National Paczki Day

Finally! Something I can sink my teeth into!! (yes, literally!!!!)
THIS is paczki: (my dad used to make these, mmmm)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii52/wojtekfrompoland/paczki.jpg

Paczki (punch-key) Day is the feast of plenty before the Lenten fast begins. It is the last day of gaiety in Karnawal time, the period between Christmas and Lent. This is the time for sleigh parties called Kulig. To mark the last moments of excess before the austerity of Lenten sacrifice, Polish Roman Catholics celebrate Paczki Day.

On this day the traditional deep fried pastries (something like jelly doughnuts) are enjoyed throughout the world's Polonias. This joyous activity precedes the Gorzkie Zale (lamentation services) of Lent in Polonian churches. In Poland, Paczki Day takes place the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, called Tlusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday). Long lines form in front of the bakeries in Polonia, and millions of Paczki are sold.

oh yeah, and here's the holy one:
http://www.quakerinfo.com/images/penn_holy_exp.jpg
Penn believed in a "divine right of government" and sought to form the government of Pennsylvania as a "holy experiment" in governing. His Frame of Government of Pennsylvania is considered by many to be ahead of its time. It set forth a representative form of government. Thomas Jefferson called Penn "the greatest law-giver the world has produced."

{{{{{{{{{{{{Janey}}}}}}}}}}} You sweetheart! Thank you so much for the support! I truly, truly appreciate it!

Yes, my friend really does need me, terribly so--she came over here and told Gryph and me about the aneurysm before she told anyone else, not just before she told her kids but even before she told her guy. We held her while she cried. It is SO SCARY, yanno? And her guy rushed right over (they're in an LDR, he lives in another country), but he isn't as strong for her as he wishes to be because he also is scared, as anyone would be to find this out right before they marry the love of their life. They're both so afraid that these few days are the only ones they'll get, that the aneurysm will pop and my friend will die... and it's a realistic fear.

I don't know why Gryph and I are able to put our fears aside to be strong for her, but Janey, I will always be grateful for this gift from the Universe: that she needs me, and I am able to be there for her.

She has tests next week--the doc wants to know everything he can about this aneurysm before surgery--and she's just dreading them. Her sister is a retired RN and has told her all the possible side effects for the contrast dye. Damn, a little discretion would have been a good thing, yanno? There are some things you just cannot prepare for, and all it does is scare my friend more.

So I might not be here so visibly right now, but I am here on the fringes, so to speak. I come to read this thread several times a week, and teh LOLZ thread, too, and I appreciate the smiles they bring more than I can say.

It's best that the doc know what he's up against when they do go into surgery, but I understand her fears. Since the surgery seems to be so close to the time of diagnosis (just my feeling, that is), I guess your friend is not one those whose aneurysm would be fine to leave as is. Some folks have them for years and years before diagnosis and/or they pass from other issues, but I'm sure that thought would bring them little comfort.

It's good that her sis is in the medical field. Knowledge is power. One of my friends from high school had an aneurysm burst while driving. She wound up get smacked around about 5 times (she crossed the grass median into traffic after getting bumped from the car behind her when her car veered). Thankfully, other than the aneurysm, she had no serious injuries from the car accident.

She's fine, but she's different. Please know that after the surgery, the friend you know now may have personality changes. Amanda had been blonde but after her hair grew back in, she was brunette. She'd also been a bouncy, perky, mildly annoyingly chipper, cheerleader type personality before and now, frankly, she's a snipey bitch. But we still love her. It's just harder to like her. Good luck to her and you all. :stillheart:

(CNN) -- The world marks International Women's Day on Monday, an annual celebration that highlights their economic, political and social achievements.
"International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men," the United Nations says.

The day was marked for the first time in the early 1900s. More than 1 million women and men attended rallies in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in 1911, according to the United Nations. They demanded that women be given the right to vote and to hold public office, and an end to job discrimination.

"It is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights," the United Nations said.
Women for Women International is sponsoring peace demonstrations on bridges in 70 locations. The event will "honor the resilience of millions of women survivors of war around the world" and push for peace instead of armed conflict, the group said.

On a bridge between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo -- countries marred by internal violence -- thousands of women will gather in support of peace and development, the group said.

While a celebration of progress, International Women's Day is also a time to acknowledge the struggles women still grapple with around the globe.
Sarah Brown, wife of UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, joined thousands of demonstrators on London's Millennium Bridge on Monday in a stand against obstacles faced by women.

"There are still too many women suffering in pregnancy, childbirth, no access to good health care, suffering from violence, suffering in all kinds of ways," Brown told CNN. "I think women all around the world feel a greater sense of solidarity for campaigning for better human rights."
Hundreds of white balloons were released to signal the marchers' desire for peace and equality.

A push for equality in India prompted angry protests, which disrupted the Parliament several times Monday in a bid to thwart a landmark bill that would reserve one-third of the seats in federal and state legislatures for women. While the president is a woman -- Pratibha Devisingh Patil is India's first female president -- women make up just 11 percent of the members of the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

On Saturday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh vowed to work for greater female representation in the country's democratic process, citing Women's Day as a time to "reaffirm our government's commitment to all-round social, economic and political empowerment of our women."
Half of India's female population cannot read or write, authorities say.
In Iran, female activists were honored Sunday by Zahra Rahnavard, wife of Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi, in celebration of International Women's Day.

About 30 of Iran's most prominent women's rights activists and their supporters held a private gathering in Tehran. Rahnavard declared that the women's opposition movement was still alive. She said the movement would not forget the sacrifices by women who were jailed, beaten or died in the post-election protests last year. Women, treated as second-class citizens under Iranian law, were noticeably front and center at the massive demonstrations after the disputed election in June.

"This year these women are now much more visible," said Nadya Khalife, a gender equality researcher for Human Rights Watch in Beirut, Lebanon. "But Iranian women are not only battling gender discrimination, they are also battling heightened political tensions."

Gender Equality for Iran, an activist organization, launched a renewed campaign for women's rights to mark International Women's Day, the group said.

The campaign, Call for Solidarity: Freedom and Gender Equality in Iran, is calling for the release of all political prisoners and an end to government-sponsored repression, the group said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has made women's rights a key aspect of her international agenda, said Monday that women still have a long way to go in obtaining full rights.

"Women are still the majority of the world's poor, unhealthy, underfed, and uneducated," Clinton said in a video message posted on the State Department Web site. "They rarely cause violent conflicts but too often bear their consequences. Women are absent from negotiations about peace and security to end those conflicts. Their voices simply are not being heard."

She repeated her words from a speech she made at the 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing: "Human rights are women's rights, and women's rights are human rights."

CNN's Mitra Mobasherat, Jill Dougherty, Zain Verjee, Harmeet Shah Singh and Reza Sayah contributed to this report.

Thank you for posting!

We have come a long way, but there is so far to go!

Men are still trying to have the goverment control women's right to their own bodies in the USA, supposedly one of the most advanced nations in the World.

Our infant motality rate is huge, our healthcare system is a disgrace.

Yes, Elixabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony got a lot done for women's rights, but for me it fell apart when they split with Black women.

Until we all have the same rights, we need to keep pushing.
