Today was (will be) 7000 steps. I'm stoked. I still can't get over how my last job was 2-3K steps and this job is so much higher. I know, not exactly fascinating to keep repeating, but... I'm fascinated!

Hey-hey and hello, everyone, hope you all had a great day!

One of my pals at work downloaded an pedometer app to my phone, so when I carry my phone on me, I can see how many steps I am getting in. LOL, I don't always carry my phone on me, so it might not represent an accurate picture of what my day in steps might be. The app recorded 921 steps, when I had my phone on me.

So, I kind of looked online for information on how many steps I ought to get in each day and I came up with a recent article titled (Link embedded in the title): How Many Pedometer Steps Should I Aim For Each Day? (https://www.verywellfit.com/how-many-pedometer-steps-per-day-are-enough-3432827)

Interestingly enough, *cough cough*, the art of getting enough steps into your life started out "as a promotion by a Japanese company in the 1960s and it became popular as it was adopted by walking clubs" (first paragraph cited in the article).

Also, Catrine Tudor-Locke, researcher from University of Massachussetts, has studied pedometer walking for many years. Here's several category's that represent the types of steps/walking and what it might mean:

Sedentary Lifestyle Index: Under 5,000 steps per day is an indicator of being inactive and sitting too much, which raises health risks.

Low Active: 5,000 to 7,499 steps per day is typical of daily activity excluding sports and exercise and might be considered low active. The average American walks 5,900 to 6,900 steps per day, putting the majority in the low active category.

Somewhat Active: 7,500 to 9,999 steps per day likely includes some exercise or walking (and/or a job that requires more walking) and might be considered somewhat active.

Active: 10,000 steps per day indicates the point that should be used to classify individuals as active. This makes it a good daily goal for healthy people who want a quick indicator they are getting in their daily exercise.

Highly Active: Individuals who take more than 12,500 steps/day are likely to be classified as highly active.

The above categories, I presume, operate on the idea that the average person had no mobility impacts. I have mobility impacts, so I will not be taking the categories too seriously. *BUT*, I do like the idea that I can set some sort of goal to increase the steps I take in life, as long as I am not causing any sort of other impact to my mobility impacts.

The steps I took today amazed me, given that I have trouble with walking. So I can understand your excitement nycfem, that you are amazed at the amount of steps you are getting in, nowadays. That's fabulous and I am excited for you!

Check out this video I found on pedometer fitness ideas, everyone. It even has ideas for those of us who have mobility impacts or ideas for those who want to get more steps in at home vs the work environment (etc).

I have Good News and I have Bad News.

The good news is that yesterday, for the first time since I got pneumonia, I was able to walk all the way from my desk to the restroom without having to sit down for a break at the elevators. That's about 150 steps in all, whereas when I took a break at the elevators I was making it about 100 steps before I had to take a break. Go, me!

The bad news is that it looks like the fitbit is not going to work out for me. I walk with a rollator, and the fitbit doesn't record the steps I take while I'm holding onto the rollator. :readfineprint:

I'm interested in the phone apps that record steps. Which ones do you all use?

I actually asked myself yesterday if the phone app was recording a reliable count because I walk with a cane and I too also use my roller walker when I don't feel like I can walk too far without having a seat to sit down on. I use my roller walker on long extended walks on the weekends, but I use my cane for the most part.

Here's the thing, though, that seems more reasonable, concerning measurement of our daily activities: I know if I walk for one hour, then body organs (lungs, heart, blood vessels, muscles, etc) benefit by that exercise, right? I know that my favorite walking route is about 3.1 miles. It takes me about two hours or so to walk it, leisurely, because I can not walk fast. I push my limits sometimes, but I'm not going to put myself in danger by doing something that could make my situation worse.

I am tickled for you that you got in your steps today! Go Georgia!!!

I do know that my PT team and my current primary physician have told me that it's more important to focus on types of exercise I am capable of doing, which I know swim therapy and leisurely walks and bedroom exercise (legs and hips routine, I do each morning) keeps me from being a slug muffin.

What counts is what counts for each person. That's my motto.

Like our exercise friend Greco nearly always says.... Keep On Keepin' On.

Cheers and Happy Friday friends.

I use the Pacer app on my phone. Not sure it would work on a rollator. It works for a bicycle from what I understand.

It's not an app and is limited in what it can measure but I think a pedometer would work better with walking accessories because you can clip it to a belt or slide it in your pocket and you customize it to your specific gate.

3DTrisport Pedometer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPYr96tMIQQ)

It's the one I got and it's great. I can see my steps, my caloric burn and the distance walked each day. Most of the features reset at midnight every day so you can keep each day separate. Also, compared to Fitbits and whatnot, it's crazy affordable. I got mine through Amazon.

Did you know that Thomas Jefferson is credited with inventing a pedometer of 200 years ago?

Yesterday was 6000 for me (probably a bit more but I didn't glance back at my fitbit until after midnight).

See, I wondered if you would find the categorical system as interesting as I did. But, I can't help but wonder how people who are differently abled (me and a whole bunch of us in our online community) felt as badly as I did because being that I can't bicycle 22 miles a day, like I used too three years ago - after my work related accident, and barely able to eke out 1K steps a day (if that is even possible), I felt badly that I sit at the 'sedentary' line of exercise. Hence, why I adopt my new motto: What Counts For Each Person Is What Counts (said in my best Count Dracula voice from Sesame Street). :jester: :vigil: :eyebat: :hk20: :bunchflowers::bunchflowers::bunchflowers:

Here is my exercise report for today (tomorrow is Slug-Muffin day with my Girls Day Out for Movies, Dining and Shopping Therapy):

-- Got up at 5 am; showered, changed into weekend attire, stuffed all my laundry into my pretty teal colored laundry hamper, then drug it out to the car after I descended down a whole bunch of stairs.

--Drove over to my fav washeteria, Santa Hat in tow for my butch friend who takes care of the washeteria (I gave it to her, she loves that hat, LOL), put my laundry on to wash, then went down the road to the grocery store to load up on fresh salad mixes, berries, Oat 'Milk' Froth-Like-A-Boss Oatmeal Cookie flavored coffee creamer (what a deal, 5 quarts for $5) -- I use it on my oatmeal too, a bunch of my favorite meatless Meat Balls, ChikN patties, etc., and found a good buy on 5 pairs of wool boot socks - cuz they're soft and comfy to kick around in, inside the studio. Loaded up the groceries, returned to washeteria to dry my clothes.

-- Loaded up my laundry, returned home, unloaded the car, put all my stuff in the laundry basket, drug it across the parking lake (LOL, I might need a couple oars and a raft soon), drug it up all the stairs to my studio, one stair step at a time, oh boy, it was a work-out for sure, then put it all away in the fridge and freezer and put my clothes away.

-- sat down for a moment or two to catch my breath, then got out my light-weight vacuum and went to town vacuuming the carpets and hard wood floors. Moved a few things around, then mopped the wood floors with Murphy's Oil Soap, then sat down to wait for the floor to dry.

--- I did all of the above between the hours of 5am to 11am.

-- I had not had any breakfast except my morning meds and a small cup of black decaf coffee, so I whipped up a small lunch of the last few tiny Black Bean tamales and put them on a small bed of sweet kale salad mix and then used the poppy seed dressing and pumpkin seeds on top of it all. I literally 'inhaled' it as I was ravenous.

Two hours later, after washing up the dishes and dusting and cleaning the bathroom, I am now relaxing in my big ole leather Mama's chair and watching it rain cats and dogs outside.

Thankful we finally got a dose of rain today, and I'm sure it's a blizzard up on the mountain tops, but that's where we need the snow and rain and soon, after the shortest day of the year (Dec 21), we will have Cherry Blossom Heaven in mid February.

Time stands still for no one, but I'm glad to be here and glad to be present among the living and one step at a time, I will be getting my steps counted.

I used to have a small trampoline, but don't know what happened to it. I'm going to get a small trampoline and use my two biggest walking poles, to steady myself and do trampoline 'dancing' with my two tallest walking poles. I hope to find a new miniature trampoline after the winter holidays, so I can add that type of exercise to my daily exercise routines. I will place it near my bed, so if I lose my balance I can just fall into bed. :jester:

Happy Saturday friends. I hope you're having a wonderful day today!

Gait, not gate.

Doh.

It can also clip to the neckline of your shirt and still count accurately.

Today's count so far is 7331 steps and it's not even 7pm! Tonight is gonna be a big count because I still have work to do on a craft project and I tend to do that stuff standing so I'll get in plenty more steps.

Today, Monday 12/9, was 8000 steps, mainly from work. Oh, Monday!

That's awesome, nycfem!

I found a fitbit at WM but it's out of my price range - for right now. I have two annual bills that come due the last of January, so after that? I will see if I can budget for the least expensive one I saw at WM.

Today I was on desk duty, so I didn't get too many steps in. I counted my steps by heart and as of five minutes after I got home, I only had about 720 steps.

Also, my s-i-l came up with a really good idea for me, on how to get some swim therapy time in, on the weekends. I signed up for a weekend pass, with a senior discount, and I can use the pool and hot-tub-spa-jet pool in the afternoons on Saturday's.

Tomorrow is Tuesday, so I hope to see more steps tomorrow. :cheerleader:

I hope it works for you! The company is very interactive and will send you an email with additional details and whatnot. I found walking through the set up video online worked best for me to calibrate it, but it only took about 5 minutes to get it all set up. I took longer to figure out my step calibration but that wasn't bad either. I used a tape measure and the cats didn't like the sound of it retracting. They looked at me like I was injuring them somehow.

Okay, I think I have a plan that works now. At home, where I don't use my rollator, I wear my fitbit. When I leave for work, I take the pedometer in my pocket. This is better anyway because I'd rather have something in my pocket at work than wear something on my wrist. Then I switch back to the fitbit at home.

(Using the pedometer at home is not necessarily possible because I don't always have pockets at home. I'll leave it to you to figure out why.)

I wonder if there's a way to update the steps on my fitbit so it will include all my steps? Part of the deal with my work subsidizing the cost of the fitbit was that I'm supposed to connect it to some database of all the university employees that are participating. (I know, Big Brother is watching.)

That sounds like a plan. If the Fitbit still doesn't quite do it for you, the pedometer can be put on a lanyard around your neck too.

um... Thanks for the laugh! (cough... you ain't the only one!) lol :)

Seriously, though, I commend all who make an effort to move around and get exercise by whatever means they are physically able to.

For my own part, I went and paid my cable bill (Shaw) at their office on Monday. I could just as easily pay the bill at my bank, just around the corner, or even have them withdraw the amount automatically through my bank, monthly. However, going out and paying it directly, I have to walk and walk, take two buses, and walk some more, and then come home, all of which gives me an outing, and some walking exercise.

So Saturday, I kept track of steps I took while shopping and while walking from various areas of interest. Saturday's step count turned out to be 1622.

I also spent about two hours at the community center swimming pool, during free swim. I did a lot of walking in the pool, lap style; plus I did 'jogging' type steps in place. That part of the count turned out to be 559 extra steps.

So the grand total for Saturday was 2181 steps.

Sunday I spent the day mostly resting in bed, after Saturday's work out.

Today at work, I counted 1367 steps. Today was a mild day at work, step wise. My busiest days at work are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

I will keep track of steps the next three days and report about my step count by Friday night.

That's such a great idea, easygoingfemme, getting your snow shoes out. I am guessing that it's not just the steps you would take using snow shoes since your glutes and other muscles will get a major workout, right?

Gemme's right, Wrangler. I remember a meme, years ago, which pictured a doodling line, going everywhere but straight. Sometimes it's the 'doodling' that helps us to define our goals and commitments with a deeper understanding about what we can or cannot do. Keep with it (citing Gemme)!

I'm with nycfem: I feel uplifted when I see the type of results I log with my step counts.

Does anyone keep track of hydration, during the day or when you're working out? I do. I try to drink a quart of water every two hours, when I am at work. When I go on a Step Excursion, I purposely drink half a quart before and after. Sometimes it's more. I aim to hydrate as often as possible, and when I do, I notice I don't tire so easily. I met my hydration goal of 1.5 gallons of water today. During summer I boost my water hydration to nearly two gallons, daily. That's a tougher goal to accomplish, so I am paying closer attention, come this summer.

I parked between two stores, and the furthest away. I also went to a musical event tonight and did the stairs in the parking structure.

Guess what I got for Christmas, Guys and Dolls?

I received a Fitbit Light (with a Lilac colored wrist band)!!! :cheer:

In less than one hour, after I put it on and my sil's daughter got it all set up with the program, I logged 844 steps. After I got home and unloaded the car, and made multiple trips up and down the stairs, my Fitbit says I logged 1145 steps. Wow, right? I must have not been counting my steps by heart the right way: I think I was counting two steps as a pair of steps, which in my mind was one step, lol. So I must be getting between 8K to 9K steps daily, since I am basically basing my approximate steps taken on the count the wristband device counted in one hour, tonight.

That is exciting to me. I still have balance troubles, I still don't walk as fast as my counter-parts at work. I am a slow walker, but it made me feel good tonight to know that I am not as sedentary as I thought I might be, based on stuff I have been reading over the past few weeks.

Now that I have a Fitbit, I will come back by next weekend, after New Years Eve, to give a short report on my walking/steps progress. We will see if my estimate steps come close to the real count of steps recorded by my new Fitbit device.

Hey, it even records my heart rate, sleep cycles and a bunch of other things too. I can hardly believe I got a Fitbit for Christmas, but am so excited to have one (thanks to my in-laws)! :balloon:

That new fitness device sure tells you a lot of stuff about the steps you take, the type of gait you have, the calories you burn, stuff about your heart rate and cardio fitness.

Sooooo, today at work, I logged 8911 steps. My cardio range was sustained for nearly an hour at approximately 116. I was burning fat at the recorded range of 84. I learned I have an usual long gait, which I kind of already know about, since I have really long legs. But what is interesting to me is that I sustain a fuck ton of pain while walking: I have an unreal case of high pain tolerance. As an example, lol or not, when my physical therapy team was doing "Light Therapy" on my lumbar injuries, they were doing it at the lowest possible setting and told me to tell them when it was too much to endure or if I was in pain. Five minutes into the first session, I told them I was feeling nauseated, and before they could decide to stop I lost consciousness and peed all over the place after I blacked out from the low-impact Light Therapy treatment they were giving to me. I've tried to explain this unusual pain tolerance issue to them and other physicians for years, but the day that happened to me was the day my PT team learned that they didn't know enough about my set of injury factors and how my body acts under pressure of pain.

I am definitely going to do screen shots of fitness records on a daily basis and show it to my primary physician so it will give her a better idea of my mobility range and the pain I endure daily and each night. I have a stash of non-narcotic muscle relaxers I use on special case situations, where I feel the pain I am in might lead to nausea and loss of consciousness.

I'm okay tonight, but my body is not happy.

So that's my record of steps today at work and today was not exactly a full day at work. We're still operating on Holiday hours and will be until the first of the new year.

So there it is: I'm active; but not like in ordinary ways due to the mobility issues I have been enduring since November of 2016. I can hear my doctor now. She's most likely going to say.... "That's just lovely." lolol (or not).

My experience today was of some beautiful sights. When I looked to the south, big huge rolling thick light grey clouds. The fog coming off the gulf. I'm about an hour away, but they made their huge presence. As I walked my neighborhood, just as the sun was going down, the beautiful Christmas lights were coming alive! The beauty of dusk against a sparkling house, with the slice of the moon and the northern star showing up. Ahh, it was a great exercise decision at that time !

I walked for 73 min. Listening to the Greatest hits of Journey. Great stepping tunes!!.
On purpose, it was 3.8 miles with 8132 steps..in probably an hour. I did take time to share and text my sunset journey😀

Warm compresses and gentle stretching should help a bit.

It's a short day at work for me but I want to either get into the gym or do some reorganization at home today so I should have a decent step count by day's end. I just got up so only 182 steps so far.

Go Georgia! Nice work on your step count. :cheerleader:

I'm like Gemme today, got some stuff to do around the house (manicure, trim and color my hair, dishes …). I have a small count started today already. Yesterday my count was around 5K+. I earned a Step Badge last Thursday when my count went past 10K and on Friday, I sailed past 11K. Hence why today is Slug-Muffin Sunday :jester: :| :eyebat:

The best part of my day is checking in on Nycfem's exercise thread because I feel everyone is so supportive and it helps me to recommit each day to doing the best I can.

Dec. 18: 8,500K
Dec. 19: 10K (sick but work had to be done)

I'm sorry to hear you've been sick, nycfem, but I hope you begin to feel better soon. :bunchflowers:

So last Wednesday, the day of Christmas, is the day I got my Fitbit Light as a prezzie. So my weekly results run between Wed to Wed.

Here is what my Fitbit email said, earlier this morning:

Total steps since last Wednesday: 34,926.
Average daily steps: 4,929.
Best day was last Friday: 11,370 steps.
Total miles: 15.91
Daily average calorie burn: 3,641
Interesting bonus item: I am down 1 pound since last week.

I think it's interesting that it says that my caloric burn was over 3600. I am lucky if I consume about 1800 calories in any given day. I do have to stay on top of water consumption because staying hydrated helps my body process medications I take and it helps me to have clear thinking powers. So I drink a lot of water, but I still feel I am not getting enough water.

The data collected by my Fitbit is nearly as accurate as it can be, minus the times I don't wear it, which I take it off once I get home from work. My step numbers might be a tiny bit higher, but not by much because once I get home from work, I am exhausted from being on my feet all day long. So I rest because I seriously need to. :vigil:

Same here, nycfem, we shall see how things turn out, as the new year progresses.

Here's to 2020. :blueheels:

Katz, it sounds like the calorie burn feature is way off, even if it's taking your total calorie burn for each day into consideration.

Here's a chart (https://www.verywellfit.com/pedometer-steps-to-calories-converter-3882595) that breaks down the average caloric burn from a pedometer.

I'm working to increase my water intake as well and have done a lot of research on this! A good rule of thumb is to divide your weight in half and that's the amount of ounces you should be taking in daily. A 200 lb person should be drinking 100 ounces of water, 100% fruit juice and Gatorade (or other similar electrolyte drink) daily. If someone drinks something with caffeine (soda, tea, coffee), you need to drink 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of that beverage you take in because caffeine dehydrates you.

Also, and I think this part won't apply to you, Katz, as you tend to eat very healthy but eating fatty foods leaches water from your body as it takes more water to process the food and break it down. So those eating that type of food need even more water.

I think you are correct because A) I mis-quoted the number for the caloric burn (it's 2641, not 3641) and B) here is the copy and paste of how the Fitbit email stated it:

2,641
avg. daily calorie burn
▲ 713 cals. over last week

I went to the gym today, and it wasn't as crowded as one might think which was refreshing. Maybe because I went in the evening. Who knows.

I did 30 minutes on the stairmaster. Pattern:

Levels 5,4,3,2,1, 2 minutes each level x 2 sets

Levels 5,4,3, 2,1, one minute each level, x 1 set

Level 1 x 5 minutes

My heart rate was up to the 160s. It was a rigorous work-out but very satisfying.

Then I did 30 minutes on the weight floor doing stretches, kettleballs, yoga, and ab and back exercises.

It really felt good to get back in the gym. I haven't really done much in the gym for the 4 months that I've been at my job, and I could certainly feel it.

I'm hoping I am making a comeback :praying:

I sure do know about the pain factor, it's hard on me (most days). I hope your pain subsides soon, Georgia.

I logged over 10K again today. But it was only because I have been on a holiday schedule at work, covering for a person who will be back tomorrow, thank heavens. Looking at the past few days of the recorded steps I have done, it looks like only three of the five work days I am logging over 10K. On the other days at work, I log about 5-7K steps. New Years day I only had 22, but that's because I took it off and recharged the Fitbit, for the rest of the week. I'm guessing I only logged about 1K steps because I too was hurting (Lumbar section and legs and feet) and I was good to myself and rested a lot.

I spoke earlier about my sister-in-law mentioning about signing up for pool time at a nearby rec center and I am going to put that on my To-Do list, so I can go to the pool on the weekends, right after I do laundry and household catch-up chores on the weekends. I hope to add that cachet of exercise experience to my portfolio of activities by early March. I got my swim suit and pool booties (for my feet), so I am good to go once I pay for my spring and summer pool pass. I'm looking forward to that. And achieving the ability to bicycle further than the parking lot. I can only ride around the parking lot at home, for short periods of time because I still have balance issues and I need to strengthen my leg muscles and upper torso muscles so I can respond quickly when I need to bring the bike to a halt, etc. That is my long range goal, riding my bike for longer periods of time, by summer, is what I hope to achieve. We'll see. Slow and safe wins the proverbial race, right now in my life.

Sending wellness wishes to Georgia and Nycfem and anyone else who is feeling under the weather lately. Here's hoping all of you feel better soon.

On Thursday I walked 9K and did an hour at the gym: 45 minutes on the stairmaster, and 15 minutes of stretching and yoga.

I am still sick, but it's actually been helping me to go to the gym --not that it makes it easy! Today my fave stairmaster was in use so I was doomed to the Matrix stairmaster which I hate. I did 30 minutes with my heart rate in the 160s. It was grueling! I also couldn't find anything to watch on Netflix that I liked, so that made it much harder. Then I did 30 minutes on the weight floor. I lifted weights which I haven't done in months and that was energizing.

I ran into my 80 year old pal, Miriam. She was just getting over being sick. I said, "What were you sick with? Did you have a cold or the flu?" She said in her ornery style, "Everyone wants to put a label on being sick! Who cares! I was sick!" It sounds from what she described like it was a bad cold, lol. I saw her slip some money to the lowest paid level of gym staffers for the New Year so who can do anything but love Miriam :rrose:

I'm still sick, but the gym actually feels helpful. Today I got my favorite stairmaster. I could hardly believe my good fortune given how crowded it was (26 people on the cardio equipment in my area). My pattern was:

Levels 4,3,2,1 x 2 minutes each level x 3 sets
Levels 3,2,1 x 2 minutes each level x 1 set
Then Level 1s until I hit 30 minutes

Heart rate was 150s/160's/170.

I watched "The staircase" on netflix which I've already seen but I think it's a good one.

Then I did 30 minutes on the weight floor. My New Year's Resolution is to not neglect the more spiritual part of my work-out which is all the yoga/stretching and body work that I do on the weight floor.

Will I ever stop being sick? Mid-January will be a month. I think I'm getting better, and I do tend to get at least one bad-ass cold / sinus infection every winter. This one is a real doozy.

Today I did 40 minutes on my favorite stairmaster, pattern:

Levels 5,4,3,2,1 with 2 minutes at each level x 3 sets
Level 1 until I hit 40 minutes

HR 160s/170s (i.e. high AF)

Then I did 20 minutes on the weight floor, as per my New Year's Resolution (to not give into the ease of just strolling off after my cardio).

I'm feeling so good at my progress, and I just hope I can continue it.

I walked 5K today.

I saw Taylor today in passing but we didn't talk, as we were going in different directions. I think she was about to go in the sauna. She was talking from across the room to La La. Taylor has told me La La generates to her because they are both thought to be anorexic. La La wants to bond with Taylor over being accused of being anorexic. Taylor thinks La La is anorexic and wants to keep a distance from her because Taylor doesn't want to realize she's anorexic. They both have dark hair and are very pretty and are alarmingly skin and bones. They were smiling at each other in that way when one talks across the room to someone, and they looked like mirror images.

I've been talking every day in the locker room with an older Columbian woman named Iris. She's thin and fit and quite beautiful inside and out. She's not crazy like most of my gym people. We have pleasant conversations. I would never feel as excited about Iris as I do about my crazy cronies but I do care for Iris a lot. She told me she has insomnia today, and I was very excited, not just because I do too, but because she's not the type to necessarily mention any problem. I was intrigued, and we discussed it quite awhile. One could dig and dig with Iris and never hit crazy, so I'll take what I can get. And actually she's a relief from Taylor who can be a bit frightful to talk to, even if she is an interesting character.

La La was wearing sort of festive velvet scrunchies in her hair, but she never stops to talk. One can only talk to La La by following along with her, which, of course, I often do.

I just got home from work... at this moment, my fitbit says I have walked 9886 steps, which is nearly 5 miles. I didn't wear my smart watch (the Fitbit) over the weekend because I stayed mostly in bed or sat in my big momma chair, resting. The extended walking I do at work takes a toll on me. So I have high mileage days some days; other days I'm lucky if my step count peaks near 5K.

You mention, nycfem, that you've been down sick with your cold for nearly a month. When I went on board with my former boss last October, I came down really, reaaallllly sick with a head cold. I was better in about 6 or seven weeks, but I've been hacking up crud since October. I think this has been a serious season for colds and flu. And I often muse if it's because the environment is getting worse, as the years go by? Not sure, but I haven't been this sick since before I was hurt on the job back in 2016. My doctor said that my coming down so sick was related to stressful events when I went back to work; that the stress just accumulated and took a huge toll on my already fragile health. If I am finally over this by February, I'll be happy and hope to not come down sick like this ever again (well, at least not for a long, long time).

Also, I have tons of anxiety nowadays, so I won't be wearing my fitbit to log any hours of sleep. If I sleep, then great. *LOL* If I don't sleep too good, then it will only stress me out more to know that I'm not sleeping as good as I could or should or whatever one might say or think. I'm just happy I get some rest every night. I feel so lucky when I sleep for longer than 8 hours.

I had such a great work-out today. And I'm still sick. But I think I'm gradually getting better. Still... It's outrageous. I have a productive cough that frightens people. I've always had sinus and lung issues. I'm starting to realize I'm considered a pariah at the gym and at work because of the cough. I've taken meds, rested, been to the doctor twice- just hoping I kick this thing soon.

Today I did 40 minutes on my favorite stairmaster. Pattern:

Levels 5,4,3,2,1 x 2 min. each level x 3 sets (then level 1s for cooldown).

Then I did my NY Resolution of 20 min. on the weight floor (lifting and stretching / yoga).

It felt divine.

I finally had my post New Year's catch up with Taylor. She was crying because her grandparents have both died this year and they are the ones who raised her. On a lighter note, she busted out (so to speak) with, "You have good boobs!" I politely thanked her. We were in the locker room so I was bare chested. She was wearing bra and panties and told me that she had gained a few pounds and could I tell. I said no. She looks VERY skinny as always. I also saw La La today, again in passing. Brushing my teeth and doing my back exercises at the same time seems to take some of the drudgery out of doing both chores. Plus, multitasking saves time!

Yesterdays exercise was crazy. Our weather was predicted t be at about 55 degrees which is a huge treat at this time of year. My riding partner and I decided on a morning ride. At home we both decided a T-shirt and long pants was enough but... pack a windbreaker just in case. By the time I got to her house to meet up to hit the road the temps had dropped 10 degrees. When we got to our starting destination it had dropped another 10 degrees and the wind was whipping. We had to shout at each other to be heard over it while we were getting ready and the wind knocked my partner's bike over twice which is not cool at all. Once we got out we saw that the trail we hoped was clear had a lot of strips of ice and black ice so we were doing a lot of ride/walk/ride/walk including crossing bridges that were almost solid ice. My cycling shoes are slick and hard with just the clips that lock into my pedals so...no traction. It was not glamorous. After a few miles we decided to head out on the main road that ran parallel to the trail because it would be less icy. But holy cow the wind--- I almost got blown over sideways about 10 times. Like just had to ride with my shoes not clipped in so I could stop fast as possible and get my feet on the ground to not get blown over. My partner carries more weight and wasn't blown around quite as badly but still was powering through headwinds that were almost pushing us to a dead stop. We did not hit the mileage we had hoped for, to say the least.

Yeah, there was a high wind advisory both Saturday and Sunday. Good on you for powering through!

I didn't get a lot of steps in (3963) but I wasn't slothly so I feel like it was a good day.

I took a couple days off from wearing my Fitbit. But I've been averaging between 7-8.8K steps per day, sometimes more. Today it was 7988.

I have a question though, about the Fitbit. I haven't read the entire manual that came with it, because the print is awfully small (ahem), but I got my weekly email today, with tidbits of highlights from last weeks activities and interestingly, it said I gained 58 pounds. LMAO, that can't be true or none of my clothes or dresses would fit. :jester:

Anybody else get strange analytical details like this too?

*skkkkkk, skkkkkk*

Hope to get more steps in this week. Most likely it will be on Saturday though. That's housecleaning day, grocery shopping day and I've got a couple of errands to run besides the weekend stuff I've got planned.

I took off my fitbit this week too. This is my week off the good anti-inflammatories and on Advil alone. (My doctor lets me take a high-powered anti-inflammatory, but only every other week. Too much of it is bad for my kidneys.) So on the weeks I'm on Advil, I don't do much of anything that I don't absolutely have to, so there's not much point in wearing the fitbit.

Just a drive by tonight: Today's step count (because OMG, my day was SOOOO bizzay) was 11, 329. I'm sure tired tonight.

I'm on a mission tonight with after hours 'chores' I have to get done, but it's a case of too much stuff that is "Have To Do Now" kind of stuff. Deadlines, they're never fun, unless you can ace the deadline in fashion. ;)

Say, nhplowboi, that cord stacking was a muscle burner, for sure. Back in the day, when I was younger, our family cut cords of wood from timber tracts on land owned by family relatives. That is a real humdinger of an exercise activity. It really is. The guys in our family would saw up the timber and do all the chopping; but us girls would haul it over to the wood pile and stack it all up in what looked like a covered, open-air garage type structure. Oh, those were the days. Yes they were. :balloon:

Happy Wednesday Evening to all the exercisers, tonight.

Cheers,

Nada today but yesterday 5000 steps. Just the need to walk at work!

I'm on my third course of six day steroids (Prednisone), and it has been a little over a month of being sick. When I last saw my ENT this week, he suggested I not work out until I'm well. I've been following his advice but it's really hard. I feel so defeated. I'm hoping that I get a lot of rest this 3 day weekend, and that next week I can go to work feeling better. It's been a really tough time for me.

7164 steps so far today. Tomorrow will likely be more even though it'll be a half day at work because of the snow followed by rain, which will make for some slushy shoveling. Blech. But it needs to be done.

nyc, you gotta find a way to ease your Jonesin' for the gym but not stress your system either. There's a type of yoga in which the positions are held for 5-6 minutes each, allowing you to really get deep in the stretch. I'm not sure what it's called but maybe something like that would help?

I agree with your doc about the gym and working out too hard. For me, if I'm trying to get over something, the gym's the worst place to be because I wind up with new germs on top of the old ones I was fighting.

I only wore my Fitbit for a few hours today, but according to my weekly steps count, I walked approximately 43,504 steps. I had an early morning doctor appt to see my primary doctor today. I showed her the data from my Fitbit. She now has tangible proof that she was wrong in her notions about thinking I was not getting enough exercise. LOL, the look on her face was priceless.

I went to see her today because for the past year, I have had something on the edge of my thumb, that at first we all thought was a wart of some kind. After a year of cryotherapy, my doctor decided that they were just barking up the wrong tree. Apparently it is a corn. Why it's on the non-friction side of my thumb is anyone's guess, but I had to point out to the doctor that her theory of why she thought my cane and walking poles created the corn was just a bunch of bunk. That part of my thumb has not contact whatsoever with my cane or the walking poles or the roller walker I have used for the past few years (3). I even showed her, right there in her office, how I use the cane, just so she could internalize the image in her mind. All she could say was that it was 'curious' how I got a corn on the non-contact side of my thumb.

Again, the look on her face was priceless.

So I dunno, this thing about doctors. I have my own ideas about how they arrive at x, y or z answers.

I wish I could wave a wand over everyone who isn't feeling well and somehow make them feel better. Sometimes we just have to let our bodies cycle through whatever it is that is impeding our overall feelings of wellness, I guess.

Is anyone interested in my idea that all of working America should adopt a new work schedule of working only three weeks per month, then having an entire 4th week off for holiday purposes (yanno, to recover monthly from being overworked the other three weeks); then reserving one entire month of the year for the official vacation (all expenses paid)???

Let me know if we can somehow reshape working America in a more better equipped workforce with my new idea on how to get there with the work three weeks, one week off; then the annual one month off, for vacation.

Happy Weekend Woo-Woo to all,

Today I got 5000 at work on my iphone. My fitbit has not been working for quite awhile now. Perhaps one day, like in the past, it will come back to life. How annoying... On top of my fitbit having fallen apart, so have I. I got sick mid-December and I am still not all better. My cough has improved somewhat but I'm so exhausted, and work makes it so that it's hard to find that time needed to get better. I've not been going to the gym, as per the advice of my ENT. I'm in that mode of... surviving. Better times to come as the weather warms...:praying:

Today is was nearly 55 degrees, but the skies looked like a late August afternoon, with clouds gently moving in (more rain is on the way, I think).

I only walked at a minimum today (it's Saturday :) ), but I had my bi-weekly therapy appt, laundry tasks, and stuff to do at home, so I've only logged about 5+K, today.

Step highlights from this past week:

--Friday: 11,042
-Thursday: 9,119
--Wednesday: 10,659
-Tuesday: 9,040
--Monday: 9,405

Tomorrow is Sunday, and I plan to just hang out at home and rest up, since my body hurts from all the steps I get in daily. I've got some tests to study for and plan to prep lunches for the week, but that's about all I plan to do on Sunday.

I know I need to focus on staying hydrated. It seems like I carry water with me, no matter where I go, just so I can sip on water through out the day.

Next weekend I'm going swimming (Pool Therapy). I'm looking forward to that, for sure.

How is everyone else doing, lately?

You feeling any better, nycfem?

This is weird and more like an inverted step count/non-exercise post.

Just thought I would share what I am discovering to be a different use of step counting. Just short of a week ago I messed up my knee quite badly, minor injury followed up by a ton of overuse due to me trying to “walk it off“. Suffice to say I learned my lesson. I have not been paying attention to my steps for the last several days because I pretty much haven’t been taking any, had to clump around the house on an old-school walker to get anywhere. Yesterday I could finally put weight on my leg and get around a little bit. I was very happy to be mobile again and had things that needed to be done but was mindful to take it easy. Apparently not so much, I guess I was a little ambitious and since I’m sitting around again today I looked at my step count for the last week this morning and was able to see what I did. The upshot is that now I am inverting my step count by watching the number and trying to keep it low instead of going up. A strange but effective way for me to protect myself from myself. :cheesy:

Everybody else keep it up, don’t hurt yourself, and I will get back in the swing when I can reasonably do so.

I haven't been in the gym in a loooong time and I really should get there but today....today was a workout. I helped a customer/friend load 600 cubic feet worth of stuff into a 245 cubic foot van.

Yes, it involved her tossing some stuff but not a lot. We repackaged a bunch of things too. She, myself and my coworker just played a damn good game of Tetris.

I've logged 4112 steps so far today but since it doesn't log side to side movements and general rocking, it doesn't tell the whole story.

I sure do wish there was more time in a day.

I didn't log too many steps today. But I've been doing lots of other things, as well.

This past week I managed to log at least 8K steps a day or better.

I just want to be careful because of all the pressure and stress I am under, right now. The last thing I need is to come down sick. Which that might happen anyways due to all the rain we've been getting and because all the trees are blooming, which means allergies will sky rocket up and well, there it is. I sometimes feel it is not a winning situation, but ….

I'm just staying moderately active and calling it good
(because that's just the way it is, right now).

Happy Saturday, everybody. :balloon:

I was telling a friend today about the phenomenon I have noticed that the Fitbit doesn't log steps when I'm using my rollator. He said he has also noticed that it doesn't log steps when you're pushing a cart in the grocery store - so now, he pushes his grocery cart one-handed (because he just has to log those extra 300 steps).

We're talking about a guy who logs 16K - 20K steps a day. (How, you ask? He walks to work, which is on a large university campus, and then he has to walk all over the campus all day.)

Since this post is really supposed to be about _my_ exercise experience today, I didn't go outside today because when I woke up it was snowing. It sure was pretty, though. Anyway, I made lots of trips up and down the stairs today, many more than usual, because I got some packages from Amazon, all of which had to go upstairs, and I changed out all of my bedding for new bedding, and all of the old bedding had to be taken downstairs. (Honestly, I rolled most of it up in garbage bags and threw it down the stairs.)

I have been sick for 2 months and finally it went away about 3 days ago! Health has been visited upon me! I am so relieved and grateful that this awful winter virus is gone! I get sick for so long, and this was the longest ever! It's so good to be back to myself. :praying:

I went back to the gym today, and it was totally amazing! I loved every moment of it. Being able to breathe normally again! I did 35 minutes on the stairmaster with the following pattern:

Levels 3,2,1 x 2 minutes each level until I hit 30 minutes. For level 3, hands on the rail. For level 2 hands on the upper side bar. For level 1 hands on the center heart monitor.

Then I did a 5 minute Level 1 cooldown.

My heart rate was in the 150s at the beginning and then settled in the 160s.

Then I did 25 minutes on the weight floor: weights, stretching, ab exercises.

Such bliss!

I ran into 80-something year old Miriam. She's seeing a trainer named Steven. She said, "I wish I could marry him. He's so hot!" Gotta love her!

I chatted before work out in the locker room with my friend who doesn't share much that's personal, Iris. Then we worked out side by side on the stairmasters. Then we changed back into regular clothes together. We didn't plan any of it. Life just had us on the same path. She's a Latina, very pretty middle-aged woman, as in verrrrryyyyy pretttttyyyyyy.

I am so happy to be feeling myself again. Those two months of illness were the pits!

Hugs, y'all!

I’m still on the bench, after 2 1/2 weeks I finally broke down and went to see my DO yesterday, she did a thoroughly uncomfortable exam of my knee and then sent me for x-rays I’ll know more in a couple days. She says it’s probably either torn cartilage or, I’m getting old (Osteoarthritis) and need to learn moderation.

At least I’ve had a few of these days be warm enough to sit out on the patio for the afternoon and get my fresh air that way.

Levels 3,2,1 x 2 min. each level x 1 set

5 minute cool down

Heart rate 150s / 160s

Then 25 minutes on the weight floor: kettle balls, yoga, stretching

Also walked 6K steps, mainly at work.

Saw Miriam today, my 80 year old pal. We talked about the documentary being done about her and I reminded her to let me know when it comes out. She said, "If it takes much longer, I'll have to text you from my coffin to let you know." She always jokes about how it won't come out until after she's deceased!

Saw Iris today, my friend who doesn't share much personal information. She grabbed my wrist and half-whispered something to me. I can't even recall what she said! I remember it wasn't interesting, because her level of personal is not really actually that personal! Hmmm... I wish I could remember.

Saw Hillary today: "I went on a vacation skiing but it wasn't a leisure vacation. One day I burned 2400 calories." Okaaaayyyy, Hillary. Hillary has stared teaching swim lessons at the gym. Nice to see a very fit, kinda chubby gal teaching swim.

See y'all latah!

I have yet to make use of my swim pass at the neighborhood rec center, but I have been averaging about 7K steps (or better) a day at work. A few times I got over 10K steps, but I have no idea how I did that since each day is almost the same routine. Maybe it's because I slipped off to shop on a lunch break, or something.

Tomorrow is Tax day, for me, and laundry day. I will get *some* walking in, but most likely it will be less than 5K steps. If that.

Sunday? It's study day, rest in my biggo leather chair day or rest in bed day. Mostly study and absorb all the stuff I need to know so I can pass my test in a couple weeks.

Maybe by the end of March my terrible "Get It Done Now" list will be under control and I can go for an afternoon swim at the rec center.

Hope every one has a nice weekend ahead and that spring comes real soon. I saw Japanese Cherry Blossoms on a few trees on my way to work, so that means that the water-front will be full of blooms real soon. One day this past week, I saw the ladies team rowing dragon boats on the river. They're probably getting ready for Dragon Boat racing, later this spring.

Heart rate: 150s and 160s.

Then I did 25 minutes on the weight floor (stretching, weights, abs, legs).

It was a quiet Saturday night at the gym, filled with regulars.

Taylor and I arrived at the gym at the same time. She said, "I have no problem being at the gym on a Saturday night. I'll spend the evening having sex with the elliptical." Very Taylor.

She told me that she had a few blackouts but that usually she just has one glass of wine at night with her one meal. Hmmm... where did the blackouts come from? In any case, she said that she's trying to give up alcohol with the help of a doctor but finding it hard, as in- she can't. She said, "It's like you and food." Thanks, Taylor :eatinghersheybar:

I also spoke with Gayle. I told her I'd been away because I'd been sick for 2 months. She was concerned and gave me the information for her ENT. I have an ENT but maybe I will try hers. These long illnesses I get are a problem. I appreciated her concern. She said, "That's not normal." It's nice when someone cares enough to give ideas for help. On that note, Taylor told me I should have my vents cleaned but when I got home and asked BB about it, hy told me we don't really have vents- just an air conditioner in each room.

I saw Judith but didn't really talk to her. Gayle was in the vicinity, and I was embarrassed for her to have to hear me tell my 2 month illness story again to explain why I was away. So it was quite anti-climactic, just a simple hello to one another.

I am just happy I feel well. Every breath is a joy.

If you don't have vents to circulate the air, all the pollen, dust (which is, in part, mite waste and carcasses), cat dander and human skin flakes is just settling in the apartment and could be what is irritating your sinuses so bad. Maybe get an air purifier?

My return vents aren't the best so even if I switch the filters often, I can really feel it when it is worsening and stuff is hanging around in the air.

Yesterday was great. I got a TON of walking in during the day at work and afterwards when I moved stuff around the house. I wound up breaking up a desk and putting it in the dumpster too. 12,187 steps by day's end and boy, were my dogs barking!

Omg, that is awesome Gemme. Wow, you had a big day of steps!

I am going to look into changing out the air filter on my air conditioning unit because I think Gemme is on to something important about dust and other micro bits of yucky stuff in the air. I've noticed that I have to dust often at home. Why, I have no idea because I have more hard wood floors than I have space covered in tapestry-like carpet. I vacuum the carpeted area often, because I know dust and stuff hides in carpeted areas. But how the dust and stuff gets inside my studio apartment I have no idea. But... I do need to replace the air filter on my air conditioning unit and maybe this will help filter out some of the un-seen elements residing inside my cozy home. I definitely want to look into an air purifier too. Thanks for your helpful tips, Gemme. I definitely want to look into getting an air purifier too, if I can find one that meets my needs at home.

Today is Slug-Muffin Sunday, where I kind of get some exercise in (steps, house cleaning, wandering around the neighborhood).
My step count is less that 3K, right now. Maybe I will get up to 5K by end of day.

In other news, though: I did get a big important "To-Do" list element crossed off my list by high noon (Pacific Coast Time). Getting this done today is significant progress for me because I suffer paralyzing effects when it comes down to "Get It Done" type of scenarios, these days. I have no idea why I procrastinate on serious stuff that needs to be done in timely ways, but thank heavens I snapped out of it and got it done today. Go me, right? *lol*

<<<<~~~ Huzzah! :cheerleader:

Now I can relax the rest of today and possibly go on a browsing errand (no shopping until March or April or maybe even May, but by May, most certainly). :canadian:

I thought of you today! I was reading through some hacks and found one for riding bikes during winter. They suggested putting rows of zip ties around the tires to increase traction on snow and slush. Not sure if you've already done something like that, but I know you sometimes ride when it's less than ideal so maybe it could help a bit?

Today was good. 7234 steps so far. I made my goal but still feel a wee bit lazy today. I think it's all the rain.

The picture I saw had about twenty small zip ties around each tire with them cut close close to the lock so they didn't stick out. If you try it, I hope it works!

8883 steps today! I'm taking tomorrow off of work to paint a bunch of small furniture items. It's going to be fun!

I coasted past 9K steps today.

Which I probably won't get too many more days like this next week. Starting tomorrow and all through the weekend up until next Thursday, I am delving into my studies so I can pass that test next Friday. If I pass it, it will be a major achievement and lead to a much more comfortable existence (in the long run). *fingers crossed*

I had over 8000 steps logged on my phone. My phone actually counts steps. It doesnt count movement if I'm sitting, texting or playing games😲

My friend recently got a fit bit and I was helping her with the set up over lunch yesterday. She was clocking steps as we sat there eating?? Hmmm?? Upon some research, I found that the fit bit actually adds up with arm movements. Which reminded me of another person I knew, that used to just wave their arm in the air to acquire steps..lol. The step counts help with the company health discount benefits.

I was puzzled when we compared steps throughout the rest of the day.. I wonder if my walking gait had anything to do with hers? We covered the same area, yet she had more. It was her arm movements..lol

Mary's sister is an health enthusiast and she too realized that by just waving her arms it effected her count as well!

For some reason it tickles my funny bone to think how high someone, who talks with their hands, count would be or at least appear to be....:giggle:

Time to catch up on my exercise posts!

I exercised 1 hour a day at the gym each day for my whole week off this week, Sunday, Feb 16th through and including today, Saturday, Feb 22nd. I can't say I'm doing well with my paperwork I wanted to get done for work, but at least there is some mighty good times at the gym.

Every day I did 30 or 35 minutes on the stairmaster Levels 1-3, 2 minutes each level, with "1"s for cool down, and then the rest of the time on the weight floor doing weights, stretching, abs, etc. My HR was 140s through 160s.

Since I was able to go at off hours, I got my favorite stairmaster every time, and the heart rate monitor is even working on it!

Wow, being off work sure makes life easy but I go back on Monday. I've been able to sleep in and cook and go to the gym. I think good sleep is so vital for intense exercise. And I haven't mastered that for the work weeks. I must keep trying.

While not at work and the weather so cold and my fitbit not working, I've gotten very few steps.

I am still enjoying having my health back.

I had a tremendously busy day at work today and I just took my fitbit off and it says I logged 9,221 steps. I think I'm coming to a turning point on my ability to walk better than I was with my cane. I've been busy with going to special appt's with a PT team at my regular clinic and I'm making progress. I still have lots of progress in the future, but I know that what happened to me has marked my life in ways that leaves me with mixed feelings.

But I'm glad I can walk, even if I can't run or jog or sprint or whatever. I can swim the backstroke and do water yoga type exercise and little by little I am building up my ability to ride my bike for short intervals of time.

Tired, happy, content, and still working toward making progress.

One day at a time.

Today I swept two of the three outside flights of stairs. It was more of a workout than it sounds like because the steps are cement with groves the length of them which makes it difficult to get the dirt out no matter which way you sweep. Plus they were really dusty as we've been having a lot of wind storms. We're out in the sticks with many bare lots for sale, where a lot of sold homes are new/newer without well established lawns yet. Also around the development there are vineyards and large tracks of farmland, bare now in the winter so lots of dirt gets blown around.

Sitting, texting and playing games doesn't have any health benefits, so that's why it's not counted.

Yes. A person with long legs can cover more ground than someone with shorter legs. I have a very short gait and often take 2 and 3 steps for one of someone else's.

For a visual, think of two dogs running side by side: a Dachshund and a Doberman. Think of how fast those little hot dog legs are moving to keep up with the Dobie. That's me with most of the people I know. On the bright side, my step count usually is pretty high.

Today was a big day of steps for me. After I finally got settled, after getting home from work and feeding Petunia and getting my salsa prepped to sit and meld in a bowl over the weekend, my fitbit went bezerk (!) and buzzed my wrist to tell me that I walked over 11K steps. But as soon as it did that, it flipped to a new day and it annoys me because I somehow bumped a setting on my Fitbit and it's not even midnight yet, but it's on a new day now, lol (or not). << wry smile>>

I probably won't get much steps in tomorrow, since today was a big day; but I do have my therapy appt tomorrow and I have a couple of errands too.

It feels good when I have days where I have a high step count.

I'm hoping to figure out how to reset the clock on my Fitbit, so I can get the right time on it again.

I went late afternoon to the gym. I did 35 minutes on the stairmaster (Level's 3,2,1 x 2 min each level x 5 sets, then level 1s, HR 140s to 170), then I did 25 min on the weight floor stretching and doing weights and such.

I met a woman in her twenties in the locker room named Kayla. She had just quit her day job because she was now able to focus full time on her start-up. I guess if I see her again I will have to ask what her start-up is.

My step count remains about the same during the week except for the days I get more than 10K.

I'm learning to get different types of exercise in, lately. Like the group dance class exercise I participated in today and a yoga stretch session on the floor at home or going, soon if possible, for a swim at the community center in my neighborhood.

Now that I'm stuck at home due to COVID-19, including working from home, I am worried about not getting in even my small amount of 800 steps. I'm going to start walking to the end of my driveway and back - a little embarrassing as the neighbors have never seen me walk with my rollator - but what the heck, who cares? But today it's raining, and it's supposed to rain for the next few days. I used to do some walking in place/calisthenics (usually to blasting NIN or some industrial or grunge thing - I no longer even have a stereo capable of "blasting".) I guess I will try that again. At least I don't go anywhere when I do that (since it's all in place), so I don't have to come back from anywhere!

It was so gorgeous here today. Sunshine, balmy weather, it felt great being outside all day today. I got about 8500 steps in, at work.

I actually got a call back from the doctor's office and they realized that I *HAVE TO* have that A-1c blood panel workup done, so they got me into a remote testing site, tomorrow morning, for my fasting labs. The doctor will call me next week by phone to conduct our office visit.

All this past week, except for today, I logged 10K to 13K steps, but I've never made it to 15K. Today I was just plum tired. So I think getting 8500 was okay.

If I am furloughed to time off from work next week, I'm just going to work up the courage to see if I can ride my bicycle for longer periods of time. Because if I can do that, then I will venture out for a short, but kinda long bike ride to the store, which is about a 3 mile ride to get to the store. 6 miles, altogether. I don't know if I can do it, but I'm gonna try it (soon).

. . . I'm going to start walking to the end of my driveway and back . . .

So I went outside just to get in my car and drive to the pharmacy yesterday, and I felt like my lungs were going to collapse! I had to go inside and lie down! The pollen count here right now is something else (it has something to do with how much it rained last week and then all of a sudden got sunny). So I don't think I'll be walking down my driveway. :(

Today, since there is hardly anybody on the roads in our neighborhood, I decided to go for what is my second time, riding my bicycle. It's just a simple Huffy women's bicycle, no bells or whistles, no braking system other than using the bicycle pedals. I made sure the air in the tires were just right, then I put on my bicycle helmet, riding gloves and turned on the lights (front and brake light system). I rode for about 40 some-odd minutes. About 4.3 miles. Sometimes, I had to get off the bike and walk my bike up long grades on hills nearby. But, the few drivers who went by? They slowed down and smiled at me and gave me the 'thumbs up' sign... :cheesy:

I'm sitting in my big momma's chair right now, and rehydrating after my ride. Two quarts down, one more to go (soonly).

My hips hurt the worst, and my glutes (thighs) are burning and shakey.

But it felt so great to breathe in the fresh air.

Now, next time I work up courage to go for a ride, I will stick to my 4.3 mile route until I can bicycle it without getting off and walking my bike up hills.

The downside to all of this is that when people return to work and traffic begins to rise, I don't know if I will be so willing to do it, unless it's on the weekend (less traffic). I wish there were bicycle lanes that helped me get to other parts of our metro area that definitely have inner-city lanes for cyclists. If there was? I'd ride every day, and save only my car for trips to the washeteria and grocery shopping and the doctor's office.

That's my 'good news' today, that I created my first milestone of achievement in being able to ride my bike for longer than 20 minutes in our gigantic parking lot, lol.

Cheers to everyone.

FINALLY!!

My beach access opened a few days ago and today I decided to test it out and see how things were. Perfect weather, low tide (so the beach is wide), and 2 1/2 months of pent-up anticipation.

It couldn’t possibly have been better. People were being really great and distancing out something like 20 feet for the most part. Lifeguards were making sure that nobody had any blankets or chairs and people did keep moving. All of the new signage and cordoned off access and exit areas were very clear that it is for now an exercise only Beach. Fine with me! It felt completely safe, most folks had a mask although almost none were wearing it because of the distancing and it felt great to just breathe the salt air.

I got to walk in the sand barefoot and wiggle my toes in the cold water, nothing like not having something for a while to make you appreciate it all the more. Just before the shut down I hurt my knee pretty badly and have not been able to go to physical therapy for it. I’ve been making up my own routine and while it is weak, it worked. I was good and didn’t push it too hard but as of now at dinner time I have 9960 steps. I am confident that I will make 10 K by bedtime.

I start PT tomorrow and we'll see how that goes. I had about 60 steps today - three times to the bathroom and back to bed. I have high hopes of improving this quickly. I did start doing some ankle circles today that my doctor recommended to prevent blood clots.

My car is visiting the mechanic's garage, so I've been getting more exercise lately. Yesterday, because I missed the last bus home and because bus schedules run on weekend schedules, I walked about 5 extra miles on top of the 14821 steps I managed to log while spending the day at a nature type park. While at the park, listening to the river and watching kayakers practice on small rapids, a big beautiful Blue Heron swooped down from the tree canopy and wow, you couldn't even hear them swoosh through the air. I spilled my strawberry concoction I took to drink, trying to take a picture of it because it was SO huge, and majestic, and just so mysterious. I've never seen a Blue Heron as big as the one I saw yesterday.

I am not sure what I will do this summer, when it comes to my favorite activity: Swimming (or rather, floating while cloud watching). Even our own pools here at home are closed. Public pools are closed until further notice. So I'm glad I never made it over to the community center to buy a summer swim pass. But by late summer, there is a couple of opportunities to go to hot springs resorts, and maybe then, I'll get my pleasures by floating in a hot spring pool. Maybe.

Last week I managed to log all sorts of steps. I even managed to fall down my stairs and bang up both knees and hit my head and bruised my left side by my ribs. I'm glad I had a winter ski hat on and was bundled up, because it could have been entirely different. I'm glad I didn't break any bones. But my body is super sore, especially since I had to walk home after no buses were ever going to be able to take me home.

Here's to more Blue Heron's, floating in a pool - sometime this summer, and to my car being healed, so she's not having to visit the mechanics garage so often.

Oh, and as soon as the Rain season ends, I have plans to bicycle to work. I have finally mapped a route to work and it will take about 1.5 hours to do it, but I plan to start out with biking to work, one or two days a week, until I can do it daily, five days a week (that might be next summer).

I am both creeped out and offended on your behalf.

I tend not to engage with people like that, but honestly, that usually just makes them angry. It takes me less energy to ignore people than to engage, though. When I used to ride the subway daily, these two little old ladies tried to make it really hard on me. They were always standing in the same place in the parking lot, and once they caught on that I would _not_ speak to them, no matter what they said, everyday they got their noses all up in the air and said things to other people walking by like, "She's so rude! Can you believe how rude she is?" They had a very self-involved perspective. LMAO!

Oh, and for thread compliance, I walked from the bathroom door to the end of my bed 10 times today! And I did my PT in bed. I am trying to take it easy on my feet, because about four days ago my gout worsened when I got too excited and did too much walking around.

The other day I logged 18K+ steps.
Today it was only 11K+ steps.

I may have bicycled a bit too, last weekend; and I plan to bicycle again this weekend too. It's the usual 13 mile loop I like to ride. It takes me a spell to do it because there are a couple three terribly steep hills and I have to walk my bicycle up the hill, every time. In some cases, as I return toward home, I actually don't have the usual braking system. The pedal brakes are all it has, so I do the sane thing and get off the bike and walk it down the hills.

Being tied up in a hospital is something I intend to never have occasion to do, so: Safety First <<<<---- that's my motto. LOL. :canadian:

I do dream of having my own swimming pool, one day. Yep, yep.

I want to keep the social distancing thing going where it concerns swimming, too. :tease:

Wow, I have not exercised since 2/29/20. And today is 7/1/20. Incredible.

Being in NYC which is the epicenter of the pandemic in case you didn't get the memo, I have been completely inside since March, save for one brief walk, until today. Today I got my exercise groove on! And groove I did. I walked 13K steps, a bit over two hours. And I did 35 minutes of outdoor yoga, weightlifting, ab exercises, etc.

It was great. It felt like my brain was finally oxygenated. I've been busy literally almost every waking hour from mid-March through the end of June doing remote school social work. My principal worked me to the bone. Today is my first day of school being out!

I did everything in Riverside Park. I brought something to put down on the grass and weights. Instead of the gym ceiling, I stared at clouds and blue sky, and the moon, and fire flies, and planes overhead. I did it!

On Friday we are going on vacation, driving to a beach house for a week (the queer / lesbian part of Fire Island: Cherry Grove). When we go, I will adapt to the beach, and for Thursday and probably Friday morning, I'll use the park.

I missed the AC at the gym but I sure did enjoy being out in nature, especially after being inside all this time.

Good for you, girly! I'm in a similar boat in terms of enjoyable exercise or chosen exercise might be a better description since I don't really like to sweat at all but it's necessary. I've been physical at work. Many days quite a bit but it hasn't done anything for me emotionally or psychologically like a good chosen workout does.

My gym is appointment only now, of course, and because the gym suspended payments for everyone for those months, I can't get an appointment until my next monthly charge.

When I want to workout, I can't do it the way I want, and when I don't want to, there is a plethora of options. I'm pretty sure Murphy controls my life.

Enjoy your vacation!

I walked 10K in Riverside Park tonight. It's very populated where I walk which is nice for evening walking, and lit.

My favorite part of walking when it is hot and humid is getting back home and having cold water.

Went on a four hour walk in the neighborhood (11K steps so far), while listening to a looped version of Madcon's "Don't Worry Bout a Thing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ32WlI-KSc)" and took some pictures of the beautiful flowers I saw on my walk out in nature today.

Going for a long bicycle journey tomorrow (got my day pack packed already).

I might get a few more steps in today before sundown.

I've been continuing my goal of 10K per day of walking (using my iphone to count). My last post was on 7/2/20. So here's my catching up information:

7/3, 7/4: 10K
7/5: 11K
7/6: 12K
7/7, 7/8, 7/9, 7/10: 10K
7/11: 12K
7/12: 13K

I was at the beach on Fire Island for a week, so I walked on the sand barefoot during that time, and also barefoot on the wooden paths. I think I set off an old injury in my left foot (a fracture of the sesamoid bone). It's been acting up lately. It could be just from all the walking but was probably from walking so much barefoot on the wooden paths. It felt good at the time but probably was too much. The sesamoid bone is what pushes down against the ground if you are wearing a high heeled shoe. When I originally injured this bone 20 years ago, I used to wear high heels a lot and lived in a 4th floor walk-up apt and the pressure likely built up. My foot doctor told me at that time that some women refused to stop wearing high heels every day and so he would give them expensive injections regularly to plump up that part of the foot. Crazy. Anyway, I think I may at least go to a shoe store and get some new shoes. I haven't been in any store in NYC since before the pandemic. I will wear a high quality mask and glasses.

I have been walking at a slow pace, generally walking 5 miles in 2.5 hours (2mph). I walk in the park on shaded paths and then on the way home I walk by the river which gives a little bit of a breeze. I take a lot of photos.

I wonder if my bone was affected by walking on the sand. I walked on the packed sand by the water (and again - this was walking for several hours). Maybe I should wear shoes if I'm doing my walk on the beach?

Editing for clarity: I myself rarely wear high heels since that injury 20 years ago.

I just got my car back, but during the past two weeks I walked a whole bunch of steps. My lower back did not like it much at all, but I did walk quite a bit and I may have even lost a few pounds.

July 5th - 11th: 58,332 steps (best days: Mon-Thurs; 3 days over 13K steps)
June 28th - July 4th: 55,556 steps (best days: Mon-Fri; 2 dys over 12K steps)

There were a couple days I did not wear my FitBit. Today I only logged about 8K steps, but I will try to walk a bit more before bedtime and try to get 9K steps or 10K steps for today.

I have a suggestion for shoes, nycfem: A couple years ago, back when I was still with the Physical Therapy team? One of the therapists made a recommendation to me and I went to a nearby specialty shoe store. I bought a few shoes made by a New Zealand shoe company: Ziera (https://zierashoes.com/nz/about-us/).

I really like the several pairs of Ziera shoes I bought: I bought two pairs of Gummibear shoes (in Red Rouge and Navy Blue) and a pair of dressy Mary Jane dress shoes, which are super cute, all of them. They are SO comfy. I spent a lot of money on those three pairs of Ziera shoes, but they are absolutely worth the money you invest to make sure your feet love you for a pair of wonderful shoes.

Here is a page (https://shoemill.com/collections/ziera) I found online which shows examples of Ziera shoes. They have many styles, to choose from. Check out the Ziera link I first listed, so you can read about how this shoe company started. Their shoes are orthotic friendly, and engineered and designed by doctors who specialize in foot care (podiatry).

Thanks for sharing about being able to get outdoors for a bit. I know it must have felt so good.

Oh, you mentioned wearing a high quality mask and glasses. I bought a pair of shaded safety glasses, which wrap around my regular optical glasses. I bought mine at an Optical store, a couple years ago. Those are a bit spendy too, but the wrap-around effect to block light and other things from touching your eyes is worth the investment (I think).

Today I walked 10K to the shoe store and back and through the park. It was the first time I was in a store since the pandemic. I bought Saucony brand shoes (Hurricane 22). I bought 2 pairs of the store's brand of socks because I always wear double socks. I wore my new shoes and socks home. When I got home my decades old foot injury (left foot sesamoid fracture) was really bothering me, perhaps more so than ever. Ugh, I can't tell you how upsetting this is to me. I think this means I MUST take a break from my walks because... what if I fracture it again? I'm so frustrated because I was really loving my 10K per day walks. It's not like I can switch over to swimming or something different because of the pandemic. My walks were getting me outside and so mentally and physically healing after four months of being inside. Maybe I should truly rest my feet for a week. And then on August 9th BB and I go to the beach again for a week, so does that mean I shouldn't do my 10K on the sand by the water- which I love? I hate dealing with injury, but I know I need to watch it because I've never had this original injury act up the way it has been in 20 years. It sucks not having the gym where I could have been mixing my exercise up so as not to be putting such repetitive pressure on my feet. Feel free to offer suggestions. I will definitely try to only wear Thorlos socks which are great for feet. Wearing the store brand socks could not have helped. Maybe I could give it a few days rest and then just walk to the park with my weights and do yoga and ground exercises. I really have to get creative. Thanks for the opportunity to vent.

That is so frustrating. Have you thought about seeing if your primary doctor can refer you to a orthopedic physician, so they could get xray pics of your foot? And to see what can be done about it? I think it is wise to back off on your walking until you find out what exactly is causing your foot pain. Limit stressors occuring with your foot until doctors can treat your specific foot issue?

Im so sorry to hear this is causing you troubles. I hope you find out soon the exact problem with your foot that is experiencing pain. :rrose:

My guess, barefoot with hard surfaces. Think about how many little muscles and bones are in our feet and what we ask them to do. I do a lot of barefoot walking but after any real time off of barefooting (a couple of months) I always work my way back into it increasing slowly over time so that all the mechanics get adjusted to not being braced by footwear. If you are barefoot around the house alot this might not apply, but if you are used to cushioned surfaces with structural support (shoes)and going straight to multiple days of 10k+ I would bet on it. Buying new shoes might not work right away because they are unfamiliar too. I would try regular or light routine with normal footwear for a few days and then start taking shoes of for shorter periods at the end of the day when your feet are already tired to judge it.

Just my totally uneducated but used to hurting myself guess! I hope it feels better soon, in the mean time I would take shoes to the beach to have for part time and barefoot part time when it feels okay. Depending on how coarse or fine the sand is it can be a really hard surface when wet..

I have been getting back out pretty regularly myself. I finally decided that it was worth the risk to get some PT for my knee, it was hampering my life too much. The PT I saw briefly a few months ago was standard issue pointless as provided by insurance, the kind where you see them for 5 minutes before being turned over to an intern watching 5 people. Went twice and saw that going nowhere.

A couple of weeks ago I signed on with a very good holistic PT and started twice a week 1 hour one on one work. Private room, all sanitized for each person, masks etc. I am making great progress and wish I had started this sooner, better now than not though. The pain is gone but for an occasional reminder when I am on very uneven ground, we are working on soft tissue manipulation in session and then I have work to do on the other days around posture and gait, no actual specific knee exercises but more on focusing on stabilizing muscle throughout my body. I don't have arthritis (what the Dr said) but have hyperextended it badly and had habits that kept exacerbating things. I am walking at the beach on sand 3 miles at a time barefoot 4 days a week virtually pain free. Hallelujah!

Shortly after my post my foot stopped hurting :praying:. Then today it did not bother me at all. So I think my extensive barefoot beach walking, particularly on the wooden paths combined with wearing new shoes and new socks is what did me in. I went back to my old shoes (old model asics shoes) and old socks (double Thorlos socks) and walked 5K today with no problems :goodluck:. Whew, what a relief! I think my new shoe and new sock purchase were poor choices, BUT at least I bought OOFOS sandals. Oh my goodness, those are a revelation. They were started by athlete who saw a need for recovery footwear to wear between work-outs. Gosh, they are like magic. I went to the grocery store today in NYC- first time in 4 months, and I paid a homeless man to carry half my bags home. We had the nicest conversation while walking. I've been wearing an N95 mask. I think I forgot to wear my glasses today. So many things to remember during the pandemic :vigil:

Walking barefoot on the beach is relaxing and romantic, but did you know it’s also good for you?

Here are some of the benefits of walking on the beach barefoot:
***You’ll get stronger
Sand provides resistance that strengthens your arches, ankles and leg muscles. Your foot will be going through its full range of motion, and every time your foot sinks into the sand, your muscles have to work extra hard to push you back up and move you forward.

***And you’ll burn more calories
In addition to the muscular benefits, the resistance that comes from walking on sand will burn more calories. So, go ahead and order that seafood dinner!

***It’s a free foot massage!
Walking barefoot on sand and taking breaks while standing in the water will massage the soles of your feet. The motion activates venous and lymphatic circulation, making your feet feel nice and relaxed.

***The sand will exfoliate your feet
No need for a fancy foot scrub. Walking on sand will exfoliate dead skin cells and make your feet feel softer.

***You’ll reduce your stress
There’s nothing more relaxing than strolling near the water and listening to the sounds of the ocean. Leave the shoes at home to symbolize leaving your cares behind.

Since I like the oofos sandals so much, I decided to buy oofos slip on gym shoes. I wore them today and could not believe how comfortable they were. Yesterday morning 3 miles of Sandy toes. The beach I’ve been using for this last month is friendly to dogs on leash and for me that adds an element of fun, especially when there are young pups out getting their first taste of beach. Yesterday I saw something new, someone had a pig on a leash walking the surfline. The pig was having an absolutely marvelous time!

So those oofos shoes that I did my 10K in yesterday did not agitate my old injury which is always my primary concern but they are clearly not good for long walks. When I woke up, my ankles were in bad shape! They went back to normal when I started walking around but as one might expect, slip on shoes are not good for a 10K walk. I really need to wear good stability shoes that also have good shock absorption. I still stand by my oofos as a good between work-out shoe to wear around the house but not for a several hour walk.

Today I wore my old tried and trusted asics (gel kay-ayono 21). Since it was not dark I was able to walk in the park instead of on the streets which helps since the ground in the park is a kinder surface for feet. I was listening to a podcast on ticks while I walked called Tick Bootcamp. Then when I got home, I washed my hair and a bug fell out. Lovely! I don't think it was a tick but it was close enough that it freaked me out! Perhaps I should always wear a cap when I walk, even when it's not sunny, since I am walking under so many trees. I killed it between my fingers because when I started to shampoo my hair it fell from my hair onto my chest and was crawling there. I did NOT want to lose sight of it! Then I wrapped it in toilet paper and yelled for BB to come in to flush it down the toilet, lest it come back to life :|.

Anyway, I walked 10K today. It's really so nice to walk at sunset by the river. The park right by me is so vast and puts me by water and within so much green. It's a treat all around except for... that bug! :rainbowAfro:

I'm glad your foot is feeling better now! Don't forget that you went from not much physical activity on your feet to a ton in a short amount of time. The barefoot walking just compounded that, I bet. I'm glad that you've gotten into a rhythm and your old injury seems to have calmed down.

My coworker had surgery in March because an injury at work (she rolled her foot on an uneven surface) aggravated a birth defect in one of her feet. She was born with one of the bones that are usually attached to something just floating around. Until the injury aggravated it, it never bothered her. They tried a boot for weeks but it got worse and then the pandemic started to darken the horizon so she decided this was the best time to be out of work for a couple of months and she was right. The hospital she had the surgery at stopped all elective surgeries 2 days after hers.

The point of the story is that a small aggravation can cause a big tadoo down the road and I'm glad that you're feeling better and you found your sweet spot again. I wouldn't count out the new shoes, though. As much as you are walking, you'll wear your Asics down even if you switch out the insoles for new gel ones. They say runners get 400-600 miles on their shoes. I tend to double that number if I'm just walking since the stress on them is far less than running so that would be 800-1200 miles of walking before looking at replacing the shoes or at the very least, changing out the insoles.

Plus, I'm a fan of Saucony because of my duck feet. I have wide toes and a narrow heel and Saucony and New Balance are really the only shoes that I can wear for exercise long term.

As a side note, did you elevate and ice your foot when it was hurting? That would have helped too.

Since I pretty much never buy shoes and I’m super picky about what I put on my feet from a comfort point of view, I’ll throw my recommendation in the ring too.

I was looking for something I could use on the trails and on the beach when the sand is too cold that would mimic as closely as possible barefoot walking. I went to one of these runner stores that has the scanning device you stand on and measures your foot 16 ways from Sunday and told them what I was looking for. What they came up with and what I bought was a pair of Altra brand shoes in the “Escalante“ model. It is a zero lift shoe with no elevation under the heel, a wide toebox for unrestricted toes, and practically no padding for surface feel. For me they are magic and I love them, they suit my needs perfectly and while less than stunning in the looks department I don’t think they stand out in anyway. You would have to look down on them from the top to see how wide the toebox is, maybe something for Gemme.

My .02

I did not have an exercise experience today because it is Sunday and the beaches will be crowded with idiots. There will be a good low tide early tomorrow morning though and I will go be with the local regulars distancing and being safe.

Today I walked 7.5K steps (so yes to steps, Kelt, not miles). I have been walking slow, just two miles per hour, very relaxing. I tried out New Balance shoes -agreed, Gemme- like them very much! Thanks for the ideas and hints, friends. And, yes, I agree, Gemme, I am definitely adjusting to exercising after having been 4 months sedentary. Today is Day 19 walking! I also added in a neck fan (charges on the computer). Geeky but pleasant on super hot days! Since I can't do the gym I'm working with what I got... which is- being outside!

My last three days of walking were:

July 20th 10K steps, 4.5 miles, New Balance shoes, size 11, concrete. My feet hurt after but not my old foot injury. Hard to know if it was from trying out New Balance or from walking on all concrete.

July 21st 11K steps, 5.1 miles, my beloved old asics gel-kayano 21 and in the park, no foot pain at all. Oh, the wish to be able to buy more of the old versions of perfect shoes. Size 10.5.

July 22nd 12K steps, 5.3 miles, Hoka shoes. Size 11- which was too large. Some pain after but manageable, walked in the park.

I feel like I am really getting in the groove of this walk routine. It has been since the beginning of July.

Oh, the wish to be able to buy more of the old versions of perfect shoes.

I have gotten lucky twice and been able to buy duplicates of perfect shoes on Amazon from independent sellers. One time I had to settle for a different color, but they were the same model. In both cases, there was only one pair for sale in my size, which leads me to think the sellers had found some closeout somewhere and bought them to resell. Both pairs were brand new in the box. It might be worth a try.

I did my PT exercises, a bit half-heartedly today. My right foot is flaring up a little, and I haven't yet decided if it makes it worse or better to exercise it, or to rest it for a day when this happens.

OK, so shoes we loved from the past got me to thinking and I remember shoes I had in high school that were all the rage, ugly as sin, and also simulated walking in sand designed by a Danish yoga teacher. I remember having to have them and so did everybody else, they were called earth shoes. Does anybody else remember these?

Anyway I decided to look them up to see if I could find an image to post and I found a throwback article about them and thought I would post it here. Earth Shoes (http://groovyhistory.com/earth-shoes-70s).

Not an exercise post, just a blast from the past!

I didn't have earth shoes, but I did have a subsequent rendition - Birkenstocks. They widened my feet and now I have to wear a wide sized shoe. They sure were comfortable, though.

My physical therapist really gave my upper body a workout today. He was all about that giant rubber band, and adding extra resistance. He added some new positions today as well, including one overhead behind-the-head reach that nearly made me fall over backward. I moved one foot off the bed (I was sitting) to stabilize myself, and he was all like, "Put your foot back! Use the muscles in your core to stay upright!"

Tonight was 10K in the park. It was one of those days where a thunderstorm kept being expected, and I was overly tired from lack of sleep the night before... and I was just so down, thinking maybe I wouldn't get my walk in. But lo and behold I did! :cigar2:

I wore my asics gel-kayano 21 size 10.5 (newer versions suck for me). Also, thanks to Georgeoma'am I checked again to find them online and I found a super cheap used pair of them on ebay (just one there!), so I bought them. They look in pretty good condition, and these shoes do eventually fall apart, so an extra pair of my Cinderella gym shoe :blueheels: is very helpful! First Georgiama'am added Gochujang to my life which revolutionized my cooking, and now she led me to an extra pair of my favorite shoes. I think I have a guardian angel :praying:

I am quite the sight on my walks: airpods, mask, utility vest with pandemic-y supplies, blue gloves, neck fan, cell phone, cap... It's a bit like being inside a bubble. The park is glorious.

I took a walk with my mom this morning. It has been so hot that exercise has been suffering. No AC at work so the thought of exercising after sitting in a swamp all day is not very appealing. But it was nice and cool out this morning so I called my mom to see if she wanted to go walk before I went to work and she did so we put on our masks and had a nice walk chat. We will do that more often.

Got out for a great beach walk this morning, when I started it was cloudy from marine layer but pleasant and not many people out. I was nearing the end of my three mile route when the sun burned through and it was absolutely gorgeous, so I tacked on another mile and made it 4 for the day.

11,722 steps (5.35 miles), is what my Fitbit shows right now.

It was a beautiful day here, today, but scorching hot weather is just around the corner (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday). Over 100 degrees on those 3 days next week.

Just got through with water sets, and it's cool with a light breeze. Very enjoyable tonight.

Pretty sunset, too.

10K steps, 4.6 miles. I walked on the streets the whole time because it was too late for the park.

I wore my Hoka gym shoes, but this time with 3 pairs of Thorlos socks, and it worked! They had been too large, but tying the laces tight and wearing triple sports socks did the trick. Actually I never quite know if shoes worked until the next day, but my feet feel pretty good for walking two hours on concrete.

It was a Friday night so people were outdoor dining. They are not always really six feet apart, and it's kinda freaky to see people sitting at tables talking without masks. Even though it's outside, it still seems a little risky to me. At the same time, it was good people watching and nice to see the city not like a ghost town. And people were not acting wild... I just wouldn't feel comfortable with it myself. I would not feel relaxed. Honestly, even with a mask, I wasn't relaxed walking by them :vigil:

Today was Day 24 of my long walks. I feel so relieved that I was able to find a way to transition from my unavailable gym to the outdoors. Exercise always makes my day :goodluck:

I spoke too soon on my Hoka shoes. I woke up this morning, and my ankles were in such pain. Once I got up and took a bath and walked around, I was okay but I think Hoka, as much hype as they get, are too platform-y and big for me. One confounding variable: my walk last night was 100% concrete instead of the park.

Today I received my ebay 2nd pair of so-hard-to-find old version asics gel kayano-21 gym shoes, size 10.5 (worn w/2 pairs of Thorlos socks, one medium cushion and one maximum cushion). Gosh, for "used" they look better than mine. This person clearly didn't walk in the woods. I would have payed so much more for these. 20 dollars, what a deal.

So I walked in the park (sunset walk) with my fave shoes on trails, so nice. It was just an amazing evening. I walked 5K steps (2.25 miles), then did half hour of "gym floor" exercises (yoga, weights, 100 five-second sit-ups, etc), then another 5K steps (2.25 miles). The weather was just beautiful, and it was so nice to see people out safely on a Saturday evening. I brought two six pound weights with me and a Bearz waterproof tarp. I set them out in the park while I walked, which was cool, because neither are really worthy of stealing, though I guess one never knows. The weights hold down the tarp which works out well. Looking up at the sky while doing stretching and ab exercises never gets old.

Our apt is only half a block from the park but ideally I don't like to go back and forth from home to use the bathroom, especially if I'm deep into the park. I found a perfect spot to pee tonight. I always need to find a place that is not so hidden that I will be mugged or bitten by a tick and not so open that I will be seen. I found a great secret place. It involves walking up an incline that is covered in burrs, like so many of them. On the way down the little hill of burrs, I was caught off guard, and the burrs functioned like walking on top of little wheels, and I slid down onto my ass. Luckily my ass is very cushioned so it was nothing more than a bit of a surprise! And the best part was that no one saw me. Next time I'll try to do a little better with not slipping on them. This story is a little TMI but it's the reality of not being in the gym.

When I get home, I always have to wash my lower legs because they are covered in a layer of dirt. The trails generate a lot of dirt, but they sure are good for the feet.

Tomorrow night I set up a zoom with BB's relatives. I felt bad because I nixed us getting together with them, even outside, for obvious reasons. I will miss getting to walk during sunset when it's not as hot, but I do have my neck fan :rainbowAfro:.

Kätzchen
07-26-2020, 10:01 AM
Your "tmi" about walking the trail with burrs reminded me of the urgent need to go pee and not close to a place where one can go pee in private.

One day, a few months ago, out on a 'mission', *lol*, I needed to do exactly that, but was not close to any place safe to go pee. In a panic, desperation set in, and luckily no one was in sight of my location, so behind a grove of trees, was the place safest to do it. I couldnt wait until i got home to take a long shower.

It is going to be terribly hot here today, so i do not have plans to get any steps in today. With things i plan to do at my stay-cation locale, I might get in about 3k-4k steps.

Better to stay inside and stay hydrated is probably the best thing i can do during this heat wave.

I am glad you are exercising alternative ways to visit your family, though. I have resisted visiting friends here at home or going to see my family because it is too huge of a health risk, right now. Texting with close friends and arranging to not be in the same place at the same time with close friends and kin (family) is the best defense right now.

Hope you have a wonderful visit with your family. :bouquet:

Hello, exercisers!

Yesterday was my high count for the week at 11,647 steps. The day before was nearly 11,000. Most work days I get between 5000-8000 steps in there. Today I am off and loafing around so I'm barely past 1,000 steps but will get a few more in before day's end. A lot of what I'm doing doesn't register on my counter and that's the side to side motion as I go through boxes and disperse things into Save, Donate, Sell or Trash.

We're in the middle of the second heat wave in about a week's time. Tomorrow could hit 99 with a heat index of several degrees more. It's hard to exercise outside like that and to work outside in that sloppy hot soup is not my idea of fun. Be safe out there to those who will brave the elements to get their groove on.

Riverside Park has an influx of raccoons. They are beautiful and fascinating but it's weird. I wonder why this has happened. It's like someone dropped off a truck full of raccoons. I take cool photos of them and we both keep a distance from each other. At one point I heard what sounded like a combination of a snort and a snarf, and it was one of the raccoons!

Today I walked 2K in the morning. My walking count, since I count with my iphone, is when I have my iphone with me. I had an annual gyn exam, and just walked around the neighborhood after. That made doing 8K in the evening somehow so much easier. I should consider that for the future.

3.9 miles barefoot sand this morning. Today I went back to my regular trio of beaches which I have been avoiding because of the steep ramp and some stairs to access, my knee felt better enough to give it a shot. It’s funny how beaches that butt right up against each other will have different bird populations, I don’t know how they sort out turf but today was mostly Willits and Long Billed Curlews, Pelicans and Terns are up at the other end.

Something I really like about this particular stretch of beach is the high mica content in the sand, when the sun hits it just right in the shallow surf edge it looks like the whole area is paved in gold glitter. :cheesy:

Your beach story makes me want to wander down to the coast to go see long time friends. They live close to the beach and have relatively no other visitors on their stretch of the beach. I want to go after Labor Day, when there wont be too many other beach goers during the latter months of fall.

My sleep has been horrendous throughout the pandemic. I struggle with sleep anyway. Sleep feels even more imperative so that I have enough energy to do my 10K steps each day. I took a nap this afternoon before my evening walk. I know naps aren't supposed to be good (so say some people), but they sometimes save me, in regard to having enough energy to do my walking. I brought my weights and a resistance band and my tarp, stored them in my favorite spot in the park, and returned to them after the walk to do a half hour of weights and yoga and abs. It felt great but the weather was pretty brutal. Let's just say a small breeze would have been nice.

I tried out another pair of used asics gel-kayano 21 shoes (which I think were the version of this shoe from 2014) that I found for cheap on the Internet. They were the men's version, so I had bought 1.5 sizes smaller. The men's version fit okay but I feel like the interior padding is not as soft. Still, not bad. My lower back and legs and knees need a break from all the walking I've been doing, lately. I only got about 7.9K steps yesterday.

So I'm going to do myself a favor and take it easy this weekend and do other restful types of activities. Maybe go for a drive to a secluded river front beach and do some bird watching or watch incoming ships sail by.

We have pearly skies today, after a long week of roasted marshmallow weather. So I'm happy it is not hot today and that a dense covering of marine clouds are protecting us from being scorched to the high-heavens.

Hope all of you have a lovely weekend ahead. :tea:

10K steps, 4.6 miles

I had to walk on the streets because it was too late for the park.

I made it into an investigative walk. 3 fancy hotels in my neighborhood are being paid by the government to temporarily house 600 homeless people in them to decrease crowding in shelters. Some people were complaining that it is leading to a bad scene in the neighborhood (a number are registered sex offenders, some in recovery said to be openly using, untreated mental illness, etc.). So I decided to visit all three hotels and see if I noticed much. I didn't. I do think there are many more homeless people with an active presence in the neighborhood. The latest hotel where people are piping mad about is only for single men recovering from drugs. There was security working there, and they were working with one man who was only partially centered in reality. I've been following the news on this whole thing. I made my visits from 9 -10 pm. And for those who don't know the vibe of NYC, it's bustling with people even late at night. Outdoor dining everywhere goes through midnight etc. So everything is well-lit.

It was interesting to add a little investigative mission to my walk :rainbowAfro:. Conclusion: For nighttime things don't seem to be too out of control.

Editing to add: The idea is to spread homeless people out in order to decrease the spread of COVID secondary to many people in close quarters. Apparently hotels are being paid by the government more than they would be by paying clientele, and these hotels are super pricey. An interesting dynamic...

I _had_ to go to the DMV yesterday. I made it, waiting in line and all, pushing my rollator. I barely made it up the stairs when I got home, though. So today I was pretty sore. My physical therapist took pity on me; after I made two circuits of the path from my bed to the top of the stairs, and did some stretches, he gave me a shoulder massage with eucalyptus and peppermint oil. Or, "soft tissue manipulation", as he called it. It was _so_ nice. It reminded me how long it has been since I had a massage.

I like how the park stays active very late. No indoor restaurants, and the park has a beautiful outdoor restaurant overlooking the river. I walked 10K, 4.4 miles. It was ultra humid and pouring rain and garbage night :|. The park isn't safe in the evening in the rain because -shocker- people don't congregate in the park when it's raining. So I had to walk the streets. I held the umbrella the whole way. I don't know how I finished but I did :goodluck:

I love Saturday nights at the park. It's a night I can stay out as late as I want because it does not ever become desolate on a Saturday night. Also everyone is having fun, and it's a good vibe! I saw someone grilling and thought of you, Kelt. Man, did that smell good!

I walked 10K steps, 4.4 miles, and did 40 minutes of weight lifting and stretching and that kind of thing.

Beautiful night of fireflies and warmth and smiles.

I am still waiting for something of mine to get stolen. I mean... it is NYC. I bring my weights to the park and resistance bands and tarp and set it all up and then leave it while I do my walk. Thus far it is right there to greet me when I finish. C'mon New York, make a little effort :vigil:

My exercise consists of PT 2 days a week and my "homework" exercises every day that I don't have PT. There are a few things I can't do at home that I do at PT.

I skipped out on my PT appointment today because I have an upset stomach. However, I did my exercises. I also swept the carport. There was not a lot to sweep because the yard guys blew it out a couple of days ago, but there was a dead frog I wanted to get rid of. It was actually quite painful - I haven't swept anything in months - but I did it!

I have some exercise catching up to do because I was on vaca at the beach in Montauk, Monday through Friday (got back today).

Sunday 8/9 - last park walk before Montauk, 10K steps plus 30 minutes yoga and weights

Monday 8/10 - beach walk at night, took some cool photos, tried walking in my shoes and HATED it. Never again! I love the feel of bare feet in sand and water. Never-the-less... 10K steps.

Tuesday 8/11- beach walk at night again. At least I had no shoes. It's pretty to see all the bonfires at night. I do not like seeing the fishing poles. Why are there fishing poles? I don't even really understand it. I don't see people holding them. Some things are beyond my knowledge base. 10K steps.

Wednesday 8/12 - beach walk during the day. Finally found my rhythm! So much better for me! It's much easier to walk in Montauk on the beach than in Fire Island. In Montauk the sand doesn't drop off right by the water and the sand is packed much tighter. I went for a great swim in the ocean too. 11K

Thursday 8/13 - I decided I'd water walk in the pool and then realized the iphone (what I use to count my steps) doesn't work in the pool. I did some googling and found that water step counting is a bit complex since the body doesn't function the same way in water. Of course, water walking is a good and healthy thing, and I wonder what the best device is for counting steps in the pool. I'd love to know! So I ended up walking on the beach during the day with another ocean swim. 12K steps.

Friday 8/14 - we got back today, and so I ended up doing a pavement night walk. I wore my new balance fresh foam shoes and they worked fine. 11K steps. I'm wondering if my original problems were due not as much to shoes as to not having walked for 4 months due to the pandemic (and then jumping into doing 10K steps a day).

I really loved walking barefoot on the beach in Montauk during the day over our vacation. There are beautiful cliffs and lots of big stones and lots of emptiness, and the swimming is great out there. It was interesting to see how much I preferred it to the beach at Fire Island. I took tons of photos of the beach while walking in Montauk. It was a really nice vacation, with lots of time in the pool and the ocean. I am a water girl for sure.

I've appreciated hearing about PT from people. I've likely shared this story but why not share it again :hamactor: . I was sent to PT in junior high due to being diagnosed with kyphosis (like scoliosis but the spine hunches over instead of to the side). I probably only went to a few PT appointments but they affected my life forever in such a good way. The PT gave me a set of exercises and told me to do them everyday for the rest of my life. Among them were:

100 pelvic tilts, knees up (count to 5 for each tilt)
100 pelvic tilts, legs flat (count to 5 for each tilt)
100 sit-ups, (Hold each sit up for a count of 5)
100 back extensions (Hold a pillow under my core while laying on my stomach, hold soup cans in my hands- cute, cheap way of replacing weights, and count to five for the duration of each extension)

It's funny how a professional simply looking you in the eye and telling you you have to do something everyday for the rest of your life can sometimes really work :vigil:

She was in her twenties and very nice and straight-forward. The exercises became very meditative, and I wish I could tell her what a positive impact she had on my life.

Nycfem, it sounds like you had a lovely beach vacation. Oh, I am jealous, not only of your walks on the beach, but that you _can_ walk on the beach. It took me a long time to figure out that, the more I weigh, the more I sink into the sand, and the harder it is to walk in the sand, until it is almost impossible.

* * *

The physical therapist wore me out today, until I was a little dizzy and slightly nauseated. But he said "we made great progress today!" I am now doing weight-bearing exercises as well as walking, and those are kicking my butt. I think I felt ill because I got too hot.

It's definitely harder to walk in the sand but near the water it can be more firm, more so on some beaches than others. I'm 100 pounds over what "The Man" says is a normal weight, so never give up :koolaid:. Also, I wish you had a pool to walk in since in a pool weight isn't even a factor to consider. My gym has an indoor pool (not open these days due to the pandemic) but it's only for lap swimming, an old past time of mine but not anymore since I get too many sinus infections. I prefer outdoor pools anyway.

My dogs are beyond barking...they are whimpering in the corner.

Yesterday was 10.6 K steps of walking in the park and 40 min. of yoga and weightlifting and core strengthening (including, of course, 100 knees down pelvic tilts - 5 counts each and 100 knees up pelvic tilts - 5 counts each).

Tonight I walked 14.5 K steps in the park. It was a beautiful day that felt like fall. Wow, was it ever nice to get a break from the heat. I decided to park my weights in a different part of the park to try a new area. So I went on my walk and ended up taking a nice breezy lonnngggg path by the river, so by the time I was going to do my ground work-out it was too dark. Then I could not find my weights. It took me forever to remember where I left my weights! I even thought about leaving them overnight and waiting until the light of day to find them, but I didn't want to risk that  . I had to go inside my own brain like a detective would go inside someone else's brain and try and imagine where I'd put my weights down. I went with that and suddenly tripped on them. Hopefully no one else did :vigil:

I was practically crippled all weekend from the weight-bearing exercises I did on Friday. No bueno. It was already painful just to get up and walk to the bathroom, and it became excruciating. I had to use my walker just to go 10 feet. I just did some very light exercises this weekend - they seemed to help. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrrow and I'm going to have to take my rollator. I don't know how that's going to go.

I have been without my beloved bicycle for a month or two, because I need someone to fix the front tire and I also want to have caliper brakes installed.

So I'm getting my bicycle fixed this weekend. But until then, *lol*, :cheesy: , I plan to walk. Yep, Yep. I'm in no big hurry to accumulate a bunch of steps, but if I at least get 9K steps in, I will be happy and count it as a success.

But the real exercise challenge for me is to bicycle more than 27 miles (13.5 miles to my favorite park, 13.5 miles back home).

I am planning a round trip bicycle trip which hopefully has a few places for stop-over purposes (ya gotta go pee, right?). I'm guessing by late September I will do a test run and if I do okay on my test run, then I'm buying a bicycle rack for my car, so I can take my bicycle with me to the beach... where there are lots of bicycle paths to explore.

Cheers, and happy adventures in exercising to all. : )

My feet have reminded me that they did over 12.4k steps. And then they yelled, "hey that 6 miles!"

I won't argue. I remember being there!

I got another upright exercise bike that is working out very well. It's good to use now and will be good after I have knee surgery.

Rode 4.2 miles in 16 minutes on exercise bike with resistance at lowest setting.

Did 40 arm rolls while riding the bike by sticking my arms straight out while and rolling them forward 10 times, then backwards 10 times, then forward, etc.
