Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was an ardent nationalist and prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.
It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we
transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we
truly know and accept it--then life is no longer difficult. Because
once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.

Every person should be born again on the first day of January. Start with
a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let
down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every
person gird him or herself once more, with face to the front, and take
no interest in the things that were and are past.

Jabberwocky ~ Lewis Carroll

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

As a doctor, I studied survivors--people who got sick but exceeded expectations. Many of those exceptional patients had been given little time to live, yet they were some of the happiest people I'd ever met. They knew, or they discovered through their illness, which became their teacher, that if you want to be happy, you must answer some key questions. What are you here for? And how do you want to spend your limited time? If your answer is that you are here to love, to serve others and not to be served, then you already have everything you need to be happy. If you wake up in the morning, that's enough; you are grateful for life and the opportunity to contribute in your way.

What we are talking about is learning to live in the present
moment, in the now. When you aren't distracted by your own
negative thinking, when you don't allow yourself to get lost in
moments that are gone or yet to come, you are left with this
moment. This moment-- now--truly is the only moment you have.
It is beautiful and special. Life is simply a series of such
moments to be experienced one right after another. If you attend
to the moment you are in and stay connected to your soul and
remain happy, you will find that your heart
is filled with positive feelings.

the unbearable lack of me.
I want your skin
to yearn for the soft lure of mine;
I want those hints of red

to deepen in passion for me:

I want you to keep
stubbing your toe
on the memory of me;
I want your head to be dizzy
and your stomach in a spin;
I want you to hear my voice
in your ear, to touch your face
imagining it is my hand.
I want your body to shiver and quiver
at the mere idea of mine.
I want you to feel as though
life after me is dull, and pointless,
and very, very aggravating;
that with me you were lifted
on a current you waited all your life to find,
as though you were wading
through a soggy swill of inanity and ugliness
every minute we are apart.
I want you to drive yourself crazy
with the fantasy of me,
and how we will meet again, against all odds,
and there will be tears and flowers,
and the vast relief of not I,
but us.
I am haunting your dreams,
conducting these fevers
from a distance,
a distance that leaves me weeping,
and storming,
and bereft.

Entering the Mare by Katie Donovan

(The inauguration of an Irish chieftain, as observed by Gerald of Wales in the 12th century)

She stamps and shivers,
her white coat vainly shrugging,
as the would-be chieftain
plunges in, burying deep
his puny, acrid man’s seed,
between her fragrant haunches.

The Goddess lives
in her fine rearing head,
the pink stretch of her lips,
the wide, white-haired nostrils.
Her hoof
might have crippled him,
her tail
whipped out his arrogant eyes.
Instead she jerks clumsily,
trying to escape
the smell of his hand.

Later he swims
in the soup of her flesh,
sucking on her bones,
chewing the delicate morsels
of her hewn body.

He has entered the Goddess,
slain and swallowed her,
and now bathes in her waters –
a greedy, hairy, foetus.

Rising from her remains
in a surge of steam -
her stolen momentum –
he feels a singing
gallop through his veins:
a whinnying, mane-flung grace
rippling down his spine.

Riding off on the wings
of the divine Epona,
he lets loose his dogs
to growl over her skeletal remnants,
the bloody pickings
in the bottom of his ceremonial bath.

CONFLUENCE
Beneath the amber hood
of the street lamp,
beside the black gates
of the somnolent park,
we are eyed by fanlights,
flanked by motionless cars.

In this blind Georgian lane
you lean in
to claim a kiss.

I offer you my goodnight lips,
staying like a shut purse
in your embrace,
wary after years
of opening too fast
my burns still hurt and proud.

Yet the sweetness of your mouth,
and your tongue — a luscious,
sinuous sea-creature –
is a feast I cannot resist;

nor can I pull back
from the strength in your arms
as you draw me close,
loosening your coat
to fold me
in your cinnamon heat.

Here it is, timeless,
a scene on a street:

a man and a woman
tongued and grooved
into one.

From page 14:

"And he discussed a topic that shaped his approach to everything: his mother placing him in a St. Louis orphanage for much of his childhood.

"I spent a lot of time in my life denying certain things about how I was raised"..."And what I know now more than anything at the age of 70 is, bad things happen to all of us. And we're not judged by how many bad things happen but by how you overcome them and actually make something of yourself."

The world is too big for us, too much is going on, too many crimes, too much violence and excitement. Try as you will, you get behind in the race in spite of yourself. It's a constant strain to keep pace. . . and still, you lose ground. Science empties its discoveries on you so fast that you stagger beneath them in hopeless bewilderment. The political world is news seen rapidly, you're out of breath trying to keep pace with who's in and who's out. Everything is high pressure. Human nature can't endure much more.

And loved me even when I didn't love myself.

You held my hand in the darkness

I love you...
You are my light.

And it doesnt matter what happens

When I look at you, I know that there's a God

For many years now I have listened to the stories of people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses as their counselor. From them I have learned how to enjoy the minute particulars of life once again, the grace of a hot cup of coffee, the presence of a friend, the blessing of having a new cake of soap or an hour without pain. Such humble experience is the stuff that many of the very best stories are made of. If we think we have no stories it is because we have not paid enough attention to our lives. Most of us live lives that are far richer and more meaningful than we appreciate.

And she smiled her smile for me
I felt it for the first time
Something deep inside of me
So you can take your midnight rambling' boys
And keep your winding roads

She's living inside my heart now
Livin' inside

Oh there's an easiness about her
There's a softness in her way
But she gets me through the hard times
We get closer every day
I know I'll never be alone now boys
Cause even if I'm far away

She's living inside my heart now
Livin inside

And I don't know what I did to derserve her
But I'll tell you my friend
I'm never gonna loose her
Never gonna loose her
Cause every night
She's livin' inside my heart now

The unhappiness we experience is not so much a result of the difficulties encountered along our journey as it is of our misperception of how life instructs us. We may see a failed relationship as an indictment of our self-worth when it is really a lesson in using better judgment, in valuing ourselves more, in expressing greater appreciation for our partner--lessons to prepare us for a more loving and fulfilling union. If we are passed over for a much-anticipated promotion, it may be just the push we need to get more training or to venture out on our own as an entrepreneur. As we rise to meet the challenges that are a natural part of living, we awaken to our many undiscovered gifts, to our inner power and our purpose.

Do not live for the future attainment of your goal. Live your life through the lens of your vision and what can be done in the present moment. Living your vision is not about reaching your goals. I wish there were a book I could read each day to tell me exactly what to do to live consciously from my heart and soul. But part of the mystery and magic, part of the reason I'm here, is to try to stumble through and hear what the soul has to say about what it needs at each moment--whether it is to work through an emotional block, discover what the next lesson is, meet the next soul mate (my children are soul mates; my best friends are soul mates), or finish my business with the one I'm with now. Ultimately, for most of us, the journey comes down to the same issue: learning to love freely. First ourselves, then other people.

right now
your defining moment

what if every event, heartache, and mistake
was perfectly planned to lead you
into the situation you presently find yourself in

what if mystic voices whispered answers to
you while you sleep
and people are carefully thrown in your path
all for the evolution of your greatest good
whether you like them or not

what if it did not matter what you did

what if it was not an accurate prediction of
what your future will look like

what if you were not the only one feeling
this way
tired and lost
joyful and free
all at the same time

what if others were also thirsty
for the same soul balm you were craving
what if you could meet them simply by
following your own truth

what if the reason you don’t fit it
feel outside the box
outside the norm
is because you were not built to fit
but to create your own molds and make
your own set of rules

what if they were wrong
the mean voices that live in your head
that say things like
“no you can’t”
and “that is not possible” and “what
a stupid idea”

what if those voices do not belong to
you but some hurt angry child you never met
that needs love and care

what if your faults
were also your assets
disguised as flaws

what if nothing was random
not even a spilled cup of coffee
or a broken heel on the way to work

what if there is no one left to
impress
what if there is nothing
wrong with you
and nothing wrong with them

what if it was all striped away
your comforts
distractions
addictions
and praise

so you could finally meet
the raw, naked version of
yourself
who is much stronger and bad ass than
you expected

what if this helps you see
what you are really made of
and you realize
that is it not only more than enough
but that you

Among men, it seems, historically at any rate, that processes of co-ordination and disintegration follow each other with great regularity, and the index of the co-ordination is the measure of the disintegration which follows. There is no mob like a group of well-drilled soldiers when they have thrown off their discipline. And there is no lostness like that which comes to a man when a perfect and certain pattern has dissolved about him. There is no hater like one who has greatly loved. -John Steinbeck, novelist, Nobel laureate (1902-1968)

With pithy public-service announcements about the transitory nature of existence, I remind myself regularly not to get too comfortable here. But it's the kind of advertising that's immediately forgotten as I settle into my comfortable home. In the morning, I take a shower - plenty of hot water - and slip into one of several familiar identities, a few of them the worse for wear but nothing a little accessorizing won't fix. They all answer to the name "Sy." They all recognize Sy's aging face in the mirror. They're all unable to accept that at any moment all of this will end.

so tricky that we would never do it, if we did not want someone, someday to believe in us, too.

Dyke Hands
by SDiane Bogus

Because dyke hands are the sexual organs of lesbian love, they can be as shocking to view as the penis through an open fly, or as bold (delicious) to behold as the breast of a woman suddenly uncovered.

Those hands you see folding laundry at the local Laundromat, reaching, grasping, holding canned goods at the supermarket, may very well be the genitalia of some woman’s lover, exposed. They often belong to our lovers, and those very hands come to our beds outstretched to touch, to rub, to tickle, to smooth, to run ripples of pleasure over our bodies, and often we take those very hands, finger by precious finger, into our mouths, assuming their cleanliness, their sanctity, and perform fingerlingus. We suck with reverence the hands that bring us to knotted heat, the very hands that hours before were signing some asinine form or holding a steering wheel. How can we possibly go on day after day, year after year, letting our lovers show their stuff to the world? How can we in good moral consciousness let our lovers take their naked dyke hands into a bar, reach for a beer and clutch it in front of lusting lesbian eyes? We all know that we look at the hands. We look at their size; we look for strength; we look for experience; we look for dexterity; evidence of ability, technique. But maybe I’m assuming something. Maybe I am assuming that lesbians revere the hands of their lovers, choose lovers by their hands. Maybe they don’t. Never even thought of it. I mean, some go by the face, or legs, or ass. Me? I’m a hand woman. If she’s got dyke hands, she’s got my attention.

Recently, my lover and I went for a manicure, my first professional one. The beauty across the table grasped my lover's hand, placed it face-down on her upturned palm. She spread the fingers wide, and proceeded to lotion the hand, up to the arm. Massaging and drawing with a near-pornographic stroke, the manicurist pulled her own encircled hand down my lovers arm, smoothly, pressing with sensual surety every molecule of lotion into the pores of her arm and hand. She did this to both hands, and I sat there allowing her the privilege to have her way with my woman, wondering what she’d think if she knew she was performing a six-dollar jack-off for the lesbian community. I was tickled by my vulgarity. But when she repeated the process, I realized that she was getting into it, and I became jealous, hating her flirtatious rape of my woman. I sat seething, and giving my lover the eye. She knew. She knew, and she was tickled to death at being loved so well. A picture of ol’ Madge on the Palmolive commercial flashed before me, and it all became so clear why those straight women flock to Madge’s for soap-dish manicures. It was her dyke hand loving that they craved. Poor misguided Palmolive! At any rate, there was my lover’s ten virile fingers stretched out like a naked man before a geisha, and something in me was proud and pissed at the same time. How good these hands were to my flesh when their touch wrought magic fires in my feet, raised the hair on my arms, brought my clitoris to know and explosion! How dare this brazen money changer masturbate my beloved before me eyes! How dare she be so oblivious to the genitalia of lesbian love here naked before her. There she sat safe in her (I assumed) heterosexuality, unknowingly a whore to my woman’s pleasure. If only she knew!

When it was my time, as tight-jawed as I had become, I literally squealed with pleasure. This intimate fondling, paid for or not, was delightful, one of the few good pleasures in life that is not yet overinflated. I sat back, with the joke on me, and let the manicurist, who became a human being, a woman making love to me, without the slightest notion, and I enjoyed.

The hands that stroke my hair, caress my flesh, that grip my thighs, press my love button, that slide between the redness of my labia, ought not be seen by the daily populace. They belong in gloves, or mittens, and perhaps as a nation of women identified lesbians, white, black, or brown leather gloves can be made the symbol of our private sexuality, and between us at least the idea that we are lovers of women can be acknowledged by us all.

My holiest orgasms come from the probing phalanges of my lover’s dyke hands. I’d not like to have them generally touching every Tom, Dick, and Harriet, not my dyke’s hands.

This is Ramana’s awakening. Papaji said, “Stop.” If your life is about going, becoming, getting or escaping—stop.

It was when we first talked i seem to know
That this was a love from long ago.
You were easy to talk to, conversation would flow
Yes this was a love i seemed to know.

Maybe back in time you'd once been mine
But somehow i lost you and my heart did pine
Now years have passed and once again
You turn up in my life's picture frame.

When we embrace and hold one another
Will our heartbeats recognize each other.
Please be the one i've been searching for
I need you now more than ever before.

Will history repeat or will i hold on
To the love of my life i cherish bar none.
Will this be the lifetime i have you again
Or will i remain in this terrible pain.

The surface of life is also in a state of constant flux, with good days and bad, victory and defeat. To maintain, as the ocean does, a deep inner calm, while the storms of misfortune, reverses, fears and worries lash at the surface of life, is to discover the secret of serenity.
Years ago, when Thomas Edison's factory burned down, he wasted no time bemoaning his fate. Immediately after the disaster the reporters found a calm, quiet man already at work on plans for a new building.
When Emerson's home was destroyed by fire and his precious books were being reduced to ashes, Louisa May Alcott came to console him. The great philosopher said, "Yes, yes, Louisa, they are all gone, but let us enjoy the blaze now. Isn't it beautiful!"
Some people are ocean personalities. In their inner depths they are not defeated by what happens to them.
The towering waves of circumstances cannot reach us when we go deep within to seek the peace that passes all understanding. While the surface of life is in turmoil we can find an inner calmness to see us through.

We find by losing. We hold fast by letting go. We become
something new by ceasing to be something old. This seems
to be close to the heart of that mystery. I know no more now
than I ever did about the far side of death as the last letting-go of all, but now I know that I do not need to know, and that I do not need to be afraid of not knowing. God knows. That is all that matters.

The Other Girl - A Poem About Cheating

I finally just stopped asking There is no point, you see The times I push him for the truth He will just lie to me

Or he'll just be half honest He'll tell me where he goes But what he's doing with that girl Just he and God do know

He knows that I am jealous But how he makes excuse And when I tell him how I feel I only light a fuse

"I can't just stop seeing her You know she's a close friend Don't let this jealousy pain you Your little heart will mend"

I don't see why he protects That girl he cheats me for He knows it's nothing serious She's just his little whore

And oh, the way he says it As if he's blind and dumb To the fact that I've always known The shady shit he's done

Why do you stay?, you might ask Is he that much a catch? Is the love you have all that strong? Are you a perfect match?

And to your questions I say That no, he's not that great But I keep him 'cause every woman Wants him on her plate

And plus, the time that we've had Has been two years plus more He was nothing when we first met But then good looks he scored

Yet still I cannot help it I feel such pain each time I know he's sleeping in a bed That's not his and not mine

And though I'm always in pain I do feel slightly bad Because that girl just gets a taste Of what she'll never have

So both sides are depressing But if you couldn't see I'm not the girl I said I was--

The other girl is me

On the canvas of my life
I have seen many paintings
Of the times gone by
All left my heart aching

As the canvas gets full
And the corners start fading

To draw my lifes ending

Will there be enough paint
To draw two people
Or will i run out of space
And forever be single.

If you dislike anger, be extra slow to anger. If you dislike judgment & condemnation, be extra compassionate. If you dislike hatefulness, give out extra ...doses of love. This is how we will change the world.

This is a poem i wrote for a beautiful woman i know called Rose, she has been my muse for quite a while now.

You MUST sing it to the tune " Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer"

Rose has a couple of puppies,
Hidden down her sweater top.
And if you ever saw them,
You would think their gonna pop.

One of the little puppies,
Has a cherry for a nose,
And I would love to see it,
Can I have a peek dear Rose.

Then one frosty Christmas night,
Rose fell on her ass.
And the puppies both fell out,
And rolled round in the grass.

Then as I watched her struggle,
To get them back inside her bra,
I smiled and I whispered to her,
I love them just the way they are.
