Going hiking today! :)
Now I just have to do Sophie's choice and decide which dogs should go with....

Seldom visited...that's the best part about it :) I've been hiking here since I was 19. I could re-write the trail maps! lol
I've gone and done it. Made a command decision about the gym. Cancelled the membership.
Even with all the tearing up and construction the last couple of months I've still been managing to get out on the beach regularly and make it to the pool frequently too.
My issue seems to be exercising indoors. It just doesn't seem to happen for me. I have a home full of goodies from 20+ years of physio and and plenty of room to do things right here. I was thinking location would help, having somewhere to go and something to do when I got there. Nope, my lazy streak overrides that too.
So, I think what I need to do is get off my bum here at home and use what I have and with the substantial amount of money I will save I can easily increase my pool visits.
New plan, it's the implementing that's a bitch.

We have sunshine today! *YAY* :)
Yesterday, I went to a favourite shopping district, and walked up and down streets, window shopping, I even stopped at a cafe I use to frequent and got myself a Mexican Mocha, several papers and sat by the window reading and recharging my energy.
This morning, when I rose for the day, I could tell it was going to be a perfect fall day, so I walked to a nearby golfcourse and walked up and down their joggers/walkers path (it's a 2.5 mile loop) for about 3 hours (7 miles?), then continued my walk home, which rounds it up to a ten mile walk! My legs are on fire.
Maybe by the time I get back home from my day, I will have walked about 15 miles. It's soOoOoOOOooo gorgeous today: There's *Sunshine*, the last of the leaves on trees are brilliant yellows and reds, bare tree limbs are becoming part of the visual candy on foggy, crisply cold mornings....
But, Today? Sunday? We're going to have 66 degrees of Sunshine!

glad I achieved my personal best but really can't move, lol. I am feeling the swim in my abs. It is actually a good feeling to feel them tightening up and my legs feel like jelly but I see the shape of my body tightening up and I like seeing results to my hard work. Still look like an old lady, but a trimmer one?

Yesterday after a very busy work week I felt like I might be coming down with something, but with some rest, I rallied and had a great gym day today. I did three hours on the Beast, Level 10, 1 hr strength, 1 hr hill interval, 1 hr strength (that order). I watched Dance Moms. Sometimes it's nice to watch people engaged in a physical challenge while I am doing the same. Jill was on her favorite elliptical which happens to be right behind my favorite Arc Trainer (providing for an ongoing waft of her perfume as I exercise).
I admit that I called someone out at the gym today. Perhaps I was a bitch to do so but I did. I *think* it was someone from the hotel next to the gym (They get free passes.). She was a gorgeous young woman on the Arc Trainer next to mine. She was not using the Trainer but instead sitting on one of it's side railings facing me and just watching television. She was engaged in a productive cough and not covering her mouth. She was also wearing one of those mud face masks where you let it dry and then peel it off, like an exfoliating type deal. She started to pick it off and drop the horrid bits right onto the carpet. I didn't like the idea that someone would have to clean up these skin like dirty peels of hers. She was also doing a subtle flick of them into the air, and along with her hacking cough, I felt myself leaning as far away as I could, but she wasn't picking up on my reaction. This was probably because she was also on the phone (She had a pretty, foreign accent which is part of why I figured she might be one of the guests of the hotel next to the gym, in addition to never having seen her before.). It all got to be too fucking much. I said to her, "Maybe you should go do that in the bathroom because it's falling on the carpet?" [the zombie like removal of the face mask]. To her credit, without a word (maybe a little huff at most), she left (I means, hers would be a hard case to argue). Later she briefly reappeared on a tread mill in a row ahead of me. I tried to figure out what her deal was. She looked like a model, just strikingly tall and beautiful. I imagined that perhaps she had a terrible cold but just had to do her thing (work out, exfoliate, whatever). That probably wasn't the case but when on the Beast too long while watching a reality show about dancing ten-year-olds there is not much to do besides muse about the people at the gym in my line of vision. I wonder if I'll ever see her again.
After the zombie model left, a regular parked herself on the Beast next to mine. She looks very much like my friend Island Scout. In fact it's almost uncanny. She's very pretty and always -always- has a big smile (not true of Scout, though she does have a nice smile). She was teaching a man next to her, a friend or something, how to use the Beast. She put in her weight, and the man and I both watched her do it: 130. The man said, "You really weigh 130? It must be all in your breasts." The man and I looked at her breasts, which were nice and full and seemed to smile just like her. She said, "I've got muscle." She kept her smile.
Then I did an hour of weight lifting, abs, and yoga. I stayed in the section with no music and no television and no conversation. Bliss.

Bloody brilliant mate! Save the money, you'll get just as slim/fit.
I'm currently indulging in a wee experiment. Whilst I have real strong cycling legs to start with, I;m aiming to further increase that strength.
Yassee, I have that pesky lung disease thang and it turns out that my body can do way-way-way more activity than my lungs can cope with.
The experiment is to ascertain if even stronger legs and core muscles can help the lungs work that little bit less, then I may not feel like I'm gonna pass out and die when going fast or up inclines.
So, it's squats and planks at home whilst watching Sons of Anarchy or other such trash telly :cheesy:

You are quite correct. Besides, if I hadn't already done it, Jennifers 'zombie model' encounter would have pushed me the rest of the way.
A stronger core makes a happy body pretty much no matter what yer doin'.

I survived both classes, but I was very tired and very sore afterwards. I tweaked the Deep Water workout by using (foam) resisters and I could barely hold up the little storm window that Pete was installing on our little kitchen window yesterday afternoon. I went to my usual stretch and Group Power classes this morning and I had to take off a couple of little weights; my arms were so sore and tired.

Since it was a school holiday today, I got in a nice, long work-out at the gym. I did the Arc Trainer, Level 10, for 2.5 hours, with 1 hr of the strength program, followed by 1 hr of the hill interval program, and a final 30 minutes of the strength program.
Jill was next to me on her Arc Trainer. It seems to always be a school holiday for her. She was doing her thing where she wears a wool cap like one wears if it's winter or the individual is very hip. It offers a little variation for her from her usual baseball cap.
While on the Arc Trainer, the zombie model was nowhere to be seen. There was one woman on a Stair Master who was doing that thing where the person has headphones on and bursts out in excessively loud song. It's more common than one might think.
As I finished my time on the Beast, one of the basketball court regulars came up to me and said, "You have two little kids, right?" Of course, I had to say, "No, I think you've confused me with someone else." He nodded and walked off. Then I wondered if my imaginary two kids behaved badly yesterday during family day at the gym. It'll remain one of life's little mysteries, like how old Jill is.
Then I did an hour of weight lifting, abs, and stretching. I've settled back into the "uncool" area of the gym for this, the area where there is no music and it has not been redecorated for thirty years. I realize I feel much more at home there. I like to just count in my head to go with each exercise. It's very calming.

Hi All,
New to this thread but hoping to be encouraged by reading what all of you are experiencing. I turned 49 in September and for the most part have spent the last 22 years of my life overweight. I use to say I had no time for exercise. In some ways, being a full time mother and also working full time that was a bit true. I know, they say, fit in 3, ten minute walks. Well, that all sounds good but not easy to do and maintain. These days while looking for a job I have nothing but time on my hands. Joining a gym is not possible (see the reference to a job in the previous sentence), nor would it be wise because I don't really like working out in gyms. I have supported many a gym over the years by paying for a membership I used a handful of times.
I am looking for suggestions of things I can do outside, for the most part. I live in a somewhat rural area in North Carolina that doesn't have walking/bike trails and I don't own a bike. I am in good health so have few limits. Anyone have ideas they would like to share?
Thanks!
Yesterday I did all the things I told myself I should do. WOW! I am sore to say the least.
NO gym even though I still have access for another 30 days (it's not like I was going anyway). I had gone around the place for the last couple of days deciding things like 'this is where I will do the push-ups' and so on in various places I have added a little bit of what I might need like a pull up bar in a doorway, a rolled up mat in the corner over there, couple of resistance bands tied off over at the end of the hall, that kind of thing. Now I have a circuit of sorts.
So, morning, mid-day and evening I walk around and stop off at each 'station' and do a set or two of 15 reps per. By the end of the day I had done 45-90 reps of each major bodyweight exercise without really noticing it too much. Just add my walk or swim and I'm good for the day. I can ramp that up pretty easily.
I think I just had to set things up right so that it isn't a big deal to get out and put away things. Not that there is much to it, maybe it is just having the reminders here and there.
We will see.

I'm going in Kelt's direction and doing my own thing.
I know what my weaknesses are and what I need to fix. I know what goals I hope to obtain. Sooo who better to train me than me??
I do use free weights...and I do get some good cardio...and I will get more soonly. Gonna start the couch to 5k thing...
AND I'm considering riding my bike to work...since I'm working more locally now... :)

Welcome!
You have a lot of options. Gyms are good and have their place but some folks, Kelt for example, prefer to be outside.
Some things you can do outside of a gym are: walk, run (long distance or sprints), strength training (buy a couple of weights when you can but in the meantime use big cans of food or other cylinder shaped objects in your home), jump rope, skip, plyometrics (jumping over a stick from side to side, for example...or jumping up onto a low surface....great way to sweat!), exercise videos from your local library, sit ups while watching TV, hiking, creating your own obstacle course with fences/rocks/clotheslines/etc.
Lots!
Good luck and have fun!

Good Afternoon, PwrFemme,
Greetings and Belated Birthday wishes to you and Welcome to our online community (The Planet).
You mention that in your area that there's no walking or bicycle paths and that you live in a rural area and you also mention the idea that taking ten-minute walks 3x/day might be a good way for you to increase your exericise activity. I don't know if mobility issues might be a barrier issue for you, but sometimes arthritis (in my bones and joints and connective tissues) are issues for me -- which impacts my ability to increase levels of mobility and overall pleasure of getting in some extra exercise. I have good days and not so good days, which depends on current weather conditions.
Also, I don't know what kind of resources are available in your area or what kind of resources you already have at home, but because we get lots of inclement weather here (Pacific Northwest - Portland, specifically), I have ways of incorporating a bit more exercise: For example, I have a small indoor trampoline and listening to music and dancing (a combination of any kind of jumping or 'twist and shout' kind of moves, etc) is one way I am able to work off some pent up energy and I love to do that, as long as I feel I can 'work out' on my trampoline. When the weather is nice (summer-like) and our community pool is open, I go out to the pool and do a combination of water-aerobic-like-exercise (for a long as I can stand, without pushing it too far), then I float in the pool as a way to come down from strenuous exercise in the water. I try to find ways to make getting exercise fun and pleasurable, so I'm more likely to want to do it again because if I'm not enjoying whatever kind of exercise I get, then most likely I won't want to do it again (for awhile). Most often, though, for me, I walk a lot, which I always have in the past, but because I walk a lot, it's important for me to push past prior achievements in walking distances (safely, of course). To give you an idea: I've always been able to walk about 2-3 miles consistently, on a daily basis. I try to aim to expand past that base line distance in regular ways. On a good week, for me, if I can get in more than ten miles of walking (in a single event) and still be able to walk the next day, then I'm in good shape. *lol*
I hope the ideas I am leaving for you help :)
Most of all, I hope you're able to find some activity that is appealing to you because that's important, doing something that you find rewarding and helps you in your particular situation.

Hey Pwr
Get yourself a gym quality skipping rope. Great cardio. Fun too if you make it so. Also something you can do at home.
How about a punch-bag? Great when yer having a bad day. It's also good exercise if you give it a good errrm going over. :cheesy: I'd love one but my poor, multi operated on shoulders won't let me.
Hardest (scariest, funniest) exercise and best ever, apart from pilates, for building core muscles...learn to ride a unicycle. :| I need to get out on mine again. It's actually not too hard to step off and out of trouble quite easily, once you got a few pedal strokes going. It might take a wee while to get to that point. It feels like a real achievement once you sorta get it.
Question to all exercisers: Has anyone tried slack lining?
I haven't tried slack lining, didn't even know it was a amateur activity. Sounds like fun though. Both that and the unicycle would be fabulous for balance and core strength.
Since we sometimes miss the mark and end up with minor injuries. I wanted to share something although I'm not sure this is the thread for it. Some of you know I'm pretty far down the rabbit hole on nutrition and physio so sometimes I trip over something of interest. I have for a long time adhered to R.I.C.E as instructed for acute injury but have often wondered about the contradiction with the Asian approach of alway using heat and massage as the first line of defense on injuries. I do lots of the older approach for chronic things but there has been controversy brewing for a couple of years on this whole ice or not thing for immediate response.
I saw this video of a discussion (http://www.mobilitywod.com/2012/08/people-weve-got-to-stop-icing-we-were-wrong-sooo-wrong/)on the debate and thought I would share it. The fellow who is presenting is a PhD physio (PT) even if he doesn't sound like it. The video is 25 minutes long and also gives a simple explanation of the basics of tissue repair and the lymphatic system. There is another follow up conversation (http://www.mobilitywod.com/2013/07/community-video-peoples-weve-got-to-stop-icing-a-year-later/) that happened one year later which goes more in depth.
I case you were wondering, yes this is what I do for 'fun'.

Hi PwrFemme! Most everything I do I learned by watching YouTube videos. When I want to learn how to do something, I browse through them until I find ones that fit me. Maybe try searching "core exercises without equipment" or "cardio exercises without equipment" I would guess that any exercise you do inside, you can do outside. Good luck to you!
For me, I keep up reading this thread, but don't post so much because I just think my routines could be boring to read! But today I did my arms exercises.
3 sets of 11 reps reverse curl forearms 20lbs
3 sets of 11 reps wide grip ez curl bar 35lbs
3 sets of 11 reps dumbbell lying triceps extensions 30lbs
3 sets of 11 reps close grip ez curl bar 35lbs
3 sets of 11 reps close grip ez curl bar skull crushers 35lbs
3 sets of 11 reps dumbbell incline supinated bicep curl 12lbs
So, I hope that wasn't too boring! :|
On another note, the weather today made the osteoarthritis in my knees insanely painful. So much so, that I was afraid I would fall down at work. I googled for relief and found that The Arthritis Foundation recommended low impact exercise right before bed will help the next day. Well, I couldn't wait and hopped on the recumbent bike right after work. It really helped. I will go do some more now before bed and see what happens tomorrow!

So sore today...feel like I got hit by a truck. Does it have to hurt so bad...good, I mean! ;)
Today I'm playing around with an idea. Bear in mind I have never shot any video in my life. I just found out how easy it is on a phone. No muss no fuss for a quick cheap version of 'I don't have a giant mirror'.
Because I don't have anyone around at home, I can't really tell if my form is quite right when I am doing things. When yer gimpy form is all. So, I got a mount to put my phone on a tripod and now am wandering around to my 'stations' and taking little vids of my form.
Seems I'm doing pretty well. I love tech. :awww:

The squats experiment is working almost instantly. Having cyclist leg muscles to start with is a huge plus of course, but the 100+ squats I've been doing nearly every night for the last week or so really do appear to be having the desired effect.
Remember roller boots (the quad ones not inline)? Real good exercise there too, not to mention mucho fun. I wants me some.
Today's exercise has mostly been washing down exterior woodwork at the shop. More squats later this evening when I return from spending the rest of my social skills today. ;)

Are you doing these with bodyweight, or are you adding weight?
Are you doing behind the head or front squats? One leg, two leg?

That is kind of why I was asking Dak of the uber strong legs what kind of press/squat. I want to learn good form while I'm nekkid!! (no weights) so that as I get better the form will already be in place. I'm just using a piece of PVC plastic pipe right now.
That said, I may just do a hands behind head or on hips in favor of never adding weights at all and instead just upgrading later to one-legged press/squat to spare my back the loading when I'm really just wanting to work legs.

In all the gyms I've worked in, way back in the day when I was a real athlete and trainer, weight or no weight, it's a squat.
In my particular case at the moment I'm doing 3 or so sets of 20-25 with just body weight but changing foot position for each set. In the last couple of days I've added some weight...in a rucksack, strapped snugly for a couple of added sets of 20-25. If I still owned an olympic bar I'd use that (it weighed 20kg on it's own) but alas those body-building days are over and I let all the kit go many moons ago.
A simple ole broom handle is a good substitute to get used to working with a bar and front/back positions.
I use both legs, my days as a flamingo are over! ;) Not to mention my knees don't play the game solo...they're a duet at all times.
Good form is keeping a straight spine and not allowing yer knees to go below 90deg.
Arms: Usually behind head, held out front or some such. Might even do some sort of chest flye style arm moves if I feel like it.
In between sets I stretch out m'hams; as a daily cyclist they get real tight.
In between each couple of sets, if I'm feeling inclined to give m'self pain, I'll throw in a 60-90sec plank or two.
I choose to do this because it's something I can do whilst home, watching trashy tv later in the evening. ExMrsD and me used to do 500+ crunches per CSI episode :cheesy:
I'm loving the incremental benefits already. Hopefully there'll be a positive effect when the inevitable next chest infection settles in.

I have started walking on my 15 min breaks again and it feels great!! I have also cut back on my soda again as I was beginning to drink more and more of it. Replacing it with cold water is helping cut that craving.
When I feel stressed I drink cold water... that seems to help invigorate me as well. The morning binges of chips and sweets have been replaced with healthier eating... I have lost 4 pounds since Monday but it could have been water lol.
When I get paid again next week I want to get back into Yoga again but for now I need to try to focus on doing it at home.

More squats later this evening when I return from spending the rest of my social skills today. ;)
I read that roller skating (in a rink specifically I think, for some reason), is THE best exercise of all...when it comes to fat/muscle burning/calories/full body exercise, etc. I saw a recent article. I will look for it.

I've seen a couple of such concepts over the years. It looks like great fun too. The fixed upright position would sure make the whole operation so much easier.
The Skatecycle looks fun in and of itself and I'd love a go but for myself I prefer the challenge and core workout of the rather more unstable one wheel.

I don't think it's a case of moving towards using a unicycle. When you take the seat stabiliser away and the front stabilisers it's a vastly different story. Of course the ones in the videos aren't unicycles.
The way I started to learn on the uni, was in my hallway at home, holding onto walls, door jambs etc., just to get the feel of being unbalanced in every direction and learn how to sit in the seat. Seriously, learning to just let yourself relax into the banana seat is a skill in itself. I still can't mount the uni without holding onto something...I'm a wuss and can't quite let myself do a free-mount with the inherent risk of face-planting hard, or ripping the skin of yer shins if you have metal pegged pedals. :| ...although I do a free-mount when doing rola bola and that's really scary too.
Now we've moved into the shop and have space outside, I shall be practicing again the small 20in wheel (when time allows) with a view to moving onto the 24in wheel again. One day (when I've bought full shin pads and a bubble wrap suit ;)) I'm gonna learn that free-mount.

I've found it helpful to search online for workouts. Youtube has a variety of full length workouts....including tae bo :| I remember that one.... :)
There's a site The Daily Burn that does different workouts also...

I gotta say, this take a vid of what I'm doing might be one of the better ideas I've had for myself. This morning I turned on the phone and let it run while I did my morning stretches and caught several form issues. Stuff I wouldn't notice if turning my head to look in a mirror (don't have one anyway).
Kind of like having a detached observer across the room. I can then go to my chart that shows how X is supposed to look and see small stuff like a tipped pelvis or rounding of my shoulders part way through something.
I'm not self conscience because a) nobody is around, and b) I know I am the only one to see it and I can delete if I want to. I might transfer to the 'puter for future comparisons after practicing changes.
Today is a light day because I have appointments. So, morning stretches and I will work in a couple of rounds of my 'stations'. No beach walk or swim today.
Oh, I also blew through another pair of shoes yesterday. Thank god for Zappos, free replacements due to arrive today.

So, I switched up today (exercise wise, lol). Not sure I am getting this ok cupid thing but my date had too many errand to run so bombed out on me. That gave me more time to either stay in the gym and work out, or, go home and clean. I think I choose the right option. I exercised. I wanted to see if going back to the machines and weights would improve my swimming.
I did 45 minutes on the recumbent elliptical, worked out on the ab machines. rowing, hi abduction (?). I did free weights and sweated. I then went to swim a mile and noticed how much easier for me to go faster and with less stress on my body. I think I will do the machines at least once a week.

It's my holiday break so I'm trying to get in some good gym time.
Today I did two hours on the Beast, 1 hr Hill Interval-Level 10, and the second hour Strength-Level 10. I watched Toddlers and Tiaras (Please don't send me hate mail :typewriter:). It's a poorly put together show. I am watching it in a series but am skipping chunks because it's just not good. I thought it might be fascinating but to my surprise Dance Moms was much better, and Dance Moms was not very good.
Then I did an hour of weights, stretching, and floor exercises in blessed silence.
I calculated my exercise for the year of 2013, and it comes out to 5 hours per week.

I have been fighting the holiday weight gain,so far I have kept it down to a three pound gain going up and down the scale, this is pretty good as I usely gain 10 to 15 pounds. What I have been doing is simply watch what I eat and how much,if I am going to be somewhere that food will be an issue I nearly quit eating anything with carbs in them for a couple of days before the event then do the same thing after. This isn't hard to do but its working so I am o.k. with it.My back has been giving me problems so exersiseing is at a minimum but I do lots of stretching to help me keep from getting stiff with arthritis.

While on the Beast, among other shows, I watched Millionaire Matchmaker, the new episode where Patti Stanger, the matchmaker herself, gets matched up. Unfortunately I stopped with 20 minutes left, so if anyone knows, please fill me in as to whether Patti ends up with the guy she picked.
While at the gym, I wore a t-shirt that read, "i-tired, there's a nap for that." I worried that it might be a conversation starter at the wrong time, but alas, no one even smiled at it let alone commented :crybaby:

Today I went to the gym and (you guessed it) was on the Arc Trainer (Level 10) for 1 hour of the Hill Interval program, followed by 30 minutes of the Strength program. I decided to give up on two t.v. series that I was trying out, one was Toddlers and Tiaras (boring) and the other was Doomsday Preppers (also boring). I was disappointed that Doomsday Preppers wasn't better. It's a show about exactly what the title says, a National Geographic series. I did learn that an INCH bag is your "I'm Never Coming Home" bag so it better have everything you need and still not be too heavy for a long trek.
Then I did an hour of weight lifting, abs, and yoga in silence. There's a hip area of the gym that plays music and has newer equipment and is where people are taken who are getting tours of the gym. Then there's another area which is my haunt, where everything is old and dusty, and it's quiet. That's where I've found my home.
I have two friends in the locker room. One is Samantha, and she is an Asian woman whose thing is taking classes. I never take classes. She's the friend I like less than my other friend, but she's the friend who was there today so that's why I'm mentioning her. She sets her mind on a few classes and then sits in the locker room in a dark corner watching television and eating sushi in between the classes. I think it's a little intense how she waits around for those classes. Today she found me in a row of lockers sitting on a bench eating an apple. She said for me to come sit with her while she ate her sushi. She said, "You're eating all by your lonesome." I said, "No thanks, I'm just having a quick apple" (It was true.). She shrugged and walked away. I felt a little guilty but I knew that if I joined her in her dark corner with the t.v., I'd end up being in that locker room for the rest of the afternoon. It's happened before...

Today at the gym I did an hour on the Arc Trainer (Level 10, Strength Program) while trying out the HBO series "Girls" (big thumbs down even though I liked Lena Dunham's movie: Tiny Furniture). Then I did an hour of weight lifting and stretching.
While I was on the Arc Trainer today, for the second time in the past few months I saw a woman (a different woman than the first) fall while running on a treadmill. It's really like a car crash when someone is not wearing the "stop" clip that turns off the machine automatically if you fall. Yikes, always indescribable to witness this, and I can't imagine how painful and frightening it must be to experience it. I think people don't use the clip because they think it will not happen to them.
Jennifer's sly tip for the day: If you see someone beside you on the work out mat doing an exercise you want to learn, get into a stretching pose where you can see them and watch as if you're staring past them lost in thought as you stretch. Super sly addition to this tip: If the person seems to notice you watching them (awkward), keep in that pose staring blankly even after they finish, because then they may think, "I guess she wasn't watching me." :hk22:

Yesterday I did an hour on the Arc Trainer, Level 10, strength program. I watched the Morgan Spurlock (the guy who did the movie "Supersize me") doc show called "30 days." It it someone goes to live with someone for 30 days who is very different from them. I watched a Mormon straight woman go to live with a gay male couple who had adopted foster children. It was a very well-done show. The woman did not change her mind about gay people having kids but it sure was a powerful portrayal of a gay family that rocked. Thumbs up, though I'm going to select only the episodes with a topic that particularly interests me.

Moving to a country town I suddenly realized I needed to find new ways of exercising. Since my move I have gained 10 pounds from my original weight lose and I am not happy about it. I have to keep in mind that I went from a very active job to a sometimes active job. Recently, I discovered a gym I like that has several locations around the city in which I work (work is an hour from home) and I have access anytime. Having 24/7 access works great considering in my line of work getting off at any particular time can quickly turn into a much later time. After I get off work I spend an hour in the gym or longer if time permits and am enjoying every minute. In fact I am enjoying myself so much- tomorrow I will be at a station 30 minutes from the gym, but still I am going to make the drive to the gym :)

I also met a trainer I like, and so will be going in for a fitness evaluation soon. I can also do my ActiveTrax there, as that is totally separate from the gym and is its own program.

The past few months, most of my exercise has come from work related activities such as general cleaning, sweeping, mopping and shoveling snow. I walked and jogged a bit but, for the most part, that's what my routine consisted of. I've decided, now that the initial rush of resolutioners have petered down, to return to the gym.
I got in 65 minutes on the treadmill, with increasing low to moderate incline and speed. A big ole guy stepped up on the machine next to me. He had at least 14 inches on me and probably a good 85-95 lbs. And he committed the 2 worst gym sins you can commit, imo. Well, to be fair, one is a pet peeve. The other is a health issue. But no matter. He did both. And that's why he got the evil eye. Twice.

Beautiful day outside - cold and clear. Packed my pockets with those individually wrapped cheese sticks, took the dogs for a long walk. Found a nice secluded spot under some trees, gave them their cheese sticks. Walking 2 frisky large dogs is always a good workout. :)

I needed to take a break from getting up at 4:30 to stretch and lift before work. I was feeling stressed and tired all the time, and it started to feel too freaky to get to the Y in the dark.
I decided to register for a few water fitness classes. I always feel good and sore afterwards, and if I work hard, I exercise a lot of large muscles, and it's great aerobic exercise. I'm always shocked when I sweat in the pool.
I also joined a yoga class that's sponsored by the Wellness Committee at school. I am very stretchy, but it's very challenging for me to hold a standing pose. I think it will get easier.
I'm also using MFP (http://www.myfitnesspal.com) to track my food. I'd been feeling kind of puffy after a few weeks of holiday cheer, and I remember feeling this way when I first started tracking my food last year.

My mom had a stroke on New Year's Eve (she didn't sustain impairment, but is at risk for another stroke and needs surgery to clear her arteries), and it scared the shit out of me.
Also last week I learned for the first time ever, my cholesterol is "a bit high" (I'm still waiting for the exact number).
Watching my dad crumple now at the end of his long illness and a partner—who became an ex—having been in cardiac intensive care for months now,
I guess I'm just saying, I am newly committed to my health in a way I've never been, though I've always exercised and had a pretty fit lifestyle.
So Jen, I'm subscribing to your thread!

Today I did 1 hr and 15 minutes on the Arc Trainer. I watched/listened to some Miley Cyrus videos (I think I have Wrecking Ball memorized.). I like good girls gone bad even if it only means lasciviously sticking your tongue out, cutting your hair short, and getting sexy with big stuffed animals. I also watched the reality show Shahs of Sunset which I kind of love: a gay guy, Reza, who I've become attached to and curvy dark Semetic women with big asses and fierce personalities.
Then I did 45 minutes of weight lifting, planks, and yoga in silence.
I socialized a bit with the less likable of my locker room girlfriends, Samantha. She's such a complainer. Today she said, "Don't you hate when people leave their stuff all over the floor?" Well, yes, I suppose I do hate it except when it's me.

Back at the gym, the Universe paid me to work out today. I found a cool quarter left in the drink holder of the same treadmill I was on yesterday. Score!
Two boys in their late teens to early 20s decided to jump off the treadmills next to me without wiping them off, which squicks me to no end.
When I was in WA and using the Y near me, I would go for a few weeks and then get sick and then get better and come back and work out for a couple of weeks and then get sick and then come back....rinse, lather, repeat....until I realized that there were quite a number of people that did not wipe the machines off when they were finished working out. Once I started wiping the machines off before and after my workouts, I fell ill far less. Lesson learned and easy enough to counter but it still sets my teeth on edge when people are not considerate of others in the gym.
So, I made sure to tell the lovely older couple who got on those machines shortly afterwards that they had not been wiped down and they did so before they worked out.
They proceeded to run me into the ground.
I love it when people surprise me.

Last night I watched a new episode of Mad Men with headphones while I used the exercycle in my apartment.
That's 55 minutes of alternating intense and less-intense pedaling. I'm drenched when I get off the bike. It's a great workout, a self-customized spin class.
I watch a digital clock and change the pace one or two minutes at a time. That's a great way to maximize the impact to the heart.
Also, I stand on the pedals at times, and since there are foot straps (wide leather ones with fake fur inside!—the bike was my dad's and it's about 50 years old if you can believe that!), I exert effort on the pull-up as well as the push-down motion.
Usually, afterwards I do some stretching, yoga and free weights, but I haven't been getting enough sleep this week and my energy wasn't as good as it usually is, so I skipped it last night.
Since I got back from my last visit to see my dad, who is in the last stages of his illness, and learned I have high cholesterol (a new development), I've really focused on exercise.
I've worked out every day for about two weeks straight. In a week I fly back down to see him again. I'll probably jog while I'm there, maybe go to the local gym if they'll cut me a deal for the week.

Today my mom had another stroke. She's ambulatory, speaking, and making choices that are not in her best interest; refusing to get more care in place for my dad—though the long-term-care policy has been activated and all it would take is a phone call—insisting instead on rushing home tomorrow morning when they release her, to clean up after his night of vomiting, because his organs are shutting down.
I called and tried to strong-arm him over the phone to get someone there himself, and he argued that he didn't need help, then said he'd call me in half an hour and tell me what he'd decided.
He did call, in exactly half an hour, but hadn't gotten through to the agency. I think he was too confused to pull it off. I asked for the number but he wouldn't give it to me.
Anyway I have a ticket to fly out there on Saturday and my sister is probably going out there in the next few days.
And after the phone calls I got on my exercycle and watched the season 4 finale to Mad Men.
Fifty-five minutes of really pushing myself; heart-pounding, sweating cycling.
Then I did a little work with the free weights on a mat in my livingroom, and then I changed out of my sweaty clothes and put on a baby blue Lanz Christmas flannel night gown, and now I'm having a mug of hot chocolate and watching a movie.

Ginger, really sad to hear of all the stress with your parents. I keep thinking how that bike was your dad's and how I hope it's meaningful to have that connection.
Today I did two hours on the Arc Trainer (level 10, strength program) and then an hour of weight lifting and yoga. I still have a pulled muscle in my back, so I have to pick only exercises that heal and strengthen and none that aggravate. I miss my routine but at the same time it's getting me to try out new things, to leave my comfort zone. There's a regular at the gym in a wheelchair and with one leg only, and he's an inspiration in that there is always a way to enjoy and benefit from movement.

One hour on stationary bike every day or the treadmill. As well as shoveling snow for an hour and a half. Bleeech!
When I was a bit younger, I ran 4 miles to work. Rode my bike to the gym at lunch where I lifted and swam for a couple of hours. As a younger gal, played tennis up to 6 hours a day and carried my bag for 18 holes of golf.
Youth is wasted on the young? Nah ;)

I wen't outside to enjoy the 70* day, then played some basket ball for an hour ,when I finely caught my breath I got a few tennis balls to play pitch with the fur kids.I promiss it gave me more exersise with all the running, throwing the ball not to mention the bending over a lot of time to get the ball.
I am back on the Adkins plan and have lost 2 1/2 pounds last week.I talked to a nutritionist then she said for me to get as high as 150 carbs a day, that's about right for three meals plus a snack, but I am keeping it at 62 to 75 carbs a day max so that is working for me just fine. Also I picked up a couple of boxes of the Adkins candy bars to snack on if I wan't something sweet,on the box it says 2net carbs on the front but on the back it says 18 carbs per bar...confusing... whatever the plan is working.I tried the zero plan but I just need more than a zero carb plan as I didn't feel well.

Thanks for noticing that, nycfem. It's true, the bike is part of the legacy he's leaving me, and I think of him every time I use it.
Right now my priority is staying healthy, rested and sober. I had signed up for a Meetup for tomorrow night but I'm canceling because I want to stick with a few trusted old friends. New people feel like to much to handle now.
Working out every day is already making me more toned and stronger. I feel like I'm preparing for battle but really I'm getting through a battle. I tell myself I'm trying to be strong enough to care for the people who need me now but really I'm working out a lot because I'm afraid of being weak, myself, with no one to take care of me. This is all making me kind of scared.

Today I ordered Shaun T's "Rockin' Body" dance dvds. I feel like I need something fun to look forward to. Hiking is pretty much going to come to an end between hunting season and winter...so I need something I can do indoors.
The plus side for me is that it teaches dance steps...I started taking dance lessons at age 4. I rather like the idea of dance and exercise combined...dancing is actually excellent brain work too! :)
I got expedited shipping, so hopefully I will let y'all know how it goes sooner than later...
I prefer to do my cardio like this too. I ordered the Hip Hop Abs and have yet to get it started! I think this week is looking good for that! How do you like your videos? I'll be starting this workout real soon after I research to combine it with some other workouts that include mountain climbers, planks, abs, push-ups, and a diet that is mostly protein, fresh fruits and veggies. That is what my exercise experience is gonna be this year. I'll also be doing stairs/steps and running preferably outside but some treadmill and fitness bike also.
Here is a question for everybody!
What kind of music to you listen to, if you do,
when you're working out?
For me, it is different for cardio and lifting.
For cardio, I listen to Pandora. "A Medley of Irish Fiddle Tunes"
Really keeps me going!
For weight training it's Rock. A Jersey Shore station that is
also on the web Rat Radio! (http://www.wrat.com/listen/indexnew.aspx)
This really keeps me in the mental zone!
Funny how different they are...!
I love my ipod when I'm working out in the gym and running. I like motivation type music like Eminem's Lose yourself, Kanye's Stronger, and personal type music for reflection like Phil Collins, Michael Buble, and Rock and Punk Rock for the fast beat. When I'm doing abs or planks I usually don't listen to anything.

Today I took a personal day from work because my childhood friend Lisa from Ohio is visiting this weekend for her work, so I wanted to spend the day with her.
I suggested we go to the gym. She knows I'm somewhat (cough, cough) rigid or quirky in my interests, since we've been friends since kindergarten. She said that she'd take a class. She's flexible like that. She then said, "But then we should go get manicures." I said, "Can I stay at the gym while you get a manicure?" She rolled her eyes, and said, "Whatever."
I only have a few precious free guest passes, so she generously offered to sneak in to the gym, and it worked. She went off to take her class, and I did my Arc Trainer for an hour (Level 10, Strength Program), then 30 minutes of the Stair Master, and an hour of weight lifting and yoga. It was so much more relaxing than going to work.
Then I called her on my cell phone to see where she was at the gym, and she said, "I'm in the dress section at Century 21. Meet me there. Now it's payback time, and you have to come in the dressing room and watch me try on clothes." I think our friendship works because she doesn't get resentful of me. She gets even. I didn't dare disobey her orders.
Tomorrow morning we are going to play basketball with the students from my school.

How are you enjoying the Tai Chi?
Well...I'm used to a combination of seated Chi Kung or Qigong. We would sit on the floor on our exercise mats for an hour and do seated moves, breathing and meditation. Then the next hour we'd work on the moves..which I think were short form.
I'm in long form and it's heavily focused on the 108(?) moves. We stand the entire time (2 hours) which is hard on me.
Comparing the two types is like comparing an apple to an orange. What I like about any Tai Chi is the mental release/relaxation I gain from just focusing in on one thing intensely.
The Yoga I'm in to strengthen my back is new to me. I've only had water Yoga before. It's been a delightful surprise.

Mother Nature has given me quite the workout over the past few months with winter and all the snow and ice we've gotten. As I type this, my shoulder and back muscles are still a bit tender. I found a new tool for breaking up large chunks of frozen snow....a hammer.
Hammer, hammer, flip it over and use the claw, shovel, shovel, shovel.
Oy.

The Mayo CLinic recommends 150 aerobic or 75 intense aerobic, and two sessions of strength training a week. Which makes like 30 minutes of exercise a day.

My participation in basketball today was sketchy at best because the school gym felt like a sauna today, and I just wasn't into working up a sweat in an already stuffy environment. High fives to my visiting friend from Ohio, Lisa, who not only played basketball but also played a mean game of dodgeball with the kids. While I did play basketball, I spent most of my time blocking Lisa which I think annoyed the crap out of her. Sorry, but I felt it was the best way I could help my team.
Afterwards, Lisa went to see some relatives, and I went to the gym. I did an hour on the Arc Trainer and then 30 minutes of weight lifting and yoga. I left feeling very much at peace.

But... I only slept 4 and a half hours.

Well, Jennifer, I use the Fitbit 1, which I carry in my pants pocket. Sharon has one and she uses a clip it comes with to clip it inside her bra, as she usually hasn't got pockets. You can track any or many things. I will just list them.
The tracker will automatically record:
steps
miles
flights of stairs (13 steps)
active minutes
sleep (including quality)
You can log the following:
weight
calories
fat
fiber
carbs
sodium
protein
heart rate
blood pressure
glucose
water consumption
I had been tracking all of my food and water consumption, and all of the automatic data. But I've taken a break from tracking food, because I've done it for years and sort of can do it now without even thinking! I think this is a really great device. My present goals, since New Years, are to sleep more and to drink more water. It's pretty funny that I am failing miserably!
I hope I've answered your questions Jenn!

I managed to drag my dimpled arse to the gym today, which is a major triumph because I so didn't want to. As usual, I feel heaps better after going. I THINK maybe I turned a corner this week and will resume progress with my weight loss. I am setting very small daily goals for myself and only focusing on each day as it comes and it seems to be keeping me on track. Have been hula hooping up a storm with the surprised and unintentional side effect of being able to throw some tricks now I always had trouble with when I hooped a few years ago. Weird, I find, but fascinating how the body stores memory so long... I have noticed this with a few things... even if you couldn't do something in the past but trained towards doing it... then didn't do it for a long while... when you go back to it, the body seems to just take that leap forward from where you left off. So cool!

Like Dapper, the storms and snow have been providing my workouts lately. Shoveling, shoveling and more shoveling. Don't forget climbing mountains of snow and ice as well as my store's 14 ft cargo truck, trying to get all the sheets of ice off the roof of it. One of them came down hard and hit my thumbnail. Such a pretty color! Not.
I had to hand dig out my gate but it's functional now. Yay! With all of yesterday's rain, I'm also doing water work outs as I trudge through the surprisingly deep puddles. Nowhere for the water to go because the old snow and ice is backed up too much and covers the natural flow path of it.
Today I get to test the roads on my weekly jaunt to the bank. If I hit an ice patch, I'll get some ab work in as my gut clenches up tight.

loaded and unloaded 3 truck loads of heavy lumber today. My dog, Kevin, was with me all day. He was the supervisor. On the way home, he insisted on stopping at McDonald's for a bag of burgers. He said supervising is a tough job and made him really hungry. LOL! Actually, he only had 3 plain hamburgers without the bread - vet said he must reduce his size by 30 pounds. My shoulder and arm muscles are tight and a little sore but in a good way. Guaranteed to sleep well tonight.
Talking about swimming I see ... I think it is probably about the best workout, not much stress on joints (forget the extreme pounding and pulling involved in some other forms of exercise. Good cardio too, I imagine.

The next five nights, I slept on a sofa in my dad's ICU room.
I think I burned calories jumping up to intervene each time he tried to pull the oxygen prongs or NG tube out of his nose—but in the end, that wasn't enough of a workout and now my muscles feel sleepy. I'm a little stiff and sore in the wrong way.
My sister flew in and took over nights at the hospital and will stay through our mom's surgery next week. I'll be back after that, and meanwhile, I vow to exercise. It keeps me alert and resilient.
Exercise and sleep will keep me strong and focused. Exercise releases sadness, somehow. When I feel strong physically I feel strong mentally, emotionally.
I flew down here with such good intentions to eat right and work out and stay strong and instead I binge ate (one day only, but still) on sweets and didn't exercise except for that one time.
Tomorrow I fly back to NYC. As soon as I'm home, I'll work out on my exercycle and catch up with True Detective, listening with headphones.
I so value my good heart rate, my healthy blood pressure, my high-functioning lungs. Most of all I am thankful for my brain, which only asks for enough time to recharge. IE, sleep. I can't squander those gifts.

nycfem: how do you concentrate on exercising and lifting and all you do for two hours. when I do machines, weights or cardio if I last combined 30-40 minutes it is victory. I rationalize it by saying...but I can swim for 1-1.5 hours. Doesn't feel as taxing.

I don't know, I think I'm just made that way. I don't usually get sore or tired or even sweat, and I get bored if it's a short work-out. I never purposely do anything that hurts my body because that's not fun for me, and everything feels good physically and mentally, almost like meditation. If I skip a period of time and then return to working out I don't require much building back up. BB has a longtime joke that the gym is my mistress :D.

I admire your ability to do that. Everyone is different. Am I the only born and breed NY'er who doesn't love walking aimlessly. But lucky for me, I do love swimming, so I swam today for an hour. However, it was a holiday and kids were swimming across the lanes and I got distracted (trying to be Zen and not say pissed but was pissed).
I do the other stuff to enhance my swimming but never feel as relaxed. Have a great week with your mistress, haha

Last night I worked out for an hour on the exercycle while I watched True Detective.
I have one more episode to catch up on, so I'll do another hour on the bike tonight.
When I get off, I'm relaxed and exhausted in a good, deep way. The endorphin high, I guess. It makes me feel like I can handle what's coming.
A massage would be good too but I don't have time right now—I'm flying back down to see my dad on Saturday. Plus sometimes massages just make people cry and I don't need another trigger. Maybe when it's all over I'll do that. That might feel good. And a steam room. I could get into that.

Does your exercycle have settings?
Yes there is a big atomic-age looking dial and I control the resistance to get my heart rate up, then let it rest, as I've always read and heard that it's the intermittent heart rate that is most effective.
The bike is my dad's from the sixties. I have his exercycle, his mounted swordfish, the pulley he made me when my shoulder went out, the cat on tracks he brought me from Germany when I was small, so many reminders of how generous he was with me, how much he cared about my quality of life and how I was doing. I hope he didn't worry about me. I realize I'm writing about him in the past tense. I told you already but to put it here, I'm leaving tomorrow morning very early to fly back, instead of waiting. He is starting to move faster to the end of his time.
I can't work out tonight.

Cycling against the gathering wind storm.
This sounds wonderful. I love the way the air feels and smells before a good storm.
Ginger, I'm glad you get some peace from working out. The physical body definitely has a direct link to the mental and emotional components. I know I have less patience with people and tire far more quickly when I'm not regularly doing something physical that's helpful.
Yesterday was a day that teetered between helpful and harmful. I got in hours of shoveling due to the surprisingly long storm. They said one inch, maybe, but I think I wound up with 4 or so. By the end of it, it was a snow/rain mix which makes for very heavy snow when I'm already tired.
My body is reminding me of everything I did yesterday. I did take a fake Tylenol before bed and got plenty of fluids in too but I would not mind a 2-3 hour nap right about now.

I suspect for folks with a sense of smell and both lungs it might be good. For me, with no sense of smell (or smell memory) and less than a full lung left it's not quite so wonderful :|

A great deal sadly. I can't do anything at speed anymore. Struggle on inclines; real hills are too much of a challenge generally. A lifetime ago I rode in the Lake District (mountainous) and surrounding hilly areas every day.
I can cycle more easily than I can walk because upon getting breathless whilst cycling the bike carries on coasting whilst I stop pedalling. Getting breathless walking means stopping to get m'breath back.
And all because I smoked cigarettes. :|

This is keeping me honest, ha ha. So I go to the gym and think to myself: I'll do cardio, machines, etc. I pass by the pool and it is empty and it calls my name. Seduces me into the liquid gold. I did 50 minutes swimming with resistance gloves, decided to do 20 minutes of swimming with weights as like a kick board and other weight exercises, swam 20 more minutes with swim paddles. And, done. Felt great, went to work and stress slides off my back

I suppose that even though we can strengthen our lungs through exercise, there is a maximum output where it just can't get any better. Is this the correct thinking to use when discussing lung capacity? Are you at your max, do you know?

Aye, I am at my max capacity; 46% last time I had a spirometry test.
Exercise helps maintain the 46% and keep it as effective as it can be. It seems to make great deal of difference doing the exercise in the open air.

Unfortunately, it's a BIG part of my job in winter. I live very close to where I work so I basically shovel everywhere. lol I can't listen to music. I'm working, so I have to be available to customers in every and any way feasible.
It would be nice to have music. That would drown out my cussing but then I'd lose volume control and my customers might hear me.
Put me down for several more hours of shoveling over the past few days. When I got home last night, I was so whupped my fingers ached to the very tips.
The bonus is that my shoulders, while still aching and sore, are not quite as sore and achy so maybe my body's adjusting a bit.

I would benefit better if I wouldn't go home and inhale too much food, but my shoulders are tight and as muscular as they can be considering how small my upper body is. It was supposed to be so easy, but they've had software and online issues with the installation of a new program so my 'fast and easy' transfer officially took me several weeks to do. It's a subset of it.
From Wikipedia:
The Lindy Hop is an American dance that evolved in Harlem, New York City in the 1920s and 1930s and originally evolved with the jazz music of that time. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family.

Yesterday was a banner day! I was off and felt pretty relaxed as I went to the gym. I spent a little over an hour there and wound up drinking my whole water bottle (I haven't done that in a while.....proves I worked extra hard).
My usual treadmill was out of order so I took the one directly behind it on the back of the treadmill row. I don't prefer that row because of the layout of the gym. My last home gym had the treadmills in the back so if you were on the back row, only the wall saw your tush wiggling and swinging. This gym is much smaller and has their cardio in the center of the building with the weight machines wrapped around, like a border. I tend to feel exposed when I work out and people are walking right behind me, which can sometimes affect my workout. Not yesterday, though.
It was time for a good one and I was ready and willing to put the effort in. I used the random program and started at level 7 and a speed of 1.8 mph, which I continuously bumped up as I warmed up. I wound up at 3.1 mph for my walking and climbing segments.
For those that haven't taken advantage of this feature on the treadmills they use, the random feature is just that....random. It'll move the incline up and down on its own and factor in rest periods for you whenever it feels like it. During those rest periods of an incline 1.5 and below, I took to doing sprints. They never lasted long.....a minute at the most and I ran between 5.0 and 5.8 mph....so I was getting adequate interval training in.
Throughout the workout, I bumped up the level a few times until I reached level 11. That gave me lots of climbing at 6.0 incline and up but still a handful of rest periods where the incline reduced to about 1.5 or so. I learned long ago not to do incline and speed at the same time, so I only ran during the low incline stages of the program and that worked out really well.
In the end, I was on it for 65 minutes, including warm up and down, and I wound up burning almost 500 calories and went nearly 4 miles. I am very happy with that workout.
Today I'm going to hit the gym after work and see how it goes. I might play with weights today.

So happy to have had this "no plans" weekend. Glad BB and I are introverts and on the same page on this!
Today at the gym I did two hours on the Arc Trainer (Level 10, first hour: strength program, second hour: hill interval program); then a combined hour of weight lifting, abs, and stretching. I was left feeling very peaceful :)

Yesterday afternoon was good. I tend to not do as well, energy wise, in the afternoon and I could feel a little bit of a difference but I decided to push myself anyway. I think it was an appropriate gamble.
No weights. I hopped on ye ole mill of tread again. 65 minutes again, at that's the maximum for these machines. I chose the manual program and adjusted the incline and speed throughout.
I broke it down into 10 minute intervals.
first 10 = warm up and gradual increase of incline and speed, plus 2 minutes of continuous running for interval training purposes. 5.4 mph
second 10 = 2 minutes of continuous running @ 5.4 mph with walking speed of 3.1 mph and regularly changing incline levels from 1.5 to 6.0
third 10 = 3 minutes of continuous running @ 5.4 mph with walking speed of 3.2 mph and incline level changes from .5 to 6.0
fourth 10 = 2 minutes of continuous running @ 5.4 mph with walking speed of 3.2 mph and regularly changing incline levels from 1.0 to 4.5
fifth 10 = 2.5 minutes of continuous running @ 5.4 mph with walking speed of 3.2 mph and incline level changes from .5 to 6.0. I took the last 30 seonds and pushed it to 6.5 mph for an added burst and, frankly, to see if I could. It worked out and I felt okay, so I added another minute of continuous running @ 6.6 mph and then the last minute before the cooldown kicked in, I ran at 6.7 mph.
I knew I wasn't planning on any workouts today so I wanted to get a really good one in. This one did the job! If it weren't for lactic acid, I'd have done even more but this is good. Over 450 cal, a hair under 4 miles. Good work!

Yesterday I got in a solid 30 minutes of cardio then headed for the free weights for 20 minutes then I took a walk at varying speeds to round things out.So far no gimps or limps.I am thinking about getting some kettle balls and some rope so I can use it in place of sit ups,I read that it could be easy'r on the back than crunchie's or sit ups being that swinging the rope's up and down like a snake was good.Has anyone hear used these before? If so your thought's on this.Oh,I did butterfly kicks for ten minutes..I can really feel that one in a good way.

Like going to gym at night while it is still light out. Hopefully will swim at least an hour. I seem to be having problems with my googles these days, Because of the shape of my face no matter what shapes or brand I get, I have to pull tight to create a seal. Then in the middle of swimming I readjust them and can never get them right. I am beginning to think that this is how I chipped a bone in my orbit

My goggle advice: dampen your face first, then press the goggles on and do not adjust them at all (not in or out of the pool- unless you are in the pool and water has seeped in), try a mask instead of goggles, go on Amazon and read goggle reviews (it's addictive and helpful), when I would do two hour swims I'd sometimes use Barracudas (unfortunately expensive) because they have foam seal instead of the rubber that gives so much pressure and raccoon eyes. Then they got stolen when I left them hanging outside the shower while I showered after swiming. Go figure. Long swims are hard with the goggle pressure. I've gotten headaches from that before. No easy answer but just some thoughts.
Today I did 30 minutes on the Stair Master (intervals, 45/50) while watching Judge Judy.

I was going to work out, do an hour on my exercycle, but I called my mom first and my dad's booming voice on the outgoing message made me jump in my chair. Then I went back to watching another episode of Mad Men, and then realized an hour and a half had gone by, and I'd forgotten to work out. So I'm going to do that right now.

Well, pretty boring report but tonight I did about 45 minutes on the exercycle. I got sweaty and my heart rate was elevated a good bit, which felt good.
I need to get back to the stretching, yoga and free weights to balance out all these aerobic workouts with some strength training.

Saturday:
Treadmill, random program, level 7, 65 minutes, 484 calories, 4.03 miles.
Interval runs in 30 to 60 second increments as it came up in the program (about 7 or 8, total) from 5.3-6.5 mph.
My legs ached on and off through the night though I stretched afterwards.
Sunday:
Treadmill, random program, levels 8-10, 65 minutes, 433 calories, 3.63 miles.
Learned that the interval runs at an acceptable incline (0-.9) are farther and fewer between in these levels. Only 3 interval runs today; 2 1-minute runs @ 5.5 mph and 1.5 incline (higher than I wanted but I had to take what I could get) and 1 2-minute run during the cooldown (0 incline) @ 6.0 mph.
No soreness as of yet.

The last two days have seen some serious kick ass walks.
Our state is building more and more bike/ped trails, many from old railroad lines. Yesterday TF, the dog, and I enjoyed one and then today just myself and the dog went on one. Yesterday it was gorgeous and over 60 degrees, while today is was 40 degrees! Crazy weather. The dog and I really kicked it up today. Super high pace. My legs are longer than TF's so without her the dog and I could really move. Mr. 8.5 year old shortie jack russell still has those fast legs. About an hour both days.
We have a lot of new paths to check out. I hadn't researched what is now available in the area because I am always on dirt trails in the woods. With the mud, I have been forced to look elsewhere. Most of them are asphalt. I do wish they were crushed stone like the Rails to Trails Conservatory uses http://www.railstotrails.org/index.html but I know there would be less trail use if that were the case. I am glad our state has taken on this task. I am tired of waiting for Rails to Trails to get here!

I've been not swimming because I think I get less colds when I don't swim. However, that may not even be true, and perhaps I'm making incorrect connections. While I'd sacrifice my gym swims for this "cold" theory, I'd never sacrifice swimming on vacations, the kind where it's simply sunshine and lazing around the pool or ocean.

Today I did an Arc Trainer that doesn't have arms (Some have arms like an elliptical and some don't, but you can do your own arms.). I did it for 1.5 hrs (level 10, hill interval program) while holding 2.5 lb weights in each hand. This made the work-out much more fun. Then I did 30 minutes on the stair master (45/50 intervals). Then I did a combined hour of weight lifting, core strengthening, and stretching.

I agree with barracudas. However, as re: previous posts, we do not have anything with latex foam enter our homes and cares, etc. because when the protein in the latex starts to disintegrate the particles get in the air and daughter starts to have a reaction.

Saturday
Hill program, levels 3-10, varying incline.
338 cal, 3.15 miles, 65 minutes.
Nothing stood out, except I'm really getting annoyed that this gym is so hot. The beiling fans are on the slowest setting possible and they've arranged it so none of the vents line up with any of the machines. There is little to no moving air when I'm on the machines and they do that so you'll sweat more and feel like you're working out very hard, I'm sure. I hate to sweat and I work out harder when I have a breeze on me. I'm going to have to get one of those personal fans with a clip and clip it to the front of the machine. It'll only take, oh, about 100 batteries to run. Sheesh.
Sunday
I felt pretty puny but still went to the gym. I did a short 1.5 minute interval run and then proceeded to get a stitch on my ride side, at the rib cage. Then one on the left side, just under the bottom rib. Then, again, on the right. Different spot though. Between feeling unwell and the sharp little pains, I was 2 seconds away from just leaving but I decided to stick it out. I drank more water than usual and stretched my diaphragm and worked the stitches out. A little more than halfway into the workout, things changed. I still felt a bit under myself but I decided that, as long as I was there, I might as well give it my best effort. It wound up being a pretty good effort by the time I was done.
Random program, Levels 5-10, increasing levels at 10 minute intervals. Interval runs on 0.0-1.5 incline, 5.6-6.9 mph.
456 cal, 3.80 miles, 65 minutes.

I got to the office at 6:00 am this morning, so I thought I'd leave work early to go for a run through the forest while the sun was still shining. The trails were muddy but not icy. The snow on the fields sparkled. I could have sworn I heard a black-winged blackbird. I must have been imagining that. It felt good to be out on the trails again after a week of running on asphalt. :)

Yesterday, the only exercise I did was doing crafts while sitting on the couch and talking about my weekend exercise with my chiro.
Tonight, I expect to get in a quick half hour after work. I might be off on Wednesday. We'll see what the weather channel says about that storm rolling in. If it's going to dump more snow than my employee's comfortable driving in, I will work Wednesday since I'm closer. Otherwise, I'll have Wednesday off and will get in a good workout that won't involve shoveling snow and ice.
Next week, I work every day so I'm trying to get in something every day now because I know I'm not going to really feel up to it during a 10 day stretch.

It's nice to see Jill, the gym-obsessive, bounding about the gym as always. I wish I could take a photo of her and post it here. Then I swear you'd say, "Wow, no wonder you always mention her. Still I feel comforted by her presence, the way one does in seeing something familiar and thought provoking.

Why doesn't she like you, do you think? Not, why do you think she doesn't like you, but assuming you are correct, what's the reason that she doesn't/wouldn't?
I don't know you off the board, but you present as someone who would be non-judgemental, open, non-threatening, etc, so it makes me curious Maybe your simple presence of "openness" so to speak, makes her feel too vulnerable, threatened. What's your theory?

Dapper, you ask great questions. Are you a therapist? ;)
I don't know why she doesn't like me or even if she really doesn't like me. All I can do is muse about it. And there's a lot of time to do that working out next to someone at the gym for hours. Maybe I'm not cool enough. Maybe I look at her too much. Maybe she picks up on the fact that I get that there's something strange about her, and my eyes read her in a way that feels threatening/invasive. Maybe she's a guarded person and just ignores people until she knows them through something.
I felt like we had a moment of connection one day recently but it could have just been a mirage, like being in a desert and thinking you see water because you are in such desperate need of it. I had plugged in a dvd player in a way that would trip people. That sounds terrible but I was trying out something new and didn't realize it would do that. So Jill was the first person to trip, a minor stumble. i called out, "Sorry!" thinking it was not set up in a way that would trip everyone, maybe just that one time with Jill. So then Jill got on a piece of equipment nearby. Then this guy came off the basketball court and totally tripped (did not fall but it was a much more major tripping than Jill). I said, "I'm so sorry!" and the guy was embarrassed and also irritated and ignored me. Then I got off my machine and remedied the way I had the cord set up. Anyway before I got off the machine Jill seemed to chuckle at the guy tripping over the cord. However, maybe she was actually chuckling at the t.v. program she was watching. I tried to catch her eye and chuckle with her, not because I thought it was something good to do to laugh at someone tripping because of my stupidity (btw, it was a silent type chuckling that he could not see), but because I was taking my bonding with Jill in any way I could due to its short supply.
Sorry for such a long answer. I was struggling with an answer I don't really have.
