No 2007 hat? Too soon after 04?

A 2013 hat would really hit the spot.

What a melt down for the Cards. It's a good thing they can only lose 1 game out of this. The only good thing was Beltran's catch in right field and he hurt a rib. :|

Everything is true to form so far, every team I have rooted for this playoff season has lost, lol.

That's ok.

Number of World Championships:

Yankees 27
Cardinals 11
Red Sox 7

Hah!

My teams are the Oakland A's (from childhood) and NY Yankees (lived in NY state for 10 years), and I am warming up to the Braves now that I am in the South. However, I actually do root for the Red Sox sometimes, lol, so you are not always safe. Oh god I still remember screaming at the tv for them to take Buckner out against the Mets. True story.

I think this curse is just this year though. My A's and Yanks have won several World Series with me cheering them on.

The Cardinals did prove one thing tonight.....shoddy fielding will come back to bite you in the ass. When that ball dropped between Wainright and Molinda even the cat was like wtf???

Beltran robbing Ortiz of that grand slam was awesome tho. Hope he is ok. He hit that bullpen wall awfully hard.

I'm from New England originally...so yeah, I love that dirty water.

The Sox were amazing last night - they made St. Louis pay for every single mistake they made...just as they did to Detroit and Tampa.

Much of their success is because the Red Sox have a very well balanced team - every bat in the lineup can do damage, every pitcher can have a great game, and their base running is the best in baseball.

It's just Game One, though. Don't light those cigars, pop the champagne, or look for the Duck Boats yet.

Glad to hear Beltran's xrays and ct scan were negative. Hopefully he will be day to day and not need to be replaced on the roster. He wields a potent bat in the Cards line up.

Besides, the poor guy has waited 16 years to make it to a World Series. He deserves more than an inning appearance. That was one freakin awesome catch tho.

GeeGina, no need to worry about Red Sox fans counting their chickens before they hatch. We have been thru too many late season meltdowns, chicken and beer fiasco's, Bill Buckner and Bucky Dent. Until it hits the record books, we pretty much hold our collective breaths. :)

Well, tonight was Boston's opportunity to demonstrate how slopping fielding will come back to bite you in the ass.

Maybe now John Farrell will consider using Daniel Nava, the eighth leading hitter in the league, over Johnny Gomes?

The look on Craig Breslow's face summed it up for me:

It's like they are holding auditions to see who will be the Bill Buckner of the 2013 World Series.

The Sox better plug the holes in their defense. And wake up those bats. They are not on an even pitching playing field with the Cardinals. They have to rely on their strengths. It's not the time to let the 2nd worse team at stealing bases pull double steals on you.

The teams are rather evenly matched it's just that their strengths and weaknesses are in different areas of the game. The team who takes the World Series will be the team who finds a way to ramp up their strengths and cover up their weaknesses.

Last night that wasn't the Red Sox.

Lackey did pretty good balancing the pitching game even though arguably he was not the superior pitcher, but their strengths all but disappeared.

So has anyone heard if Big Papi is going to play 1st base in St. Louis? There is no DH in the National League parks. I agree that defense is critical, but there is no way I would leave him out of the lineup.

I think St. Louis definitely has the edge in pitching, Boston in big money players who come through in the clutch. It should be interesting.

Good question BullDog. The media here seems to be avoiding asking or even speculating on who is going to be sitting out in the national league park games.

Both Napoli and Ortiz have had super play off stats so sitting either of them is a problem. Napoli is a catcher by trade and there is some talk of putting him behind the plate. But, he is unfamiliar with the pitchers and "out of practice" at the position which could cause problems in and of itself.

I cant remember the last time Ortiz played in the field. He wasn't that good at first to begin with.

It will be interesting to see the line up tomorrow.

BullDog
10-25-2013, 11:23 AM
I did just read an article in the Washington Post that quoted Farrell as saying that Ortiz would likely be at first on Friday, and that they would take it from there. It also said he wouldn't put Napoli behind the plate. That is probably the most likely scenario. Napoli has been great in the playoffs too, so it hurts for the Sox to not have both of them in the lineup. They will have a really good pinch hitter to bring in. The article also said Ortiz only played 6 games at first this year. If needed, Game 6 and 7 will be back in Boston, so that's good news for them because they will go back to the DH in those games.

It was great to see Mo Rivera and his family at Fenway last night!

I have always thought the National League has a slight advantage in the World's Series because of the use of, dependency on, the DH or lack there of by the American League. But that's baseball and there are always shifting advantages in any game or series.

It isn't that 2007 wasn't special.

2004 was just freakin awesome. To be one out away from being swept by the Yanks in the division playoffs, to winning an unprecedented 4 straight to eliminate the Yanks, to sweeping the Cards.....it was just special. 86 years worth of special.

2007 didnt have the same impact. Or the history. BTW, I did have a hat. It got blown off my head by an unexpected gust of wind while in the middle of the Atlantic. If it had been my 2004 hat, I would have jumped in after it. LOL.

To be fair, prior to 2004, some people had been waiting from 1918 to say that ... the curse of the Bambino :)

I'm glad to see the Cardinals leading at this stage. The first ever item of baseball memorabilia that I purchased, about 15 years ago, was the Cardinal's program from the 1931 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics. I bought it simply due to its beautiful cover which had the Cardinals' logo and an illustration of the Spirit of St Louis (Charles Lindberg's plane on the front).

So, for that fairly random reason alone, I've always had a soft spot for the Cardinals. Combined with my distaste of the Red Sox, I'm certainly hoping the Cardinals win their third World Series in eight years.

No Red Sox fan is ever going to like that obstruction call, (we would have loved one in game 3 of the 1975 World Series against the Reds, when Ed Armbrister's obstruction of Carlton Fisk was a no call) but that wasn’t why the Sox lost.

For the second straight game Saltalamacchia, threw a ball away from home plate to third base. And he shouldn’t have even been in the game at that point. When Farrell brought in Workman in the bottom of the 8th instead of putting him in the ninth spot in the order he should have put Ross in for Saltalamacchia in the ninth spot. It would have pushed the pitcher’s slot 7 spots further. Even given that stupid mistake, Workman should never had batted in the ninth, Napoli should have. It was shitty defense coupled with poor game management that lost the game, not the obstruction call. Oh and where the hell did the Red Sox’s offense go? I mean I get that the Cards have good pitching, but still, the Red Sox offense has left the ball park.

Agreed. You cannot bat your pitcher in the top of the 9th. You have to play for the win, especially when you are on the road.

It's easy to second guess a manager after the game is over, but I do think Farrell made some serious blunders. He not only had his pitcher hit in the 9th, it was his first major league at bat! Farrell said he needed him to go deeper into the game, but he only faced 1 or 2 batters in the 9th. I guess he thinks he will have the top of his batting order coming up in the top of the 10th but you have to get to the 10th inning first. You cannot play for the tie in the 9th inning when you are the visiting team.

Also, I strongly think they should have walked Jay intentionally and pitched to Kozma. This is something Tim McCarver brought up immediately on the broadcast, and I agreed with him. When Jay came up it was runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. If you walk Jay, not only do you get a weaker hitter in Kozma, more importantly the bases are loaded with a force play at any base. You don't even have to tag Molina at home. You give yourself a much better opportunity for a double play to end the ending and/or a force play at home to preserve the tie.

i always get sentimental when it gets down to 1 game. season or world series. this could be it. for some players, this will be their last game. i know what that feels like, although not on a professional level. i still want to play. i miss it.

one thing i've noticed is the strike zone. i don't feel the men in blue are consistent. at least not to my likely. but i'm not in the batters box, ... i can't get thrown out of the game for complaining with cuss words included. dagnabbit!

I think they have been doing okay. I mean it's always a judgment call and most of the time when they show it on the screen mostly they get it right. But they get it wrong sometimes. I haven't noticed that they get it more wrong for one team over the other. Although I have noticed that the Cardinal batters spend a good deal of time whining about the calls.

You should watch. That's the only superstition I never agree with. It has to be considered a coincidence when that happens. I mean if people start getting it in their heads that their team does better when they don't watch them it won't be long before they don't have a team. Hey maybe that's what happen to the Expos. All the Quebeckers and the Québécois decided their team did better when they weren't watching. Now they can watch them in DC.

This is Montreal checking in and when we watch Boston (providing we are not in a lucky corn nut loop) we eat smoked meat sandwiches and poutine.

Everything here is served with french fries. Even KFC which is called PFK (Poulet Frit Kentucky) is served with fries. I never cared that much for french fries. I was a mashed potato kind of butch. However i have to say i never really tasted french fries until I got here. Fantastic. And everybody makes the greatest fries. Yay Red Sox.

And cheers to the Boston faithful. You deserve this. Hell I deserve it. I just wish I could have seen it at Fenway where I spent so many lazy summer nights over the years hoping maybe this would be the season.

Well this IS the year. And it only took 95 years.

Now, can we please shave off those hideous beards?

Considering how superstitious us sports fans are, is anyone else wondering if Tick is ever going to wash those Boston briefs and socks again? :cheesy:

Yankees lost their opener for like the 4th year in a row. Argh, it's hard for me to get excited about them, but I will stay true.

JDeere, I was too tired to stay up and watch the Giants, but I see they won. Congrats!

AnotherButch, I watched the Cards on Sunday night and they looked good.

Loved hearing the Cubbies were moving on to the NLDS. Theo Epstein has done another admirable job getting the players they needed to make them contenders. Hoping his magic will bring the Cubs a world series victory, just as he did for the Red Sox.

Would love to see the Cubs vs the Astros in the World Series.

You ever read novels by Chaim Potok? In particular, The Chosen? I ask, because it's been a favorite book to read, since I was in high school. It's about two young boys, who are each other's rival. They both love baseball. They both live in The Bronx and both come from rival Jewish sects.

In many ways, you remind me of one protagonist in the story, Danny Saunders. I hope you see that as a compliment because it's a compliment from my heart of hearts. I liked Danny very much in this story. :balloon:

Tonights match up is Wood against Morton. I know both pitchers from my fantasy teams. Woods had a fantastic season, tho he was less effective the last month or so. The team I like in Arizona (Diamondbacks) couldn’t pull it together to win against the team from Texas (Rangers).

But I have a feeling that the Diamondbacks will be better next year.

I read recently that Shohei is now married to his long time girlfriend who is a massive women’s basketball star from Japan. They are so cute! ☺️

I’m not sure who I plan to root for this year but I came across a nice article on the Cincinnati Reds baseball club. See link below ☺️

We support our local high school team and this year they hope to remain the top contenders for a third state championship title. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

We are rooting for the Baltimore Orioles.

Adley, the catcher on this team, is from a rural area close to the PDX metro area. Adley gives back to local high schools in our area by conducting baseball clinics for rural high school young men in area leagues of competition. He is a very nice person. Adley got his big break into MLB when he played for the Oregon State Beavers in college. Which, btw, the OSU Beavers are tops in their league this season.

Braves' pitcher Max Fried gave one of the best performances of his life tonight. He pitched 9 innings (92 pitches/69 strikes) and shutout the Miami Marlins 5 - 0.

Last night, Ronald Acuna Jr. set a record for stolen bases for the modern-era (Atlanta) Braves. He has now stolen 190 bases.

Last night we went to watch (and support) our local high school baseball team. The past two years our team has won the state championship title, so we’re hoping for a third title. But back to last night, lol: our team struggled to get on the board. We watched the other team heckle and jeer on their teammates to out-best our team, which was taking a toll on our team. Bullying is not an acceptable team tactic, so our team finally got on the scoreboard by the sixth inning. It was scary, watching them bully our team. But the boys on our team did not participate in their brand of cheer. They demonstrated leadership in the sportsmanship department, which of course made us super proud of them.

We won the game by six point lead in the top of the 7th inning. :cheer:

Hopefully our team does well against the competing team from a rich neighborhood. Sometimes it’s better to get off to a late start. At least it was like this last night. Three cheers for teams who practice good sportsmanship.

I agree wholeheartedly! I don't understand fans like the Phillies have. What's fun about going to a ballgame and being such a**holes? I would so much rather cheer on our team at a ballgame.

So because Xfinity and Bally Sports can't come to an agreement - and Bally Sports is probably going into bankruptcy - we can't watch the Braves on Bally Sports. And because of blackout rules, we can't watch on MLB.

To rub salt in the wound, I have to follow some damn QR code on Xfinity to request a refund for Bally Sports. They damn well know I pay for it every month; why can't they just refund it?

In other news, Shohei Ohtani is the DH for the Dodgers for this entire season; why isn't he pitching?

Man, I just gotta show some love for the MLB team we’ve been following this year. They just finished playing against the White Sox (shout out to Crochet who is a great pitcher), but man!! lol, some of our birds are just freaking amazing: Colton Cowzer (fielder), Gunnar Henderson (short stop), Adley Rutschman (catcher) and five awesome pitchers who share the team’s burden to win, win, win: Albert Suarez (used to be with the AZ Diamondbacks), Corbin Burnes, Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer, and Grayson Rodriguez … such awesome pitchers who are extremely talented!

Keep up the good work, Birdland!

I’m feeling the magic, each and every game…

Go Orioles❣️❣️❣️

We just bought tickets to a Ray's game! We have been talking about going for some time. Now that I'm home, we decided!

Tonight, under my carport, drinking a beer, we found a game that will work with our schedule. We laughed, we didnt even care where we sat. She says, we will just walk around..lol
I'm like yeah, we can go there and over there.

I can hardly wait!oh and our baseball field is enclosed. Who cares how hot it will be..lol

At least you won't be sitting in the direct sun, and those afternoon Florida showers won't get you. I've wanted to go to a Rays game - they're my second favorite team after the Braves. Apparently there are some additional rules because it's an enclosed field. Like, I think if a batter hits the ball and it hits the ceiling, it's an automatic home run. Or something like that. Give us a report when you get back, please!?

Did you know that Gunnar Henderson played baseball at Auburn; he’s from Alabama ( I just learned). And, oh boy, Kyle Braddish pitches a great game!

I’ve got my fingers crossed for them the rest of the season! I hope to see them play against the Seattle Mariners on July 4th.

Interesting...this is what I found out:

Batted ball that strikes either of the lower two catwalks (known as the 'C-Ring' and the 'D-Ring'), including any lights or suspended objects attached to either of those catwalks as well as any angled support rods that connect the 'C-Ring' to the masts that support the 'D-Ring' in fair territory: Home Run.

If it goes straight up, it could be an out if caught. Pop fly ball. It has certain perimeters it has to make to be a home run.

I think the Braves are depressed. So many of their star players are on the IL. They can't get a run to save their lives, except for Marcell Ozuna, and you can't win a baseball game with only one productive batter.

Have you all seen the Capital One commercial with the "Peaches" (actors) playing a scene from A League of their Own? "There's no crying in baseball!" Apparently there's no crying over credit cards either - oh wait, that's an oxymoron.

The Diamondbacks are a good team. The Braves lost to them at least once last year, and probably more, if I recall correctly.

I'm still following the Braves. Our victory against the Phillies last night was swee-ee-ee-t! considering how much we lost to them last year, and what a hard time we've had getting started this year against the Padres and the Dodgers.

My Arizona Diamondbacks are hanging in there. Ketel Marte, Eugenio Suarez, and Corbin Carrol, Perdomo, Naylor, along with all the other guys in the club and the pitching bullpen are working hard as a team and spoiling their fans with awesome plays (answer backs, lol). Right now I hope my boys sweep the Chicago White Sox. Fingers crossed 🤞
