Today broke me with heat as far as exercise during the day. But after I got home from work and cooled off I spent a couple of hours up on scaffolding scraping my ceilings to get ready for patch and paint and I'm counting that as exercise.

I spent a couple hours walking around, spraying the weeds at work. It was disgustingly hot and humid and I definitely needed a shower afterwards. I guess that qualifies as exercise.

Tomorrow's going to be killer. 107 with the heat index. Please hydrate!

I went swimming at the health club today for 30 minutes, and feel like my arms are falling off. It felt so good, though! I also found out they have a nutritionist there for much less than an outside one, so I think I can get back on track.

Today I did 40 minutes on the stairmaster. It was an intense workout. My pattern was:

Levels 7 down to 1, 2 sets, 2 minutes each level (except for levels 3 and 2 which I only did for 1 minute to even out the set)

Levels 7 down to 1, 1 set, 1 minute each level

Cool down on level 1.

I saw La La before and after my work out, both times in the locker room. Both times she was in a fluffly white robe. She looked cute. I kept my headphones in and waved to her.

I only have one more day of working out this week because then I have work training for most of this week and next which will be quite time consuming.

Today I did 35 minutes on the stairmaster. I pushed myself to try something new on the stairmaster. I tried to do as long as I could without touching the sides for balance or to distribute weight. I got to 21 minutes, all within Level 1 and 2. My left leg is so much stronger than my right. That was quite noticeable. This was definitely not an easy work out, though it did take a long-ish time to get my heart rate up. After 21 minutes I had to start using my hands or my form would have suffered due to exhaustion. It was nice to experiment, though I can't say I enjoyed it much. Still, always proud of myself when I alter any routine!

A not so funny thing began to happen to me, about two weeks ago. My legs have been killing me and when I went to shower one night while back, I noticed I had these big splotchy purplish, dark blue bursts deep in my calves. There are some too, down by the soles of my feet and around my ankle area. My legs are still killing me, but I made an appt with my primary physician to see if these splotches are broken blood vessels or veins bursting in my legs.

But I keep walking up and down stairs at work. I also go for 40 minute walks on my lunch hour, after eating a small salad for lunch.

I also walk in the evening, in the nearby fields, which have walking paths around them. I don't walk very fast, but I do walk at a pace which sometimes can leave me in a sweat and so, when that happens, I just take a little rest and slow my pace down.

I've also been lifting leg weights with my legs. It's those little weights that fit around your ankles, maybe 2-3 pound weights. I often practice trying to lift each leg when I'm on my back in bed, but I can't do it for long or for a long time. I just keep practicing that tiny little exercise, so I can help my legs get stronger? I can't do it for long because it hurts my lumbar area, but I try to do it anyway. My goal is to build up my endurance with this type of small scale weight training.

That's all I got tonight, except to say that it gives me courage to break from my routines when I hear nycfem talk about breaking up her workout routines.

I have not exercised for the past two days. The last time I exercised was Tuesday, July 23rd of this week. On Tuesday I went for a 45 minute walk during my lunch break. With that plus my regular steps to get to and fro, I had 10K steps on my iphone. My training was in a new neighborhood, so it was cool to go for a walk and look around.

I have not exercised since Tuesday July 23rd. Today, August 4th, was my first day back! I was busy with this two week all day training in Brooklyn and suffered from cumulative loss of sleep. Whenever I get very busy, that is an issue for me.

Today I did 25 minutes on the stair master. I would have done longer but I accidentally ended my workout program (hit the wrong button). That is always the worst feeling!

My pattern was 7 down to 1, two minutes each level, almost 2 sets.

My heart rate was quite high, 160s.

Afterwards in the locker room I ran into Taylor. Actually we worked out a few machines away from each other but didn't talk to each other which I was so relieved about because it's very hard to have a conversation when one's heart rate is in the 160's.

We ended up having a long talk afterwards in the locker room. I'm still trying to track down who her billionaire is (who she works for as his house manager). She told me that she was mad at a friend of hers who knows the real name of the billionaire because she alerted Taylor to a gossipy type article that mentioned one of his girls who he sees, and the girl said that he told her that he is going to marry her and have his children and that he has spent millions of dollars on her. Taylor said, "Probably only about 20 thousand." She said that she knows the girl (woman) and that she's bipolar and that she (Taylor) is sure it's not true and that Ross (her fake name for the billionaire) denies it. Taylor is still certain that Ross only sleeps with her even though he has a rotation of about 4 or 5 young women that spend the night and sleep in his bed with him. Taylor said that Ross said that in September he will start talking to her about a timeline for when he will leave his wife.

Taylor looked super skinny today. I would estimate 90 pounds at most, probably 85. Her shoulder bones were jutting up. I asked about her weight and she said she was status quo. She's 35 but she looks about 17 years old. She got annoyed with me for asking about her weight.

She told me about how a friend of hers said to her, "How do you know that Ross won't just abandon you?" Then Taylor started crying and said she was so mad at her friend for being so negative. Then she said that her father sexually abused her all her life and abandoned her when she was 13. Then she cried some more. She said she is dealing with her traumas with a new therapist.

She said, "Thanks for listening to me." I said, "Taylor, you're my favorite person at the gym." She said, "Awww, don't..." like all sweetly. I wish I was her favorite person at the gym but two others at the gym (one being Hillary) she's referred to as her best friend. Harumph!

Oh, and she also told me that they continue to have unprotected sex but that he pulls out. She really hopes to become pregnant by him and said she would definitely have his baby.

Oh, and she said that if he abandoned her that it would mean everything was a lie, and then she cried and cried.

Poor Taylor :praying:

Oh Taylor, that is so sad and we all know this isn't going to end well. That's so hard to watch go down. I'm glad she's in therapy.

I won't have time to work out before work today so I will likely either take a ride tonight or use the rower. I haven't used the rower in a couple of weeks!

Today I walked to the gym, which is about 30 min. / a bit under 5000 steps.

Then I did the stairmaster for 35 minutes. My pattern was:

levels 7 down to 1, 1 set, 2 min each level

then repeated sets of levels 7 down to 1: 15 seconds for levels 7, 6,5,4 and then one minute each for levels 3,2, and 1.

My heart rate was in the 160's and it was a good workout.

I was really tired from not enough sleep, but when I get on the stairmaster and rev it up, my body and mind quickly change as if I'm being chased by a bear and I'm able to rise to the occasion.

Today and yesterday I saw Judith in the locker room. Yesterday she was cleaning her plate and cup from home that she uses for her take-out that she eats at the gym. She was wearing plastic gloves. It was a very sophisticated operation. Today she was about to head to a spin class and was wearing orange Diesel sneakers paired with an orange top. I complimented her matching orange, and she told me she has about 10 pairs of Diesel sneakers, I think in different colors so she can match- which is funny, because she is a little wild when it comes to what she puts together to wear. She has a style that's kind of busy patterned, bright colors, and a little off.

Easygoingfemme, how long does it take you to do 30 miles on your bike?

NYC- some depends on terrain and my mind set but usually between 2-2 1/2 hours. I'm not a speed racer on my bike. I've decided that the next time I'm in the city I want to go to the gym with you :)

Today I went to the gym after 11 days of not exercising. I had this gap because I got hired for a new job and became overwhelmed with everything I needed to get done. Then I had trouble getting back on the healthy bandwagon. So here I am! I walked to the gym which is about 30 minutes. Then I did the stairmaster for 35 minutes with the pattern:

Levels 7 down to 1, 2 min each level, 2 sets
Level 1 for the remainder of the time

It all felt great.

I hung out for quite awhile in the locker room with Taylor. She took off her bra in front of me which she doesn't usually do. Usually she kind of hides herself and she didn't today.

While we were talking I got like two text messages, and she was a bit harsh on me, saying, "Why do you keep your cell phone on? Do you need the attention?" In my head I was like, "Whoa!" but I said, "Sorry," and switched it off. What was over-the-top is I wasn't even looking down when I received each of the two texts. I was acting as if nothing which I considered to be classy. Furthermore, when I received them she was like, "Is that my phone?" and I had to say, "No, that's my text tone."

She also gave me a bit of a hard time, as she always does, about me eating organic protein chips. Like, yes they are processed but they are still pretty healthy. She always tells me to have a handful of blueberries or some nuts. Today she asked why I eat them. She said, "Are you hungry?" I had to think for a minute, and I said, "I guess it's sort of a ritual." She seemed fairly pleased with that answer. Then she took a look at the nutritional information on the bag and said, "They're not that bad." I felt relieved to have her semi-approval. She was holding but not eating an apple. She said she needs really small apples because regular sized apples are too filling :vigil:

I love seeing Taylor, and today was no exception.

Post work 5k row. During the day I exercised my patience a lot.

How long does it take you to row 5K? I've never rowed so I'm clueless.

I totally get exercising one's patience. I really do.

I can't say much because this IS a public board, but I will say that it's taken a fuck ton of my emotional energy to not take the bait with the person who harasses me and bullies me at work, while that person does essentially nothing but come to work late, leave work early and helicopter's me constantly on the job, and seemingly with the stamp of approval from our work site supervisor.

But I will prevail. I will not let this injustice go (all forms of harassment, including the first instance of sexual harassment, right in front of the site supervisor).

I'm resting today, but Labor Day Weekend I plan to go walking, probably with friends, out on the coast.

A 5k row takes about 25 minutes.

Yesterday I biked 25 miles in an hour and a half. I don't usually check the time so I must have been off on my calculation from a week or so back. And it was super hot and humid out and I was not going at my normal pace because of it.

Today I did 40 minutes on the stairmaster. I had not slept well the night before so it was a real challenge, and it felt great to succeed. My pattern was:

Levels 7 down to 1, 7 sets, 30 seconds each level

Then Level 1 for the rest of the duration

My ipad has been having problems for the past year or so (it's very old), so now all I can watch is youtube, but luckily- youtube has a lot to watch! I flipped around today. I watched one that I always find a trip that I can't link to because I don't know how but if you go to youtube and put in "crazy customer subway" it comes right up.

Hope everyone's doing well in the heat!

Today I did 40 minutes on the stairmaster. My pattern was:

Levels 7 down to 1, 7 sets, 30 seconds each level except for level 1 which was always for 1 minute, then level 1s after I finished my 7 sets. It was glorious.

I talked to Taylor in the locker room but she was running to a hot yoga class so it was a pretty quick convo. She got fully naked while speaking to me in a way that I saw her whole body right in front of me. It's interesting, as she definitely used to hide her body from me. Maybe it means were closer friends now but I don't know. She looks very young naked because of how tiny she is. I would say that La la's body naked is more shocking in regard to the anorexic factor, not necessarily because La La is smaller, but because La La looks older.

Taylor told me that there was a guy named Brandon who wanted to hook up with her and and she texted that she didn't want to, and he texted back, "Fuck you" and then "I'll teach you a lesson." That was alarming. She wisely did not respond. She said that Brandon's brother is in prison for murder. Wonderful. The boys must have come from a very loving family... When I expressed alarm she said, "Well, he's an alcoholic and was probably just drunk." Then she did her classic Taylor half smile. And off she went to hot yoga, which she does once a week. I was left to think: Where did this Brandon even come from

Built an extension cord holder. It is a 100 ft outdoor 12 gauge heavy duty cord, very heavy and wears me out to roll it up with my arms and shoulders. Now it is a great deal more manageable. Mowed lawns the rest of the day and actually got every bit of that accomplished ... this is a first in a very long time ... had to hop along the last couple of hours but it is done!!! Makes me so happy!!!!! Snakes do not like short lawns. I dropped the blade on the mower as low as it will go ... it is truly a "bald-headed" yard right now. LOL!! ;)

Exercise: 1 hour and 25 minute walk

Today was really nice weather, cooler than usual in NYC. I was to meet my friend at a tea house but asked if we could switch to a walk given the weather. He told me he was looking forward to the tea house but that we could walk after. I said "perfect!" but really just so I didn't come off as a bossy bitch. I guess it was perfect that we compromised, but drinking tea before walking has it's problems :koolaid:.

We walked from 3:30 to 5:30, but there was some stopping. He asked if we could stop in a sex store so that he could look for a gift for his girlfriend. Yeah, just what I had in mind . He ended up getting her an expensive device that is supposed to simulate going down on her because he doesn't like to do that. I could be wrong because I didn't want to stand with him during the selection process but I believe it cost 200 dollars. Oh, straight cis rich white men, is there no end to your antics! Actually we've been close friends for many, many years so, yes, you be you!

He wanted to walk the Queensborough Bridge but it had already been 2 hours, and he's tall, so he walks REALLY fast, so I was like, maybe let's not today. When we parted ways I walked around a street fair a bit. I love to get the grilled corn on the cob but they had already closed. Why did we have to go to the sex shop :readfineprint:.

I ended up with 12K steps on my iphone but stupidly (or not) I had him carry all my stuff, including my iphone (he's nice that way), so my short legs would have gotten tons more steps registered than his long ones- darn it!

Happy exercising, friends!

40 miles on the bike this morning. I wasn't sure how it was going to go because I woke up with a muscle in my left side all in knots and painful. I figured riding would either make it worse or help it relax. It helped it relax a bit. Still sore but I will live.

I stopped once at about 25 miles to take pictures of an old VW bus that had been turned into a massive planter, including a roof rack full of tomato plants. Then I stopped at 30 miles to rest a few- probably a 5 minute rest.

I'd say today was a successful training ride. It's beautiful out today so the path I was on was pretty busy with bikers and joggers and walkers. There was a low level of the people who annoy me most by walking in the middle of the path with headphones on so they can't hear anyone coming who is trying to alert them that they are going to be passing on their left. Bonus points when they also have a dog running around....

Yesterday I walked during lunch time and after work.

I also stopped at the gym on my walk to pick up my ipad so that I can recharge it at home.

Today: 45 miles on the bike. I'm trying to be better about taking breaks. I read through the cue sheets for my upcoming ride and tried to mirror today's ride after their ride/rest schedule. So I stopped at 12 miles, 22 miles and 35 miles. The first two stops were quick hydrate/bathroom. Third I stopped and ate some almonds and a banana and drank more water. It was a success.

There was a big group of people doing a ride together and they were all on recumbent bikes. They were really fun. We saw each other off and on throughout the day.

Today, after walking around the grocery store, grocery shopping, the cashier told me about a self-service car wash close by. So instead of taking my car through a drive-thru car wash, I went to the self service car wash. Omg, every muscle in my body is seemingly on 'fire'. As anyone might know, self serve car wash places might seem less expensive, because I thought it would be. LOL, it's not. It takes me time to maneuver my own body with my walking aide, so several sets of $2.50 (three times) later, I finally got my own car washed. But ,,, lol, a guy vacuuming his big truck out saw me struggling to rinse the soapy lather off my car, so he came over to help me. Even funnier, was that I didn't realize that I had to dislodge the tubing attached to the hose, so I could walk the spray nozzle gizmo around my car. We both had a good laugh over my car wash stupidity, which after laughing pretty hard, I felt smarter. LMAO, well kind of. ;)

45 minute self serve car wash exercise activity.
45 minute grocery store shopping / walking adventure.

Equals: lots of laughter and not so happy body muscles. I'll Live another day for doing it, though. :blueheels:

Today was a perfect day weather-wise, like... perfect, so everyone was outside which for me means a nice, empty gym! I walked 10K steps outside (estimate: 1 hr of walking) and did the stairmaster for 30 minutes in the gym (levels, between 7 and 1). I ran into no one I knew at the gym because they were all frolicking outside!

Weather matters!

I know I haven’t been in here forever, but I have a whole new appreciation for how weather affects exercise. I was sympathetic before, but now that I lived in a place with four seasons for a few years, I’m totally empathetic. When it’s either 0° or 100° it just doesn’t happen for me, I totally wussed out and had to work out indoors which means pretty much not at all. Big props to all you folks who manage to do it.

I moved back to the coast three months ago and I’m now very happy in a Mediterranean climate. These days my exercise consists of daily outdoor walks that bring my step count to between 15,000 and 20,000 per day. 15,000 on days where I hike nearby lagoon trails, 3-4 miles, 20,000 on days where the tides cooperate and I’m out on the beach 5-7 miles. The balance is made up puttering around in my yard.

I can’t even describe how much better I feel, exercise is high on the list.

Today I counted as 2 hrs 20 min of walking. I just guesstimated. I walked 18.5K steps, according to my iphone. I'm 5'2.5" so I think 5000 steps would be about 40 minutes. Does 40 minutes for 5000 steps sound right, if walking at a slow pace (the type of pace where I am literally reading stuff on my iphone as I walk)?

I walked to the gym, then walked in the gym (some stair climbing of the actual stairs, some track walking), and then walked back home. I explored some nooks of the gym I hadn't before. It's six flights and was bought and changed a bit by new people about a year ago, so I got to see things I had not noticed before. That was cool.

Sounds reasonable. My current exercise plan is “you get there when you get there“. When I am doing my walks my watch tells me I’m turning in 25 minute miles, I’m a couple of inches taller than you. I’ve heard that an average/brisk walk is 15 minutes per mile, LOL. I am a consummate stroller and frequently slow or stop to watch shorebirds, surfers, kids building sandcastles and every other excuse to just enjoy the day.

One day last week the workout program on my watch actually tapped me on the wrist to say “Are you done? Should I close the program?“ :|.

That six flights should count as a workout of it’s own, it’s cool that you are finding new spaces in the building, maybe the new people will add new toys.

I've been a ghost in the gym for a long time now but I do regularly get exercise at work. It's not the same as dedicated workout time and effort, though. Today was a home organization day and I spent a lot of time lifting and bending and sorting and going through clothes so there's the triple benefit of movement with intention, a more fresh and clean environment and I get to donate some stuff too.

Having had the shock at the weekend of discovering just how quickly I can lose what fitness I have if I don;t exercise for a few days, I have completed my first day getting back into the swing of things with my exercise. Which I now know, the hard way, I MUST keep doing or suffer teh consequences.

!,000 steps on the stepper achieved, plus a little light, and slow, lifting of hand dumbells.
Tomorrow's target - 1,100 plus some Tai Chi. I'm going to increase things slowly till a walk to the local shops or a day out with my friend doesn't feel exhausting again!

I walked 13,500 steps which I counted as 1 hr 40 minutes of walking. I have a little chart where I write down how long I exercised each day. I've kept if for years. It helps me literally see the big picture.

I walked half an hour at lunch. I don't work in a lovely neighborhood but whatever, it's still nice to get outside. And it is also interesting to explore.

After work I walked home, from the East side of NYC to the West Side. I cross through Central Park but so far I've been crossing on the sidewalk next to the cars, and that's really been an icky walk. I'm going to have to look at a map and figure out how to walk through the actual park, which will be lovely, as long as I don't get lost. It is nice to walk home. I love a functional walk and a destination walk.

As we enter the fall season, walking is at its finest.

Walked to the shops to pick up a parcel and get some milk and bread. Google maps tells me that that's 800m walk there and 800m back so 1.6m or almost exactly a mile, walking, carrying about 2kg on the way back. Also did 200 steps on the stepper before I had an anxiety attack from dealing with student finance stuff which wiped me out for the rest of the day (am better now though, and at least thats done. Should be all set for my final year now!)).

I think cutting through Central Park as part of your regular commute home sounds fantastic. As long as the weather holds up I think you should go for it.

My tracking device says that yesterday was 18,500 steps for 7.3 miles, of course my walking heart rate average was only 100. :giggle:

Looks like today was pretty much identical which makes sense since the tide height was the same. No place further to go.

It added up to 10K (if the iphone is correct) which I counted as 1 hour and 20 minutes of walking. I work in a poor neighborhood, and I took pictures along my walk of a tree that was decorated with colored string with colored seashells hanging from it. It was cool. I love to stop and take photos of whatever catches my eye on a walk. Walks allow for peaceful observation of small details.

That's pretty nice, to find a tree decorated with colored string with seashells hanging from it. I have been going for walks during my lunch hour and there's a little neighborhood restaurant, which is open only a few hours each evening during the week. They have some very pretty plants, which bloom late in the summer, early fall. I have no idea what the one blooming plant is called, but it's like a daisy (of sorts), yet when the petals fall, all that is left is what looks like a teasel. I want to find out if they mind if I cut or trim a few off, to bring home with me. Noticing one's environment in natural settings sure can make one feel better. Especially if it is something that is unexpectedly beautiful... like that tree on your walk.

Maple and Oak trees are already changing with the season... the leaves that fall to the ground are so incredibly beautiful, right now.

I even noticed a nearly full moon tonight, on my evening walk. So very beautiful, how it lofts up high in the evening sky.

I walked 9K steps today, which included a 30 minute walk for my lunch time at work. I counted the total as 70 minutes of walking.

Today's walk included maybe like five boys stealing some pizzas. It was like neighborhood drama. As I walked, first I watched the incident and then I listened to people talk about it. Since I work in impoverished neighborhoods there will always be stealing. I observed mixed emotions from people- very upset, a bit of excitement- It occurred in the most happening area of the neighborhood, so it generated some energy somehow.

Once I saw a man in another impoverished neighborhood leave a drug store and start getting chased. He tore off his shirt which contained many, many products from the drug store and ran. The desperation of poverty is primal.

Yesterday I walked 8K steps which I counted as one hour, and I also did 15 minutes on the stairmaster.

Yesterday it was parent teacher night for my school so I had a significant break in between the end of the school day and the evening meetings. Thus I walked to a different branch of my gym. The walk was pretty unpleasant weather-wise. It was humid and raining, but not raining hard, more like needles that make you squint. It was exciting to go to a branch of my gym I'd never been to before. All I had time for was 15 minutes, and it was a good workout. I felt like Superman. It was exciting to use that time for a new gym adventure. Why did I feel like Superman? Because of the aspect of changing clothes and putting on a different identity to do something special to me.

My walking today was 14,500K steps which I counted as 1 hr and 50 min. Today for the first time I walked home through Central Park from work instead of walking through where the cars go. Oh my goodness, it was amazing. I walked right at the perimeter of the park and did not get lost. Not only that, I found a very straightforward beautiful trail that included ducks, geese, lake, rocks, and even a waterfall. It was just a gorgeous and peaceful walk, and the weather was perfect fall-like weather. I did not even know this part of Central Park existed. I also had a red, white, and blue popsicle during the walk that I bought at one of the stands. It was a magnificent afternoon. And now I can always walk that trail home when time and weather permit. A world opened up for me!

Trying new things to upend old routines can go either way but it sounds like you scored a double positive. I think your new route for walking through the park and being in a more natural environment sounds fantastic. Kudos to you for experimenting, I hope you continue that path and maybe even find some others to add to your repertoire. :cheesy:

So, for the last three days since my last check in I show Wednesday at 21,190 steps, Thursday at 9781, and today at 19,684. Wednesday and today were out at the beach and Thursday I had an appointment and errands so that was just walk around time.

One thing I should note is that those step counts are for the whole day not just my outdoor walk and do not include the end of the day after I post although granted I’m usually just sitting around reading or watching something. So 5k-ish for just puttering around the house.

I was asked if I could speed up my outdoor walk time to go faster than 25 minute miles. Of course! I could lengthen my stride, put a little more pep in my step, or just quit dawdling over every little shiny thing. I know I’m posting in the exercise thread but for right now my focus is actually on mental health and well-being over physical accomplishment. The most recent last few years have been pretty bumpy for me psychologically and I am working on putting myself back together. Right now my goal is 2 to 4 hours per day outdoors in a natural environment preferably while moving my body around.

I think I would like to up my game in the not too distant future towards more physically challenging activities. Sort of thinking about this winter and trying a little running on the beach. We’ll see, I’m taking it easy for the moment.

Since returning from the South I've missed the humidity...but will I give up the high desert plateau altitude? I think not. I love running under this big sky.

Anyway tomorrow no long run, want to paint all day without interruption.

But, Monday begins 40 reps with my weight training, always fun, bike 1.5 hrs and my 3mi.

By the way, consider yourself repped as when I attempt it on the phone it simply does not show up.

So, I want to share this here, in this thread where we know the value of movement. I am presently 67 years old. Why is that important to say? Because I come from a generation that didn't think we'd make it past 30.

My generation saw the advent of GRIDS...which was changed to AIDS...most of our friends died. We, I also lived and survived Stonewall..lots to say about that but it's for another thread.

I lost my Beloved of twenty years some years back and I was left with a decision.
Continue to engage in what we loved, or just give up, give up all the beauty of our life together...no fu*king way!!!

She loved children, we loved children. One way to keep her legacy of love alive is for me to run for tfk, team for kids which gives kids in NYC a chance to run and have fun.

I am running the NYC Marathon this year and every year that G_d grants me life to pass on my Beloved's legacy and my own as well.

I love to run, my Beloved and I ran in many beautiful places together...and I continue to do so. I judge no one, people can move or not it is up to each of us alone to decide. But, I must tell you that my being a butch at 67 feels damn good...and I'll continue to run, bike, swim, walk and of course dance because it brings me joy, and because my Beloved wants me to be the best I can be, and I enjoy running for me period.

So, I may soon not be able to post any more, I am old school and do not use credit cards for the membership to this site, so I wanted to share these thoughts with you all.

I have visited this site since 2010...many years...it helped me deal with my deep grief and I have met lovely femmes and butches here, if only through posts and/or via phone. You have all supported me through a tough time in my life and I thank you all for all the words and sharings.

Wow, well done, dear!

I've managed to do a small amount of exercise - not enough, but some ever day for several days now, and I've been heartened by this SciShow video that explains that it's easier to regain fitness if you;ve been fit before, and why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ243W2gFNs

So from now on, I'm telling myself that this isn't going to be such a struggle as I fear, having been reasonably fit a couple of years ago, I CAN do it again, and more easily if I persist! I've tended to find the psychological side more of a problem than the physical side. So I'm aiming to get those endorphins going, the lift from those should get me the rest of the way.

Well, I did it! I got up before the sun and made my way to the gym. I even remembered to get my clothes together the night before but forgot to check for bananas. I typically eat one right before I leave. No bananas!!! Well, damn. The next best thing was an apple and I had those. Loki followed me around as I ate it, talking to me because he didn't understand why I was up and why I wasn't feeding him. I explained to him that he would eat at the normal time when I got back but he didn't seem to get it. Eventually, he left me alone and wandered over to mess with Gracie.

So, I got going and got settled in at the gym then I pushed the wrong button! The end workout button is right below the TV channel button. Darnitall. Luckily, I was still very early into the workout. I got back into it and set up another program. This time, I opted for one of the recorded trail workouts so I could see pretty parks and hills while I sashayed on the elliptical. It wound up being really nice except for the poor birdie that flew into the glass towards the end of my workout.

Good news, the poor baby was really stunned but standing up and looking around when I left. I snapped a pic of him. He's so tiny and cute with a bright yellow breast.

Workout: 293 cal, 2.05 mi, 37 min

I feel less stiff now, even though I spent most of the morning cleaning house, so I'm happy about making myself do it. Even though I cut my sleep short in order to get in early, I feel good.

Today I walked 11K which I counted as 1 hr and 20 minutes of walking. I'm still going by the theory that 5K steps is about 40 minutes of walking. I hope that's right.

I walked at the gym. I did a pattern of walking up a flight (six flights of stairs in the gym), then walking in the gym floor at the level, then walking up another flight and doing the same thing (etc. etc.) for all six flights. Then I'd walk down all six flights (without stopping to roam the gym floors), and then I'd do it all over again (the same pattern). It was too hot outside, so I found the cool environment of the gym a nice place to walk.

I ordered a fitbit inspire HR, as recommended to me by a colleague, so I'll see how I like that. It's always hard for me to get used to new things.

Both today and yesterday ended up just a few steps from each other at 19,800, 7.7 mi total until 7pm when my battery dies. It seems using a couple extra apps for a few hours drains it fairly quickly.

Turning in my 25 min miles it just dawned on me another thing that has a slowing effect is the fact that I’m barefoot for this. The surface changes quite a bit week to week. This week features about three miles of my walk has a wide band covered in baby muscle/snail-ish by the kagillion, it’s carpeted with them. I choose to think of it as a great foot massage rather than “death of a thousand tiny cuts”. There is also stretch of kelp bed that washed up a couple few days ago, should be gone soon though, it’s moving around every couple of tides. That said there are a few hardy souls running barefoot on the shells.

There was a family setting up a Christmas’s tree with all the trimmings in the sand. :|

I got 10K steps... just from work! I count that as 1 hr and 20 minutes of walking.

Gemme, do you ever consider tracking your steps or you just don't care? I bet you get a lot of steps in on your job.

CCB, it helps motivate me to keep a chart up on my fridge (not related to food!) for my exercise. I put up a calendar page for each month and fill it in with the exercise I do.

Greco, what is your resting heart rate? Mine is maybe 120, though I can't quite recall. When I do the stairmaster it is usually in the 160's, which feels quite intense, though in a good way. The 150's feel somewhere between moderate to intense. And if I hit the 170's I try and scale back. Any thoughts on HR? (Kelt too?) I'm excited to be getting my fitbit inspire HR.

I have thought about it! Through the process of cleaning things out, I found a very old fashioned style pedometer. It looks like a pink thermometer and has a belt clip. I don't know where I picked it up but considering it was only 4 bucks, I can't imagine that it would work correctly. I might pop in a new battery and see what happens for the sake of experimentation.

You're right; on most days I bet I get quite a few steps in. I'd love to get something to monitor not only steps but my calorie expendage.

Hmmm....online dictionary doesn't like that word but it's a movie so it's a real word. Hrmph!

Anywho, I'd love to but anything electronic doesn't work in my office. It's a verified dead zone. Annnnd....I'm a wee bit cheap so between those two reasons, I need to go old school. Maybe I'll get a more reasonably sized pedometer that I can clip to my shoe lace or sock.

I'm debating whether to go to the gym tomorrow morning. My head says NO and to sleep in late but my body filled up fast on dinner and I'm already starting to yawn so I think it's trying to tell me YES. Getting there is half the battle. We'll see if motivation beats out comfort under warm blankets when the sun hasn't even come up to say hello yet.

NYCfem, if your resting HR is 120, go to a hospital!

Jeez, mine is was 61 this morning, 64 now. I think “normal” is somewhere around 50/70.

Will your new Fitbit do elevation so you can see how many flights you do on this new job?

Gemme, the regular pedometers work great, it’s only been recently that I’ve used this other stuff just because I have it. My Grandfather had a mechanical one that clipped onto the arch inside of his shoe and had a lever that had to just barely clear the ground so that stepping down on it would count a step. I used the kind you are talking about and even put my mother on one. No real need for all these other bells and whistles for a data set.

You can walk three strides normally and take the average, do that three times, average again and use your stride length to determine mileage if you’re interested in that.

Your job is a good one for staying in shape, but I know you’ve gotten satisfaction from the gym before. Try a few sessions and see if it sparks back up for you. :heavyweight:

My check in says yesterday for the day was 21918 steps, 8.7mi with the beach portion taking 3hr. Today for the day so far is 18631 steps, 7.3 mi, with the beach at 2h45m. I ran out of day, the sun set!

With all the resting HR talk, I turned to my friend, Google. She says:

The normal resting heart rate for adults over the age of 10 years, including older adults, is between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). Highly trained athletes may have a resting heart rate below 60 bpm, sometimes reaching 40 bpm. The resting heart rate can vary within this normal range.

They suggest to check it after waking while you are still in bed but it's too late for me to do that since I've been up before the sun but I got a count of 77 and that's with me sitting quietly in a chair and being as out of shape as I ever have been. Normally, it's much lower.

Counting strides on my own wouldn't work. I'd lose count and sometimes I have to walk next to very tall and/or long-legged people so 2.5 of my strides is one to theirs and I have to change my gait to keep up with those folks.

I'll see if this ugly pink thing works and, if not, will just go grab something easy from the Mart of Wally.

Well, I went! I hated it for most of the time but I went. I got up about a quarter after 5, said hi to the babies, had a banana (I remembered to buy some yesterday!) and off I went. It was busier than I expected but weekdays usually are.

There are 3 regular ellipticals and that's my jam since it works the whole body and I can really control how much I stress my body. I want to ease back into things. It's been 4-5 MONTHS since I regularly went. These old bones need some loving to get moving!

So, only one was available when I arrived and it was in the middle. Two older gentlemen were on the others. The guy on the right side of me, no problem. The guy on the left, problem. Big problem for me. He was a breather. You know, one of those folks that exhales really forcefully. I hate that sound. It's not Lamaze, buddy, and you're not in labor. Tone it down! He stayed for 2/3 of my workout and half of that time was me staring holes into his reflection in the glass in front of us. He also coughed a lot and basically spewed his saliva and germs all over the piece of equipment. This is why I wipe down the machine BEFORE I get on it as well as when I get off of it. You never know who's been distributing their DNA and germies all over everything.

One thing that helped me not completely lose my mind was that a younger woman came in and took the treadmill catty corner to my left and on the other side of the heavy breather. She appeared fit but when she started running, she stomped on that belt like she was a Clydsedale. I felt better about myself because I do the SAME THING. I am not light-footed by any imagination so it was nice to see/hear someone much smaller and fitter than I sounded the same as me. Win! Also, I noticed a slight unconscious upping of my effort once she started running. I can be competitive in the gym if I'm not careful but I let it go to see where it would take me and, happily, it wasn't too bad. I just found myself moving a little faster and falling in time with her foot strokes, like a bass drum. Win win!

So, obvs I made it to the gym and I was glad...at the end...to have done so but it wasn't easy making it through. The last 10 minutes were the best because I didn't have Igor on my left and by then a handsome fellow had saddled up on my right so there was straight eye candy as well. I'm a sucker for dark hair and light eyes.

I could have been his mother.

So, as we all know, machines are only as good as their last calibration and I think the machine last time was a little loosey goosey with the caloric burn but I felt that I really and truly earned the count on today's elliptical so I'm very happy with the turn of events in the end.

All in all, it said I murdered 275 calories, sashayed my way 1.88 miles through the Yosemite Valley and it only took me 35 minutes to do so.

I'm not really the chart type. But. I am a planner whore and there are all kinds of "habit tracker" stickers for exercise and fitness and a whole sticker pack just for fitness. Maybe I need to get that and start including exercise in my habit trackers. I already track my art and tarot habits and it's very satisfying.

I was back at it this morning. This being up before the sun thing is great but man, it's tiring. I actually had to take a nap yesterday and it didn't even interfere with my sleep. That's incredibly unusual.

Well, there were a lot of people there again, and I got there even earlier than my previous days. I got the left most elliptical (the one the noisy guy breathed all over yesterday) so I wiped it down verrrrry thoroughly. The guy next to me glanced over a few times but I stayed the course and prepped the machine so I won't get any cooties I didn't ask for.

I opted to do the virtual hikes in New Zealand this time and I remembered my headphones so I got to hear all the animal chatter along the way. They also played music that I think was local to the area. I hadn't heard any of the songs. There was one in particular that I liked and part of the chorus went something like, "don't come in my kitchen cuz I'm not making nothing no mo'". It was sassy! The general vibe of the music was low key and relaxed EDM and kind of pop-y and dance-y.

Did y'all know that in NZ, it's not called hiking? It's called tramping and you don't walk on trails, you walk on tracks. Interesting. One of the info blurbs that popped up said one particular area was one of the most dangerous in the area but didn't say why until another blurb popped up several minutes later. Why wait so long? Those Kiwi are a funny lot. They have the cutest birds, though.

I felt good about today's efforts. I got into the course and the course music and it felt like the time went by a little faster than the previous days, which tends to happen when I listen to music as I work out. It was really nice.

The last couple of days the only time the tides cooperated were at right near sunset. Thursday night was a really spectacular sunset so I dawdled around and took some pretty good pictures. Last night it was an ordinary sunset but because it was a Friday night there were a ton of people out there having picnic suppers. Very festive and a fun vibe.

Anyway, I was getting home late so didn’t post, Numbers for the last couple of days:
Thursday 17,266 for 6.7mi
Friday 17,387 for 6.7mi
Those are all day totals

There won’t be any usable beach time during daylight hours today so I will be switching to lagoon trails. That will be a lot shorter because my local lagoon is undergoing an extensive renovation and the trails have spots where they are closed for the work being done. It will be a fun change of pace for a while and a way to mix things up. I will use Gemme‘s New Zealand terminology for that, I will be “tramping“, but on trails. :cheesy:

My start goal this morning was a 50 mile ride.
I changed course at about 15 miles when I remembered there was a road I wanted to take that gives some serious hill training. So I ended up with 35 miles, 16 miles of which were long steep climbs.

I stopped at my halfway point and pulled over to a pathway off of the road. Along came this huge group of volunteers who walk shelter dogs. It was the best. At the front were all of the little dogs, which aren't really my thing, but I gave them pets, of course. And then came the pit bulls. They were staggered to give space between them. I was in heaven. I hugged all of them and some jumped up with me on the bench I was sitting on and they drooled on me and gave kisses while trying to sit on my lap.

Color me happy.

I'm trading my current "Upstairs, Downstairs" work routine for a role I'm going to assume in October … which is primarily lots of "sit down, stand up" comedic-almost, types of exercise, which ends every night with lots of juggling acts, and extended bouts of walking. So I'm looking forward to that change of scenery, come mid-October.

This past week it's been very wet in the Pacific Wonderland, but today holds promise of cotton-candy clouds and tons of sunshine. So I plan to go on a long walk, this afternoon. It's a stretch of about 5 miles... along the river front. I plan to park where my walk ends, but take the train to where my walk begins. Not sure how long it will take me to do it, but I've got a way to pack water and snacks, so I can stay hydrated and not go hungry, should a snack attack interfere with my exercise activity today. I've also got this small compact Coleman chair which is super easy to spring open and sit on, should I need to rest anywhere along the way. Right now, the trees along the river are simply gorgeous, and it's a calming activity to watch boats or watch for birds or watch for any pings upon the water.

The goal of my walking exercise today is to take in all the peace and joy I can absorb and renew my natural settings: To recalibrate my inner peace and joy, while celebrating the whole weekend as Fall Solstice.

Are you enjoying your fitbit yet nycfem?
In answer to your question my resting HR is 51...to calculate resting HR count your pulse (at wrist) for 10 sec then times it by 6, that will equal your resting HR at that time.

Once bpm (beats per minute) raises to 155 I'm in anaerobic territory, so I stay between 135 -145 bpm...remaining here has created my endurance base.
So, fat burning for me was 125- 130 bpm which feels slow, but also ensured non-injuries. Yes, I had to learn that faster is not better, least not for long distance running.

What is normal HR? I trust my body, how it feels, my breathing, and yes my own HR, period. What I've learned is that my weight, past fitness, and current weight and fitness level is what is important.

So, beginning with my HR and keeping tabs on bpm has been most important...as well as listening to my body before, during, and after any movements I've engaged in...ie., running, biking, walking, rowing, swimming.

Listening also to how my body responds in exercise to the different foods I eat. For example, if I eat rice, more than 1.5 cups than I find my running and movement is more difficult...well, but yes I eat rice and stay at 1 cup most days.

Here's a way to figure out the HR for your age, my data:
start with 220 and subtract your age...
220
-67=
153 Max HR

75% training zone (aerobic zone)

153
x 75%
= 114.75

As you can see from these numbers by my age, I train at higher rate. Why?
I know that my previous fitness levels, my diet, and my reduction of high levels of stress through breath work, yoga (stretching) has supported my
body's ability to perform at my present level.

I share this to encourage others to not look at age as a negative factor in fitness. It has taken patience on my part to begin from where I was a morbidly obese butch of 238lbs to begin to walk slowly at first then to incorporate jogging into those walks.

What helped was remembering how my body felt when at its fittest when in the military, basic training, scaling that 7 foot wall, I remember it as my biggest challenge at the time...my body remembered too. My vegan journey began and that was hugely positive in propelling my body to move easier, and breathing became a joy. So, it's been many years since then...slowly I've been my own experiment...experiment of one...and this experiment continues...with gratitude. I want to share that its never too late...never.

Able to get to internet 1x per week only now...

This morning's cooler run 8mi...slow and easy...smiling

Have a great Sunday exercisers, Greco

Th. 9/19, 40 min. walking, 5,150 steps

Fri. 9/20, 40 min. walking, 4,749 steps

Sunday, aka today, 10K steps, which I will call 1 hr and 20 min walking. I used my Fitbit HR Inspire today. It says that my resting heart rate is 80 bpm. It says that I walked 4.4 miles. As I walked, I think my HR was in the low 130's. My walk consisted of a street fair and then walking up and down flights of stairs in the gym combined with walking the gym floors in between flights.

I had made plans to walk with my brother but he had told me to meet him at his gym which was annoying and also it was hot out, so I cancelled. It was nice being in the air-conditioned gym, and I also enjoy doing the stairs there.

Today was my first day using my Fitbit. I'm excited at the idea of having my "puttering around the home" steps counted. #nerd

Unfortunately, the training zone number really doesn't work for me. My heart rate has always skyrocketed the second I start breathing hard so for me to stay in the zone around 131, I can't really be doing more than walking somewhere between a meander and a clip. Brisk is not allowed. Forget jogging or running.

I'm good with the max rate, though. Having experienced extremely high HR, I'm happy to stay under that.

I've been remiss about checking in!

The trail tramping a couple of days ago didn't happen due to phone calls turning into hours of paperwork etc..excuses, bah. At least I did most of my work outside on the patio, gotta love an iPad! That day of pure laziness only netted me 3852 steps for a whopping 1.5mi. Not bad considering how small my house is, must have been pacing..

The next two had slightly better tides earlier in the day. I love mornings because that when the birds are more active. The new arrivals for the start of winter migration are starting to trickle in with the Long Billed Curlews and small batches of Sandpipers which will turn into big clouds of them when we get into winter. There must have been good fishing along one stretch where it was fun to watch the Ospreys diving and even a few Dolphins out for the hunt. :cheesy:

Sunday came in at 20,506 steps for 7.9mi
Monday was nearly the same with 19,071 steps for 7.4mi
Today is pretty much a bust as I am stuck at home with vendors

I agree about how total steps kind of feels like cheating. That’s why sometimes I use the separate workout app to see how I’m doing with pace and the duration of just my intentional exercise. I don’t do it all the time, because much of what I do is just the same route. I know that my beach walk is between 6 and 7 miles depending on the tides, and my lagoon trails are 2 to 3 miles depending on which sections I’m using.

So yesterday near the end of my beach walk I managed to jam a toe pretty hard. I finished the walk and got home thinking it was just a bit sore but after sitting for a while and then trying to walk on it again, I discovered it is none too happy with me. I may well be sidelined for a couple of days.

The weather gods are telling me that it’s OK to take a day off. I seem to be having my first cloudy and actually slightly rainy day since I arrived in May.

Wednesday had 18,795 steps for 7.4 miles
Thursday had 23,288 steps for 9.3 miles

I had a rather epic ride on Thursday this week.

I got about 15 miles out, when, after doing my super hilly stretch that goes by several gravel pits, I found that I had a flat. I pulled over to the bike path that runs alongside to fix it and found that I'd forgotten my bag that has my tire pry. I was calling a friend who lives near where I was riding when a man came by who stopped and he had a tire pry. He loaned me his tools and thankfully I had a spare tube and pump and he was good about not stepping in. Often men try to take over when I'm fixing a flat. In the end we worked together a bit because it's a new tire and it was really hard to get it all back on the rim when all was said and done so we needed four hands. But he stepped back after that while I re-mounted it and got the chain connected and made sure everything was okay.

Then the storm started coming in. It was obviously worse in the direction I had intended to head to so I turned around to go to where I could see more clear sky. But still it was a good two hours of riding in pouring rain.

There's an old set of railroad tracks on part of this path. I hate them. They are very wide set and worn out so the pavement along the rails is all worn out and there are huge gaps. I've crossed the tracks on my bike hundreds of time and it's always scary. This time, a combination of a car racing up behind me preventing me from taking the angle I need to take to hit the tracks right, and everything being slippery wet from rain, my front tire went into one of the pits next to the rails and my bike flipped. Banged up my right side pretty good.

I got up and rode the 15 miles back to home but stopped short because I didn't want the ride to get the better of me so I took another 5 miles. I had planned another 10 miles but another storm started and I was soaked and cold and exhausted and sore from the fall. But I did it.

I have some very colorful bruising and road rash now... Yay.

Gemme! Oh no. That does not sound good. I hope you are better very soon. Just pace yourself.

Today was a 60 mile bike ride. I had it planned out last night and I even dreamed about it last night that it went really well and it did. It rained for the last 15 miles but that's okay. I studied the tracks that flipped my bike last week and decided they are in horrible condition. I took pictures of the ruts and the rails literally rippling and split at parts. I'm not going to ride across them anymore. It's a miracle that's the only time I flipped after years of riding across them.

On Thursday I drive out to the start line for Tour de Pink (Fundraiser bike ride for the young breast cancer survivor coalition) and will ride that Friday through Sunday this weekend. 200 miles. After today's ride I'm feeling better prepared.

Thinkin’ easygoingfemme is kicking azz and taking names. :cheesy: Definitely worth walking across those tracks. If it is part of a designated bike route you might send your pics to whoever runs the fixing calendar.

Gemme, I hope you’re back up to speed soon, I enjoy hearing about the trail programs you’re using.

nycfem, when I have a big total like that it’s because it’s the whole day including whatever I did intentional or not. Last night I walked the length of my home beach and back without stopping and it took 2:45. At 25 min/mi pace that would be 6.6mi which is about right.

I’m trying not to go so far down the detail road as I have in the past and focus on trends over time that affect whole health. So, weekly, monthly, and annual numbers are playing a bigger role for me over my one off numbers. I’m sure that will morph over time as I go in and out through cycles.

I am looking at things like consistency in weight, resting heart rate, average steps/miles over time, sleep trends and right now more subjective mental health milestones.

That said, after a day off walking my day totals for Sunday and Monday were 21,231steps 8.5mi and 18,060 steps 7.1mi

For the month of Sept I averaged 15,975 steps per day over 30 days, slept (actually asleep) 6hr20min per night, and had a resting heart rate variance from 58-73, again over 30 days.

This is all passive tracking via my watch, it just tallies up over time. I went very far down the obsessive tracking rabbit hole a few years ago and stayed there for years. Think reams of spreadsheets. I’m trying to use this more passive/trend approach as a way to get the benefits without being such a nut job. :jester:

It was a day off work for the Jewish holiday, and I was going to be tending to one of my cat's ailments. Without the fitbit I would have assumed that I barely walked at all- but I did, Blanche, I did!

Thank you, body, for the 4000 steps :praying:

Thank you! Me too! You are right; not good. I think I'm over the worst of it but am still really struggling with the coughing. I had a bad cold last year about this time too but wound up with zero sickness during the winter so if this is the trade off, I'm okay with that. One cold a year seems reasonable considering I work with the public.

Gemme, I hope you’re back up to speed soon, I enjoy hearing about the trail programs you’re using.

Thank you! Again, me too. I was enjoying them myself as it's a bit distracting from the goings on of the gym that I don't care for (grunting, hacking and general unpleasant noises).

I ordered a decent pedometer that I can attach to my shoe laces. I've always been a bit curious to see how much I walk at work (but not enough to do anything about it) but I am going to a huge art festival next week so I wanted to figure out how it works before then because I know it'll be a big numbers day for steps. I prefer low tech because high tech requires a connection to an app and my apartment and office have horrible reception so it wouldn't record properly anyway. Why pay extra for all the bells and whistles when a kazoo works just fine?

All of you that walk long distances impress me. It's the easiest way to get movement in but I can't do that without my back screaming at me. Between the extra weight I've accrued over the years, having a deep seated spine and being a bit of a swayback, walking long distances is very uncomfortable to me. That's why the elliptical is so great. The forward and circular motion keeps everything moving but with far less impact and my back feels good and loose after a workout instead of like my vertebrae are all compacted together into a knot, like it does with walking or running.

I'm still getting in plenty of coughing crunches for my ab work but am feeling a bit drier in the schnoz, thank goodness. I think that's the worst part of a cold for me; the constant drip drip drip. I'm hoping to be able to get back into the gym on Friday again. Wish me luck!

Hey Wrangler, good to see you sticking it out even in the heat. You have my sympathies, it seems to make it all uphill both ways..

nycfem, curious about you having been anti-fit bit; why against it instead of just a non-user?

Gemme, I think a kazoo is just right and a lot of the rest of it is window dressing and fad. I use an iwatch for my step tracking, but that’s not what I bought it for, it’s a side effect I’m having fun with. The reason that I got it was that I am on call 24/7 and was just tired of having to have my phone with me at all times. When the iwatch4 came out with phone and text capabilities, it was tempting but some of the other things actually made it worth it for me. My father got afib when he was 52, I am now 58. Thinking of having it spot something like that on me does not replace a doctor but it does replace what I’m doing currently for that which is nothing. This also has fall detection in it, which I know works from the two times I’ve set it off by banging my wrist hard against something. Over the last four years my mother has had three serious falls and two years ago I had a pretty bad one myself. (Yes, I tripped over a garden hose in my own stupid driveway at night and landed on my head; saw stars for 3 days) I realize this is a pretty serious problem for people that don’t have anyone around to find them.

I didn’t start using the health tracking features until four months ago when I moved to my new location. Now I’m having some fun with it as a toy and posting my stats in here helps with accountability. With that in mind, here are my numbers for yesterday and today:

Wednesday I had 20,537 steps for 8.2 miles This included almost the full length of my Beachwalk.
Today I had 6602 steps for 1245 miles. I may have had some help on that mileage with the three airports that I passed through today.

I won’t be getting much of any activity for the next four days as I will be spending time with my mother who turns 88 tomorrow morning. We will go walk her parks and other haunts but she tires easily, is quite frail, and has a stride of I think about 6 inches. She is sweet and game to go for it though…

I am using the Pacer app. I checked and it has my stride at 25 inches. I highly doubt that 25 inches is correct so I will have to figure that out. Have a great day all. How does it seem too long? Three miles per hour is a steady pace so if you did 4.09 miles in an hour and a half, you are walking faster than that. How long does a four mile walk normally take you?

Well, I didn't walk 4 miles or anything near it so you are doing better than me. Going at your own pace, especially in the beginning, is really important. Don't let yourself get down about something someone once said. Workouts should be specifically geared towards you and your experience. I've been struggling to get a consistent amount of exercise done each day, but nevertheless there do seem to be some signs that my rather poor fitness levels might be starting to improve a bit.

Knowing that walking is supposed to be one of the best and easiest forms of exercise for all-round health, I've been trying to do a certain amount of exercise on my stepper machine each day, as well as a little Tai Chi and some very light use of dumbbells. Due to the weakness of things around my ankles, though, I find using the stepper tougher than actual walking and was interested to see this latest video from SciShow about the "how many steps a day" thing and exercise:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyrCPi3cTjw

I found this heartening because it means I've been doing somewhat better than I'd thought, but also means I can shift focus away from the stepping and more onto other low/no impact exercsie that will get my heart rate up.

I finally got my pedometer up and running last night in preparation for today, which was my first outing to the Scituate Art Festival. It's sooo much walking even though I got a sweet parking spot in the midst of it all. I didn't put on the pedometer until I got there and took a picture of the steps when I left so I'd know exactly how much walking I did there alone. I walked 8674 steps from 10am-2pm. That's pretty decent, I think, considering it was almost exclusively casual meandering on my part and I'm not good with walking long distances. I also went to Wally World and Michael's and JoAnn's afterwards and let the pedometer keep ticking. I'm close to 14500 steps now and will cross at least 15000 steps before I call it a night.

Kelt, you can KEEP these high step days! For those of you who don't know me, I have a very short stride so I get 2-3 steps for every one of you long-legged people. I feel like I'm a 7000-7500 step a day person so today hurt. My tootsies are in the bubble bath as I type. I also have a blister, dammit. That started around the 3000 step mark but I persevered.

I’ve been delinquent about reporting in.

I just reviewed my last week and things have been varied. I had a couple of days buried in paperwork where I was only getting maybe 4000 steps a day and then the tides were pretty lousy so I would only get about half of the beach done but then I would add a little time on lagoon trails, so I had a few 15,000 step days in there.

Yesterday and today I’ve had good midday tides so I’m back at 20,000+ per day. It feels good to get back into my routine. Lots of changes on the beach, it seems like every three or four days a new type of bird comes into town or something else is washed up onshore for a bit.

I had a couple of evenings where the tide was so late that I just stayed through sunset. As it turns out right at sunset is high season for photographers around here, lots of family and individual portraits being taken and I have to say I’ve seen some pretty amazing work being done.

Who knew? I thought in the era of selfies that portraiture had died off. Alive and well here..

I'm not getting in as many steps as most of you here are logging, but my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law's husband? He helped me out by taking his table saw and cutting off a portion of a beach-wood walking stick, and found a rubber tip, like you'd see on a table chair leg (of sorts) and made a nice cane for me to use, while walking.

It's safer than the walking poles my physical therapy team gave to me last August (2018), and I am finding that walking with my new cane is easier than what I have been using for the past year.

I'm getting better, slowly, but slow wins the proverbial race in my world. *lol*

It was three years ago that I rode 21 miles per day, and rode longer on the weekends, just for sheer joy. I feel a spark in my soul when I read about easygoingfemme riding her bike or rowing or how Kelt walks the beach or how nycfem and Gemme get in all those steps.

I guess how I make up for not being able to walk like others, is I go to the pool and do the leg exercises and such, like I did in swim therapy with my PT team. So that's how I am able to improve the muscles in my legs (from my hips down).

Water-based exercise therapy is helping me so much. I only go on the weekends, but I do get in a small amount of walking each day at work and when I'm at home. I have the stairs too; one long set of stairs to get to my floor level, and sometimes it is tough to go up or down them and not lose my balance.

Happy Exercising to all the exercisers here.

And wellness wishes to nycfem and Gemme and anyone else who isn't feeling well. Speedy recovery to all of you! :bunchflowers:

I walked three miles yesterday.

I joined Planet Fitness on January 31st but never visited. I finally changed that. I went and got my card and scheduled an appointment with a trainer to set up a routine. I need something besides walking.

I have lost 21.2 pounds since September 16th. This is the lowest I've weighed in 20+ years. I am pretty excited about it. With each little accomplishment I feel like I gain the motivation to keep going forward.

I have also been trying to eat better. I have cut out pop and decreased carbs. Baby steps!

Nov. 5th I was sick but I did go to work (new job and all) so I got 4000 steps.

On Nov. 6th I felt all better (Hallelujah!) and got 8K.

Today I got 7.6K.

I can't find my fitbit at the moment, so I'm using my phone, and I don't get as many steps with my phone because I don't always have it on me.

I will need to track down my fitbit...

Yup, mittens and a scarf will help with the cold, and what about the sounds of footsteps behind you from a creature like this to help pick up the steps?

Well, I do like my drill a whole lot. I can do without the grinder but the drill....so versatile! And far less dangerous. We shredded a brand new blade in the grinder in less than 5 minutes. Boo.

If you like power tools, you'll dig this. I'm going to pick up an orbital sander and sand the Hell out of a cabinet and some drawers. Friday's going to be 50 degrees! So, I'll pick the sander up tomorrow, read some directions to make sure I won't kill myself using it and then sand the cabinet so I can finish cleaning it up and get it in the apartment. Until it's inside, I can't put my car in the garage and we've already had snow showers. Last year, we got dumped on bad November 15th. I don't like this whole 'snow in November' thing. I much prefer the one dump for the end of the year and then kicking it into gear again in January.

So, we did break a record. Two, actually. One for the low temp for last night. We beat the record by one degree and we beat the record for the high today. We beat it by 5 degrees and it's literally the lowest temperature for this day in history here. That's kind of cool.....freezing, actually....but I digress....

I've gotten 7200 steps in so far today and 222,031 steps for the last month as of this very moment. That would be more impressive if I weren't stuffing my face with Holiday Mix Skittles.

Nope. That's all yours. I was in a car accident many, many years ago so the overhead reach is not what it used to be.

How are you at putting down luxury vinyl flooring? lol I spend a good portion of each week drooling over flooring options and want to change out this disgusting carpet but am hesitant about taking on that type of a home improvement project myself. I think I could do the middle and most of the floor if I do the click installation but I have a lot of doorways and there's a section that will bump up against tile that's higher than the carpet and I doubt my ability to adequately navigate those challenges. If I do glue down installation, which I would prefer given the ease of replacing a damaged plank once it's all down versus the click installation product, then I'd be nervous the whole way 'round because of the adhesive and leveling of the flooring. Any time you find yourself heading up to RI, let me know and I'll find projects for you. We could always rent the big tools from Home Depot.

:cheesy:

So, I managed to tweak the left muscle underneath my rib cage in the back. Not sure how, but I remember it being towards the end of my work day yesterday. Last night was solidly uncomfortable in every way. Today's a little bit better but I truly cannot wait until it's relaxed and is fine again. It makes pulling my seat belt forward to secure very, very challenging.

I just got up, so not a lot of steps on the pedometer yet. I've logged a hair under 700 so far and there's going to be a lot more today. I have a ton of errands, which will help me get the steps in, but I am dreading the whole seat belt drama thing. Ugh.

Well, things are bit crazy on my end. Lots of big tools and projects, but I am taking the roll of project manager and letting others have the tool fun. I have been being pretty good about scheduling around my walk times instead of the other way 'round although a few days get lost.

The tides have been good right at the end of the day and I find that when I get home well after dark I'm kind of done for the day and am remiss about posting.

For averages it looks like on contractor days where I'm not on the beach it runs around 7K-10K steps, 20k-ish for beach days and in the last week I've had 3 days over 25K!

My week average Nov 6-12 was 22k and my month average Oct 14-Nov 13 has been 14.9k.

I think I like this way of looking at as a person who easily gets kind of obsessive about tracking things it's good to step back and look at the bigger picture. Overall I'm pretty happy with my current levels.

Funny story: we finally found the two sanders that they still had in stock so I told her I was going to keep it with me until I decided between the cordless and the corded varieties. Cut to about 15 minutes later. I was coming out of the restroom and picked up the box that I set aside outside the entrance when she was coming in and she laughed and said, "You were serious about hanging onto it!"

The going rate depends on the job completed.

For the orbital palm sander I hope you chose the corded one. Sometimes sanding projects take a long time, and you will want the power of the corded sander without having to worry that the battery will wear out.

I did not and you are right; I had to recharge the battery. The problem is that the work is being done in a detached garage with no outlets so unless I want to buy several extension cords and leave my door cracked, cordless was where it was at. Plus, I didn't have to buy the battery because we already have a charger and battery at work. It's okay; there are few projects that I can't split up according to my availability. I just wanted to take advantage of our 50 degree day today, which won't happen again likely.

Avoiding paper cuts does not equate a workout. You can do better!

I've done a little over 7200 steps so far today. I could have done more but I didn't really get out and stretch my legs until 5pm so if you take that into account, I've done really well!

I do usually switch to spin classes in the winter. I will likely add those in too. But I need to train for the weather impact too. It's going to be very windy and the temps will be all over the place and that's part of the conditioning to be able to tolerate weather as well as getting the miles in...

I went to the gym today and did the stairmaster for 37 minutes. My pattern was 2 minutes each level, with levels:

7,6,5,4,3,2,1,2,3,4,3,2,1 (and then the rest 1s).

I had not been to the gym since October 8th, so it was not easy! I get asthma in the winter so this definitely set off some asthma (not horrible, but not pleasant).

When I got into the gym, I had forgotten how hard it was to get onto the actual machine, to start working out.

Since I get a good amount of walking through my new job and because I'd been working way to late of hours and not sleeping well, I'd been just not doing the gym.

I also had an annoying time with Taylor. She was extra skinny although maybe I just had forgotten how anorexic / young she looks. And granted she likely was thinking that I was extra fat at this time because I am. Her skin was white as a ghost in contrast to her jet black hair.

She was in a really bad mood / anxious because her grandfather is close to death, and she already lost her grandmother earlier in the year, and those are the people who raised her.

She told me about how a family that her billionaire "Ross", for whom she is the house manager, had allowed friends of a friend stay for the weekend at his home without him there, and Taylor said they had left it in terrible shape. Okay, but are you ready?

Taylor said, "It's making me antisemitic because they were Jewish." Now, unless you're from Mars, it's very easy to look at me and see that I'm Jewish. So, yeah, not so much, Taylor! I didn't say anything, because, really, there was not much to say to that.

In any case, it was a type of day where it was nice not having gone to the gym in a while. And I also had to take Advil when I got home because the pressure of doing the stairmaster at such a high intensity after not having done it in so long gave me a wicked headache.

Looks like easygoingfemme is knocking it out of the park again. Thanks for being such an inspiration. I have a lot more respect for you folks doing this out in the cold weather then I did before I actually had to try it for a while.

Hey Jen, I’m sorry you had to go through that with Taylor. Something I learned a couple of years back when I was doing ellipticals in a gym was about getting headaches. For whatever reason I would get a slamming headache about 10 minutes into my cardio session and couldn’t figure out why because I felt fine when I started. I finally got around to looking it up and found out that there was a high likelihood that I was starting out a bit dehydrated, after that I started drinking a bottle of water before I got on and kept drinking throughout, for me at least, that was the problem and the headaches went away. Probably unrelated for you, but maybe worth a try.

The last couple of days have been lousy tides compounded by the presence of plumbers but I’ve been working around the house and I’ve been getting 14,000 to 16,000 steps per day. I just noticed that in the revised “trend“ part of the steps summary it is also giving me year over year, so far 2019 I’m getting double the average steps per day that I did in 2018. This is especially significant for me because the first six months of 2019 we’re almost completely sedentary which means I’m probably actually doing around quadruple of 2018. Now, if I can just keep improving year-over-year I think it might be a healthier way for me to look at goals.

It was a satisfying pattern.

While on the stair master I watched the same episode of Judge Judy on youtube that I watched yesterday and enjoyed it again. Tomorrow: a new episode.

I got in a little over 7000 steps before midnight. My problem is dinner. Once I eat dinner, I turn into a slug and don't move much.

Yesterday was a 5K row. Today will be 5 or 7K.

It's icy out. My riding partner went out in it yesterday and wiped out twice. I'm considering snow tires for my bike...

Same here: Just got back from a leisurely walk (2 miles).

Some neighbor friends of mine were going to help me carry my bike downstairs and help me get up on it, but I still cannot get my one leg to lift on its own, without help. Plus, my lumbar section is like frozen in place or something. It's like the muscles have not forgotten the traffic crash that crashed my lumbar section.

Everything takes time, but I am glad I can walk on my own.

Keep on keeping on (Hey Greco, sayin' "Hello" to ya!) :balloon:

Happy Sunday to all,
:tea:

8000 steps so far. Pretty good considering I didn't wake up until after 10am.

Well, it’s been a jumbled up few days and my routine got all scrambled. We had two days of very strong rain and wind and since was this is the first rain I’ve seen at all since I’ve been here I thought it best to hang around and see if anything was going to leak or break or some other shoe might drop. It turned out fine and I only have one section of gutter to work on but I ended up staying home and not moving around much at all. I would’ve much preferred to go down to the beach just to be in the storminess of it all. It sounds like I will have an opportunity for that in the next two or three days. :cheesy:

The next couple of days were great weather and tides so I was able to get out and survey the destruction down there. A fair amount of sand got moved around, and a sizable chunk of large kelp forest got tossed up along about a half a mile section. It was the really fun kind with the long bull whips and the “antlers“ coming off the top of the ball. I remember loving playing with those as a kid up in Washington state. So, got an a good number of steps on those days. 15,000 and 20,000 respectively.

Today for a change of pace I went to a street festival (I never met a festival I didn’t like) and it was that slow, wandering, looking at things kind of walking on concrete that for some reason just takes it out of me. 10k

All in all over the last seven days I’ve averaged 12,300. Not as much as I would like, but I’ll take it.

One more bit, I saw something I had not seen before and that was three horses being trained down on the beach. Training to do what I’m not sure, walk in the sand? Anyway they were very interesting looking so I went and asked one of the riders what sort they were, I was told they had just been shipped in a month ago from Iceland. No idea what that was about, but good looking horses.

7,000 steps. Just being a worker bee. Likely more because I forgot my fitbit and had to go by my iphone! Always a bit frustrating.

I must admit-

The cold and damp weather has taken its toll. I prefer all things *outdoor*sy for my exercise. The Kansas weather has not been my friend-

Nevertheless: I have bundled up and continue to walk my normal route when I can-(not a comfortable time)- I am dedicated when its above 40 degrees (without the windchill involved).

I must admit: I admire everyone of you dedicated folks!

Today was a chemo day. While I waited for mom I walked up five flights of stairs twice. Then took a walk that was a little over four miles. I walked in a cemetery. There were several graves of veterans of the revolutionary war. Pretty interesting.

This evening I walked again for about 30 minutes, rode the stationary bike and a couple other random exercises.

I was away Thursday through today (Sunday) in Florida with family, and I didn't really pay attention to the Fitbit while away. On Thursday (12/28) I did get a decent amount of steps logged on my iphone (6,500) and today (Sunday) my Fitbit has me at 7,000. Those were both airport travel days which always mean a lot of steps.

Today was 6900 steps. I bet it was 7K but I took off my Fitbit too soon, thinking I was going to go to bed - but I should know myself better than that. It's more like, "Oh, I should go to bed." And then, "Oh, look, there's a chicken!"

You crack me up, nycfem!

My a1c went up by one point and my meds stay the same; but my doctor said to quit eating carrots and drinking carrot juice because carrots and the carrot juice are loaded with natural sugars which my body can't handle (anymore). So boo, but ok, I'll stop eating carrots and drinking carrot juice. It's probably why I gained ten pounds, LOL (or not).

I am getting a fitbit this weekend. I saw one that is not too costly, so I'm gonna splurge and get one. My doctor said that at this point, I have to boost my exercise by walking longer (if I can tolerate it).

Once I get the fit bit, I'll come back and post my numbers and I will journal how many steps I'm getting in daily/weekly and journal what I am eating.

My goal is to step up my exercise levels in ways that helps me to better mitigate the a1c dilemma I constantly work on daily and hopefully lose the ten pounds I gained since this summer.

Today was 3.9 miles. And at least 1/2 mile of that was a jog/walk.
I actually amazed myself. I have not jogged in years, well, at least on purpose. Lol.
It wasn't as hard as I thought it was.

Definitely, there will be a better bra needed and perhaps a more supportive shoe.

I was inspired by a movie I recently watched. 😉

While mom was in chemo I walked 3.7 miles. I got interrupted by a man and and his dog. Super cute dog.

After dinner I walked for about 30 minutes with my nephew Slayde. It was cold but his banter made it enjoyable. He was explaining to me how he gave up pop. :)

I've lost 24 lbs since 9/16. I was worried because I fell off the wagon Thanksgiving weekend. I have 5.4 lbs to go to make my first goal by end of the year.

This morning I walked 3 miles and my plan is to go to the gym later for the circuit class.

I'm taking the plunge and getting a Fitbit too! My work will subsidize the cost, but only until the end of this year. I'm really interested in seeing what the sleep function can tell me.

I will be starting off pretty low with steps - I have no idea how low, because I don't know how many steps I take in a day. But I have to start from where I am, right?

I bought the Inspire HR Fitbit but ended up taking it back. The sleep function was interesting but I hated sleeping with it on. Plus, it would say I had swam for 14 minutes in the morning. The heart rate function was good. I like the step counter but I didn't feel like it was always accurate.

I encourage you to check them out though, Georgia. Good luck on your journey.

Thanks, Wrang1er! The Inspire HR fitbit is the one I ordered. Hopefully it will work for me. I have to wonder what you were doing in your sleep that it interpreted as swimming for 14 minutes!

I did go to the gym and took the 30 minute circuit class. I also took a PF360 Refresh class. It's supposed to be this: Focus on flexibility, core work, and proper breathing in this yoga-like experience. It was actually just stretching and some lower back strengthening exercise.

Well, swimming, of course.

Actually, it's possible. Unless you video your sleep, you don't know for sure if you are actually moving your arms up and down. A lot of people sleep with their arms above their heads. The average person moves 13 times an hour during sleep. Some move more than 100 times per hour. Maybe you fidget in your sleep?

I woke up like that once. It was weird, because I'm not one of those people. Usually, I'm tucked under the covers like a human burrito. It would be interesting to see what Fitbit says I do when I sleep (but not so much as to actually pay for it).

I'm just under 5000 steps today. I've spent a LOT of time sitting in waiting rooms today.

That is pretty nice that your work will subsidize the cost, Georgia. I too have no idea how many steps I'm getting in per day, but after I pick up my device, I will know without a doubt. The "Fitbit" I saw was at a retailer (Big Lots), so it might not be a bonafide Fitbit, but it does count steps and it tags your heart rate, things like that. I saw it this past weekend and I almost bought it then. I think the price was just under $50. If it's not the same as Fitbit, I may ask my clinic if they have a similar device I can buy via the clinic. They're pretty resourceful, with things of this nature. As I recall, two years ago I needed a mobile B/P cuff and a those things you use to monitor your blood glucose (the strips, the machine, the finger pricking thingy, etc) which my health insurance wouldn't let me get for free. But they got it for me, so maybe they could help me get a Fitbit device too. Or something like it.

Remember: Low numbers are just as good as higher numbers, in some cases. Proportionally, I am hoping for the best outcome possible... for us all. It's almost like an AA meeting for me, in my mind. One step at a time.

Cheers to all the exercisers tonight. :hk28:

I have an app on my super smart phone. It calculates my steps, if I'm wearing my phone. Thank you back pocket!

Also calculates milage and time. Tells me when I sleep, have no idea how that works, it sits on the nightstand. Asks me how my sleep was, restful or doing the backstroke, lol.
I can check my heartbeat, oxygen and stress level as well.

Works for me!!
