yesterday, 15-2!!! Our bats were humming! Honestly, I thought SF would not really beat Detroit except for maybe 1 game. Couldn't believe the hitting, every strter had a hit and Tejada hit a grand slam. Plus Crawford hit a 3 run homer. Maybe my favorite rookie has found his bat!!!
They continued right on hitting after the 2 hour rain delay after the 3rd. But, I bet the Tigers come back with a vengence today.
So strange to see SF with that many runs, they are dead last in offense in the entire league!
The A's lost, but Jamile Weeks continues to be hitting well as a rookie. I think that kid is on his way to being one great ball player.

Just like you, I was a little bit before title nine. I always loved tennis and tennis courts were few and far between. My Dad, (I love that he was kid who never grew up) used to take me to a warehouse on the week ends and using chalk, he'd chalk off half a court on the asphalt (he'd measure it)
and I would hit the ball against the warehouse wall. He'd run around and retrieve all of my errant balls. He knew nothing about tennis. As I got older, and still loved everything tennis, two tennis courts were built not too far from our house and he'd take me, and he'd stand on the other side of the net and toss me balls. Because he was a fierce competitor, those balls were not tossed right to me, i had to run and actually work to return a volley. Finally, when I was a Junior in High school. Tennis courts were layed and I made the tennis team, turned out I was pretty good! All from my basterdsized training from my dad. I still play occasionally. It's hard to find someone who likes to play. I love what the Williams' sisters have brought to tennis. Tremendous athletes, both of them.
Back to baseball. Here we are, almost at half way baseball mark and the Pirates are 2 1/2 out of first place. Thank you cleveland for continuing to beat down those reds! Because I love the battery of baseball (pitching and catching) I tend to be a little myoptic with the pitchers. The poor AL pitchers having to bat and oh my goodness, RUN, is just pittiful.....Cleveland lost Fausto Carmona as he was running to first and he tripped over his own two feet, did a belly flop and had to be removed....(sorry, I had to giggle) Baserunning is such an important part of the game and the AL and the DH makes it a bit harder for us National leaguers to get that part of the game being remiss. (You may recall, how we Booed Ortiz for not running out a weakly hit ground ball to first ~Bo Sox~) well, again DH. And then seeing the Indians pitcher who couldn't bat and then couldn't run....can anyone tell me why AL games are almost an hour longer than NL games on average?
Go Pirates! It's so good to not be the basement Bucs!

No, the Pirates are NOT in the cellar!! They are in good position at this point in the season.
I'm having fun with looking at other teams that posters have an interest in.
Oh, yes, the AL and the DH!!! I am glad SF will be finished with inter-league series as of tomorrow.
Oh that bae runner "fall" was rather funny- hope he didn't get hurt, though. One pitcher that is not a terrible hitter is Ryan Voglesong (pitching today against the Tigers)- he is a very good bunter, too. Now, he is no slugger, but, at least when he is up, I don't have that "Ugh, the pitcher is up" during times in games when a hit/ sac-bunt is needed! One of the worse is Tim Lincecum and I hate that it is so- he is one of my favorite pitchers and plays the game with heart.
Hummm... I am kind of bummed that during the SF v Detroit series that I didn't/won't see Verlander throw- he is something.

Did anyone see the Padres and Mariners? Maybin walked after only three balls, which set them up nicely for their only run during the game. Very disappointing but really the Mariners haven't been great for a while and I am not a fair weather fan with any of my teams, really.
The Red Sox aren't where I'd like them to be but they won a great game against the Astros. Still not used to all this Interleague play!
Can't really complain with Cleveland right now, either. Although I live closer to Cincy, I grew up with the AL and can't really get into NL teams although I keep an eye on Joey Votto I really like him.
Who's looking forward to the All-Star game? The home run derby is my favorite part to watch.

The tigers have more in Coaches than they do in players. No great Pitchers and no great hitters. They are also a streaky team. I love Jim Leyland. He'll prepare his team to come and play......
I have been checking out your guy Bumgarner, since admittingly, i never heard of him before the Twins fiasco. He is on *fire*!. He averages 10 strike outs per game with only one walk......wow. How is it that I never have heard of him (loving pitchers as I do)........
ETA: The Giants and Tigers are on Fox today. If it rains here (and it is looking like it will) I'll watch that game. I'm liking this thread more and more. Wish would hear from more baseball junkies!

I really like hearing about other people's teams and about players i don't know much about.
UGH- San Diego is up 2-0 vs. SF in the first today!! And the Tigers did come back and won against SF yesterday.
Voglesong made the All Stars!! I am happy!!

Houston is here. We are very close to being in first place. UNBELIEVABLE. The ballpark was sold out again.
I'm suffering terribly from this extremely high humidty, to the point I wanted to leave in the second inning, and that never happens. Glad I stayed. We had 16 hits! (only five runs)
OMG we had 5 errors in one inning, they only marked us for three, but it was 5. Home team gets the benefit of the doubt. It was so sad, our short stop was crawling on his hands and knees to retrieve a ball he initially muffed up, then the third baseman who was backing up the play, muffed it twice (once trying to catch it, and dropped it when trying to throw it) so short stop went crawling over to it, but the left feilder came all the way in and grabbed it, and made a laser throw to first and OVERBAY dropped it.
Houstons catcher had a rough game and I'll be shocked if he is not concussed. He did a fantastic job of protecting the plate when thirdbase minorleague call up Harrison tried to score, Harrison broke his nose on the play. Carlos Corporan, the catcher...took three foul balls off his face mask and was very shaken. In the 8th innng, the pirates attempted a steal and Corporan was still seeing stars I guess, he threw the ball, as if he was supposed to, to short stop.....They came out and checked on him and he stayed in the game.
Yes Atlast, I saw where Jim Leyland had his team prepard to beat you guys. I read the recap and giggled, I could just see jim hiding in the corner of the dug out getting a cigarette in without getting caught because he was so nervous!
I also saw Ryan Vogelsong got the nod for all stars. We still love him here.
Anyone see the game today? It was the Root sports selection of the day.

I wish I could have gone to a game today- BUT SF just lost a nail-biter to SD!! ARG!!!
One of those games that I hate to see my guys lose, but a damn good ballgame!
Yes, Vogie is in! Plus, Lincecum, Wilson and Cain. Looks like the National league team is top heavy with SF pitchers. Damn, I just know that Posey and Freddie Sanchez might very well have made it on. Sanchez might be back to play in late August- he's recovering well. Posey has his cast off and says he is out of pain entirely. I think he has a long way back and he may not ever be the player he was. That was a very bad injury. But, we shall see- it's the majors and injuries can be heartbreaking.
Yes, the Pirates seem to be doing well! Hey, ya' nevah' know! They could go far! believe me, many people didn't think SF would have even be in the WS last season, let alone, take it.

I was going over posts today for the All star game. Some of my favorite pitchers are in there... Lincecum, Cain, Lee, Halladay... did Wilson make it??, oh wait yes he did, as a reliever. Victorino may make it. I hope so, he is a dedicated player. If I read correctly Josh Hamilton is playing... and many others. It is great not to have a favorite team... I get to cheer for everyone. Jose Bautista...go Blue Jays!!! I am glad Y. Molina made back catcher, I like him. I like the Modina's, I bet their mama is like super duper proud of her boys.
Anyway...wanders away to see who else is on the rosters.

I know, I am jazzed with the pitching roster on the NL team. Oh yes, Lolina is one hell of a catcher! Yup, Mama Modina has to be proud of her sons! And WOW with the Week's family players!! Jamile, the A's rookie is going to carry on the tradition in that family.
UGH- SF lost the last 2 to the Padres!! Weird, since SD is almost in the cellar- but they always do well against SF here at AT&T. Plus, both games have been really fun to watch as in both, SF caught up, then in the 9th have been so close! Rivalry in Northern v. Southern California National league aside from Dodgers & Giants!!
SF will always be my favorite team, but, I just like following players throughout both leagues because I just love baseball.
My guys are rollin along but the Yanks are rollin along ahead of them still.
Lester sprained something last night. We do not need another pitcher out of the line up. With Dice K gone, Lackey lacking as usual, Bucholtz out with a back thing, the rotation is shrinking.
Looking forward to the guys getting a few days of rest and recuperation.

Well, it took 14 innings, but SF beat San Diego tonight!! Hope they do the same tomorrow. Some game, again- these teams just really get going with each other and both have played some great ball.
Nate "the Great" Nate Schierholtz smacked a home (had 2 tonight) run to braek the 5-5 tie and the Giants had another walk-off win. SF didn't tie it until late (like in the past 2 games they ended up losing), but they won this one!
The Giants hitting ups and downs make me nuts! They are consistently inconsistent on offense! Hot, cold, hot cold..... ARGH!!! But Wilson had a good couple of innings and had his stuff. Good, no more dumb tantrums!
Buster Posey sat in for a couple of innings with our usual announcers and that was kewl- he is doing pretty good after his injury, but it is obvious it is driving him nuts not playing. He probably thinks about what it will really mean to his career and this was only his second season in the majors. He was doing so well and is very talented. But, he seems like a bright guy and level headed- so if his career ends due to this, I'm sure he will do fine doing something else and he is very young.
I am getting excited about the All Star game- now I will be able to watch some of the players you all bring up that have been selected in one game!! Way kewl!
Jury selection began yesterday for Roger Clemens perjury trial. Anyone have thoughts on this case?

I was able to watch the game on Tuesday between the Tigers and Angels. I was able to watch both Verlander and Haran pitch. Both are quite astounding. It was quite the game. Great defense, but outstanding pitching. It was one of those games that had me mesmerized by the technical skill of both men. Haren was a freaking machine!! I could tell by the 8th that Verlander should have not gone back out, his arm was tired and probably quite sore. Then he got ejected. I don't get to watch the Tigers very often, and the Angels only somewhat more often.
I am enjoying looking for the little stars on the backs of the jerseys. I saw some of the players from the Angels that I quite enjoy with little stars. Yeah!!!
You know I am pulling for Buster. I wonder, philosophically, what it is that makes a "star" fall? What is it in their life "trajectory" that creates such a short flame. Not that I want that for Buster, but we don't know what it will be like for him. Young or not, still it has to be one of the ultimate heartbreaks for athletes that train so hard and so long to get where they are and then *poof*. It makes this fox curious.

When SF played the Tigers during the last inter-league series, I was totally amazed at the offensive stats! I so wanted to see Verlander pitch, but he wasn't in that rotation- they have great defense, too!
I need to research the Clemmens case- know very little about what is going really.
Yup, Posey has a long haul ahead. Who knows what will be for him. I hope we see him back out there- but maybe not as a catcher? Don't know.
Hope SF wins again tonight! And damn, when are those Red Sox going to get going? Thery are my fav AL team.

I had no idea until the game that Verlander leads for taking runners out at first...<scratching head> cannot for the life of me remember what it is called. We used to call it picking when I played, but heck that was bush league praire ball. :canadian:

They are having a bit of a problem finding a jury pool of 36 for the Clemens trial. After 2 days, only 18 have been selected as potential jurors.
The rest have been dismissed for having the guts to say either that Congress should have better things to do besides investigating steroids in baseball or everyone lies to Congress...even Congress lies to Congress.
I am still waiting for the person who says, we have a record deficit and a looming credit crisis and we are wasting money on this?

Why isn't this considered double jeopardy? Please don't provide an answer. I don't want to know.
Is Clemens going to be the new face for steroids?
I still want to know if they have tested Bautista?
After doing virtually nothing to Barry-roid- Bonds and allowing Mark Mcguire to Coach in major league baseball, this is real old.

My honey told me I could go to a game with you when the Pirates are in California...Aug 8, 9, or 10....the Pirates would love hear my big mouth way out there.......LOL thats what she said!
If I could make airfare work for the daytime game on Wednesday....(and I am still looking into that, the red eye) I'd only burn one PTO from work.
And to answer your question, no it isn't wrong to look for that quality. It was a non-negotiable with me. If you don't like baseball, I go without you, and you don't bitch, because baseball is what I do. I also like womans basketball, we don't even get that on TV here, I have to settle for college. I don't like men's basketball. I'm not a fan of football, but I never interfere with her watching or going.
But we have talked about this before. I am very active, and it's hard for me to expect anyone to keep up with me. Here is a hint how I know if they are a semi baseball fan. When I buy a scorecard, and start filling it out, and I don't get the protracted eye roll....it's not someone humoring me.
I see lots of femmes at the games, season ticket holders, you get to know one another........it's not just a guys sport. Don't settle!
Happy to see my Detroit Tigers back on track after that inter-league play. First time they didn't finish inter-league with a winning record. I've mentioned earlier in this thread that, although I've very limited interest in modern day baseball as a sport, I love vintage baseball imagery and collect original vintage photos.
Thought I'd show two photos I picked up over the past few weeks.
The first was motivated by my trip to San Francisco last week. Whilst there, I went to the Giants Stadium and to their shop where I was able to buy various items of tacky and over-priced memorabilia .... I thought back to the original Giants and the Giants will always be a New York team to me so I took the initiative to buy this photo.
It's of the Giants 1922 side. It is a historically significant photo as the Giants were in that tussle for supremacy with the Yankees - this was the second series in succession that they had fought over, with the Giants winning both, but the Yankees were to open Yankee Stadium the next year, winning the World Series that year also and the rest is history .....
http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad103/ulyssesgq/1922Giants.jpg
The second photograph I bought was shot in 1958 and is of Gussie Moran in a Yankees shirt. Moran was a famous tennis player and one of the first women who introduced glamour to the sport. In fact, her tennis outfits (tame by today's standards) scandalised the sport. Anyway, I bought this one because I think she looks great in the Yankees shirt (much better than something vulgar such as a Boston Red Sox jersey):

UGh about the awful fan acident Friday during Rangers game- the fan that fell out of stands trying to catch the ball. tragic as his 6 year old son was right there. I can't imagine witnessing that.
Oh yeah, the All Star break is needed. Re-group for play-off strategy and well, the trades that we all know will go on. And time off - a lot of players need a break. But, I am excited about the actual game. I hope favorite players of all got in it.

So, I just finished watching the confrontation with Gregg and Ortiz. I was reading a sports blog yesterday, that said Gregg threw three pitches inside by two feet. Thats pretty far inside. He definitely was throwing low and inside on him. The catcher was setting up inside. And he got him to do exactly what he wanted, a shallow pop up.
Ortiz, I don't know what kind of player he is, most likely he is a was and is all power now, I suspect bad knees, as he can't run and certainly doesn't like too. I also suspect he gets his ass kissed. I personally witnessed him here, hit a shallow fly and he stood and watched it, did not run out the play (inning ending) and went right into the dug out. The Pittsburgh fans Booed him. We don't like that. We don't have designated hitters.
So Ortiz not running and just watching the ball, would be Ortiz like. However, 8 ejections in that series.....a beaning or two every game. Thats dirty ball. The kind the Cardnials used to play. But I can recall Pinella screaming if any of his guys got hit. Maybe baseball is too long. Really, is a 4 day break even a break>
The father falling out of the stands to catch the free baseball was too much to think about. I feel for the player too. The next day he hit a foul ball that hit a fan in the head and caused an injury. Albeit, I am no longer interested in the baseball, there was a time when I was....
In other news, both the Reds and the Brewers needed to loose (and didn't) for us to slide into first place. We've been sold out every night since the Bo sox have been here. That hasn't happened/ for ever I don't think. I don't recall three rivers stadium being full very much.
I am waiting to see what happens with the trades. I find it interesting, Pedro Alveras is recovered, but they are keeping him in the minors, these rookies we have up here are on fire! Overpaid committed another defensive error saturday and they yanked him from the game.....(hoping they get rid of him) and keep Malholm. We shall see.

I caught most of the all star game, but I have been dealing with super awful sinus headaches (wind and all the crap floating around in it) for a couple of days and the OTC stuff I take usually makes me sleepy. so, I was in and out during the game.
YES, NL!!
I am jazzed about the LGBT game in SF coming up, too-
LGBT Night
presented by AT&T
Monday, 8/29 vs. CHC 7:15pm
Celebrate the Bay Area's rich LGBT culture at the Giants annual LGBT Night! All members of the LGBT community, family, friends, and community organizations are invited to come out and show their pride at this special event. The special event ticket package includes a seat in the LGBT section to watch the Giants take on the Chicago Cubs, as well as an LGBT-themed Giants hat, only available with purchase of the special ticket. Partial proceeds from each special event ticket will be donated to non-profits in the LGBT community. Don't miss out on the fun!
The Gianjts were the first MLB team to make a video for the "it's get Better" project which makes me proud! I know, it's SF!!
TRADES-
Looks like beltran might become a Giant-
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/san_francisco_giants/ This site has a bunch of info on all the team trades.
This is what the first or second day of the Clemens trial and already the judge has issued a mistrial.

I'm thinking, maybe, the prosecutors who pushed the envelope causing the mistrial are forfeiting for some reason.

Am I wrong to think they should let the Clemmens thing die?
WOOT! The Giants beat the Padres in 12, 6-2! For some reason, we always have a bad time with them- and they are not a very good team.
But SF's hitting remains sporatic and unreliable. Not good. But Huff smacked one out and my favorite rookie, Crawford played great defense as usual. Hope his bat comes along.

I'm late reporting, but it has been a cccrrraaazzzzyyyyy week.... anyhoo...
First off I have to say I am grateful, seriously grateful, to have a PVR. I recorded the game because I was in the middle of... well whatever does not really matter, and then I actually sat down to watch it... so there was what like 1 hour of ball and 3 hours of commercials. I would have fallen asleep too ALH, even without a sinus headache.
All in all stellar pitching to start off. Good game. What I enjoyed the absolute most was watching the camaraderie between the players. There was a lot of chatting in the dugout, on bases, between catchers and pitchers. It is good to see a community of athletes come together, shoot the shit and enjoy themselves.
I am always happy to listen to the stats, but I have to admit my mind was on 100 different tasks and I did not take the time to sit and enjoy myself as much as in other years.
Ahhhh well. Maybe there will be a game on Sunday I can lay down and watch. I will have tired dogs from dancing :blueheels: Saturday and a social bone that will be sprained. But my couch loves me and she will always open her cushions wide and let me in. <that almost sounds dirty> :sunglass:

Yup- I like that camaraderie stuff too! In all sports- when you can see players digging what they are doing. The AS game was pitching all the way- makes sense when I think about how many great ones there are playing these days.
I have to take some time off baseball to watch the women's soccer this sunday- there is some good stuff with Team USA going on!!
Ah, the couch after dancing!
It is the top of the 2nd with SF 2-0 against SD at the moment. Whoa, Tim Lincecum just got a single- not a very good hitter- even less so than most pitchers. Maybe my guys are getting into a hitting round- last night, 4 of 6 runs for SF were based upon walks and a couple of SD errors. Ross just hit a homer.... kewl!
OK, I have to walk my dog and put in ear plugs and listen to the game with a happy pooch! But it has been windy and foggy again- just plain cold.. argh! My arthritic joints get really cranky when it is like this.

I took tomorrow off so I could go to the afternoon game. I don't know what it is about afternoon baseball that I love so much, and it's going to be 95 and dangerous humidity. Betcha my butt will be inside the club with the rest of the fans for the comfort of the a/c......but thats not baseball. I can sit at home and do that. Pirates are in first place for the first time since 1991
Clint Hurdle should get manager of the year, no matter where the Bucco's end up.We have tickets for the remainder of the home series. This division is tight. The St. Louis Cardnials roll in to town Friday. They are a finess team. They make few mistakes.I'm looking for the games to be close and the heat to make the players *edgy*.
Life has been so good this summer. I haven't enjoyed baseball this much, since, well, I don't when.
That darn Lyle Overbay (overpaid you may know him as in my rants) We are nearing the trade deadlines, and I SO want the owners to trade his sorry ass and his outrageous salary, and wouldn't you know it, all of a sudden he can hit:seeingstars:WTH!

YES, the Pirates are in First!!! Lookin' good!
It is so much more exciting when divisions are tight, I think. I love close games that end up being won on a whole lot of mental determination really.
I am having a great time with the Giants taking the Dodgers in a series this week. Hope they win again today. My favorite SF pitcher is starting- Lincecum. Jeff Keppinger will be playing today for SF after his trade. We need his bat!! Our offense is just not consistent, although better lately. Had a 5-0 shutout against LA for the first game of the series. And Belt returned to the club yesterday and got a homer - first up, first pitch!!
Have fun at the games! ugh.. yes, the heat!

I watched the FIFA final on Sunday with some girlfriends. I inwardly whined cause I coulda watched the latter half of a game, any game, on Sunday after that...but I had company. I mentioned, in my most cheerful voice, we could watch baseball. And so after that was shot down we sat about and chatted. I was still inwardly whining like a puppy that wants to play ball.
Enjoy Lincecum. I like watching him.

Today was my 22nd game I've attended so far.:pirate-steer: Yeah baby, love my Bucco's. And These tickets were bought last year. Who ever guessed they'd be winning like this.
OK, So I survived the 95 degree heat, I drank five, 20oz. bottles of water @ $3.75 each....is that insane or what?....anyhow, I knew I had to drink water because if I didn't, I'd get that nasty ass headache and the dizzy stuff.
Loyal fan that I am, I am proud to report, I did not once go inside the club for A/C. I sat in my box seat and baked better than a lay's potato chip. Yes, I wore sunscreen, and yes I wore an ugly hat.....but it was not enough. I just took a precautionary motrin and am currently chugging IRONMAN PERFORM (GNC's version of gatorade),
Now for some base ball news. Pirates lost. Errors! Once again we had our short stop and third baseman backing up the play crawling around on their hands and knees to get the ball......three errors.
Overpaid did nothing today, but leave two runners on base twice....and got booed for it. (yes, I was one who was very vocal) We gave away the game. I hate when we do that.
It's anybodys division. The reds, the cardinals, the brewers or the pirates....a slump right now, will put any of the four mentioned teams into the basement as we are all tied for first as I type this.
Enjoy your evening games! I have a feeling I'll be in bed earlier than usual.

LOL- no takers, eh?
Damn, the Dodgers beat us 1-0- no score until the 7th (homerun by Navarro)! Lincecum was great as usual (love the "Freak"), but Kershaw was better- hell of a pitcher (12 strikeouts, Lincecum had 7). sad loss for our Timmy!
Again, our offense just didn't get the job done! Keppinger had his SF debut after flying in from Houston in the AM! Had a delayed flight to boot- but he did nothing with the bat just like everyone else.
We play the brewers at home on Thursday evening.
I think SF will take the division- but unless we start hitting consistently, we won't get much further.

Kershaw is a hell of a pitcher. I don't get to watch the Dodgers often, but that kid can throw. His stats are solid. He has been a Dodger since the beginning, if I am not mistaken.

Finally the game got going, but the cardnials scored four runs in the first inning.....and we couldn't mount the big come back....6 to 5....with more rain, not enough to cool it off, only made it worse.
Now, the Giants are playing the brewers and we need the giants to pick it up. The brewers have a great offense and can kill you with those bats.
I hope you can watch it on TV Atlast. It should be good games. Both first place teams in the division...(well, pirates are hanging on by half a game)thats how insanely close this race is........

After dropping two straight to the Cards, (remember I said they play baseball close to perfect) Clint Hurdle (Our Manager) decided it was time to force them to make errors. We played recklessly aggressive on those basepads, and it worked. They made throwing errors and mental errors, and we eeeked out a win to avoid a sweep and thanks to your Giants beating the Brew Crew, we hold first place by % points.
Pittsburghers raised the Jolly Rogers!.........(smile)

National television last night....the Pirates are getting some attention! It was blacked out here. So, 100 games have been played, 62 to go. And here we are in first place. We beat the braves who threw Tim Hudson at us. To get a win, on a Nationally televised game, from a really good team is a confidence booster. I really like Ryan Doumit, our Catcher, who is rehabbing a broken ankle, but this Micheal Mchenry is a keeper. A catcher who can play defense, I don't remember the last one....don't say Kendall, many base runners ran successfully off of him. They don't mess with Mchenry's accurate arm. He'll catch them at first too. His hitting has to pick up some, and more time in the majors should help him. I say this alot and I'll say it again, baseball to me, is mostly pitching and catching~the battery~....I'm loving on you Mike!
So, no one has asked me what a jolly roger is? I'm guessing you've all googled it, or IGNORED it!:shocking:
Jolly Roger the pirate flag right?
The Bosox are doing weird things. They are notorious for their August meltdowns. I think we are seeing hints of one coming.
We are struggling in our series with KC. I mean really, its KC, this shouldnt be THAT difficult. But we are making it look so. At least we are hitting and scoring tonight. And havent mistimed a steal of home yet - what were you thinking there Reddick.
The Pirates are doing great! Nice to see them and their fans enjoying the game again!

LOL, it's quickly becoming the Pirate flag.....it's a skull and cross bones
on a black flag.....
On the last last home stand (the cardninals) I saw 4 guys in a canoe paddling towards PNC park dressed as Pirates .....3 were actually paddeling
(they wern't even rowing) and one PIRATE if you will, was standing up
holding the Jolly Roger into the breeze.........those were fan's. In that heat, to be dressed like that. It was good to see......canoe was junk, I hope it didn't sink on them.

Admitted he was *overpaid* batting 217 with 17 errors....for 5 million dollars. Personally, I thought they should have sent him to the minors to finish out the year, but I'm sure the contract had some kind of language that prohibited it.
Welcome Derrick Lee. We also got some one from The Giants???

I dont think you got anyone from the Giants, Yellow. The Giants did pick up quite a few people tho - Beltran, Cabrara, and a couple of others I cant remember.
Aside from the utility infielder who cant hit, we picked up Bedard, a left handed pitcher who spends more time on the disabled list than active. He is supposed to bolster our injured staff. :twitch: Sometimes, I have to wonder what Theo Epstein is thinking when he makes these moves.

Yeah, baseball takes on a whole different meaning when you are winning and in the thick of things. I would love to see the Pirates in the world series. I still remember Mazeroski winning the title for them back in 1960, rounding the bases with his hat off after hitting that home run. Some things you never forget.

And Keppenger is with SF now. neither have done much for us yet. In fact, we just lost 3 in a row- last night to the D-backs and now they are 1 game behind SF.
I'm sure that our trades will start contributing, but, we really have a problem with our bats overall. Lately, even our fantastic bullpen has been a bit off. Guess it could be the trade changes and adjusting.
Second in a home series against AZ tonight- I hope the hell SF gets it done! I have never thought we would repeat in the WS, but would take our division at least. Some of the younger players like Crawford will be blooming over the next couple of seasons, so I know good ball will prevail, but, SF has some work to do to get back up there.
It seems like other teams are just jelling more together than we are right now. Actually, I think we need to make a change with the batting coach.

It was *I* who said a slump, by any team in this division would sink them to the basement. Well, unfortunately...it's the pirates who are in a slump.
It's beyond awful. (on both sides of the ball) I've been a fan of the game long enough to know that baseball is streaky. I still say there is alot of baseball to be played, get the slump out of the way and get back to winning and being a contender.
It's been sell outs the last two nights. Who knows why, unless these tickets were bought way in advance. I call them bandwagon fans. They were booing loudly, and then laughing. After long innings, they'd give standing ovations for the third out and the same behavior for a third strike.
Last night the attraction was post game fireworks and a concert by Train (Trane?) so much for responsible drinking.
True, we played poorly, but the behavior of the people in the seats was boorish. I was embarrassed to be a real fan.
I still believe. Go Pirates!:pirate-steer:

Yellow,
Baseball is streaky unfortunately. The Padres have really come alive in this series - the Padres who couldnt hit worth a dime are teeing off on Pirate pitching. Makes me wonder if the youngins arms are getting tired. They had an awesome first half!
I'm hoping the Pirates will settle down and refocus. They are a young team with a lot of talent.
The Bosox are playing the Yanks this weekend. We are tied for the division lead right now. Some good stuff going on, tho I do hold my breath in August.
Power coming from places you never expected. Lackey took all the criticism of his overratedness to heart and is finally pitching decently.
Wonder if the Giants recovered from the free for all melee with the Phillies? That looked unpleasant.

SF is in a slump, too! We beat the Phillies yesterday, but after losing 8 straight!
Hummm... tonight we play your Pirates! I guess if SF loses to them, I can be a little happy that I know a Pirates fan that will be happy.
Betran has started to hit for us- so has Keppinger. But my favorite rookie (Crawford) is back at the minors because Fontenot is back from his injury and Keppinger is at 2nd and then there is Belt. Phooey!! But that's baseball! he'll be back!
Ugh, Beltran hurt his wrist yesterday and Huff pulled something. He has been in a hitting slump anyway- so maybe he ought to take a rest. And Nate the Great, usually very consistent has been really terrible with hitting.
Lincecum was brilliant yesterday against the Phillies- and I loved it as their manager put he and Cain down at the start of the series. Jerk. Timmy is a 2 time Cy Young winner and hit over a 1000 strike outs last month.
The game against the Pirates starts at 7.... I'll be watching!!

Thats 10p here. I'll be sound asleep by then. The Pirates need a pick me up in the worst of ways. They had a mini come back going yesterday in the bottom of the 8th, with no outs....two runners on board and Brandon Wood connected for I think his first home run of the season, making it 7 to 3. The meat of the line up was due up.....and three consecutive outs. They could hardly get themselves back onto the field. The game ended, and they had to leave to come to California and they just sat in the dug out.... The treatment they recieved from the fans, no one deserved. I guess we forgot they are people. I don't mean me, I never once booed, or stood and ovated an inning ending out. People screaming same old Buc's.
Pedro Alveres left 11 batters on base on friday with 4 inning ending double plays and every time he came up to bat (currently batting 198) they screamed you suck you suck. Imagine what that does to your confidence.
Well, I still believe. My Jolly Roger is just waiting for me to hang off of my balcony and wave it to passer by's. Even if it's just a dream.
Derreck Lee is feeling better. He'll be in the line up. Ryan Doumit is back too.

I should be in San Francisco!
----
Pirates beat the Giants last night. 5 to Nothing. Much better. Garrett Jones had a great Game. I was reading the re cap in the sports section.
---
Did you stay up all for the entire game At Last? Did Micheal McHenry
(our little 5'7 catcher) catch any of the Giants standing too far from the bag? I get so psyched up when he nails them with that rifle arm of his. At home, when he does that, and he does it alot....the organ player plays the theme from pink panther.....
Hey talk about a Cinderella story....that would be Micheal. He gets an opportunity to play in the majors because both of our catchers went down with injuries with in two days of each other, at the same time our WONDERFUL minor league prospect catcher got beaned and broke his jaw....and the Sox gave us Micheal...and he gets to play every day, and turns into something special....
sending some more good ju ju to San Fran, since I couldn't be there!
I believe.

Yes, damn it, you should be here! Oh, yes, I watched the entire game- I really am a baseball fanatic and even while losing, I'm thinking about what needs to happen during the next game.
Yes, Micheal is very special- have to agree. Wish we had him after Posey got hurt. Whiteside makes some awful mental errors while catching (although last night, he made some great defensive plays) and other than Stewart's arm, I don't see him as great catcher material.
Actually, Pittsburgh has some fantastic talent.
OK, I will admit that it did feel pretty good to see the Pirates break their 10 game losing streak- but damn, SF had just broken our 8 game losing streak!!! Both Colorado and Az lost, so we are OK. But, SF has got to get going offensively.

Greetings from Pittsburgh At Last....are you at the game? WE should be there
The very last thing I heard before I went to sleep last night was Bumgarner was pitching for the Giants. I had a sinking feeling. Woke up this morning, after dreaming about snow....only to here 15 seconds of baseball on the news, (i/e we've fallen off the radar, we lost again)
------
I arrive at work a few hours later, after i worked out and stuff.....and my Boss said to me "Oh, I thought you took today off to go to a Pirate game....what time is the game?" [me] 3:00p our time..........> right over her head. [her] Good!, you can help me draft this discovery until it's time to go. [me] Discovery? will that be before dark? [her] before Labor day I hope..... DAMN WORKAHOLIC!
As I am typing this, she just had a significant interruption, so I am keeping myself occupied and I tapped in on her smart phone to see we are winning 4 to 1. She has sports tap as an app on her phone! (mmm, thinking maybe I loaded that). I'm still in my bicycle to work clothes...no sense in changing, when she is writing Discovery, NO ONE see's me.....It's like theater. She always she didn't become an attorney to be an actress :vigil:
uugh, 4 to 2....you're clawing your way back.......

UGH... SF stunk!! Lately, it is like watching a whole different team! Frankly, we were winning more when some of the guys that were hurt were out and replaced by rookies.
Now, Beltran is out. So is Burrell and Freddie.. and Posey...
I want a new batting coach.....
The Pirates played somr great ball during this series- I think they will take their conference and then some! Nice to see actually- been a long time for them. Andrew McCutchin is one ball player!

Well, we are still loosing to the Brewers, and we need to be beating them. I think they've given up on the dream team....as I said we are getting 15 seconds of sports coverage. Also, the ball park is selling specials again to get fan's in......and they already announced an increase in ticket prices. But realistically, can you go to any major league game and sit in the cheap seats for $8.00, a little better for $10.00 and not too bad for $12.00?
I sit in club seats and they sell for $58.00.....but I don't pay $58.....huge discount to season ticket holders, but really.....isn't that extremely affordable and I don't care if we've been the worst team in baseball for 18 years.....(hell, parking can be $25.00) of course, we ride bicycles. FREE!

I always find August to be crazy in baseball. The post-trade struggles to jell together and the (hopefully) injured players getting back always seem to have August in a mess. Teams know that the race to the play-offs is on for real.
I am not seeing the teamwork right now in SF. Just a lot of trying to figure a way to merge talent to try and make-up for deficits. What is making me nuts are the veteran players taking pitches like rookies!
SF won yesterday and drove in 5 runs- whew! But, we shall see............ today they start a series in Atlanta.

I was watching a sports talk show and they have mathmatically decided it's impossible for us now, and we will loose 90 to 95 games again. I keep meaning to look this up and figure out if that was inflamatory. The Brew Crew swept us too.
I, for one, will be very happy to see those minor league players get back up here. That's how we were winning. They played with the same fire Micheal McHenry plays with each night. He snagged two again last night. One trying to steal second on him, The Second baseman was actually waiting on the runner, the ball was so precisely thrown, and another one was someone taking too big of a lead at first.
We have the WORST hitting in baseball. I know I talked about that earlier in the season. I don't know why this hitting coach still has his job. Where we were, and where we are. Wow. Just wow. The basement Bucs.
I'll keep going to the games and cheering them on. I can't help but think how dissapointing this is for the players.
They come home today (to rain)....hopefully its better than the last homestand.
August baseball always makes me crazy. The BoSox just dropped 2 of 3 to Seattle. We play 3 in 2 days with Tampa Bay and then the Yanks come to town. :twitch:
The Blue Jays are surging out of nowhere. The White Sox are making a run for it. The White Sox? Really?
It's August. :seeingstars: Let the fun begin.

Hey, I have been wanting the SF batting coach outta' there for a long time. Our respective teams must be the worst in the league offensively. Makes me crazy!!! But, I am forever a Giants fan- had many more years of them losing than winning and stuck with them. Right now, I don't recognize them! :pirate-steer:are in a three game series with the Cardnials, then the Reds then the brewers. We have to win them all. Thats who is ahead of us in the division. Ryan Doumit caught the game last night, Micheal Mchenry is a better catcher, but Ryan has that bat, and he's good on both sides of the dish. He went four for four with a go ahead home run. I've always liked him because he's a scrapper. He's been on the trading block for two years now, and I wish they'd just trade him and let him get on with his career. He'd do well in the AL as a DH.....there is some talk of converting him to a firstbaseman. So Derek Lee, who was hit by a pitch in the second game he played for us, it's finally been determined he has a broken wrist. UUUGH.
I'm like you At Last, I cheer for what ever is on the field. Three more week end home series.....6 more weeks of regular play. Fast season when you're having fun. We are currently 56-63.....well, we only won 56 games all last season....so that comment by the sportscaster was inflamatory. Someday I'll learn, they are not fans. Pirates beat the Cards again in extra innings. Garrett Jones hit a walk off home run into the river!... Garrett has a good bat but for some reason, they kept playing Overpaid instead of Jones. Now Atlast, I know you got a sneak peak of Andrew McCutchen....we know how talented he is here in the Burgh. Apparently this is what the sports writers in St louis wanted to talk about.....In the top of the 11th, 2 outs and a runner on first, Albert Pujols comes up to bat, Pirates had a slight pull to the right on Pujols, and Pujols hits it to left center. McCutchen being McCutchen, got on his horse and ran the ball down, just shagged it as if it was a routine catch, no dive and ran it in. Pujols slammed his batting helmet to the ground. It wasn't a pretty win, we left runners on base in 9th and 10th innings and struck out 10 times.....but we've taken two of three from the cards...Maybe a sweep tonight......Not many balls have been hit into the river....this is the Pirate parrott waving the jolly roger:pirate-steer:NhsO7XqrOBE

Love this! Yes, A. McCutchen was thrilling to watch! Pure athleticism and smarts!
Th Giants lost another heartbreaker last night again to Atlanta. over half of our starting team is out on injuries1 Both the trade players, Keppinger & Baltran are hurt. Burrill, Nate the Great, F Sanchez are out, too. I think Sandovol broke his foot now, too. I haven't been able to take a look yet.
I think SF is out, way out of contention for even our conference now. Damn!
Glad to hear the Jolly Rogers are turning things around.
The Sox are messin up again. We are on the way to losing 2 of 3 with Tampa Bay. Then head to KC - who mopped the floor with us the last time, then to Texas who usually mops the floor with us anytime, then Oakland where we stand a chance before the Yankees show down.
The good news is, we turned an around the horn triple play yesterday. It was the first triple for us in 17 years and the first around the horn since 1954. A bright spot in an otherwise yucky series.

No... gotta keep the kayaks out! Oh, how I miss mine- I long to go in McCovey Cove in it!!
LOL, yes, we have winter here. And actually fairly cool summers- lots of fog where I live (near the Bay). It can get very cold in winter and it is very damp. Not a good thing for my old joints! It has snowed here, but that is very unusual.
Now, I grew up in my teen years in the Lake Tahoe area in the El Dorado mountain range. YES it snows there!!! really snows there! Actually, there are many snow areas in CA.
Atlanta is smacking the hell out of my guys. Hummm... Philly cooling down, eh?
I just don't really see SF back in the WS, no repeat. We are so beat-up right now and out of sync, I am just hoping for them to get back in 1st place. But the Dbacks have been playing very good ball. We have been chasing them for over a week now- we were in 1st most of the season!!!

So yes, those Braves are making a sneak attack! This may be an interesting finish. Oh, a statistic I just pulled off the 6 oclock news. PNC park has been open 10 years now. Garrett Jones is the only Pirate to hit the ball into the river...and he has done it twice. He did it on opening day last year. I was trying to get a film clip of the Mc cutchen catch. If we had a designated runner position for designated hitters.......I'm kidding.....kind of. LOL.

SF lost another one last night to the Astros....
The team is a mess! Both of the players we got in trades for offense have been injured as well as key players along with zero hitting by who is left!! So damn frustrating!!!
I so hear you with what has happened with your Pirates!
And Kobe's team is dealing with the same mess.... it is going to be a long August!
I so agree with heartfelt fan support for teams without arrogant, egotistical players. One of the reasons my Giants made me so proud last season. Watching guys that are scrappers in baseball that work together is so much a part of why I love baseball. This still exists in the game with certain teams.
I think two of my nephews are going to go to one more game with me in September- gotta yak with them today to set it up. Eve with what is going on with SF, tix sell out for any home game right off. Want to see them play Az at the yard.

But the Dback keep losing too- so we are still with 2 of 1st place. But, my guys have got to get those bats going!!!
I realized tonight that last August was rough for SF too- and Tim Lincecum was in an awful slump. Maybe there is hope afterall. They ended up taking the WS. But this is not the same team even though many of the same players are still with the club. So many of them are injured and not playing. And new guys do have some talent, but it just seem like they are in that groove with each other- the chemistry isn't there. But they could begin to jell.
I want Crawford to be called back up!!! And if Pablo Sandoval doesn't stop trying too damn hard to hit homers, I am going to go over to SF and bop him! hey, plain old base hits are just fine- just get on!!!
We shall see tomorrow- 3rd of the series at Houston. Then they come home.

Yeah- Beltran played a few games, then ka-put!! Keppinger was hurt and out for a week. He's back as of yesterday.
Between Posey and Freddie Sanchez both being out all season it is obvious that key players that seem to just give the team spirit is lacking. The Giants don't really have the super star kinds of players but I think some of our guys on the DL really contribute with their personalities. Although, they are consistant hitters, too. Not big home run hitters, but get on and are smart while on.
Damn, both Posey & Sanchez have serious injuries- but Sanchez will play again. Who knows with Posey. Long road ahead of him.
Madison Bumgarner had a lousy day on the mound today.

For the love of baseball
Friday, Pirates vs Reds...important that Pgh win all three games 8 below .500 and 13 behind first place (looking bleek)
A Series of horrible storms before the game, put us into a rain delay before the game started. (game should have been cancelled, at some point they have to consider player safety, playing on SOAKED outfield grass) Three lead changes, lots of hits. But the pirates did what they usually do...leave 11 men stranded on base. Consequently, loose the game in the 9th.
Saturday was moved up to a 4 o'clock start time for nationally televised game. Pirates had 13 hits, struck out 10 times and left 14 players stranded on base. However, managed to *scrap* out a win. Unbelievable how they do not quit. Some of the plays they made got them standing ovations...the potential is there. The Boo birds weren't at this game. (too early, the drunks weren't here) Familys were. At the end of the game, when mass exodus usually occurs, people stood and cheered....as if we had won a game to clench a championship. The player responded by taking there caps off as they left the field and waving to the fans.....it was nice to see fans show some love.
Today, the rubber match. And rain forcasted for most of the day. Monday, is a double header with the brewers due to a rain cancellation
An afternoon game, and an evening game.....WE MUST BEAT THE BREWERS.....and another afternoon game Wednesday with the brewers. I love afternoon baseball, and have taken both days off from work.
I'm sure this will be a long day at the ball park, they'll do everything they can to get this game in.
My Tigers pounded on the Indians last night, 10-1. We are 3.5 games up in the AL Central. Let's hope the Tigers don't do the usual late August/September meltdown, and actually make the playoffs. Crossing my fingers the rotation can hold up, even though it has a couple of weak links.

Nice post Hack, as it warms my heart. I love Jim Leyland and Gene Lamont.
And I love what both the Tigers and my second favorite team in all of baseball, the Indians have done. The Indians are very much like the Pirates, no big names,no outrageous salaries, come to the ballpark every day and play for the love of the game. I'm so happy they are having a very successful year.
For years, the ownership of the Pirates have been threatening us with taking the franchise and leaving Pittsburgh. I always had the Indians in my back pocket.
As I perused the divisions this morning, again, trying to figure out if the Pirates really are out of contention.....In every division, it could be anyones to take. It's real close right now. It's been a good baseball year.

After watching Detroit when SF played them during interleague play- I came away with the feeling that they might do very well. I can see them going all the way to the WS, actually. Yes, the August/September meltdown always is lurking! makes me crazy- and the injuries that teams deal with at this time of the season.

After watching that epic melt down of a baseball manager clip a few posts ago, I realized something today. Clint Hurdle was thrown out of the game again today, as he was on friday, by the same umpire, Brian Knight. Note: including these two tosses, Hurdle has only been tossed 4 times all season. But both times, Umpire Knight turned his back to Hurdle while Hurdle was *talking* to him. To me, thats almost baiting.
Now, I will say, I never understood why a manager ever argues, because nothing in baseball ever gets overturned.....instant replay showed the umpire missed the call (heard that from the radio side) PNC park will not show a controversial call, on replay. I know they[managers] do it to back the players. This was a rap John Russell endured, he didn't argue.
So, we let another slip away in the 9th. Pirates loose to the Reds 5 to 4.
Brandon woods, the worst batter in baseball (known fact!) he does have an excellent glove, struck out three times, and with a runner on third and two outs....we let him bat???? He bounced out to the infield ending the game......and the BOOOO BIRDS sang loudly. Sometimes I understand why.:seeingstars:
Double header tomorrow with the Brew Crew.

Ya' can't take in your own food or drinks anymore (used to be able to when I was a kid), but I have gotten some small bags of peanuts in. I always eat before going. Why the hell people can't bring bottled water in is beyond me. Iused to think going to a ballgame was fairly cheap entertainment. No!!

WOW, 35 games! I am impressed- you are a baseball fanatics dream!!! Damn, we gotta get together for a game either here or back there someday. A rare double header today. They just don't happen any more unless it's a

And yes, IN THOSE DAYS (lol) you could take in a lunch and some unopened plastic bottles or juice boxes. I also make sure I eat before I go.....can you see me walking up to a concession stand and saying *I'll have that salad, will you throw it into a blender with some flax seed and B pollen and make me a green smoothie*:seeingstars:

Finally.....the Pirates beat The Brewers. First time in two years!
They beat us in the first game and really were very obnoxious about it. I was shocked to see that.
Well, we exploded for 7 runs in the 7th, they couldn't do anythiing right! And we beat them 10 to 2. It was so effin cold (58) thats 40 degrees colder than its been, it felt like winter......when we were all dressed for August....so by the time we were kicking ass, maybe, M A Y B E 2,000
fans were left.....but we made noise. It was funny, maybe you had to be there....there was a person in every 15 seats or so, and one person started it, then every one started doing it, using the flash light feature on their smart phone and shining it around because it was like a ghost town.
OK, obviously, I was out screaming, in the cold too long......good night!

Well, when they break into every television show with a weather update, using words like storm of mamoth proportion, and no storm will ever be costlier...it gets your attention.
Our search and rescue teams are deploying for the Harrisburg area now, to await further instructions. Earth quake reverberations and a fierce hurricane with tornadoes mixed into it....all in one week.
I attended 6 major league games in 6 days (includes the double header)
I got home at midnight, got to sleep maybe 12:30 and was up for work at 4:30 for a 12 hour day and then off again for a day game. At least I got to see us beat those obnoxious brewers twice. 2-0 the last game, beat them with a minor league call up who never pitched in the majors before. YES!
So, I'm here to tell you, 6 games in 6 days, was too much. I was doing nothing but talking baseball. I was a walking baseball talk show. (ah, talk about obnoxious) Also, here comes my sexist post of the season. Men can not stand a woman who can talk a sport and know her stuff. Not that I was a little edgey at work Tuesday from no sleep and too much stimulation
5 games in 4 days, water cooler talk wasn't exactly friendly. And you know, not everyone loves the Pirates like I do. I'm sure they were happy to see I wasn't there Wednesday and no one mentioned baseball to me Thursday. I'm just starting to feel human again. I bicycled most of today and took a kayak class out. Some schools have gone back, but not all, so
there are still some vacation around.
I think the pirates will have another loosing season. Breaks my heart to say that. At least we won't loose 105 like last year, maybe just under 90.
The potential to be good is there. I see it in every game. I will be shocked, as I said before, if the hitting coach isn't left go. The owner said this year is about accountablility. Well, we are the worst offensive team in baseball.
I haven't heard *who* is on the trading list, why is that always a secret....I'm Hoping Ryan Doumit (as much as i like the scrapper) can get traded to an american league team as DH and an occasional catcher. He's got a great bat, and needs to hit every day.

When I was *living* at the ball park last week, some jerk was sitting in a season ticket holders seat. You know the kind.....faded give away t- shirt, with the name of a player
who we got rid of years ago, and the jerk is 50 pounds heavier than when he got the shirt. (the give away shirts come in one size XL). Ok. First inning, the pitcher gives up
a hit that Ronnie Cedeno dove for and didn't come up with,
so *Jerk* starts yelling *BOOOOOO, you suck* after the noise quiets down a little I stand up, turn around and scream *We don't BOO the home team*. I looked right at him.:|. I did, however, refrain from pointing at him. He never made another sound the rest of the game.

No way I will leave my Giants behind! Been rooting for them since 1958 though it all.
Actually, when we go through times like this, I get more into the games- the players are so frustrated with themselves.
This is the time of the season when I get more intense about watching other teams when I get their games that are in close races for first. That time of the season!!
It was so damn hard to see Lincecum out there yesterday- no run support and not on his game as usual- no room for error. And you could see how crappy the guys were feeling about another game that they just could not get even in scoring position.
Thinking a lot about the 9/1 call-ups-

I was worried about us going to Houston. You know, the bottom feeders. Having been the bottom feeders for 18 years, I'd prefer to think of the Astro's as the spoilers, after they just woooped the Giants butts.
I bicycled by the ball park on my way home last night, and they have new banners up with pictures of the minor league

Oh, how I would love to see our starters back!!
Yup, Houston smacked us around- and now the Cubs have taken 2 of 3!!! It is just awful!!! I hope SF wins today vs the Cubs... this is heartbreaking to watch!!
And this weekend we play the Dbacks who are 6 games ahead of SF and won their last 8 games. Very hot streak! Another team that has been in the cellar most of the time coming on strong. The way SF is playing, I think it is going to be a long and painful series. Now it isn't just the problems with the offense- a whole lot of sloppy play going on. Both Lincecum and Voglesong had mediocre games this series.
Beltran was booed yesterday with all of his strike-outs. Afterall, we got him to be a bat and took over his big contract- so it appears people are just frustrated as hell with him. Keppinger is finally doing some things with hits, but the rest of the guys need to be able to get on base before he hits!!!
Oh well.... yes, there is next year. Kind of funny, I am more glued to games right now because I keep thinking this spell will be broken. Can't be a fair weather fan.

Yup- you and Hunter are my kind of baseball people!! Damn, I gotta get some taping equipment! That is a great idea for winter viewing! I follow some college football and have a spot in my heart for the Steelers (mainly because of memories of my Dad and watching them with him), but, baseball is my game.
Thinking as we go through September- the Dbacks might very well be a major force in the play-offs as a team with a lot of spirited scrappiness! Might be some good coverage of their history. LOL, if my guys are not in, I do temd to go for underdogs. Yet, for the AL, I do have another soft spot for the Red Sox.
OK, I am getting excited about October- and play-off ball. No matter the teams that get in, it is always some damn fine baseball being played. It will be fun to have fans here that might have their team in it all- will make my play-off and WS experience more fun.

I know, weird timing. Guess it is due to all the "rules" about this stuff. Kinda sux with Rowand as he was part of the WS team, but he has just not been performing. Tejada's situation is more about just having quite a few guys in the positions he plays coming up through the farm system that are showing better offensive stats.
Oh yes, September schedules... we start the series vs Dbacks tomorrow here and they are playing way hot! On a mission, they are! We are 5 behind them.
SF took the last game with the Cubs yesterday and Keppinger is looking like he is coming alive- the Panda and he knocked solo homers back to back. But, as much as I love my team, I don't see them back in first place. Something is just not meshing with them as a team. Maybe all the injuries just took too much of a toll on keeping them in sync. But, I could be wrong- they were 6 back at this very time last year.
These guys can be scrappers out there. Actually, I love it when teams that don't have flashy players just get out there and grind it out. The Dbacks have some of this kind of stuff, too. Pirates are another teams like that- and I never count the Red Sox out and love it when they beat NY.
I gotta check out what is going on with Detroit-

The pirates record for August was 8 and 22. :readfineprint:
They had a late afternoon game (rain out/make up one game) and came to pgh via houston and onto Chicago.
Clearly, they have been awful. Since there was a televised Steeler game, I suspected, in lieu of the steadily declining popularity (again) of baseball
attendance would be low. I called my ticket Rep and asked him if they were discounting any tickets for the game...he said *No, why?* I said
Hey...you're not exactly rocking the house....and we are not going to leave work early, give you $110.00 and well....NEVER MIND!
Heard on the news, less than 4,000 fans came to the game. Seriously.
Could you pay your grounds crew with that money?
We have 4 more games in our ticket plan, I think it's going to be an empty ball park again. How anti climatic.

The NLB has a page...who doesn't. Even I have a page. Anyhow, The NLB
page, each team has a sub page, so then it's the Pirates page. Ok, I just didn't want you thinking I was on FAKE BOOK. Well, pages and pages
and pages of unhappy Pirate fans. While the team has imploded, they announced they are raising ticket prices. I was all in favor of that. You can sit in the bleacher seats for $9.00, and right and left field, you know...way out there, for $10. Not bad seats for $10.00
Let me see if I can explain this. My season ticket package came yesterday. Season tickets, or half season or quarter season, is the way to go....if you are a fan. The savings is substantial. Well, now the pricing is not going to be bleacher seats, Rt. Field, Left Field. It's going to be all about the view. Every year that you are a season ticket holder, you are
given a chance to bid better. You can't get better (in my opinion) than my seats. Took me 10 years to get here. I am right behind home plate, two tiers up. Perfect for me, because i love to watch the pitching and the catching. With my little binoculars, I can see the black rubber around home plate. I'm such a nerd. So, looking at this price sheet....my ticket, and the view, will cost me $30.00 a ticket more. But then it goes on to say....significant price difference to renewal season ticket holders. But no invoice. I guess I'm supposed to become numb before the invoice and better bid sheet comes. When I heard ticket price increase, I thought oh, $5.00 across the table or something. We have not had an increase in 10 years.
So back to this Pirate page. Fans are calling for a total boycott. That's extreme. I have to tell you what Ryan Doumit (the scrappy catcher) did. I saw this on Sports Clips or something A. was watching. Runner on first. Pitcher throws a past ball. Doumit takes his good old time going to get it (it looked like he forgot
there was a runner on) he actually walked to the ball, didn't even whip off his face mask...then picked the ball up...the runner was on his way to third. All of a sudden Doumit looked at third, and here comes the runner
safe. no throw. Whats that??? I couldn't help but wonder if he was dissappointed no one took him from the trading block?
Good thing we live blocks from the ball park. I refuse to pay 20.00 to park a car. oH HECK, YOU KNOW ME....i REFUSE TO DRIVE A CAR!

and pages of unhappy Pirate fans.
Bleacher seats for 10 bucks? Wow...theyre like 50 bucks at Yankee Stadium, plus a kidney donation to park. But, the Yanks did just scrape into first place last night.
I don't care what the reason is, Doumit should be fined by the coach. I love baseball, but, there is no reason to slack off even if your team is bad. Youre still playing BALL for a living! Any crap day on a shitty MLB ball team is 10 times better than the best day at my job. Any AAA player would love to get that job. Man. I was shocked when you posted that. That behavior is such a slap in the face to sooo many people...fans, players, teammates, working stiffs...crazy. :(

Yes Hunter, they (the Pirate Organization) were very quick to point out the prices of the tickets at your ball ball park, the Bo sox, The Giants and the Brewers. This enraged the Pirate fans even more.....NO TEAM in baseball histrory has had a loosing record for 19 straight seasons and is
still around. The Pirate Organization was smart enough to Thank the season ticket holders for sticking with them, hell or high water, (we have a
fairly substantial fan base) Steelers #1, Penguins #2....both teams sell out every home game and then the Pirates. Now....even with $9.00 and $10.00
seats almost always available (even as season tickets) we still do not get people to go to the games because well, people, (in general) are tired of loosing. The team reportedly made 30 million dollars last year, with horrible attendance and the lowest payroll in MLB. (and lost 105 games). Ownership disputes that figure. Ownershio owns newspapers. So...I don't know. Show us the pricing of a mediocre team I guess.
And as for Ryan Doumit. Our team manager has a proven track record of
punishing players who minutely give the apperance of being a slacker. Andrew McCutchen is no exception. He failed to run out....all the way to first, an infield pop up to the catcher. And spent two days on the bench
(newspsper said he was fined two days of salary) Clint Hurdle said *we don't discuss discipline* We have a minor league catcher the Bo Sox gave us for cheap, Micheal Mchenry, who turned into an absolute sensation. The first defensive catcher we have had, ever since I can remember.....
Doumit is what critics call a terrible catcher. He lacks finess. Things like, his unprotected hand is always injured from foul balls (every year a broken bone or two) because he lacks the self discipline to put it behind his back
while recieving the ball. His throw out % is 28%. Micheal Mchenry is in the high 90's. Few will even try to run on him now. Not to mention how at least once a game, he catches some one AT ANY BASE, leading off too far
and makes that throw as if he was tossing back to the pitcher.
I have always been a fan of Ryan Doumit, but was very soured on what
I saw. Even sorrier for HIM, that it was broadcast on a sports channel. He may find himself in the minors or out of baseball next year. Passive Aggressive I think. Oh, one more thing....on a low payroll team...he makes 5 million dollars. They called up a catcher from the minors, I think the Pirates are done show caseing Doumit.
