Title is self-explanatory. And it's fine for posts to be boring and about the whole experience, not just the exercise.

Here's my exercise experience today (1 hour):

After work I went to the gym. It was snowing and raining. I used an elliptical-like cardio machine called the Arc Trainer for 45 minutes. While on it, I watched a reality show called "LA Shrinks" (or something like that) about therapists' problems and their sessions with clients. It seems like an unethical show, and I had a hard time getting into it because I didn't find anyone on it very likable. After that I went to a mat and did stretching, yoga poses, and weight lifting for 15 minutes. During that I listened to a a really annoying, loud young female trainer and one of her older man-clients. They were spending most of the time talking about their personal lives. I was glad that she spoke loud and clearly because it gave me something to listen to, and they're conversation was so inappropriate (She was kind of giving him a paid "girlfriend experience" as they say) that it was like a reality show. It was a really nice time at the gym today.

My walking has not been able to do on my mom's treadmill. the motor on it won't run while I am on it, it keeps stopping. i think it's time to trash the thing because the motor is burned out. I don't live near any gyms nor could I afford a membership and it's just too freaking cold most days to go out and walk. I just do my stretching exercises for my back and legs to keep them moving and as pain free as I can get them til it's warm enough to go out and walk. My grandmother has a treadmill in her shed she doesn't use so I am going to ask her if I can use it when I visit her in June. I am limited on my ability to walk, I can barely handle 30 mins until the pain starts setting in. I have pushed myself for 45 mins walking and it really starts to hurt. I just have to keep pushing my pain level tolerance I guess. I have 3 bad discs in my back and permanent nerve damage in both legs to my toes starting at my lower back.
I am having trouble being motivated since the damn treadmill quit working right. I am not doing what I need to do walking wise right now. I know I am bad at being motivated, but being out in the cold damp weather is really painful for me, that's why i want it to warm up before I venture outdoors to walk. I have a route that I know is just over a mile and I plan on walking it when the weather is better.
I need the support here to be more motivated to do what I need to do to take better care of my strength in my muscles and walking helps me lose weight too.

Thanks for starting this thread, NY. I appreciate it. I am going to subscribe to it for support.

I can see that this is going to be a rather inspiring thread. Starting tomorrow, I will play too!! :D

Keeping in mind I will be starting out slow and picking up thr pace as my legs begin to limber up more... Gotta work out those arthritis kinks for the spring/summer, right? ;)

I live in a tiny HEE HAW type town in Texas, no malls to walk in or anything. There is Nothing here to do whatsoever. I live here because I have to help my mom when she needs to go to the doctor, issues with her house needing repairs, etc. So I am limited on what resources I have available. The towns in the surrounding areas don't have anything either as far as being able to have resources. Thanks for the effort Jac and the reps.
I appreciate everything. I wish I did have other resources available or the ability to afford a membership somewhere. I am on a fixed disability income and it sucks big ones.
It's getting colder by the weekend and rain in the forecast, so no walking this weekend for sure. Another cold front is heading inward from the West coast via Canada etc. Spring certainly isn't here yet. I wish it were warmer.

I joined a really cheap gym in December. I used to pay literally 12 times as much for Crunch in my neighborhood. It's huge, with splashy purple and yellow decor, very decent new equipment, but no free weights, classes, trainers, or any of the high-end stuff—none of which I ever used.

Anyway, on the way home from work I get off the train, walk a block to my new gym, then use seven stationary weight machines (four sets, ten reps each at each machine).

Sometimes I change in the bathroom at work as I'm leaving at 5, so I can move in and out of the gym even more quickly. I always feel like I'm in a hurry to get home, which is where I want to be, 24/7, but alas it is not possible.

After I leave the gym I get back on the train, go a few more stops, and I'm home. I have some frozen grapes and relax for a few minutes, then I do 15 minutes on my exercycle, a beautiful, museum-quality (I saw one just like it at the Smithsonian, LOL!), Schwinn from the sixties that really kicks my ass.

I do that three times a week. Not as much as I used to do, but that's the pattern I'm in now.

Just started to get back on the exercise horse last week. Eliptical and free weights in my house.

Hiking several miles in the woods each weekend with the dog is standard year round, so I don't really count that. :dog:

Got outta bed, lifted a tea cup :tea:

There may be more exercise later ;)

I'm a cyclist. I can't bear exercising in a closed room. I use my bike as transport as well as for joy riding. Not much need for 'dedicated' exercise when you ride a bike daily.

I walk pretty much every single day;
but what works for me, on a consistent basis,
is jumping (or dancing) on an indoor trampoline:

I feel tons better when I make time for that
in my daily routine (for about an hour); but it depends on if my
neighbors are home or not (I live above them).
When I'm doing my exercise routine on the trampoline
I usually have the music turned up pretty loud (bass).
Mostly, if I can work up a sweat, fairly soon into my routine,
I keep that pace for about another half hour or so.
I've heard that a person can burn up more calories, if you
push yourself to maintain a routine of exercise for a period
of time - once you pass the threshold of breaking into a sweat.

I want to get back into a gym but this seasonal work gig is kicking my butt hard. It feels like I am working out all day long at work. Especially upper body work. However being right hand dominant I am getting too much work on my right side and need to even it out. So free weights have now been added to my at home routine that includes, Yoga, sit ups, pushups and swimming when it is not thunder lighting and hail. Like today. Each day I walk between 2-6 miles just because I like to walk.

I need a bike. Another great workout.

Nice idea for a thread :)

Thank you.

Yes Cinn, shoveling counts.

Today pulling two shifts I really haven't had time to get started so to speak. I walked to and from work twice which equals outt to approx. one mile. If I really broke down all the up and down I do to answer the door I could say that I do a good 50 squats easily. there's really no sitting still at work.

I want to get a pedometer (?) I would be interested to see just how many steps I take in a day at the shelter.

Tomorrow, or rather, today and after I get some sleep, I want to begin my stretching regiment. Slow and steady wins the race.

Today was my full workout day at the gym. This means 30 minutes on the treadmill where I try and occupy my mind with tv, or going over stuff I have to do, or just people watching.

Today, I got to watch someone on the eliptical, in spandex, wearing a thong, with bubble butt buns of steel. Unfortunately, today was one of those days where all the women were on the treadmills and all the men were on the elipticals.

Then it is 35-40 minutes using the nautilus machines. Most of them are to maintain core strength. Some are just for muscle definition. Some just feel good.

Then it was back on the treamill for an extra 15 minutes to just cool down.

And, for some comic relief, I did a little Mother Nature resistance training, i.e. fighting the gale force winds to get back to my car.

Just, walk around your home. Just design a path and walk it over and over until you've reached your pain point that says, "that's enough". That way, you will still get walking in, but you'll be in a warmer environment.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Does shoveling count?? Cuz it sure feels like it should.... lol

Totally counts! It can burn, depending on weight and proportion, almost 300 calories per hour. :)

Today pulling two shifts I really haven't had time to get started so to speak. I walked to and from work twice which equals outt to approx. one mile. Tomorrow, or rather, today and after I get some sleep, I want to begin my stretching regiment. Slow and steady wins the race.

I have a pedometer that my honey gave me and it's worked out well for a few days but yesterday, I think Mercury Retrograde was in full blast with it because I know I didn't get over 10,000 steps (the goal for most) in. I spent a lot of time in the office, so it should have just been about 4000-5000 steps. Hmmmm.

Now, for my exercise experience:

I'm not making the time to exercise outside of work, so my experiences involved picking up other people's litter and cleaning metal boxes and running back and forth doing this and that on the property.

Most days I don't mind it, but this weekend is going to have rain all weekend and everything will be muddy and mucky and I don't care for that. So, this weekend, in addition to my usual experiences cleaning up after others (complete with the usual internal grumbling about people being raised in barns and having no consideration for others whatsoever), I will most likely be mopping up muddy streaks on my light gray floors.

Grumbling will be optional, as always.

Island, I love PF! I've seen a few throwdowns when the Lunk Alarm goes off. When I was working out there, that was definitely an interesting experience to have while I was exercising.

I tend to be a seasonal exerciser. I do Yoga in the park (3 days a week) from spring to early fall. I love outdoor yoga and there are so many free classes here in Seattle during the summer. In the winter, I have a lot of trouble getting motivated and it is the time I need it most (as double stuff Oreos call out to me louder in the winter.)

I did buy a groupon last month for "Beginning Pole Dance Lessons-a 6 week course." OMG... Can't believe I did that! But it is for everyday women and not for those trying to make a living at it. That would have been too intimidating!! exercising next to a bunch of sexy 20 year olds is NOT my idea of a good time.

I bought the groupon as I thought it might just be fun and an incentive to work out. Class begins on April 4th so I may not exercise much (besides walking my dog which I do everyday) until then. The class going on now was too full so i have to wait. But after the class ends... my free Yoga in the park will begin again. WooHoo!

I do one basic thing every day. I go nordic walking in sand (no impact, I can't walk on hard surfaces so this is a must) for as long as I can, with stop offs to do basic streching/range of motion every 30-45 minutes.

There is the place where I stop off to refill my water bottle 3-4 times per walk, There are different heights of pilings, so I use them for modified bodyweight exercises every other day. If I just do 15 of each at each stop so I hardly even notice doing it and I get 45-60 reps of each done. I prefer that to actually 'working out'. I still get the basics in though.

I also very much prefer being active outdoors, the fresh air and sun do wonders for my mental health. Of course, having a moderate climate helps. Yep, very thankful for that.

P.S. Great thread idea!

Hmm, going to have to try what Gemmie suggested, walking around my apt. I need a pedometer to see how much I can walk in 30 mins.
Great idea for now, Gemme, thanks for the reminder I do have a place to walk indoors, lol. But I still can't wait til Spring and Summer are here. I prefer walking outdoors when it's warmer.

It's warming up finally! I got a good hike in with the dog. Was walking through snow on back trails but it was warm enough that we didn't mind too much.

Rowing machine for 30 minutes or so.

Taught a cooking class that had me running about for a couple of hours. Teaching 15 college kids how to make a whole foods lunch. That was fun busy with with a good meal to follow!

I did a two hour workout at the gym today, and it was fucking fabulous! I love when I can sleep in on a Sunday and then go to the gym with all my focus and energy as opposed to work days where I might be tired or distracted and not have enough time to do a longer work-out.

First I went on the elliptical-like machine for an hour while I was able to flip between two really good shows. One was an episode of SNAPPED about a lesbian love triangle murder, and the other was a reunion hosted by Andy Cohen on Bravo of the Shahs of Sunset (a reality show I like).

Then I did an hour combo of lifting free weights, yoga, ab exercises, stretches, and the like. I never listen to anything during that because I need to focus and count. It's not like I can zone out, and I like the attention it all requires anyway. It feels good after my heart rate is up from the cardio. I feel like I'm in a state of meditative bliss.

I looked around for this one woman who is always at the gym, as in always. No matter when I show up she's there. She is always doing the stair master. Man, does she ever stay on that stair master for a long time. I muse on her a lot, like why the fuck is she at the gym so much. She is always alone and wearing black skin tight shorts and a black bra top. Her hair is shoulder-length bleach blonde, and she wears it with a pony tail coming out of a baseball cap. She's good at texting while working out intensely. That would kill me. She looks like she has no body fat and does not look anorexic. She looks very fit and muscular. I even wondered if there was a FTM trans element about her because of the traditionally boyish-body that she's created and a kind of boyish walk too. But she wears a little perfume and lipstick, so I've kind of quashed that theory. It's hard to tell how old she is, maybe in her thirties. We exchange the occasional smile. It makes me think of the Jill Sobule song "Lucy at the Gym."

Today at my desk:

Stretching exercises & 60 reps each (with 10 pnd dumbbell, on each arm) curls, and triceps (who cares that my co-workers where all googly eyed, and thought I was a weirdo :P).

During my last 20 minute break, I walked down that damn hill that our office sits on, and back up it, 3 times.

Was slammed for work for 4.5 days in a row. Today was partially a recuperation day, but I also did a bunch of spring cleaning, so lots or trips to the trash/recycling cans and moving stuff around. It doesn't sound like much, but it caught up with me.

Tomorrow...back to the gym.

Yesterday was a great day to get out and get moving! I let my employee work on some training in the office and I took the maintenance cart and toodled about the property. I cleaned several spaces and enjoyed the wind, except for in the really small space. The wind kept interferring and moving my pile around before I could get it swept up so I had to work extra hard to clean a smaller space. That feels wrong to me. Bigger space: more effort is how my brain computes it. But noooo....Mother Nature said otherwise.

All in all, it was still a good day and I took over 9000 steps during my working hours.

Back on the treadmill...

Last year I completed the Couch to 5k program, and then promptly got lazy after I achieved my goal. I'd go back intermittently but I could never reach my 30 minute/ 3 mile pace because I wasn't working consistently.

I started it again a few weeks ago. My main goal, right now, is to just keep going, just keep trying. And to be as consistent as possible.

I was dreading the run on deck for tonight: week 4, run 1 - a leap from 3 minute run intervals to 6 minute run intervals. It was HARD. Really Hard. 6 minutes can feel like an eternity on the treadmill. But I did it.

The most challenging part for me, actually the two most challenging parts for me are:

1. Getting out the door.

Why? WHY? must it be a battle every time? (answer: because I fear failure.)

2. Combatting the negative dialogue that dominates my thoughts during my run. "I can't, I can't, I can't" syndrome.

When I run my legs hurt, my calves are tight, I might get cramps or aches; and I'm still struggling to get back into a good breathing pattern. But 99% of the time these are minor issues and nothing to keep me from physically running (in fact most of these things get better as I warm up). So, I *know* the only thing that is keeping me from moving forward and succeeding - is me. And the most challenging part is to overcome the voice in my head that says "I can't". When I am able to drown out the "I can't" it is a much more enjoyable experience.

So, anyway, today I ran a run I didn't think I could complete. :) It was hard. And I'm proud that I did it.

3 sets of 20 reps 90lbs legs abduction

1 set of 12 reps 40lbs triceps cable pushdown

I pretty much do this Mon-Wed-Fri. I added something new today.
The 15 minute workout by Shaun T. It's supposed to be everyday for five weeks with great results! It's low impact on my knees.
I had to quit all cardio months ago due to osteoarthritis in my knees.
It kinda brought me down and I've made no weight loss progress since. When I bend at the knee, there's a lot of crackling sounds, so my knees are pretty shot! Hopefully this new workout will be okay...
Anyway, I feel great at the moment and tell myself "Not bad for someone close to sixty!"

Yay Support for exercise.

I went to the gym tonight and did 40 minutes on the Stairmaster.
This is my favorite thing because:
It doesn' t hurt my knee
I can't NOT get my heart rate up it because it keeps me working hard, like an ellipitical, but the ellipitical hurts me knee.

I read while I'm on the Stairmaster or obsess about work. It's all good.

I used to play balloon volleyball with someone and it really IS a good workout. :)

Today was GREAT even though I didn't get a lot of steps in.

I felt a bit sick to my stomach (<--not the great part) and went walking around the property. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing. Beautiful!

I cleaned a couple of metal boxes and got a happy little startle when I opened up the door to one and two lizards jumped at me. Well, not at me per say. More like up and to the side of me. I love the little guys! One was bigger, around 4 inches long, and the other was lil 'un around 2-2.5 inches long and they cracked me up. The longer/older one found a corner and just froze there, hoping I wouldn't see him but the little guy...he totally cracked me up because he ran from one side to the other and back and did that crazy, wiggle as he runs thing used to disorient attackers as to the lizard's exact location. Such a wiggly guy! Made my day.

No tails were lost and I still got my box cleaned.

I have been looking for parts to fix mu car that got backed into, busted out both rear lights plus put a huge dent and scratch on my bumber.I went to a couple of u-pull it yards but didnt find anything so I ended up getting two from ebay.I did find a power switch pad for the door that worked great so now I can set both side mirrors from the master switches so the u-pull it yard wasn't a total lost.Being the bunper is moulded rubber compound my so just took it off then poped out the dent then replaced the bumper....saved me a bunce of $$$.I had forgotten how trashy and hard to walk through those places could be.

I did an hour on the elliptical, intensity level 25, while watching "Most shocking crimes committed while in the buff." Nuff said.

Then I did an hour of abs, yoga, weight lifting, and stretching.

The woman who I talked about it in my previous post who is always at the gym was there on the stair master as usual. She climbs at a very high intensity level such that it appears as if she's trudging in a Sisyphean way, her strong back slightly hunched over and her muscular arms clutching the sides and absorbing the weight of her efforts.

Yes I took the little dinosaur for a walk today. She was very good, even when other dinosaurs passed us on the path (just kidding; she is the only dinosaur!).

It was a spectacular day. The reservoir was choppy and catching a lot of sun in its waves. There's a narrow spit that splits the water into halves, and a single file row of seagulls and ducks were perched on it. Every bit of the perimeter we walked was backdropped with Manhattan skyline. Little green shoots were coming up, around the bases of trees.

It was a great workout!

Today I did what has been my go-to gym routine: an hour on the elliptical (intensity: 25) and then an hour of yoga, stretching, abs, and free weights. I was exercising next to a trainer and her trainee again. They were basically having a conversation about how much their boyfriends suck. Otherwise my time was very relaxing. Not many people are at the gym Sunday night, so no one tries to steal my equipment, and I have a lot of room to move in. Great work-out!

Long story long...
My credit card was recently hijacked by someone in the UK! btw, Chase was great, they caught it right away and 2nd Day Aired me a new card. Got it the next day! So anyway, I brought the new card to my gym to update, and they said they had a new policy, no credit cards. They want my routing number and account number for my checking account. Well, I explained that I was a little skittish about that due to my credit card experience. I said at least a credit card is protected against theft, but if someone hacked into their system and emptied my checking account, it would be a disaster! They said sorry, no credit cards. How about cash? No, we don't take cash.

So... I quit the gym and used Craigslist to fill out and complete a home gym in my livingroom! I am really happy about it.

Today I worked abs, chest, back, biceps, and triceps.
End of story. :)

I am entering week 2 of being grounded.

I normally spend time every day Nordic walking in sand on my local beach. Once a year we have 'erosion control', which means a bunch of bulldozers and earth movers show up to redecorate. It lasts 2-3 weeks and the beach is closed while they do it, only open on the weekend when everybody and their mother-in-law shows up because they've been cooped up all week. I did get out over the weekend but it isn't the same. One more week to go.

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous (we had beautiful weather), but another weather system has moved in to our area: Today it looks like it's going to be rather chilly and not in the lower 60s, like the weather forecast predicted.

Anyway, I felt achy this morning due to the abrupt change in weather, but I got up and worked out for about an hour on the trampoline and I'm getting ready to get some errands done in town this afternoon - I'll probably end up walking about 5 miles, altogether.

Later on this evening, I'll wind down my day with a gentle routine of yoga and meditate quietly with some soft music.

... I only got in a 1.5 mile walk today.

Whilst on said walk, my IPod decided to be wonky, and I didn't have my spectacles on to find the problem. So, a bit after I started my 7th lap, I stopped to figure it all out. And, well, long story short, I lost all interest. Damn technical glitches (and somewhat lessened eyesight)!

I rose early this morning and walked about 5 miles or better. I walked the trails on a nearby butte, where you can see for miles and miles (on a clear day) and although there are no stairs, walking the butte requires a person to be able to tolerate changes in altitude because you begin at a ground level (per se) and must walk upwards - for what seems to be a long climb. Once you get to the top of the butte, there are many other trails a person can take, for example: I wandered down the backside of the butte, into the forested area. And once you've gone down into the forested area, you have to scale the trail to come back up. Which can really give your legs and calves quite the workout. It took me about 2.5 hours for my inner-urban workout on the butte and once I got home, my legs were still feeling the 'burn.'

eta: I saw a quail hen with her brood of 4 chicklings, an egret standing among the dense reeds of the tarn-like pond, and spied what I thought was a red-tailed hawk - floating on a draft of wind, above. I also noticed that the blackberry bushes were loaded with blossoms.

Today at lunch I walked down along the Hudson River in Battery Park City, a beautiful paved walkway that winds past restaurants on the water, the little harbor with yachts, children's playgrounds, the little ponds and walkways with mallards and pigeons taking baths in puddles.

I stopped and sat for a while, looking across the water to Ellis Island, where there are cranes I guess because they're doing reconstruction. It was hit bad in the last hurricane. Also I was close to the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island and could see the Museum of the American Indian which is in the beautiful neoclassical former U.S. Customs House, right on the tip of Manhattan, looking out over New York Harbor.

I got a smoothie on the way back into the office.

I forgot my lunch today, second time this week. It was a rough week but by eating right, getting enough sleep and exercising, I have been feeling more grounded.

Today was interesting.

I woke before 7am and couldn't get back to sleep so I opted to go visit the gym, sure that I'd be alone in my early morning Easter endeavors.

Just as I got to the gate around the corner from the fitness center, a bunny jumped out of the bushes and zipped past me.

Yes, the Easter bunny tried to give me a heart attack.

Then I got dive bombed by a dove.

Second heart attack attempt of the day and all within seconds of one another.

Then I got into the gym and completed my workout. I kept it simple since it's been a while since I've hopped on ye ole treadmill. One hour with slowly increasing increments of speed and incline. Towards the end of it, I was definitely working up a sweat.

Heart attack attempt three?

Eh, so that's my excitement for the day I hope.

Happy bunnicula day!

Sorry for the info gap. :)

Two weeks every spring the beach is closed for "erosion control", bulldozers push stuff back where it is supposed to be according to parks dept, and two weeks later mother nature puts it back where she wants it. An expensive and pointless tug-of-war. Mother nature always wins.

As far as other places go, I can't do hard surfaces anymore (blown shocks) and don't have a membership anywhere with an elliptical, the other option, so I just wait it out.

The older I get, the more I realize that sittin' around just doesn't work out well.

Thanks to the warmer day here in urban N.E. Jersey, I got to ride my bike in the park and weave through the walkers (no bike path here), who were very accommodating (I live around very sweet people). With my music in my ears and the wind in my face and my body and bike as one pumping machine....almost perfection!! Did five miles at 7 per hour, so don't picture me as a female Lance without the enhancers. I started to stitch up because it's been so long since I've been breathing hard in the cool air and exercising. I'm sure that stitch will pass (what causes that, btw?)

Biking and swimming are my two top ones! Because I have slight (very slight, thank you Universe) knee-impact issues they are the best! Since I don't belong to a gym with a pool, I'll have to wait for that one when Kooch and I are back in Lakewood on some weekends after Labor Day.

Hi nycfembbw!
Considering I have had a severe case of torn chest muscles since December. Worst pain I have ever known. I started light duty exercise today. They will never heal if I don't quit doing normal for me. All the Pulmonary Specialist said was you will be in a lot of pain for a long time and please, please do not use that dewalt 20 volt max cordless reciprocating saw until you are totally well. It vibrates very hard. This demolition saw is so powerful, it will knaw through anything. Oh, so sweet! I could tell you some stories about it. I have been using my craftsman 6 AMP corded one. The doc made no mention of that one. She only said the cordless one. I think I just got some understanding and acceptance about it this weekend.

Today I have been very slowly organizing my lumber and painting plywood panels. My new lawnmower needs a waterproof home. Leaving to pick it up shortly. I'm so excited. This time I got high wheels in the back. :) Fun!

Maybe if I write it here, I'll be accountable.

I've belonged to an inexpensive, no whistles and bells gym since November but got way off track :(. They have a program called Activetrax, in which you get a daily workout, alternating body parts-it's fun to increase strength and you get a neat little calendar of your progress. But I'm queen of excuses.

So, tomorrow, 1 April, I start over. Besides, with summer and Reunion coming up, I think I can do a lot of good over that time. Although just doing it for health and long-term counts more, I'm one of those who likes to have future events for motivation.

Today's workout (which is also my favorite): a mix of walking and trail running.

I have gotten into the Zombies Run! app. It gives you a story line and also uses a mix of your own playlist in the app. It's fun to listen to, if you're into that kind of thing. Although, I must say that if you run in an isolated area like I do, hearing people scream "RUN RUN RUN!!!" at you through your headphones, along with yelling and moaning zombies...the first time or two you use the app will freak you out a little. Or....maybe I'm just becoming very easily spooked these days!! LOL

Tonight I added a few stationary weight machines to my routine at the gym, a couple upper-body ones, and one where you stand, lean forward on a padded block and push with one leg at a time backwards, so that it is extended behind you. It feels like I would imagine water ballet feels. ("Ballet" sounds inflated but I don't know what else to call it.)

While I was waiting for one of the ab machines, I talked to a woman who told me she's 59, and had been away from the gym for a couple years and was just getting back into it. But she has a boyfriend, 37, who keeps her young. She's french/Spanish, and he's Jamaican, 6'4" and has two kids of his own.

I've found that since I stopped wearing headphones at the gym, I have a lot more conversations with people.

This is so true. When I am at the beach I don't wear headphones and I also don't wear sunglasses unless I am walking right into the sun. I think that the fact I am alone also makes me more approachable. People will stop and strike up conversation all the time. Yesterday I took that walk again at lunch where I go alongside the Hudson to where it opens into New York Harbor. The paved path winds past restaurants, little harbors with boats, mazes of tulips and benches; you get the picture. The water was choppy and slapping at the pilings. I stopped this time to walk through the memorial to the Irish Famine, which is built around an excavated stone house. The weather was spectacular. There's nothing like New York on a clear day. I met up with a friend/former colleague for a 4-mile hike round the reservoir basin at Mt. Tom. We chatted and laughed and caught up on the last couple of years and walked a 15-min/mile pace. The first substantial outdoor exercise I've had since the onset of winter. It was sunny but so windy and brisk. I was glad I was wearing layers. It was invigorating, I could have done another 4-mile loop. I might go again for a double loop tomorrow.

Over the past few days, due learning about the health condition of my youngest brother who I guess is now diabetic, I began to rethink my position on certain items I have always told myself that I must have, daily. Like coffee. Sometimes I drink too much coffee. So anyway, I am making a change in my own thinking processes about why I think I need to have coffee with copious amounts of sweetness and I've come to the conclusion that I really need to change that part of my health behaviors.

So I am going to drink more water and less coffee and place stringent limits on my coffee consumption.

In exercise news (for my body): ;)

I decided that I need to walk differently; in that I need to do a bit of breathing exercises too - so that I can get my body metabolism to reach new heights - while walking on a daily basis.

I experimented with doing that, breathing differently while walking, and I found out that I felt better when I breathed deeply while walking. I guess I haven't been breathing too deeply, except when out of breath while trying to climb up hills or stairs. But I was thinking that I breathe deeply when I'm doing my jumping routines on the trampoline, which causes me to burn more calories and so, the scientist in me decided that I needed to do that when I'm walking, too. I get a bit sweaty when I'm doing that now, breathing deeper while walking, but I think it's making a difference. Especially since I made changes with drinking more water.

In short: Drinking more water and getting sweaty while walking now makes me more aware of the fact that I need better shoes for walking and if I keep doing what I'm doing, at least I will feel better and hopefully by summer, look a bit better too. For certain, since I changed what I am doing this week, I definately feel better on a day to day basis.

I was planning to go to the gym for a run on the treadmill today but when I took the dog out for his walk I realized it was actually quite mild, despite being grey and windy.

I decided to hop on the bike path and walk 2-miles down the hill to the market for a few groceries I needed and back again, as my exercise for today.

Seen: 1 black bear, 1 ginormous skunk.

I see black bears every spring and every autumn, just a block from my house in a densely wooded section of land that the bike path cuts through. For a couple of weeks, twice a year, it's like a bear super highway out there. I've become quite accustomed to them. And so long as they're a fair distance away, I think it's pretty amazing to share the space with them.

The skunk, however, gave me pause... :| I considered re-routing and going a mile or so out of my way (skunks can move really quickly and you don't need to be terribly close to get sprayed) but it had scurried up the embankment about 15-ft away, I stuck to the far outer edge of the path and picked up my pace to pass it.

I guess everyone is up from their long winters' nap.

(Me included.)

My daughter has gotten into competitive swimming. She will be swimming for a local team this summer, then for her high school next fall. In order to actually teach her to swim correctly (she's never had a formal lesson), I hired a trainer. I see a lot of difference just in two sessions. You never know, Michael Phelps had to start somewhere!

Anyway, we meet at UALR's pool, and after the lesson, she got permission to hang around and dive, just fool around. And so did I! It felt so great to swim laps again, much like meeting an old friend. I like to imagine my problems and challenges written on cement blocks that fall off of me as I go, making me lighter and faster. I picture them small and manageable down at the bottom of the pool. When I'm done, not only have I exhausted myself in a good way, worked out my body, but at the least I can feel a little better about what I'm struggling with.

I know I've been dealing with depression for most of the winter. To get out of this, I've tried to remember what I was doing when I felt my happiest and most joyful. One thing was that I was extremely active. At one point, I was a runner, dancer and a swimmer, though not on a competitive level. I was just always going. When I retired from dance, and thus from all the rest of that, I lost myself. I told my counselor that I wanted to find myself again, and I suspect that in the pool is one way to do it.

For me, it's not even about getting in shape or losing weight. If I think like that, I'll quit. I call those laps (or dance, or running-if I can run again) a kind of meditation.

Good for you for takeing these first steps in your journey.I do get how you have felt over the winter with depresion,I to deal with this issue, last night I was watching a horse related sports even I heavly competed in for years that was the grove I belonged in.I have watched lots of simular events in rt and on TV but for some reason It slaped me in the face like a brick bat, after a bit of just letting it happen then ppicking up the peices I took charge of it today by draging out the workout equipment thenseting it back up on the patio,I threw out the old bench cause it was falling apart.I worked out till I got a good mind blowing sweat going with the radio blowing out servivor them songs from the Rocky movies. It's a start and I will contenue to do this,it's not I dont have something going for me it's just feeling the loss of who I was,I gess it's like serching for a place of belonging.Good luck on your journey,go with power and pride.

Last night, I went for a late night walk and I think I broke a baby toe on my right foot - it's swollen today and I can also see that when I tripped and fell last night, that it also took part of the toe nail off, too. I was lost in thought, trying to free my mind of thoughts, when it happened.

I have no idea how far I walked last night, but I was gone for about two hours - an hours worth of walking at a fairly fast pace and about an hours worth of limping weirdly, to get back home.

I really should not have gone walking late at night, so I'll refrain from doing that from now on. I work today, so I should get a fair amount of exercise (walking, lifting, sometimes jogging, too).

Well, i tried that new Yoga video i bought, and realized sadly, that i cannot do most of it..
Not cause i am too heavy or out of shape.. but due to all the surgeries i have had to my lower abdomen, and the slipped disc right above my tail bone.. i cannot get on the floor.. no matter what kind of mat i use.. and lay prone on my stomach..
i cannot even lay on my stomach anymore in bed.. which was my MOST favorite way to sleep..
Soo..
guess i will be looking for other work out stuff..
i did walk around in Walmart tonight for about an hour or two..
does that count?

30 minutes on the elliptical

watched a dangerous stunts gone wrong type reality clips show while on the elliptical:

there was a man who bungee jumped tied inside a shopping cart over a lake
he was successful in that part and then came down beside the lake but then as a prank one of his daredevil friends pushed him into the lake while he was still clipped in the cart (one of the clips was still on and the friends didn't realize it.). so when he didn't come back up his friends jumped in to try and save him but with no luck. luckily he was ultimately able to get that last clip off himself and then get to the surface of the water but it was a close call. i thought to myself, "my god! i am frightened of the tiniest things, and this guy is bungee jumping tied to a shopping cart above a lake and then sinking in a lake and barely resurfacing only to catch his breath and laugh!"

when i arrived, the woman who is ALWAYS at the gym was there on a different elliptical. when i left she was still going strong, of course. i found out her name is jill by hearing a trainer call her that. it's nice to finally know her name.

earlier this week the fire alarm went off at the gym. in very new york style, everyone just ignored it, knowing we'd be told if it wasn't an accident. it went off for a good five minutes (incredibly loud with flashing lights). then an announcement came over the speakers: false alarm. no one blinked. we are a jaded bunch here.

I got home from work put on my running gear and ran about 3 miles. The weather was perfect,I was motivated to run, but I felt like crap the whole time. Kept waiting for my second wind to kick in and it never did. Half way into it, my legs felt like lead and I got a stitch in my side , and I was glad when I got back to my neighborhood and it was all behind me. Some days it just happens like that.

I also saw this guy who thinks my name is Amy and always says, "Hi, Amy!" He knows who I am, if you know what I mean, but just somehow started thinking my name was Amy. I don't correct it because it's too fun to have regular conversations with someone while being called by the wrong name

I also have to figure out what to do about the pain that occurs when I run (shin splints I assume).

Back to my cross training routine that feels good and gets results.*

-- Start with speed walk to the gym as a warm up.
-- Shoot baskets for 1/2 hour then run length of court several times while dribbling basketball (starting at 3 laps as I resume my aerobic capability from a sedentary first couple months this year).
-- Ride programmable recumbent bike (starting at 10 minutes per above aerobic status) -- will start riding outside once Spring actually arrives here in Chicago.

*The gym I use is at a University and is closed Sundays so I'm going to take the dog on a very long walk, go on a bike ride (since it's predicted to be near 70 -- shock and awe), and just do the usual free weights and push ups at home today.

Getting back into an exercise routine feels really good.

but I did quite a bit of housework: deep cleaned the bathroom and kitchen and went up and down the stairs several times today (laundry).

The next stretch of good weather we have, I plan to do a day trip out to Sauvie's Island and walk the trails at the bird sanctuary and walk the beach out to the most northern tip of the island (probably about ten miles worth of walking, altogether). The Columbia River is on the northern side of the island and the Willamette River is on the southern side, but both rivers converge at the northern most tip of the island.

I skipped my workout this morning. My knee is still swollen from yesterday's workout and, after debating with myself about it, I decided to rest, ice, elevate, and repeat today. I decided that I'd rather miss one day than risk an injury. But, the amazing thing is that I actually MISS the workout! If you had told me a month ago...or hell, even a week ago...that I would actually miss getting my butt whooped, pushing myself, being sore, etc... I would have suggested that you examine your mental health! Who knew?? Wow, what a difference a week can make!

If cleaning counts, then I got a workout today..if not (and the personal trainer at my gym says it DOESN'T  ) then I didn't. I should go to the gym later. It's amazing how good my back felt after doing some back work on the machines... :)

I took a long walk on the San Jacinto Monument trail, it goes through a marsh. It is mostly on a boardwalk elevated above the bog and the alligators. It was too windy for mosquitoes and it wasn't too hot. I was several pelicans dipping their mouths in and catching fish. I want to go back today with binoculars.

Sombody talk to me about ellipitical machines,I bought on recently so my son put it toghther yesterday, the pedals sit at a 45* degree angle in the back.Yes,I can do the exersise but feel like im gonna be on my nose if I dont watch it,I see people at the gym going fast on them but I doubt I will ever be running in place while on it...I guarentee its a good workout no matter how fast you go.I bought it so I could have something to burn calories with besides the exersise bike.Btw there is NO way to lower the back of the pedals to a more comfy position.

I am at the end of week three in my ten week challenge. Today, I am feeling absolutely thrilled about my progress! When I started, three short weeks ago, I had a hard time doing sit-ups. I could do crunches, but a full sit-up was beyond me. And I got winded very easily no matter what we were doing. Today, I was not only able to keep up with the sequences, I was able to do every type of sit-up, including the meditation sit-ups, keeping pace with the entire class without being winded at all!

Approx 10miles in and around the towns roads whilst riding the Critical Mass ride.
M'hams and calves are little tight because I've not ridden a 10miler in a while (winter and health keeps rides shorter)
Another course of anti-bionics for continuing chest infection have worked and I only had to stop a couple of times because of the strong winds.
Feels good this morning though.

I think I mentioned, I'm up to three sets of 15 reps on 13 stationary weight machines at the gym now, three times a week. My arms are feeling toned; I'm doing more upper body stuff than usual.

Yesterday I took a walk around the loop at Prospect Park. First I walked and jogged to the park; I just felt like it. It was gorgeous out.

Later, at home, I went down to the basement of my building for something and took the stairs back up to the 9th floor. I was surprised at how hard it was, considering how much I exercise. I think I'll start taking the stairs for a couple floors, then the elevator, and gradually add flights of stairs to the routine till it's not much effort.

Afternoon everyone,it's a fine sunny sunday hear in Louisiana. This morning I managed a 45 minit workout between the basket ball court for a while then time on the bike for twenty minits at a crisp pace( odometer is busted so I don't info from it) then I went to the bowflex for a while then free weights after wards I walked t he yard picking up toys, sticks and what have you to cool down.Later this evening I played somemore b-ball then hit the dreded ellipitical. At first I couldnt do but about a half a minit, this thing is an ass kicker cause if youdon't engage the whole body to balance then actualy use the thing it can't be done..I don't think. So by now after a fue days I am able to go a full minit and a half four times today with onlythe breifest ammount of time betweek each go at it to catch my breath. My legs are the weakest part to deal with because of nerve damage from my back injury but ever how slowly I am geting longer rided at it,I even tryed a fue seconds of back pedaling...yeah right...ouch! So, I have been doing power hour kick/boxing going on three months. I never cared for the gym environment but after the first round I was hooked! I went when it hurt, I went when I was too tired, too bitchy, too stressed, up too late the night before...the 'too-s" are endless at times...

Anyway...I have noticed my body slowly changing. But today, as I was throwing my punches I saw my body in motion - the way in which my shoulder muscles flexed and glistened with sweat, my legs becoming defined with each squat, my arms not missing a beat...I smiled at the sweaty mess and realized - Wow, you are beautiful! The strength inside me now showing through my body. What an amazing show! I finished my rounds and before I left I took one last look at myself. I am going back again and again.

So, that's what I got from my workout today. :)

I'm still modifying some of the more extreme high impact exercise because of my back, but I'm able to do so much more than I was when I first started! I'm trying to talk a friend into doing the next challenge (it starts in June). She's hesitant because she had back surgery several years ago...I've invited her to come try out a class with me, so that she can see the modification exercises and decide if she's comfortable doing them. I hope she takes me up on it. My "tight" jeans are now loose, I have so much more energy, and I feel great!

My ass has finally started working out.

I had to join a gym to do it. First time joining a gym; in the past when I have worked out, I have used home equipment. Joined with a friend at work (work gym), so I am following through. The gym is not that great at work, but I am looking only for a cardio machine and some free weights and they have those, so I am good. It is cheap, too.

Worked out 3 days in a row last week and I will use my eliptical today at home (like right now).

I woke up stiff and sore so decided to do some stretches and faux Tai Chi on the deck (don't know how to do the real kind). That was so inspiring that I ended up doing some charades. Belle would call out what I should be and then I would do the charade. I was a car, airplane, tree quaking in the wind, etc.

Then I read this thread. Very inspirational! I went out in the back yard and did "wind sprints" (more like fast walking). We have a huge backyard so I think I did pretty good. Wally ran along for part of it and howled. Bella went down to one side of the yard and watched. Belle clapped from the deck. Day 1. Lol.

I went to the gym three times this week, which is typical for me. And I did my usual routine: three sets of 15 reps on 13 machines.

On days off, I use my exercycle at home. I'm about to get on it now, watching some cable series.

Other exercise in store for the weekend: Carrying laundry and groceries. Walking.

I'm thinking of going to a movie tonight, something scary or suspenseful so I'll tense up and get some isometrics in, even unconsciously.

2 hrs at the gym

1st hour: Arc Trainer, level 25 intensity, watched the usual silly t.v., stuff I wouldn't watch if I wasn't half preoccupied with exercise: a man eats a giant omelette as part of a contest, and "the news."

2nd hour: abs, free weights, yoga, stretching

As I left the gym, right outside I saw Jill (the gym obsessive) standing with a trainer, whose name I forgot- an African American short haired muscular petite woman who Jill is friends with, and the woman trains her. It was fun to see them in their street clothes. I love to muse about these people I see all the time but barely talk to, especially lesbian looking powerful women ;)

It was a great day at the gym, very empty, just the way I like it.

50 minutes Arc Trainer, watched the second half of the documentary movie "The Devil in Daniel Johnston" about a bipolar talented musician and artist. it was good but depressing. Jill, the woman who is always at the gym, was trudging up that stair master when i arrived and still when I left! She wears that very skimpy yet proper gym clothing that perfectly fit people can get away with paired with either a baseball cap or the type of hat you wear when it's cold outside. The second choice is kind of odd to me. It looks nice but it's a little weird. Here we both were, Sunday evening, on Mother's Day, walking in circles. She has no love for me, and I imagine that my fat, poorly dressed self is probably distasteful to her, but I still feel a a bond with her anyway, because we are both there, and it's an extra thing I can do while I work out, to muse about WTF her deal is. Why is she always there! Is she training for something?

Then I did ten minutes of stretching and went home.

Have a cycling sprint/intervals training session with a group scheduled for tomorrow night.

Awesome! Good luck on the century. :goodluck:

Those bloody headwinds; feels like whichever direction I go at the moment there's a headwind :|

Today's exercise has been nothing more than a mile ride, to town and back, and a few sit-ups. I'm determined to have my 6-pack back by the end of the summer but sadly after recent shoulder damage to the already twice operated on shoulder I can't do planks right now.

Newly back in the game. 30 minutes elliptical and 20_30 minutes working on arms. Yay for muscle memory!

50 minutes Arc Trainer, watched Judge Judy. Was next to a fierce Asian muscular petite older woman. She is a regular and does a lot of weight lifting. I've never seen her smile or talk to anyone. Once I asked her if I could take the free weights she had near her, and she told me in a direct, no-nonsense way that she was still using them. I asked if she could give them to me when she was done, and she said yes and did. Then I had the free weights another day when she likely wanted them, but instead of pining away for them like me, she grabbed a big weighted ball and started hefting it around with her usual focus. She's the type who doesn't need to be dependent on anyone for anything.

After the Arc Trainer today I stretched for twenty minutes and lifted some weights.

On the way in today I saw Jill walking towards "out" but maybe not actually going out because she was dressed too skimpy to actually be going out. She was talking to someone, maybe a guy, in a jovial way and smiling with him. So I smiled and looked right at her, a bit challenging, like a dog. She caught my eye for that second (because I was a familiar object looking right at her), and I smiled and said, "Hi." She had already been smiling and returned a quick hi. It was quite a boring exchange, but for some reason I love boring exchanges. The gym is a dull soap opera, but it makes the smallest differences in the gym days all the more exciting for me.

Well, today my routine consisted of raking and mowing around "The Great Gatsby", a big ol house I share with a femme lawyer . I'm kinda sore after being on my feet most of the day filling up the big rolling garbage container full of leaves, then, rolling it about a block into sections of the woods that need mulch. It's more eco-friendly and cheaper than buying over forty leaf bags. I did this back and forth today about seven or eight times, and am not even half done.

Hello all!

Does anyone do something like Callenetics or fluidity? (looks easy, but trust me, it's NOT) Or super low key type of stuff like a gentle yoga or tai chi??

Or TTapp?? (this one will kick your arse)

Thanks

I swam laps for an hour, then soaked in the hot tub like a steamed Brussels sprout. Could it be I'm starting to crave exercise every day??

3.5 miles with Chessie, and .5 with Obster, and 20 minutes upper body weight training.

I decided today, that I need to shed about 3 good-sized turkeys worth of extra pounds. Chessie says he's on board for that. Believe me, he is a taskmaster!

Try Darcy Bussel's Pilates for life. Not easy at all and the best belly/abs work-out evah! Low impact...only on the joints not on the muscles.

I have to miss my sprint intervals tonight-parenting duties call. But I'll put in extra rowing time this afternoon and a walk with the 100 lb dog for an extra arm workout.

Managed a 5Km walk (with the Newfie!)
and hours of spring clean up/mowing/planting/digging garden work yesterday.

Today: A 10km walk later in the afternoon.

Loving the information shared on this thread :)

Did a circuit at the gym: it's a minute of stepping up and down on a platform, followed by a minute of reps on a series of 10 machines. The entire workout takes 30 minutes (with rest stops in between steps and machines). Then I did my Activetrax workout: this is a daily customized workout with dumbbells, machines and mat work. I also tried the stairstepper, which was a massive FAIL.
I think I am going to work up to a 20 minute mile on the treadmill first before trying that machine again.

I'm trying to get into the pattern of swimming three times a week, and on the other days doing circuit and Activetrax, or a class. On Sundays I plan to take the day off or just play in the pool with the kids.

Just the usual again tonight.

I'm starting to recognize people at my gym, which feels good. The staff knows me, and there is one boy in particular with curly hair that I always say Hi to when I come in.

I've never been to a gym where people were as encouraging to each other as in this one. The men hang out in little groups and so do the women—I've never seen that in a gym before.

A lot of the men are very developed in their upper bodies, and very tattooed. They do a lot of stuff on the mats, old-school pushups and other configurations that look self-taught.

When I smile at the women, they smile back, and lately, they've started initiating interaction with me, which I like. I'm white, and I'm alone, which kind of makes me stand out, but now that I've been going there a few months, I'm starting to feel like I blend in and belong.

I used to be more shy there but now I'm not afraid to say, "Are you gonna do another set?" (in a nice way), when some young guy has been sitting there a long time messing with his phone. And they're always extremely respectful. When I'm waiting for one of them to get off a machine, if he was really trying I sometimes say, "Good work!" like a teacher, and they beam.

The older women are sort of that way with me, which is nice. They sometimes comment on the amount of weight I use, in a complimenting way. Sometimes I will join in with another woman to encourage someone else to use more weight.

I'm older, but among the most fit of the women, and I'm naturally competitive and always feel proud when I get on a machine and move the weight up to my level. On the other hand when I get on a machine after one of the men (most of them are really good about spritzing and wiping down the machine and I always reinforce it with a Thank you!), I sometimes comment with admiration on the unfuckingbelievable amount of weight they use.

I'm getting stronger, and I like how my heart pounds on each machine. Tonight I did an extra machine—so that was 14 machines, three sets of 15 reps on each one.

Yesterday I hit the midpoint of my 10 week challenge and I, along with a group of other members who were also at their midpoint, had our board-breaking day. It is a little ritual that is done for the midpoint of every challenge. I confess I was a bit nervous about it...I've never broken a board with my hand before...I worried about not being able to do it, feeling self-conscious, etc.. On the day, we were given our boards and a marker and told to write on the board...anything we wanted to overcome, or put behind us, or whatever we felt was holding us down or holding us back. Then, we stood in a circle and our trainer came around to each of us...held the board...and on the count of three, you broke the board with the heel of your hand. By the time we all had our turn...there were tears, and cheers, and just an overwhelming feeling of support, encouragement, and community. Who knew that breaking a board could be so emotional...and feel so wonderful? (and yes, I was worried for no reason because I broke my board with no problem. :) )

Walked home from work. Brooklyn to NYC. It took over three hours. I love walking home and not being on the subway for an hour. The one negative is the traffic and pollution at certain points. But that is life. The best part is when I walk uptown by the water right after coming off the Brooklyn Bridge. Wow, the sun shining, sailboats, the breeze, heavenly...

8km skate ( 4 and 4 ) with a break in between.
First 4 km was maniacal-- felt great.
Second 4km was lamenting the burning of my thighs and my sweet portuguese ass.
Now, i feel great!! :)
