There are a sort of men whose visages
Do cream and mantle like a standing pond,
And do a wilful stillness entertain,
With purpose to be dress'd in an opinion
Of wisdom, gravity, profound conceit,
As who should say 'I am Sir Oracle,
And when I ope my lips let no dog bark!'
O my Antonio, I do know of these
That therefore only are reputed wise
For saying nothing; when, I am very sure,
If they should speak, would almost damn those ears,
Which, hearing them, would call their brothers fools.
William Shakespeare

My Body Is a Confederate Monument

“If there are those who want to remember the legacy of the Confederacy, if they want monuments, well, then, my body is a monument. My skin is a monument.

Dead Confederates are honored all over this country — with cartoonish private statues, solemn public monuments and even in the names of United States Army bases. It fortifies and heartens me to witness the protests against this practice and the growing clamor from serious, nonpartisan public servants to redress it. But there are still those — like President Trump and the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell — who cannot understand the difference between rewriting and reframing the past. I say it is not a matter of “airbrushing” history, but of adding a new perspective....

The black people I come from were owned and raped by the white people I come from. Who dares to tell me to celebrate them?”

Moral Clarity : Hard to pin down in more ways than one

The article exerpted below deals mostly with the subject of "moral clarity" vis-a-vis journalism.

"So what is moral clarity? The philosopher Susan Neiman, who wrote a book on the subject, says that it is not, in fact, a statically defined concept: it can be found only on a case-by-case basis. “Moral clarity, however, is about looking at each particular case, looking at all the facts, looking at all the context, and working out your answers,” she stated in a lecture. It should not be confused with moral simplicity: we may have clearly defined moral values, but the quest for the actual position of moral clarity is always complicated and specific to the circumstances. ..."

First generation immigrants
By Ijeoma Umebinyuo

Here’s to the security guards who maybe had a degree in another land. Here’s to the manicurist who had to leave her family to come here, painting the nails, scrubbing the feet of strangers. Here’s to the janitors who don’t even fucking understand English yet work hard despite it all. Here’s to the fast food workers who work hard to see their family smile. Here’s to the laundry man at the Marriott who told me with the sparkle in his eyes how he was an engineer in Peru.

Here’s to the bus driver, the Turkish Sufi who almost danced when I quoted Rumi. Here’s to the harvesters who live in fear of being deported for coming here to open the road for their future generation. Here’s to the taxi drivers from Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt and India who gossip amongst themselves.

Here is to them waking up at 4am, calling home to hear the voices of their loved ones. Here is to their children, to the children who despite it all become artists, writers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, activists and rebels. Here’s to Western Union and Money Gram. For never forgetting home.

Here’s to their children who carry the heartbeats of their motherland and even in sleep, speak with pride about their fathers.

Keep on.

“but she means to have what she
has earned,
sweet sighs, safe houses,
hands she can trust.”
— Lucille Clifton, “to my friend, Jerina”

He can’t tell I grit my back teeth when he exclaims,
“An allergy to coffee? I’ve never heard of that!”, and I shrug,
as if this is the first time someone has expressed their
incredulity so profoundly, I say, “It happens”. I’m gracious,
calm, I mean if you discount the slightest shortening of my
upper lip, a bit of a curl really, I wouldn’t say a sneer. I
used to explain myself and my faulty body, swim full-tilt into
conversational nets full of marvel and pitying curiosity.
I’ve stopped. Accepted it. And maybe I sigh,
but I mean to have what I

reach for: clean safe air, lungs rounded with ease, the boring
sort of acceptance, a normalised story about my body.
I want chemical masks as quotidian accessories, like umbrellas
or hats. I want the bread-like, unexceptional family violence
that led to this, that sickened and curled me, so many
of us, up inside, like xylem slowly dying inside a turned
tree trunk, unseen but heavy with consequences, to be
recognised, protested, uprooted by outrage and
practical solutions, never-again changes, forever spurned.
We have earned

the revolution. We’ve struggled to see ourselves reflected
in the dirty surface of the mainstream; to meet our bedrock
yearning for safety, gentleness, absence of swinging fists
or planks of wood, of flying spit, sometimes laced with acrid
words; to cobble together access, sometimes cutting wood
planks for a ramp, sometimes asking friends, spouses,
strangers, to change their detergent, give up their
favourite shampoo or deodorant. As abnormal and
inconvenient as we seem, we deserve carefree carouses,
sweet sighs, safe houses,

same as you who can breathe the poison in, let it wash
through your blood, let your liver scrape it all out like a washing
machine while you talk, laugh, sleep, same as you who
can walk far, carry your groceries, can function when the music
is so loud it’s thick in the air, in our breastbones, our brains.
But our differences are rarely invited, planned for, discussed.
So I am a delicate fucking flower; you can’t drink coffee next to
me, or peel an orange, smoke, sip wine, invite me to dance parties.
But I will still surprise you: claim this body and safety and lust,
reach for hands that I can trust.

You're so hard on yourself.
Take a moment.
Sit back.
Marvel at your life:
at the grief that softened you,
at the heartache that wisened you,
at the suffering that strengthened you,
Despite everything,
you still grow.
Be proud
of this.

Love Poem to a Butch Woman by Deborah A. Miranda

This is how it is with me:
so strong, I want to draw the egg
from your womb and nourish it in my own.
I want to mother your child made only
of us, of me, you: no borrowed seed
from any man. I want to re-fashion
the matrix of creation, make a human being
from the human love that passes between
our bodies. Sweetheart, this is how it is:
when you emerge from the bedroom
in a clean cotton shirt, sleeves pushed back
over forearms, scented with cologne
from an amber bottle—I want to open
my heart, the brightest aching slit
of my soul, receive your pearl.
I watch your hands, wait for the sign
that means you'll touch me,
open me, fill me; wait for that moment
when your desire leaps inside me.

https://www.theroot.com/congress-doesn-t-give-af-about-america-1845716037

More people are dying, businesses are closing, more people are losing their jobs and the people need help and relief. And here we are going on another month with nothing. Mitch McConnell and his crew are fuckwads. They always have been. There is nothing new there. But the inability to work with them is starting to make Pelosi look like she’s holding out for something that is never going to come. Pelosi believes she has leverage by blaming America’s instability on the Republican Party, but the current election proved that is a lie. She has no leverage because she’s forgotten something I learned while out on the streets: You can’t argue with a nigga that don’t give a fuck. Republicans don’t care who dies. They don’t care who is going hungry or losing their jobs, and guess what? Their homeless, hungry, constituents don’t either. At this point, a deal, any deal, needs to be made because America can’t wait until February for something to give.

I had at last come home.

If there was, in this, some illusion, there was also some truth.

In the years in Paris, I had never been homesick for anything American. Neither waffles, ice cream, hot dogs, baseball, majorettes, movies, nor the Empire State Building, nor Coney Island, nor the Statue of Liberty, nor the Daily News, nor Times Square. All of these things had passed out of me. They might never had existed, and it made absolutely no difference to me if I never saw them again.

But I missed my brothers and sisters, and my mother. They made a difference. I wanted to be able to see them and to see their children. I hoped that they wouldn't forget me. I missed Harlem Sunday mornings and fried chicken and biscuits, and I missed the music. I missed the style... that style possessed by no other people in the world. I missed the way the dark face closes, the way dark eyes watch, and the way, when a dark face opens, a light seems to go everywhere. I missed, in short, my connections, missed the life which had produced me and nourished me and paid for me.

Now, though I was a stranger, I was home.

—James Baldwin.

... Many MAGA .sapiens believe that they lived in a Democratic society until Nov. 3, 2020. They actually believed that voter suppression and disenfranchisement had nothing to do with low Black voter turnout. These motherfucker truly believed that Black people just didn’t like to vote.

And that’s not racism. That’s white supremacy.

Part of the reason white folks think they live in a democratic republic is that they don’t know shit about Black history. Because white history is deemed more important, they don’t understand that the mass murders during Reconstruction reconfigured American politics more than the Civil War. They don’t understand that the civil rights movement wasn’t about going to white schools and eating at white lunch counters, it was about democracy.

The story of the civil rights movement is more important than the Cuban missile crisis. Slavery is more important to understanding the American economy than the development of the light bulb, the automobile and the telephone combined.

You can’t comprehend this country’s geographical makeup without studying the Great Migration. You can’t understand how America won the War of 1812 without understanding the German Coast Uprising (https://ushistoryscene.com/article/german-coast-uprising/). You can’t understand police without understanding slave patrols. You can’t understand America’s gun culture and the Second Amendment (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/24/opinion/second-amendment-slavery-james-madison.html) unless you learn about slave revolts.

COMING FORTH INTO THE LIGHT

I was born the day
I thought:
What is?
What was?
And
What if?

I was transformed the day
My ego shattered,
And all the superficial, material
Things that mattered
To me before,
Suddenly ceased
To matter.

I really came into being
The day I no longer cared about
What the world thought of me,
Only on my thoughts for
Changing the world.”

A reporter asked Fran Leibowitz, who is 70-years old, when did she know she was a lesbian. Here’s her reply:

“This is something that’s very hard to explain to young people today. Being gay, it was illegal then. Forget fighting for gay marriage, how about just trying not to go to jail? So you never saw it, it was never talked about, it didn’t exist in the world. So if I had not seen occasional mentions of it in books, I would never have heard of it. I had a friend who grew up in a very blue-collar environment in Wilmington, Delaware, and she thought she was the only [lesbian] in the world, and that was a common thing then. I have a very vivid memory of when I was 12 and in the backyard reading, and I remember having this exact thought: ‘Well, I suppose if there’s such a thing in the world as lesbians then someone has to be them. But why does it have to be me?’ Because I instantly knew that I could not live like that in the world I was living in, and I was pretty happy in that world. Of course, what most people did was they stayed in that world and pretended to be straight, but that never occurred to me.”

It's time for Women Church.

Here, we enter the pews
in our hearts
and listen to the sermon or our hips.

We worship the holy trinity:
Maiden , Mother , Crone

The softness of our bodies is our primary temple,
we revere curves and plentifulness
and dance to celebrate it , if we like.

Our sacrament is seconds on everything we desire
and here we heap our plates.

We delight in the holy doctrine of supporting deep nourishment
and singing sacred praise to our sisters.

We tell our stories and braid each others hair
while we pray
sitting in a circle
announcing our power,
our tenderness,
our beauty,
our voices,
our grief.

We invite the ancestors in for tea
and bring all cast-out feelings in from the cold.

We paint pictures of goddess relaxing and taking
a much needed break
while gods massage her feet
with oils and feed her grapes.

quite a price to pay for our fleeting existence
love has a hefty price tag if time is our currency

I offer you a pen and my checkbook
and I ask you to be financially responsible
you don't have to be fugal
but I pray you spend my time well
hoping you understand the economy of my heart

I meet girls and ask myself, Are we wasting our time?
We spend time money, love, hate, sex and bartering
so many different currencies to pay with
my heart and dick want to empty the bank for you
but my brain ponders if your worth my time

Hearts must be spent in the world
love does not accrue interest like a saving account
love must be shared, but it drives a hard bargain
I hope you spend wisely
because we can never get it back

"Finding yourself" is not really how it works. You aren't a ten dollar bill in last winter's coat pocket. You are not lost. Your true self is right there, buried under cultural conditioning, other people's opinions, and inaccurate conclusions you drew as a child and adult that became your beliefs about who you are. "Finding yourself" is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, an excavation, a remembering of who you were before the world got it's hands on you" - Anonymous

the day didn't go your way
but you were alive and experienced it.

so

stop for a moment and look around you
are you safe?
are you fed?
is there beauty around you?
count those blessings.

so

stop for a moment
close your eyes
what do you feel?
what do you hear?
is this place home?

so

stop,

and then,

“To have a caring and committed heart toward someone—a heart so firm in its devotion as to sooner stop beating than neglect the object of its desire despite the person’s state of health, appearance, reputation, finances, troubles, or challenges that, dear world, is love. Is love a fancy, or a feeling? No.
It is immortal as immaculate Truth,
'Tis not a blossom shed as soon as youth,
Drops from the stem of life—for it will grow,
In barren regions, where no waters flow,
Nor rays of promise cheats the pensive gloom.
A darkling fire, faint hovering o'er a tomb,
That but itself and darkness nought doth show,
It is my love's being yet it cannot die,
Nor will it change, though all be changed beside;
Though fairest beauty be no longer fair,
Though vows be false, and faith itself deny,
Though sharp enjoyment be a suicide,
And hope a spectre in a ruin bare.

i wonder where they land...
are they quenching a toad's thirst?
are they bonking a salamander on the head as it blinks?
are they making a worm thankful?

Love rests on no foundation.
It is an endless ocean,
with no beginning or end.
Imagine, a suspended ocean,
riding on a cushion of ancient secrets.

All souls have drowned in it,
and now dwell there.
One drop of that ocean is hope,

This strand of thought by Salman Rushdie has always prompted me to be brave enough to leave group-think types of processing in what we see and read and hear about in life. I’ve found that it is true, to do as Rushdie suggests we do when we need to consider the whole entire unseeable picture. Step out of the “frame” and before too long, you will see what the real story and consequences are to consider.

Love this quote. Whether the road is to a romantic relationship, a better job, a new lifestyle, a larger bank account, whatever it is, it’s not always easy getting from point A to B. There may be detours, lanes closed, back-to-back traffic, may be stray animals in the road you have to dodge, Mr. Mayhem could be tryna distract you. You may get tired of waiting and take a quicker path (good luck with that). You never know what you’ll come across on the road to success. "Violence does not spring from a vacuum. It's born out of other men's violence. It gets nurtured and it grows in a soil of prejudice and of hate and of bigotry."

Rod Serling

This quote is quite prescient in light of the current madness enveloping the GOP.

Being a huge fan of The Twilight Zone his insights of his time dovetails into what is happening right now!

Serling's time in Leyte shaped his writing and political views for the rest of his life. He saw death every day while in the Philippines, at the hands of his enemies and his allies, and through freak accidents such as that which killed another Jewish private, Melvin Levy. Levy was delivering a comic monologue for the platoon as they rested under a palm tree when a food crate was dropped from a plane above, decapitating him. Serling led the funeral services for Levy and placed a Star of David over his grave.[2]: 45  Serling later set several of his scripts in the Philippines and used the unpredictability of death as a theme in much of his writing.[2]: 46  In the 1960 Twilight Zone episode "The Purple Testament", a prologue written by Serling stated, "Infantry platoon, U.S. Army, Philippine Islands, 1945. These are the faces of the young men who fight, as if some omniscient painter had mixed a tube of oils that were at one time earth brown, dust gray, blood red, beard black, and fear—yellow white, and these men were the models. For this is the province of combat, and these are the faces of war."

His daughter Anne Sterling is very proud of her father, I wrote to her last year stating the admiration I have with her dad. I didn't expect a reply, but she wrote back with a warm "thank you."
