Y'all have inspired me! I joined a gym yesterday. I took it slow on my first day and did 15 minutes on the bike and 15 minutes on the treadmill. Since I haven't done much exercising in the last several years I figured no need to overdo it. I felt pretty good when I left there and I slept really well last night. :)

Way to go, Mopsie!!!

You do you, girl. Like a sign hanging at my gym says, "the only bad workout is the one you didn't do".

Then there's, "you may not be the fastest, but you're lapping those still on the couch".

Yeah, it's a little schticky but I like it. They also have one that is a conversation between a trainer and a newbie. The trainer is encouraging their client and the client is a bit of a whiner, truth be told. Then, the client says something about suing for damages or whatever and the trainer says, "you only did one push up!" lol Cracks me up every time because that's the area I do my planks when in a session and I feel like that sometimes.

Today I did 30 minutes on my favorite stairmaster while finishing the Netflix series "Afflicted." Today was a day I found it harder, just a bit more challenging, doing my cardio. Sometimes it's unclear why one day is harder than another. The body always has surprises in store for us, and I like hearing what it has to say. Well, sometimes.

One of my fave gym cliches: "A body in motion stays in motion."

Okay so I am a beginner's beginner at the gym. In other words I am very out of shape but you have to start somewhere. Today was my second day at the gym and I walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes at speed 1.5. I know that's very slow but when I got done my legs were noodly (is that a word?) so I know it was a good workout for me. However while I was working out I noted how slow I was going in relation to everyone else. I was the tortoise in a room full of hares. I was watching Chopped on the Food Network - how ironic - but of course I was also people watching. When I saw the apparently 85 year-old man running I was feeling a little bit down on myself. Then I remembered y'all's fun quotes! Thanks for the support!

Go you! You have to start somewhere. The thing is to start and keep going at the pace that's right for you. If you tried to start with running a 5k you'd quit because that's not realistic.

My last two days I mostly met my exercise goals just working- lots of running up and down stairs and moving people. Tomorrow should be a bike to work day- fingers crossed. Couple of things could get in the way.

I agree with easy. If you do too much too soon, you'll either injure yourself (thereby setting yourself back days or even weeks, depending on the injury) or you'll get overwhelmed and be done with it all (setting yourself back days, weeks or maybe longer). It happens. I've done it and it's not fun, so don't do that.

The tortoise won that race with the hare, btw. Like the quotes? Here's more!

Life isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. Slow and steady wins the race. You're only one workout away from a good mood. Every day is another chance to get stronger, eat better, live healthier and be the best version of you.

So walk that 1.5mph with pride. Next time you can either go another couple of minutes longer or walk 1.7 mph or bump up the incline just a smidge. But only ONE option. Only change ONE thing at a time to push yourself in a reasonable manner. Small changes make for big results over time.

Today was 42 minutes on the stairmaster. Allllll the regulars were there. Miriam was walking around the gym for exercise. The perfect mother was on the elliptical. The perfect daughter was on her computer in the locker room. And Taylor was in the sauna. Today Taylor told me that she thinks the perfect daughter has a perfect body. And Taylor doesn't even know that in my mind I call the perfect daughter "the perfect daughter." The perfect daughter has the body of maybe a playboy centerfold, and Taylor's very short and twig-like. I asked Taylor if she has always had her body type, and she said yes. It's more like a child's body even though she's in her thirties. Taylor generally eats all her calories (from 500 to a supposed 2000) between 8 and 10 pm. I'm still pretty fascinated by that. :koolaid:

I'm very curious about eating all her calories between 8 and 10 at night... It seems like you would have to binge to get your calories in. I've heard of other people doing this - I don't really understand how this is beneficial.

Hope you got to bike to work! Since I have to drive on a highway to work I don't think that's an option for me even if I were fit enough. But in my mind you are biking by a lake through a forest to work. I have no idea if that's really what's happening.

I took your advice Coach Gemme - today I walked at speed 1.7 mph on the treadmill. I also remembered to take my inhaler before I worked out which made me feel quite speedy! Woo hoo! I went along pretty well until the last five minutes and then I was counting every second until I could get off the treadmill. But I feel really good about the workout - my legs were noodly but only al dente! :cheesy:

Today I treated Jackie to lunch, but after lunch, we walked around the nearby neighborhood, reminiscing about homes we knew about and area business. Then we went up to the Rose Gardens and walked for awhile up there, decompressing about stressors in our lives. After we finished walking around the Rose Garden, we went out to the Beaumont district, and we stopped by her friends house, to visit her friend.

By the time I got home, this afternoon, I just caved and sank into my very comfy living room chair.

I'd say I only got about two hours worth of slow walking exercise, but my legs and feet feel it, as well as my back and arms.

Today I did 42 minutes on the stair master and 30 minutes on the weight floor. Here's what I did on the stairmaster:

Four 10 minute sets with each level for 2 minutes (then a 2 minute cool-down after the 4th set):

Level 5: full arm support using railings with hands at hip level
Level 4: same as above
Level 3: same as above but side stepping, 30 sec. lft. 30 sec. rt.
Level 2: semi-support of arms using railings at chest level
Level 1: balance support only, with hands lightly on railing in front of me

The first set is easy, the second set harder, and I'm really sweating by the third set, though nothing like the men, who often sweat buckets, thankfully. I sweat from my face and neck, and lower arms and lower legs.

I finished a GREAT documentary on Netflix called "The Bleeding Edge" about the politics of healthcare. I strongly recommend it for those of you with interest in the topic of how the FDA approves new medical procedures. Hint: BADLY! In addition to the systemic info, there were also some very interesting personal experiences shared.

I went to the gym after the opthamologist so my eyes were dilated. My gym has a welcoming robot that lets you in only if it recognizes your eyes with its sensor. Interestingly having my eyes dilated caused the robot not to recognize me. That's never happened before but every time I tried, it said, "I have detected your irises but I do not recognize them." I had to knock on the door until a member opened it. The member who opened it was Gayle, the old Ricki Lake producer. She said she worried I was a burglar but decided to open it after a few rounds of my knocking. She's someone I'm not so crazy about but I guess I should be since she is the one who let me inside.

Miriam was there, the plump elderly curmudgeon who directs cabarets. She's really warmed up to me. I get a smile from her, even though she's not one to smile.

Happy exercising, exercisers. Oh and one more of those sayings: "My work-out is my morning coffee."

Today I was about to go to the gym and a good friend, an old colleague, texted me to ask if I had time to talk about something personal. She actually wrote "persona," so somehow it took me about 10 minutes to realize she had meant to write "personal" and that I should contact her (The text read: "Can you talk? Persona."). So instead of go to the gym, I made a quick decision to walk in the park. It was 5:30 in the evening and I walked for two hours, catching right before sunset- a beautiful time to walk. I live half a block from a huge endless beautiful park (Riverside), and the weather was perfect, so it was a very nice choice.

She talked to me for about an hour and a half about her abusive relationship, and I know her partner well and am well aware that it is an abusive relationship- physically, emotionally, and verbally. I try not to alienate friends when they are in abusive relationships, since it gets to the point that no one else can handle listening to them, and everyone needs an ear. She got it all out and then did ask for advice, which is the only time I like to give advice, when someone is ready for it. I worked on hashing out a safe plan for getting away and also validated her feelings. So it was deep. We usually talk extremely casually, often because the partner is there, and we don't want to trigger the partner- the whole control, suspicion, walking on eggshells thing.

I feel so relieved that I made the call and didn't just ignore the text and go to the gym. I wouldn't put that past myself, not realizing how serious a situation is. Instead I veered toward the park and called her and said, "I have all the time in the world to talk to you." She got teary and said she didn't know what she'd do without it. It was an intense reminder that if a friend reaches out, it's important to make room for it, that they may not have anyone else who can listen to disturbing details that they need to discuss so that they can get validation and feedback on what to do.

Anyway... it smelled so good in the park. There is nothing like nature.

Whoa. See? That's one of the reasons why you are awesome.

I would have responded cheekily, like "what persona would you like? Suave loverboy? Baby doll? Jersey?"

Good on you for helping and being such a good friend and listener!

As for me and exercise, I did some manual labor today and I walked around Wally World for a while tonight.

When I was reading the above section I was hearing Mission Impossible music. That sounds really cool - I want to use spy ware to get into my gym! There is a spy museum in DC that I haven't been to yet - but it's on my list. I live in a relatively small town, however, there is still some crime. My gym is open 24 hours during the week and I wondered about the safety for the staff that have to work around the clock to check members in. I wouldn't want to be there at 2 in the morning when it's just a big glass door that opens like doors at Walmart. Hmmm... maybe there's something else that goes on late at night - I've not been there late at night yet.

I'm so glad that you took the call and that she knew you were someone she could talk to. I hope she gets out of that unsafe relationship. Its so hard to watch something like that and do nothing but if the person is not ready to leave then no offer of help will help. Sending good juju for your friend.

Hahaha, I did not get to ride that day. I was dressed and ready and went out to load up my bike and the sky opened and it was pouring buckets. It was supposed to be just cloudy and maybe light rain, which I would have ridden through. My ride is not beautiful lakeside, but it's nice. The roads to work are sucky full of potholes and traffic circles that people don't know how to navigate and I've almost been hit a few times in them. But we have nice bike path that has been extended recently and I can mostly stay on that for my ride until I get to the neighborhood that my job is in. Then it's back to dreadful potholes but lighter traffic. I also have to go through a casino lot and thus have to watch for drunk drivers there.

At lunch today I went off my eating plan. Like way off into carb land. I came back with a food baby. I gave it 2 hours for my body to digest but I still had that food baby and felt like a pregnant whale. But I decided that even pregnant whales could probably walk on a treadmill if they had feet. So I went to the gym.

That's right - I'm a badass.

I am terribly exhausted from yesterday's activities, but today I made up my mind to get some form of exercise in.

I moved my new plants into Eddie's bedroom (with help).

I took my favorite old make-do chair, the lawn chair, outside onto the deck, which now sits below the umbrella, so I can sit outside when it rains.

I had my helper move the big wood and glass top table into the vacant space formerly occupied by my lawn chair.... so I can sit my laptop on it, while watching tee-vee type programs, etc.

Then I vacuum'd up the carpets and in Eddie's bedroom (thankfully the vacuum cleaner is ultra light weight).

I broke into an sweat, so now I need to shower, before committing the last bit of energy I have to make something to eat.

Sometimes, I have to practically beg myself to move, when I feel so tired. I didn't beg at all. I just took an no-nonsense approach and said to myself:

Move! <<<<<<~~ this word will prove to be lifesaving, for sure.

No weights necessary, Mopsie!

If you are looking forward to your time at the gym, that's great! Workouts give you endorphins and that's happy juice for your brain. I know when I've had a really good workout, I feel the best about myself and I have high self-esteem. I love that feeling!

I took today off but will head back to the gym tomorrow for circuit training.

I was in Ohio visiting my mom for five days, where I did not exercise. My mom gets lots of exercise taking her dog on at least two long walks every day. But I wasn't really eager to go out in the heat.

Today I went back to the gym and had a great work-out, 36 minutes on the stairmaster and 30 minutes on the weight floor. It feels good to get back to my routine! On Tuesday I go back to school (work), so it will be trying to keep up my summer work-outs.

Hope everyone is enjoying their exercise.

Welcome back! :)

I wanted to tell you that I finally saw the StairMaster machines at my gym yesterday. I thought maybe we didn't have any. We only have three and they are tucked into a corner but my God those things are huge! :| If yours are the same kind you are climbing Mount Everest every time you get on. I am so in awe of you!

As for me I was on the treadmill yesterday for 30 minutes. When I went on Tuesday I tried to speed up some but it started hurting my bad knee. So I had to slow back down to a little bit faster than tortoise speed. I decided yesterday that if I couldn't be a hare, then I was going to be a mountain goat. I increased my incline every five minutes as a way to give myself a challenge. It went pretty well! :)

Good for you, Mopsie! See? One thing at a time! You're doing great!!!

I have trouble with my knees too. I'm not sure if it would work for you, but glucosamine works wonders for me. It coats the joints so it's especially good for argumentative knees.

I get to do some manual labor today but it's okay. It'll be 20 degrees cooler than yesterday and with far less humidity.

I did an lot of walking yesterday, and today.

One of my new goals is to walk at least one hour per day, even if my legs continue to throb or my back is screaming at me (I don't take pain killers of any kind, medication wise).

I checked in today with my primary care doctor and she said to stick to one hour or less, of walking per day. So that's what I'm going to do. If it the weather turns rainy or snowy, I can always go to an big store and walk around for a bit, rather than use an electric shopping cart. But I'll still use the E-cart when I go grocery shopping. :balloon:

32 minutes on the stairmaster, and 20 minutes on the weight floor- for a total of 52 minute workout at the gym

I went back to Toddlers and Tiaras. I missed it. The competition is quite engaging. And the psychology of the families are interesting. It's kinda boring but interesting enough that I thought I'd give it another try. Tonight's pageant: Disco Fever theme.

Gym a bit empty due to labor Day weekend. Closes at 6pm due to holiday weekend. I exercised up until it hit 6pm and felt like somehow that was exciting.

Happy exercising, all!

Today the gym was closing early for Labor Day weekend. I did 40 minutes on the stairmaster. I put it on the wrong settings. Guess I just wasn't paying attention, so that threw me off, but I just went with it anyway. I watched the pageant theme Sugar and Spice on Toddlers and Tiaras. What makes it exciting in these competitions is how you never know if a toddler is going to blow kisses or have a temper tantrum. There is some suspense there.

I saw Judith on the way in sitting on the locker room couch. She said, "Oh, hey, Jennifer!" It was nice.

Happy exercising!

This was my first time at the gym since last Thursday. I had a bad migraine on Sunday that bled over into Monday. And then my tummy was feeling terrible this morning so I decided not to try anything new tonight. But it felt good to be back at the gym. :)

I also noted a very large gun show going on at the front of the room tonight. I'm not sure what the occasion was but there were a lot more men lifting weights then there were on previous Tuesday nights at 5:30 pm. I was glad to see a few women joining in on the gun show.

Thankfully there was a good episode of Chopped on that I could watch while I worked out. Tonight it was the Teenager Edition which I thought it made it more interesting - they seem very willing to take risks!

As for me I worked out last night at the gym and did the treadmill again. I decided to try adding 5 minutes to my routine and continued on with my mountain goat theme. The only downside was that I saw the first couple of minutes of the next chopped show and got hooked and wanted to stay to watch it. But there's no way I could have done a whole nother hour on the treadmill cuz my legs were noodly already! There was a gun show going on again at the gym so maybe everybody's just back from vacation. I have also figured out that I have a favorite treadmill which I was surprised to discover. I feel like I would like to put my name on it but I suppose that's not allowed.

I feel good about today. J is out of town and not here to help so it would have been easy to make excuses and just sit parked in front the computer all day. I made myself get up, push past the I don't wanna, and got moving. I've lost a couple more pounds but even so I've been finding myself doing a lot of negative self talk. It's hard to keep plodding along. I know that's the best strategy for losing weight and keeping it off – slow and steady wins the race, but sometimes I still guilt trip myself for not working harder.

I woke up after having not moved around much during 9 hours so my back was tight and I was a little stiff. No circuit training for me today. I love my elliptical because it's so versatile and helps me work kinks like this pesky stiffness out so obvs I hopped on it today.

Yesterday....

I hiked for over 6 hours. A lot of uphill. Some bushwacking (it should burn more calories; it’s so arduous)

After that I geocached til dark. Most were park and grabs (where you pretty much drive up to it) but some took some walking. 300+ft x 2 adds up.

I’m pleasantly sore today. I’m also determined to do this more oftener. My soul just needs it.

Today I went to the gym and thought I might attempt to get on the elliptical.

I learned that I am but a small grasshopper and cannot yet attempt such a feat. I was on there about 3 minutes when my muscles were screaming, "Get off! Get off!" That will have to be a goal for me to achieve in the future.

So I went back to my beloved treadmill.

Today I walked 35 minutes and made it to Incline level seven. Woot! I don't know if it was the three minutes on the elliptical or the going to Incline level seven but I had extremely noodly legs that felt like they were not attached to my body once I got done with my workout. :|

It's easier than you might think and is actually more gentle on your joints than slamming your feet onto the treadmill but technique makes or breaks you and not all ellipticals are equal. You will get there, grasshopper.

The rowing machine is much harder than the elliptical, even if you are sitting down. It's a full body workout because you're engaging your core, arms and legs at the same time. I get winded after about 5 minutes at a normal pace and at about 2 minutes at a faster pace.

I like the 3rd video the best. The guy's personable and he shows you ways to fix the mistakes that make sense.

Now, I didn't watch every second of each of the videos so it may have been addressed but if you row, don't lock your knees. Locking your knees in exercises will inhibit blood flow and could, over a continuous period, cause a drop in blood pressure, which means night night, which is not good.

Yesterday I did 30 minutes on the stairmaster, and today I did the same but followed it with 30 minutes on the weight floor (weights, stretching, abs, etc).

Prior to yesterday (Sunday), I had not exercised since Tuesday. Last week was my first week of school, and it was a rough week. I had my period :hamactor: and I had tried increasing my antidepressant (I lowered it back to my regular dose), so everything was just off with me. Luckily I am off today and Tuesday due to the Jewish holidays, so I can continue getting my groove back.

I saw the best friend of the perfect daughter today. Her name is Hilary (with one "L"). She's an interesting character. She does double work-outs, something I've always thought sounded cool and maybe will try out some day. She goes to the gym twice a day. Needless to say she is one of the regulars. She likes to go in the sauna with Taylor, the faster. And she and the perfect daughter study their college materials together in the locker room. So anyway, I saw Hilary on the weight floor. She was with a trainer just starting a session. I ignored her so that she could focus but she noticed me and said hello. I had JUST finished and said, "I'm just finishing." She said, "I'm just starting." I didn't know what to say. I felt bad for her because it's easier to have just finished than to be starting. I felt guilty that I was in the advantageous position. Yet I also wanted to be positive. So I said, "Work it!" and giggled, and she returned the giggle. I'm not sure it made much sense :vigil:.

I didn’t want to quote Gemme’s Entire above post (and I can’t seem to do partial quote on my phone) but I’ve been told that the rowing machine is one of the BEST machines to use. It’s also very over looked and is therefore usually available to use. Even if you use it as a five minute warmup. And Gemme is also correct in that you will use your core. I have to thank you, Gemme. I have a rowing machine and after watching the third video, realized I have been doing the no-no's. When I went on the machine today I followed his advice and what a difference. I definitely was much slower because I kept my feet out of the straps, but also because I have to retrain myself on keeping my knees down and bringing my arms forward first. While I didn't go "as far" as I normally do in the time I row, I absolutely felt it more and sweated just as much. Thanks again!

I love the rower but it is super sneaky in that it makes you feel as if it's not that bad but it can whup your butt in no time. I'm done after 10 minutes--max--so I'd like to build up my stamina.

It is. It took me a bit to get up to 30 minutes. What worked for me was upping my time by 1 minute for three days and then another minute for three days, etc. Besides physically being able to adapt more easily, I found that it helped me mentally, especially on those days where it felt like FOREVER to get to the end, even though I did the same amount of time the day before. I originally tried upping it for 5 minutes for two weeks thinking that would be great, but mentally that added 5 was brutal and I would stop earlier.

As I think I have stated on here before, I have a treadmill and rower that I use pretty frequently, in the morning. I have found myself concerned about the amount of time I am not very active, especially now that I am sitting a lot doing school work. I try to go hiking when I can, but the weather has been shit. I finally set up a yoga area and am doing yoga in the evening to get the blood flowing, burn some calories, and break a sweat. So far so good. I have one of my laptops linked to a large tv my son brought with him when he came home from the army, so I get a really nice view of the Youtube video which is super helpful because I know none of the poses. I'm not really excited that I am showering twice a day, but I have to admit that the shower at night is relaxing. If anyone has a recommendation for a Youtube channel for beginner yoga videos I would appreciate it if you would pass it along.

Today I did 30 minutes on the stairmaster. There are only two Stairmasters, and they are right next to each other, so sometimes friends stair climb beside one another. When I arrived, that was exactly what was going on- two men beside each other chatting. I decided to see if I could wait them out. One good thing about the stairmaster is often someone gets off within five minutes. I just had a feeling... And within five minutes, they both climbed down. By that point I was standing there obviously pleasantly waiting, so we chatted. They both wiped down their machines. The guy who was going to be releasing the one I'd be getting on (my favorite) really went to town cleaning it. It may have been partly because I was watching, but dammmmnnn. I thanked him and said, "Now if only we could clone you."

Happy exercising! And remember: Bodies in motion stay in motion...

I wasn't feeling the greatest on Tuesday so I skipped the gym and went last night instead. I had to get to a meeting so I only did 30 minutes on the treadmill instead of 35. But I started a little higher on the incline and went from Level 3 to level 9.

Also, amongst all this discussion about the rowing machine, the treadmill that was open was right behind the rowing machines. I watched this lady who was doing the rowing machine and she seem to be doing it correctly but least as far as I could tell.

After seeing those videos, I think I might have to wait a little while before I tackle the rowing machine but still it looks like something that might be fun.

Yesterday tried doing 100 steps on my stepper plus a half-set (ie: half the usual number of reps) with my dumbells once an hour for a few hours (I have to be more careful with the weights than with the stepper). Can't remember if I did 4 or 5 lots like that. Going to try to do the same thing today after I've had my dinner.

I was wondering if the rowing talk skeered you off! Glad that you are still plugging along with us. Every moment counts.

I like the rowing machine. It's just deceptive and that's what I was trying to convey.

The plan was to go to the gym this morning but I have a nagging headache. I've taken something but I suspect it's because of the weather system in play, which means all the Aleve in the world won't help. Bah.

If I feel better, I'll do what you did and hit the gym up later today.

Joined a new gym a few weeks ago now. It's remarkable how much your general fitness improves.
Cycling to work is not as much of a struggle with 2 hills to go up.
So I don't get bored at the gym, I tend to mix it up a bit.
30 mins cross trainer, 15 mins rowing machine, 15 mins and cool down on bike. Sit ups and upper body weight training.
Other days spend longer on the rowing machine or bike.
Going to take a few classes when I get more confident.
Trying to get ya heart rate up to over 136 is a task when youre over 50.
You really have to push yourself.

Hi Gemme,
I was taught a neat trick by a gym teacher once.
Now you may look a bit of an idiot when doing this but, hell i dont care when i do this on the rowing machine, its everyones else's problem if they think i am weird ;-)
I close my eyes and visualize i am on the river of my local town where i was born.
I also have a kingfisher flying next to me, which came from years ago in a therapy tip to calm and just at peace with myself.
i swear i can feel the sun on my back, doing it creates the most inner peaceful feeling if you just go with it.
Its all in the power of the imagination.
You get to a stage where your leg muscles just totally feel like they arent working at all because of the way you focus on the image.
May sound a bit weird but works for me.
Gets you in the zone

Doing a little exercise hourly for a few hours has been working well for me, so I increased the number of steps each hour to 200, along with one set with the dumbells. Managed 800 steps, which my machine tells me is 132 calories burnt, and 4 sets with the dumbells. Feels like the regular exercise is starting to pay off, as I'm moving a bit better. My mood has also lifted today. Still feeling stressed, but not so low.

it's beautiful weather, here today, so I went on an small walking adventure to the nearby farmer's market (for veggies and fruit). Then I went by an good friend's house and she's got an miniature trampoline in her home, and a gait belt. So we put on some music and she got the gait belt around me and I used my walking poles to steady myself and she helped me 'jump' on the trampoline, for a little bit. I have an equilibrium issue, still, so we just took it easy, but gosh, it felt like old times when I used to put on music and just 'jump' away to my heart's delight. :stillheart:

I probably exerted an good deal of energy, burned up a few calories, and most of all, it just felt good to 'dance.' :balloon:

I had a great workout this morning, exercisers!

It was my trusty elliptical. There's no shame in favoritism. I didn't get my actual personal favorite elliptical but they are all very nice and they are still ellipticals.

Stats: 329 cal, 2.86 mi, 45:00 min

A guy was on my favorite elliptical when I started and got off a few minutes later.....nyc is SOOO right about the 5 minute thing!.....and he then moved to the treadmills. A guy that had been running like the Devil was after him moved from the treadmill to my favorite elliptical and I initiated conversation with him briefly, giving him encouragement for such a difficult workout. We went back and forth for a few minutes and then both kind of zoned out into our workouts.

He left and another guy got on that elliptical and I didn't really notice because I was totally zoning out and then, when my program stopped, he commented to me in appreciation of my time and ability to stay on the elliptical so long and we spent a couple minutes talking about how to extend elliptical workouts when your feet are tired or burning. It wasn't rocket science but it was a nice turnabout with me talking to the first guy and the second guy initiating conversation with me. Fun!

I last exercised on Wednesday but then was too tired Thursday and Friday. It's my second week of school and I still am struggling to get enough sleep on school weeks. Without sleep for more than one night in a row, it feels too hard to exercise. My sleep is something I would like to improve upon. I go to bed too late. I have not solved that riddle of going to bed on time on work nights.

Anyway... today I walked to the gym x 30 minutes at leisure, and then I went on the stairmaster for 32 minutes. I did get one of the two stairmasters, though not my favorite, but at least I didn't have to go to the climb mills (Just the name is annoying, much too hampster-like.). The stairmaster that is not my favorite is easier than the stairmaster that is my favorite, so I have to increase my levels accordingly. The pattern I did was Level 7 down to 1 for two minutes on each level, for two sets. Then I did a four minute cool down on level 1. I'm watching an interesting documentary a woman did of herself and her Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

It was a Saturday night, so not many people. When I returned to the locker room, Taylor was there. She was naked but had towels covering the essentials. I find it interesting that she's self-conscious about her body. Generally in the locker room people are relaxed about that. I don't think it's because she knows I'm a lesbian, because she doesn't seem the type to think that way. Taylor talked to me about a book she was reading on fasting and mentioned how it helps with cancer. Then she told me that there is a certain woman at the gym named Caroline around whom she doesn't want it to be mentioned that she fasts. She told me that she was going to flicker her eyes at me if Caroline was around so that we wouldn't accidentally talk about her fasting. She felt that Caroline was the type that would call it an eating disorder. I agreed to this somewhat odd request but think her signal should be different. I won't notice if her eyes flicker. I'm thinking she should instead say to me, "How's Tim?" I could not mistake that. I might suggest that but the whole thing is weird. Taylor is perhaps my favorite gym friend of all. I'm not sure why but I think it's fun to see her, towels and all.

Happy exercising! Gym saying: Commit to something.

I went to the gym and then I saw that there was a big street fair one block away. Like a starry eyed child, I turned away from the gym and began walking into the street fair like it was an enchanted forest. I found myself chomping on an ear of corn like a beaver and examining little tchotchkes. It was a beautiful day, and everyone seemed happy. There were kids bouncy house type stuff, including one where a kid puts on a velcro suit and then gets thrown onto a velcro wall, each level having a point, kind of like Skee-Ball. It was mesmerizing to watch, and I wondered if I could get thrown up on the wall, but then I imagined a news story of my death :vigil:

I did actually make it back to the gym like over an hour later and did 32 minutes on the stairmaster, my favorite one, my usual pattern.

I went to bed too late last night and had to get up early for work, so I was pretty tired today. It was a push to get myself to the gym, but I did it: 32 minutes on my favorite stairmaster. I finished my depressing but good documentary on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome called "Unrest." Now I've started (also on Netflix) another depressing but good doc called "Brave Miss World" about rape. There's nothing like being tired, on a stairmaster, and crying as you watch a movie. :|

The personal trainer, Janet, who has a tendency to invade my space was there. After I get off the stairmaster I have a post-stairmaster routine where I go to a window ledge and watch a few more minutes of my Netflix. It's a good way to wind down, and it's a spot where there's a fan. So it's very personal time. I'm sitting there watching my movie, in my space, and who gets in next to me wayyyyy to close and starts to engage me. Yep, Janet. I'm always half-friendly but not signaling much engagement back to her, and she wanders off. She told me I could remember her name by thinking, "Damn it, Janet!" and that's exactly what comes to mind when she and I have an encounter :pirate-steer:

I've been fairly busy today! I went out on an errand to an washeteria to do my laundry off site (because it's cleaner where I went to) and while out doing laundry, I got an idea to go out to the community college to visit the Aquatic Center and see about an membership. I joined for the season and just happened to have my swim suit with me, so I stayed for about an half hour and practiced walking in the water, with an float device ( a cute purple noodle, lol) and then went and sat in the jacuzzi for about twenty minutes. Awwwwww….. my back and muscles loved it!

I surely do appreciate the group support and the little sayings by nycfem and Greco and Gemme and all of you! It's true, keep moving, even if you don't have $20K at stake. But if you think about it, there's lots at stake, when you don't move.

Thanks everyone for sharing your about your exercise pursuits and all the little things you observe while you're out and about.

Just a little bit about my pool time today: As soon as I could get into my swimsuit (which took some time, lol), then went out to the pool and then visited the Jacuzzi, the life guard came by and told me that they were closing soon, like right then. She said, "I've got some bad news...", and I smiled because it's not really bad news to have to leave the pool early. I've got an season pass now, so I can go out and practice walking in water and sit in the jacuzzi when ever it works best for me.

Here's to floating in the pool and walking in the water and getting as much exercise in my daily life, as I can.:balloon::bouquet:

My warm up was on the elliptical, natch.
Stats: 138 cal, 1.30 mi, 18:00 min

Then I moved to an inclined bench and did some ab work followed by some upper body work. I did the ropes and the looped rope and the rebounder before moving onto the rower. Did 5 minutes of that at a steady pace and then it was back to the machines. Lat pull downs plus some tricep focused exercises and then I moved to the free weights. I got some flys in as well as bicep curls, overhead lifts and lawnmowers (can't remember what the actual term for them is right now). I went back to the looped rope and did a couple of stretches.

I feel great! Of course, I'll probably be sore tomorrow but that's the nature of the beast. You have to tear it down to build it up.

Not much in the way of cardio except walking to the restaurant for brekkie. Tomorrow I’m planning to take a purty good hike.

I AM doing a lot of cleaning today. Hopefully it all balances out. I definitely worked up a sweat with the kettle bells. Have I mentioned how much I love them?? They improve my back strength and all around strength. They also work the core without the obligatory (flat on your back on the hard ground) crunches.

YouTube is filthy with kettle bell workouts. I can not recommend them enough.

ooooOOOOooh, today I did a bunch of stuff (walking, shopping, walking, rearranging my house, etc).

I went out to Big Lot's and bought an new bedframe to go in the East bedroom and a new bedding set for my old mattress, that I turned into an bed for guests (my son's if they visit or my mother). My neighbor Bob lugged it all upstairs for me and he assembled the bedframe for me.

But I cleared out my youngest son's closet and boxed up all his union papers, resume's, anything of value, and organized his closet. Then I lugged the stuff down the stairs and three boys in the apt community saw me trying to lug it out to the dumpster and offered to help, so I let them help me. But it's scary for me to try to take anything down 3 flights of stairs, but I did it.

I also bought some new curtains for the east bedroom windows and curtains for the front patio door windows... and stretchy rods to hang them up. That took some time for me to do, and my arms ache, but the results are worth it. The curtains block out summer heat, yet they help the house stay warm in the winter, so I am excited I found them today and got them up by myself.

I also went out to St. John's to my favorite dress boutique (Salty Teacup).... and bought two really wonderful dressy dress-type tops. One for me (b & white polka dot jersey, short cap sleeves, wrap type dress) and the one I bought for my sil/bff is black with an low neck and an bow tie string type accessory at the low neckline. I had to park quite a ways from the dress shop, so I walked to and from and all around the small store.

By the time I got home, my neighbor lugged all my stuff upstairs, then I committed the rest of the day to organizing the east bedroom closet, and hung the curtains and vacuumed and dusted. I broke out in an extended sweat for nearly an hour, after working on my house projects for about 5 hours.

I've been told that if you break into an sweat and you keep working out or doing what ever it is that you're doing, for at least another hour, that you're burning up energy and calories and such. So I felt like I got a great work out in, today. :balloon:

I was determined to get back on track this week! So, despite a bad headache and dinner plans, I went to the gym before I allowed myself to go home tonight.

I walked on the treadmill for 37 minutes and reached a incline of 12. In case you're wondering 37 is my lucky number and 12 was random.

I watch "Chopped" again which apparently is on all night. (Not just around the dinner hour.)

Ok, so it's on. NYC Marathon is on Sunday Nov. 4, 2018.

So, 2:12:00 is qualifying time for a half-marathon
and 4:50:00 qualifying time for marathon.

Presently running 2hrs on my long runs = approx. 12mi
or a 10min mi. So, my pace time per min must come down
to qualify.

Stopped my walking with talkie friend, no walking now.
Blisters have made their visit, but are getting better.

Started hill workouts...slow, but steady on Sat 1mi
at what looked like 45 degree incline...felt like a 90 degree
incline...smiling. Yes, I have major leg strength training to
do.

To do: Qualify to race in 2019 NYC Marathon
by lottery or charity fund raising and time.

Train...train...hill workouts...interval workouts...
and strength training (not in love with this part as
it's done inside the gym, but must be done, period)
And long swims twice a month as this also strengthens
my body, and gives me time out in the element I most
love...the water.

And most important...feel and make friends with
my fear of failure, for I know that this is my way
of succeeding and accomplishing my goal.

Look forward and one day at a time put one foot
in front of the other and soon will see my nieces and
nephews' faces at the finish line...now that's a visual
that is more than motivating for me.

Also, this is a do-over...my attempt in 2010 was a disaster
that I felt profoundly. And, it may take me a bit to get
back up to "snuff" but I'm no quitter...So me and my
body are going for this, yes I'm nervous,
but am also excited! And grateful for another opportunity.

Wish me luck for this year of training.

Last intentional exercise was 9/30- last weekend. Still struggling with work. Today I followed Gemme's rule and got in "at least half an hour"- and that's what it was: 30 minutes on the stairmaster. I watched Tyler Perry's Medea goes to Jail (don't hate).

Sprinted about a block to pick up a couple of sharp metal pieces that were on the road from a nearby construction site and threw them back on their lot and then sprinted back to my vehicle.

I wasn't going to pick up the pieces at first but I have been taking that route lately and was getting a bit worried each time I drove over them that I would puncture my new tires. So, I decided to solve the problem myself since no one else had! :)

Before the run day share:

Will run tomorrow morning before my first client...my thoughts
this evening intense...but what else is new?!...this
high altitude has helped my running...endurance...my lungs
expanding in Self-love...it has been good for me...for all the
miles...for all this beauty...I am forever grateful.

Interesting turn of events though...in almost 12 months I
will run and this time complete the marathon that has been
in my life for so long now...and this chapter of my life I will
close with a gratitude deeper than I can ever say.

I will no longer be running in this beauty of a
high desert...I will only be a visitor next
time I do.

How will my running change at sea level? Right now I simply
do not remember the runs at sea level...how my lungs sang or
cried out...but will embrace the change and breathe in
all that this life offers me.

Tomorrow's run awaits...good evening. Greco

Running again and from now on until Spring
in almost total darkness...and my first
"Goodbye" run...thinking of my clients
and how closure with them will be longer
than most therapists practice...but I have
always found it essential.

The smell of piñon already burning from homes in
this place seduces the air...birds it seemed still asleep
until my run back and arriving home at 0630 hrs
headlamp off, I heard the first chirp and the
Crow family overhead flying proud.

6mi...my first breathing of grace for this day.

My body wanted up. Pitch black view except for the stars that lived
this night. A great time to somehow make my way out of the past and bring
with me only the loving memories that live still clear and unmistakably alive
...and my headlight.

Had a discussion that angered me later in the day...went out for
another run to clear my head and rebalance my energy...fact is, I
don't live in "boxes", labels are much too limiting. And, I don't live
within another "box" and will not accept that label.

Could use another run it seems, but won't tonight, not looking for injury

I'm checking out Vent fitness. Perks: Levels of pricing that work for me to tuck into using equipment, taking classes, and using their pool for laps. I have yet to see negatives but I haven't gone there yet ;)

I checked out a different gym yesterday that was way over priced and under served in what they offer. But while there I met a cool woman, maybe 20 years older than me, both of us breast cancer survivors and moms to labs, looking to kick ass. She's a member of Vent and I might join her there and kick ass together.

We have a spiffy, new state of the arts Phys-Ed facility on campus and because I'm alumni, I get to use the facilities (for free). WhooHooo, right?

I used the bicycle machine, just like the ones at my former PT office used, and I walked in the pool, and sat in the jacuzzi, and then I walked what felt like an bazillion miles, back to my car. I spent two hours, each visit, last week. I decided it was better to centralize my exercise activities to the campus because I am out there about three days a week (working on career stuff), so rather than go east to exercise, I go west. :tease:

I still experience lots of spasms in my lower back and legs, and the pain is unreal at times, but I just keep going and keep moving and keep telling myself that if I don't move, it will only get worse. So other than those types of things, I am making progress. It feels good that I can move, although I still have mobility impacts I won't ever hurdle like I used to, before nearly two years ago. Btw, the anniversary of that event in my life is in a few weeks (election day, almost).

Happy Saturday to every one and Keep Moving! :hk28:

My issues of poor sleep and work stress continue. The sleep seems more under my control so I will have to keep trying to conquer that issue. I stay up late.

Today I did 30 minutes on the stairmaster while watching a show on Netflix called "Naked"- something. It's a journalistic doc show. The episode I watched was on the drug Fentanyl. It was not too entertaining, and I really don't want to be that educated while struggling on a stair master.

Tomorrow I scheduled a walk with a femme friend (on this site, but don't think she's here much). It will be in the mid-fifties tomorrow so time to dress warm! We will walk in the park or by the river or both.

Just got back from spending time at the beach with my bff/sil. We had such a lovely time and it was just fabulous weather, for October. We walked a lot, shopping along the coast line, and I even found really cool walking poles, made of weathered wood (beach comber type wood). So now I have another pair of poles to walk with and feel safe using them.

Not sure how many steps we walked, but it was a lot, every day.

My back and hips and legs were on fire, so much so, that my sister-in-law (bff) gladly lent me an muscle relaxer to take, since all that walking nearly left me immobilized (pain). I slept like a rock, and felt better the next day.

We also used the pool and jacuzzi and that was really nice too. :cheer:

I had a mini trampoline and it was fun. Took up a good chunk of space even without a support. I didn't use it as much as I thought I would and wound up selling it but it's good exercise and is supposed to be especially good for the lymphatic system.

If you have the space, you can get one cheap online or at Walmart.

Does anyone else here have an apple watch? You can do fitness challenges with them and it's fun and good accountability. I've done some with friends before. Would do one with folks here if there was interest.

I ran into an old friend in the locker room. I can't recall her name. She did that running into an old friend thing where you stop and talk, but I didn't have time, so I had to think fast. She said, "How are you?" I laughed and said, "Oh, boy!" She said, "I'm ready for the new year!" I said, "Me too!" Then we both giggled and parted ways. The "oh, boy" was designed to encompass more than there was time to talk about and somehow it worked!

Today I spent part of the afternoon at a local farmer's market. The beautiful squash and late season vegetables and fruits looked so good, especially the huge heads of cabbage (big enough to make at least a dozen half gallon jars of pickled cabbage). I love going there because everything is locally grown and sundry cooking products are local to the area too.

I downloaded an walking app to my phone. Here's what it says, in terms of steps walked today: 4300 steps (at the outdoor market, alone). I was there for nearly two hours. By the time I walked home and lugged my grocery bags upstairs, my total steps for the afternoon exercise at the Farmer's Market was 4500 steps. Total hours involved: 3 hours.

Today I did 30 minutes on the stairmaster. I procrastinated and went late in the day... but I went.

On the gym floor, Taylor saw me and ran up to me and gave me a big hug and yelled "JEN!" It made me feel really good. She was with Marilyn who I don't like, plus I felt self-conscious that I was dressed gym-atrocious, so I kind of halted the interaction, and she said, "Maybe we'll catch up in the locker room." So then we did end up catching up in the locker room. She's still dating her billionaire who she works for as his house manager, whose thirty years older and sleeping with other women and doesn't know what he wants. I asked her why she wanted to be with him and she got teary and said that she thinks he's her soulmate. She also told me today, but not in the same breath, that she was raised by her grandparents, so maybe it's a "daddy" issue (I say this as someone married to someone 17 years older than me- so pot meet kettle lol). Anyway I didn't tell her this but I thought it. One of the managers of the gym asked her on a date too and they went out but she wasn't interested and didn't sleep with him. I noticed she had a tattoo of a date on her inner arm, and I asked her what it meant, and she said it was the date she found Jesus. It felt good to catch up with her. She cut her hair and said she feels lighter. I'm not sure how much lighter she can feel given that she is so tiny to begin with.

Peace out, exercisers!

I've had a good exercise weekend. Next weekend will be busy, so I'm glad I got in lots of exercise this weekend.

Saturday: 30 minutes on the stairmaster, 1 hour walk on the Highline (elevated Park along an old rail line in NYC) with an old colleague. I always love the Highline, and it's such a fun place to be on a Saturday night. I was glad I talked my friend into it so easily. 10,000+ steps on walk.

Sunday: 30 minutes on the stairmaster, 30 minutes on the weight floor (haven't been in months), 1 hour evening walk with a butch friend, Ann, in Riverside Park. Awesome. 9,000+ steps on walk.

At the gym I ran into Judith, and we were very warm towards each other. As I left, she was deciding whether or not to go to her Catholic Church that evening. I like Judith.

My gym's advertisement: "Commit to something." Kind of a good one!

Love to you all!

I dreamed about it. Does that count? Lol. I will be happy when I can do real exercise again. Now all I can do is PT exercise. Well technically I might could do some but I would be in bad pain for a long time. I’m not stuck in a chair or can’t move. I can do normal things. Just nothing too strenuous. With my meds I can do anything but I feel it later bad!!
Anyway I did my abdominal PT (physical therapy) exercises today. When I first started then I laughed and rolled my eyes right in my therapists face cause they seem so easy and just silly. But I do them anyway feeling stupid lol.
Today I pulled on one of those resistance bands tied to the door knob cause I am supposed to do that and flex my abdomen at the same time with each pull and release.
And I did the whole laying on back with knees up and feet flat on floor flexing and releasing abdomen. Then lifting hips off floor and coming back down.

Oh how I miss REAL exercise! I hope to be able to go back to that soon. No offense to anyone else out there with situations that might have to do low key exercises like I do right now.

But I spoke with my surgeon and they think it’s nerves now so on 12/6 I go and will probably be given nerve meds so if it’s nerves and they help I hope to be back out there doing what I really like!! 12/6 seems so far away. My apologies for getting off subject a little

Today, I slogged out in the rain and cold after work and did 30 minutes on the stairmaster. I saw Judith in the locker room but pretended not to see her. She was sitting on the couch by the t.v. reading the New York Times. She would never pretend not to see me (I don't think!) because I think she always wants to see me. I'm not even sure it's in her character to pretend not to see someone. I sometimes want to keep to myself, even though I like her.

As for PT exercises, I haven't gone to PT since junior high- and that was for my back- and wow, I still do those exercises to this day and love them! It makes me grateful for my back condition (kyphosis), because I learned exercises that strengthen my core and provide a calming effect.

Yet again I slogged out in the rain and did 30 minutes on the stairmaster. I started out tired but the exercise really bumped up my energy. Sometimes that's how it goes.

I've been on the fence about whether to throw in my 30 minutes on the weight floor after my stairmaster, like I enjoy doing on weekends. It always makes the workout more meaningful so I should probably try it sometime. I admit that on work days I'm eager to get home and hibernate, especially in inclement weather.

Wishing the best to all the exercisers!

Yesterday and today I did my 30 minutes on the stairmaster. I feel proud of myself. I get progressively more tired during the work week, so it's felt like a real accomplishment and not easy.

Today I saw someone's jacket hanging in the closet in the gym. Yes, the gym is more like a house. I LOVED the jacket. I immediately looked it up online to see if I could find it, and I could not find it. I became obsessed (perhaps as a way to procrastinate going to the stairmaster). I was even asking people, "Is that your jacket?" Awkward. So finally I gave up and did my time on the stairmaster. Then when I got back to the locker room, there were only two jackets hanging in the closet, mine and another woman who I don't know. I said to her, "Is that your jacket?" and yes, of course, it was! I excitedly asked her where she got it. She explained that she is from Kazakhstan and that she bought it in Kazakhstan. No special jacket for me :bigcry:

Yesterday was the first day I got back into the gym in weeks. It was really good. I had been tightening up in my neck and back area and the workout helped. I had a chiro appointment later in the day too and that helped even more.

Workout: elliptical, 260 cal, 2.21 mi, 35:00 min, 15:51 pace.

I could feel that I was coming down with something but it wasn't bad yesterday. Today, we are at the point where the throat feels like there's sandpaper in there and the ribs can feel my coughs so it's a bit uncomfortable.

I've been having muscle cramps and spasms in my leg lately and it's because I stopped the workouts. Before each workout, I would eat a banana. Bananas are a good source of potassium and potassium keeps muscles supple and blocks cramping.

Just more proof that everything is connected.

Instead of doing a pattern on the stairmaster of Levels 5-4-3-2-1 (2 min. each level), I've been doing a pattern of Levels 6-5-4-3-2. I'm enjoying the increased intensity, though intensity can also be increased by lower levels but not using my hands for balance.

I've gone back to watching "Madea goes to Jail." I love Madea! I've also been watching a show called something like "The 72 most dangerous places in the world" on Netflix. It's not very good but it still had it's moments, like 2 people who decided to stay in a town (I forget where- I think in Australia) that was infested by blue asbestos- and everyone else in the town had left! I think it's interesting when people make contrary decisions.

In any case... wishing all the exercisers "joyful movement" or "rewarding pain"- whatever floats your boat!!!

So, Sunday did not see me in the gym.
No way, it was dark and cloudy cold here
and didn't, couldn't feel myself indoors.
6mi on a road I'd not been on, open sky
cloudy but at least outside, early so almost
zero cars on this road...yes, heaven.

Then home to fire, and my green smoothie.
Blis are history...at least for now.

Fire and drawing with Hokusai.
And memories of my Veteran comrades.

Yesterday, 6 early, clients...late.

Today, 6 on a familiar desert road, yes the
one with the prairie dog holes...waited until
daylight...no prairie dogs out, too cold.
5k around the corner.

I'll make it to the gym at some point, just
not tomorrow...smiling.

Today was 35 minutes on the stairmaster. I watched a documentary, I think on Amazon Prime, called "Goodnight, Sugar Babe: The Killing of Vera Jo Reigle." Actually I'm not done with it. It's quite disturbing.

While waiting for the elevator, I had a convo with a class instructor (at the gym) about how different this gym is because of the abundance of space, how it never feels confining. It was a perfect conversation where we were both connecting. Then the elevator took forever, and it started to get a bit awkward as we repeated the same thing in different forms- or maybe it was just me repeating it. However, that is life!

Happy exercising, friends!

I did my 30 minutes on the stairmaster today.

In the locker room I talked to the woman, Gayle, who is the old Ricki Lake producer. She is someone I'm not all that into, and she spends like an hour blow-drying and styling her hair every day. Sometimes that irritates me but I try to remind myself that such an act may be soothing and certainly nothing to find annoying. She also is always on an elliptical near the stairmaster. She's on it so much that I decided to ask her how long she is on it. She said, 2 hours a day. Then she said she wished she had more work and not as much time to be at the gym. She reads while on the elliptical so she's not doing a high intensity work-out. Then she kind of turned the tables on me and also asked some slightly probing questions, something about my inconsistency in coming and my always saying I have to work late. she kept kind of saying, "Why?" I kept giving the same sort of answer that sometimes there's just more work than I can do during work hours. I've been coming at the same time as her every day, so we were bound to talk a bit. However, our interactions are not especially meaningful to me and I don't think to her either. Yet there we are. Sometimes I wonder what about me she might find annoying, maybe that I DON'T blowdry my hair and in fact look a hot mess, but who knows.

Peace out, exercisers!

But, thankfully there is one a bit less than a 5 min walk from
my home so, I focused on quick but hard bicep/delts workout
1 ea 10 reps, then left, 15 -20mins in/out...feeling relief...so, on to

Last night, according to my watch, I danced 9.5 miles worth of steps. Yay.

Today, normally I do 9am spin. But since I didn't go to bed until after 2am I did a later class at 4pm. Oh am I glad I did! 9am instructor is shrill and screams a lot and I don't love her music. 4pm dude is chill and obviously a road rider by his dialogue, and he is driven without screaming and his playlist was a great mix of classic rock, Dylan, Joplin, Queen. Yes, I was singing along at times. I'm so switching to the 4pm class. I like to get my workout done early but this is worth the wait.

Yesterday I did 35 minutes on the stair master before our Thanksgiving family gathering. The gym was open until 2pm. Then today I did 30 minutes on the stair master. I've been doing my pattern of levels 6-5-4-3-2 (x 2 min. for each level) with about three repetitions of the pattern. I love it! I'm thankful for my favorite stair master. It really does the trick for me.

I met with my trainer again this morning. It was a goooood workout. Except for when she had me doing Plyometrics. That scared me. I got the high jump onto the box a couple times but it was making me really nervous I was going to fall off so she let me shift to up down lunges- step up/down on the box for two minutes rather than 30 seconds of Plyo jumps. I'm pretty sure she's going to have me jumping on that box again next week...

Today I did 45 minutes walking on the treadmill between 3- and 3.5 mph. Then 30 minutes on the weight floor.

When I got in eye sight of my favorite stairmaster, I saw that there was someone else on it AND someone on the second best stairmaster next to it! Because these two stairmasters are next to each other, they sometimes draw couples to them. This was a man and a woman, young, tattooed, taking selfies, and working out hard. I stood in a corner to try to wait them out / see if they would get off in a few. I felt like a stalker. But I was stalking the stairmasters, not them. When about 10 minutes passed by, I had to move on. Hard. I went to one of the Precors where it's like an elliptical but more of a running motion. I never feel comfy on those so I tried and then left. I went to the treadmill instead. I watched a documentary on the Weather Underground on Prime but it was poorly done, so it made the treading not so pleasant. A good show can make all the difference. I got off not feeling the exalted way I feel when I get off the stairmaster. Next time I will add an incline.

Thanksgiving weekend is a bit quiet at the gym. I think people are away or with family. I love having four days in a row to sleep in and go to the gym.

Peace and love, exercisers!

In unity. Even though part of me wants to go into the Plyo room when no one else is there and try until I get it. There was added angst at being in a room full of people who, I am sure were not watching me as they are all working out, but still...

Oh, yesterday too, while I was waiting for my room to open I watched a woman who was kneeling balancing on a Bosu ball while lifting like, really big weights over her head. She's my new hero.

Last night: Took my daughter to the gym so she could get a student 30 day pass for while she's home on break. Then we took a spin class together. It started off fun but it kind of kicked her ass and she's not one to give herself a break. So I started pulling back a little and took a couple "breaks" to drink water because I knew if I didn't she wouldn't and she needed to. As soon as I sat down and grabbed my water bottle she did too. Now I'm getting ready to go back for a 9am class and she's still in bed, where she needs to be.

Sun. Dec. 2nd, 30 min. on the stairmaster

Sat. Dec. 15th, 35 min. on the stairmaster

This time of year is generally hard for me. The holidays are somewhat overwhelming to me as well as to the people I work with (teenage families), so it's a lot. Added to that, and often what comes with this time of year, I have been on antibiotics and steroids for a sinus infection. Additionally my husbutch / wife has been sick with a bad cold. Now we are both finally better. However, while she was sick, I slept on the couch to avoid germs, and now my back is full of kinks. I'm hoping time and exercise will clear those up.

I have one more week before my break. That winter school break (a M-F and then a M-T) will be a great time for a staycation exercisecation connection back to me and my body.

I'm inspired reading about others' exercise. Move it or lose it. Love ya all! Oh, and I'll be back later after I go to the gym to tell you all about it.

Tonight my work-out plans started out stressful but ended positively.

I started out by forgetting my phone and having my ipad not be working. I felt so frustrated. I just sat down on the floor of the gym against the wall and got teary as I tried to make my ipad work. Eventually it did.

Then I did 35 minutes on the stairmaster. I could only get youtube to work on my ipad so I watched "Judge Judy full episode." And, really, what can be better than that? So it all worked out okay.

Also, without having my phone, I read the NY Times in the locker room instead of look at my phone. It's good to shake things up, but takes a minute, because I thrive on routine.

Just do it!

My winter recess has started so I have this week off, plus Monday and Tuesday of the week after. Hallelujah! Yesterday I just slept because I was so exhausted from all the work of the holiday week before break.

Today I went to the gym and did 35 minutes on the stairmaster, pattern: 2 minutes each of levels 6 down to 1, repeated 3 times. As I go lower on level I allow less weight on hands/arms, and then on 1- I do no hands/arms at all. I haven't done balance work for awhile and need to start reintegrating that into my workout on the weight floor.

Then I did 35 minutes on the weight floor: 100 pelvic tilts (knees bent, 5 seconds), 100 5 second sit-ups, weight lifting (arms and legs), yoga, and stretching. It all felt great. The gym was fairly empty.

Wishing everyone some great workouts!

Went to the gym Monday and Tuesday- modified holiday hours worked for me.

Monday: 40 minutes stairmaster, pattern- 2 minute repeats of 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 on the stairmaster that functions one level lower (i.e. is one level easier) than my favorite, which was occupied. 30 minutes weight floor.

There was a young to middle aged trim Asian man on my favorite stairmaster. He had a warm, positive disposition, and I felt like we had a bonding moment of loving the stairmaster when I stepped up so we were both at the top of our stairmasters and he said, "We are a small group who must have the stairmaster, but there's nothing like it! Let's do this!" OMG, it was just the best gym connection ever, made me feel so understood and encouraged.

Then in the locker room I ran into Judith. This was on Christmas Eve. I know she goes to church so I asked her what she was doing for Christmas. She said she'd be at the gym. Oh, Judith :rrose:. She was very mismatched today. More and more I think she has Aspergers Syndrome or something like it. She said she had just taken a pilates class and that she was now going to order dim sum. What?! To the gym?! Yes indeed. I was fascinated! First of all, the gym has it's own cafe (a terrible cafe!) so I figured you couldn't just like order a pizza and certainly not dim sum! But, yes, Judith explained, it was a normal occurrence for her. It was SO Judith.

Tuesday: 35 minutes on the hard stairmaster (my favorite one), and I upped my levels and could feel it. I did Levels 7 down to 1, my first time doing 7 as part of a pattern. I definitely felt it! I'm doing a lot of hands off for Level 1, and I can do it but can feel the uneasiness of my balance. It gives a good sweat to have to balance. Then I did 25 minutes on the weight floor. Then, back in the locker room, there was no sign of Judith. I was sad not to see her.

So, yeah, my winter break has been 3 great days in a row of working out so far! Let's do this!

Today was 30 minutes on the stairmaster (my favorite) doing two two-minute sets of 7-6-5-4-3-2-1, and then a few extra Level 1s. It was intense and felt great.

Then 30 minutes on the weight floor. It is funny how lifting a weight instantly gives energy and clears the brain. I love weightlifting after a cardio work-out. And then it makes the stretching even more heavenly.

I hung with Miriam in the locker room, the kvetchy older plump Jewish woman (me also being of a similar description though not as old). She said that she spent Christmas tending to less mobile, elderly friends. She worked out with her trainer and then was going for a slice (not having it delivered, lol) and then a massage.

Yesterday was 35 minutes on my fave stairmaster (Pattern: 6-1).

Today was 30 minutes on the Matrix which is a stairmaster knockoff that I only turn to begrudgingly. There are only two actual stairmasters, and someone else was on the second best one. My favorite one was not working properly. It's touch screen wasn't working. There is nothing worse than a touch screen not working. I unplugged it, replugged it - to no avail. I approached a fix-it guy and told him about it and he said, "Maybe we need to order a new console." Order a new console?! That sounds like it would take forever. I begged him to try and fix it, and he said he would. Actually I'm not even sure he was the fix-it guy, but :praying:. Like this is a catastrophe- I'm so attached to that stairmaster. It's my bestie.

I understand the Matrix better but our relationship still needs work. It has very steep side bars / handles that my hands can't stick to- they get sweaty and slide down. Now normally I'd put a towel but they're so vertical that a towel won't sit on them. I need something that will adhere between me and the bars. Gosh, gonna have to figure that out. Still I pushed my way through it. I did levels 1-6, mainly level 3, heart rate 155.

I have what I think is a post nasal drip, I think from dry heat in our bedroom at night. Oh, gosh. I am prone to lung things, and my lungs are definitely tight. It has not kept me from exercising but definitely makes it harder. I bought some Ayr spray / plain nasal saline spray. I hate when my lungs feel tight. Oh, body, just feel normal :praying:

I'm really feeling good about getting in a workout every day of my winter recess! Thanks, everyone, for the companionship and support!

If you have lung problems, you could try adding a swim into your exercise,"not sure about pools over there"
But swimming will stregthen your lungs, they are muscles,so working the out helps them get stronger.
Sadly I nursed an old dyke mate of mine dying of COPD,and the nurse told me she should not have put herself on oxygen as it weakens the lungs, anyway, swimming also is a great stretch.

Today was pretty much the same experience as yesterday only I was better prepared for it to happen. Sigh. The touch screen on the fave StairMaster is still not working, and the 2nd StairMaster was in use. I sent an email to the manager this evening about it. It hasn't even reached the stage of having a sign on it that tells people it's not working :fastdraq:.

So it was off to the Matrix ClimbMill. Sigh. I tried to address the steep handles (that are too vertical to hang a towel on) by dampening a towel and then putting it on, but that didn't make it stay on. I just dealt, as one does in life. I did 30 minutes, level 1-5, heart rate 155. I would still like to find a way to make the handles such that I could put my hands on them without having my hands slide down.

In regards to your suggestion that I swim, Vincent, I appreciate it but it actually seemed to have the opposite effect for me. For many years I was a lap swimmer as my primary form of exercise, about an hour a pop, and I think I breathe wrong in the pool because it exacerbated my lung issues. They actually got much better after I stopped swimming, which in fact is why I stopped using swimming as my main activity. Thank you for the thought anyway, though. It is appreciated. I will always gladly take all the advice I can get.

I saw one of my enemies today, Shelly. She is involved in gym drama and also always has a nasty look on her face. I always wear a little backpack that has my water, my ipad, and my headphones in it when I am at the gym. When the Boston Marathon bombing happened, she zeroed in on my BLACK BACKPACK and told me she'd have to complain that I was a danger. Oh, Shelly. So now I wear an adorable minions themed backpack. I was wearing it when I saw her. I gave her a big smile, and she was taken aback, so she gave me a little smile back.

Here's what she looks like and what she does at the gym: White, average weight, almost middle-aged if not middle-aged, very rough face -always scowling, medium length dark hair, a little muscular but nothing to write home about, and kind of graceless. She does pretty hard work-outs with weights and high inclined treadmill activity (among other equipment). She has an annoying, high-pitched cartoon-like voice that doesn't match her look except that both are unpleasant. She is a very consistent gym member. She seems full of anger, but so be it.

J-girl, it was likely the chemicals in the pool that hurt your lungs. Pools use really harsh chemicals and more so for public pools. The gym I lived near has a heated saltwater pool. That would be a better option if you have any of those near you.

As for myself, I'm just a really poor swimmer so even though I'm super close to one and it's good exercise, I won't use it because...well, I don't want to drown.

My exercise lately hasn't been anything worth writing home about. Mostly work related movement but it's a perfect time to get back into it. If only Mother Nature hadn't dropped a big ole present in my lap yesterday.

Boo.

Hiss.

Yesterday, I walked on the beach and broke in my new walking poles (which I bought last time I was down here) and didn't last too long, in the stormy weather. But it's going to calm down today, and so I will attempt to stay out on the beach longer, and try to walk for a couple of hours. Maybe I will be lucky and find a glass ball float or find some treasure to remind me of my stay at the beach.

After my walking exercise yesterday, I sat in the jacuzzi and it felt sooooo good. Naturally, I will do that again today after spending time out on the beach.

Tomorrow, since I brought my binoculars, I hope to see the Grey Whales (mamma's and their babies) frolicking in the ocean.

Had a workout with my trainer two days ago and I am HURTING. Oy she did me in. Like I had a hard time mopping the floor yesterday because of how sore my arms and chest are. But I find that if I take a spin class after, it loosens me up and I don't hurt anymore. So that's up on deck for today.

I have two more sessions with my trainer and then I'm on my own, which is good. I have a notebook full of workouts I can do on my own and feel like I can do it :) She's been great with teaching me how to use the equipment on the workout floor that I would have otherwise remained intimidated by.

Me N scout interval ran 80 mins on the beach, well on the promenade, not on the sand.
then went for a swim after, although Scout was "if there is no ball,im not doing it,:)"but it was nice to be in the ocean.
yesterday I did 500 metres swim, which is 10 laps olympic swimming pool here.

yes I agree regarding pool chemicals,I dont do well in indoor pools myself, the chlorine,is a bit toxic.
Obviously over there outdoor pools in winter is not possible.
I'm lucky the pool here is 5 min walk from home,so I'm hoping I get there again today, although I am feeling tired from our run.

I did 30 minutes on my second favorite stairmaster today, with pattern of levels 7 down to 1, with two minutes on each level. I was just happy it was available, given that my favorite is still broken and still with no sign. It's the holidays so maybe it's in a purgatory of sorts in regard to being acknowledged. I forgot to mention it again on my way out. Sigh.

Then I did 25 minutes on the weight floor. It wasn't too crowded. I ran into Dee, an ultra fit and lean, middle-aged Black woman who is a sharp dresser, the kind you might as well always be saying to: "I love your outfit!" Around Christmas I fucked up with Dee. We were in the elevator and I said, "I love your Christmas outfit!" She smiled and nodded a thanks, adding / correcting me with, "Holiday outfit." Oy! Leave it to me as the Jew to make a Christmas assumption! I went over it in my head for the rest of my time at the gym!

We went to a holiday party today, an open house, and I had to have the longest conversation with a stranger. That was so much more exhausting than working out!

Love ya, exercisers!

I pulled cut down branches/trees into the burn pile. Also put up all new blinds in my new house.

This might not sound like much but with my situation whew! It was a lot, especially the trees. My abdomen is sore but I’m happy I did it. I feel good. :)

Today I went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the Matrix ClimbMill.* I did levels 1-6. My fave stairmaster now has an "out of order" sign on it (progress!) and the stairmaster next to it was of course, in use.

Then I did 30 minutes on the weight floor.

In the locker room, a few of the regulars were there:

Judith- reading the newspaper
Marilyn- incessantly chattering as usual, unaware of anyone else as individuals
Miriam- wished me a happy New Years and confirmed that I'd be in tomorrow

*I just looked it up to see the spelling and saw that the Matrix ClimbMill retails for 4000 dollars. Maybe I should appreciate it more :|

I'll be doing housework as the first workout of the year. I don't want to venture into the gym just yet but need to get back to moving more so it's that and a walk outside later. Maybe I'll play with my home workout gear too. I've got balls! And cables and bands and weights too. I can do a hella wicked core workout.

Hmmmm…..

Today was 30 minutes on the Matrix Climbmill for me. Having to use it so often has helped me adjust to it, as happens in life. I even did a pattern today, and I love doing a pattern. I did Each level for five minutes from 6 down to 1. Level 1 I did without touching the sides.

I ran into one of the fix-it guys and asked for an update on my fave stairmaster. He said that it needs a new monitor and that it has been ordered. He said it can vary widely how long it takes for it to arrive, depending on whether it's in stock. I'm just glad that progress is being made, and in the mean time- I've started to improve my relationship with the ClimbMill.

Happy exercising in the New Year!

6mi on a damn treadmill...ugh!...anyway, gym was closed, so used my apt's "gym"...in any case it's the moving that is important...it was frigid out today, snowing...about 18 degrees...well running on a treadmill for me feels so strange, but am grateful that I had it to do my mileage. Have a terrific 2019 exercisers...and keep on keepin' on, Greco

I did 30 minutes on the Climbmill today.

I seem to have developed a new routine:
- go over to the two stairmasters
-See that the second fave one is in use
-Come closer
-See that the fave one still has the "out of order" sign on it
-Go to the climbmills

I did the same pattern as yesterday: 5 minutes of Levels 6 down to 1. It was great. I feel proud of myself for adjusting to not doing everything exactly the way I want. That's hard for me. Routines are so valued by me, and small changes unnerve me. I am doing good :fireman:

I'm catching up in recording my exercise. Thursday, Friday, and today (Sunday) I did 30 minutes on the Climbmill in the pattern of 5 minutes of Levels 6, then 5, then 4, - etc. - down to 1. My heart rate was 150-155. Doing 5 minutes at level 2, followed by level 1 does not create enough intensity to maintain my heart rate where I want it even if I do not use my hands/arms. So I've been holding a 2.5 weight in each hand when I get to those last 10 minutes, and that works for me.

Thursday: I came in and Judith was reading the NY Times topless. I came back after my workout and Judith was still reading the NY Times topless.

Friday: On the two climbmills next to me was a gay couple doing synchronized climbing where they incorporated skip steps and extended legs- like ballet style. It was a site to behold, very impressive.

Saturday: no exercise (rest lungs)

Sunday (today): I ran into an old friend Lakysha. She's a real talker but in a very nice way. I like her a lot. She's a chubby Black woman around my age who works in finance. She said that she likes to take a break from the gym now and then and go to a spin class that is not at the gym, like at Cyc or at Soulcycle. She suggested we do that sometime after work. She said it feels good to switch things up. I've never done a spin class. Hmmm... Anyone have any spinning advice for a first timer?

I am almost all over my latest bronchial type illness. I am hoping to get good sleep this week so that it doesn't creep back. Cuz ya know how it is when an illness is not completely 100% over and you stress yourself and it returns. I'm hoping to avoid that.

My gym has a slogan for 2019 that I'm having a hard time remembering. The one for 2018 was "Commit to something" which always struck me as funny and also pretty great. I'm adjusting to this one. It's (*thinking*): "It's not fitness. It's life." I kind of like the concept but it will need to grow on me.

I haven't taken a spinning class but my old gym had their spinning room next to the locker room so I walked by it all the time plus the owner of the gym was constantly trying to get me to do her class.

First rule of any new class, go in early and speak with the instructor and let them know you've never done the class before. They will find a bike for you and help set it up and give you tips. They actually make spinning shoes and may have some for rent, depending on the location. SoulCycle typically makes customers rent shoes if they don't have their own cycling shoes as the machines are designed for cycling shoes. If not, choose good fitting sneakers with good ridges still (not worn down) to avoid slippage.

I think it's awesome! It is loud and the music is always high energy. I would start slow to build up to the crazy stuff but it always seemed like a good time. I just never wanted to do it by myself. Having a friend there would be great.

Oooh first spin class!

Like Gemme said, have the instructor help you set up your bike. If it's not set right your ride will suck and you could injure yourself.

Your butt is going to hurt. It takes like six good rides to condition your butt to the saddle. If you have padded bike shorts wear them or you can get, without spending too much, a padded saddle cover that you just slip on before riding. It will help. But you'll still be a little sore.

Don't try to do everything the instructor says. Don't be afraid to turn down the resistance and sit and drink water. Just keep your legs going because your heart rate is going to probably be really high and you can't just stop moving, you have to slow down.

My exercise experience today will be a 6pm spin class :)

Oh, and the shoes for Spin...

Most bikes have pedals that one side has a "cage" that you can strap your foot into if you don't have the cycling shoes, and the other side of the pedal has an SPD clip for you to clip in if you have the shoes. Call the gym you are going to to check but most have an option to wear regular gym shoes. You just want to make sure you have a firm sole on the shoe.

Thanks so much for the spinfo!

Lakysha followed up today with a text linking me to her fave spin classes. I wrote back "Cool!" I'm always slow to try something new... but I sometimes eventually get there!

Today was... you guessed it: the stairmaster! I actually got to the one stairmaster that is not out of order and did 45 minutes with repeated sets of 2 min each of levels 6 down to 2. Being back on it made me realize how well I've adjusted to the climbmill. It's often a blessing in disguise to be pushed out of one's comfort zone.

I chatted with an anorexic (or maybe recovering anorexic- who knows) woman who wears lots of pretty bracelets. She let me touch them, and then she said, "Where are your bracelets?" I hemmed and hawed.

Peace out, exercisers!
