Sometimes during the day, I consciously focus on some ordinary object and allow myself a momentary "paying-attention." This paying-attention gives meaning to my life. I don't know who it was, but someone said that careful attention paid to anything is a window into the universe. Pausing to think this way, even for a brief moment, is very important. As you take a few minutes each day to quiet your mind, you will
discover a nice benefit: your everyday, "ordinary" life will begin
to seem far more extraordinary. Little things that previously went
unnoticed will begin to please you. You'll be more easily satisfied,
and happier all around. Rather than focusing on what's wrong with
your life, you'll find yourself thinking about and more fully enjoying
what's right with your life. The world won't change, but your
perception of it will. You'll start to notice the little acts of
kindness and caring from other people rather than
the negativity and anger.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

out to the risk of living with both arms. One has to embrace the
world like a lover. One has to accept pain as a condition of

Joy is what we are, not what we must get. Joy is the
realization that all we want or need in life has been
etched into our souls. Joy helps us see not what we are
"going through," but what we are "growing to"--a greater
sense of understanding, accomplishment, and enlightenment.
Joy reveals to us the calm at the end of the storm, the peace

04-17-2010, 08:33 PM
Ten years ago, I was a social worker in Tennessee, doing crisis intervention work with delinquent kids and their families. I was hundreds of miles away from loved ones or anyone remotely close to me, I was lonely, struggling with coming out of the closet to my family, and my personal life was a general mess. One morning, I was at the courthouse for the hearing of one of the kids on my caseload, and in the middle of the crowded a lobby, an elderly gentleman stopped me and handed me a business card before continuing to pass through and exit the courthouse. The card was pink and had roses on it. On one side was a bible verse. On the other, it read:

You will never leave where you are until you decide where you would rather be.

I don't know who the man was or why he gave me that card. I've held onto it ever since, and as a matter of fact, it has a permanent place on my desk and is sitting here right in front of me. I've looked at it many times over the years and considered tossing it, but I knew that with my tendency to be an impulsive and leaping-without-looking kind of girl, I needed to hold onto it as a reminder, and it's served that very purpose. I've read it and have even repeated those words to myself out loud on numerous occasions.

You will never leave where you are until you decide where you would rather be...

Or where you belong... or don't belong...
Or where is healthiest for you...
Or where you can most respect yourself...
Or what you can live with and what you can't...
Or where you can call home and truly be happy...

Although I think I've done a lot of growing up and am finally at that place, I'll still hold onto that card, and I will never forget the face of the kindly old man who gave it to me, nor the tangible piece of wisdom he gifted me with a decade ago.

White workers of the South
Miners,
Farmers,
Mechanics,
Mill Hands,
Shop girls,
Railway men,
Servants,
Tobacco workers,
Sharecroppers,
GREETINGS!

I am the black worker,
Listen:
That the land might be ours,
And the mines and the factories and the office towers
At Harlan, Richmond, Gastonia, Atlanta, New Orleans;
That the plants and the roads and the tools of power
Be ours:

Let us forget what Booker T. said,
"Separate as the fingers."

Let us become instead, you and I,
One single hand
That can united rise
To smash the old dead dogmas of the past-
To kill the lies of color
That keep the rich enthroned
And drive us to the time-clock and the plow
Helpless, stupid, scattered, and alone-as now-
Race against race,
Because one is black,
Another white of face.

Let us new lessons learn,
All workers,
New life-ways make,
One union form:
Until the future burns out
Every past mistake
Let us together, say:
"You are my brother, black or white,
You my sister-now-today!"
For me, no more, the great migration to the North.
Instead: migration into force and power-
Tuskegee with a new flag on the tower!
on every lynching tree, a poster crying FREE
Because, O poor white workers,
You have linked your hands with me.

We did not know that we were brothers.
Now we know!
out of that brotherhood
Let power grow!
We did not know
That we were strong.
Now we see
In union lies our strength.
Let unions be
The force that breaks the time-clock,
Smashes misery,
Takes land,
Takes factories,
Takes office towers,
Takes tools and banks and mines.
Railroads, ships and dams,
Until the forces of the world
Are ours!

White worker,
Here is my hand.

Today,
We're Man to Man.

Caelica 56: "All My Senses, Like Beacon's Flame"

All my senses, like beacon's flame,
Gave alarum to desire
To take arms in Cynthia's name
And set all my thoughts on fire:
Fury's wit persuaded me,
Happy love was hazard's heir,
Cupid did best shoot and see
In the night where smooth is fair;
Up I start believing well
To see if Cynthia were awake;
Wonders I saw, who can tell?
And thus unto myself I spake:
"Sweet God Cupid, where am I,
That by pale Diana's light,
Such rich beauties do espy,
As harm our senses with delight?
Am I borne up to the skies?
See where Jove and Venus shine,
Showing in her heavenly eyes
That desire is divine.
Look where lies the milken way,
Way unto that dainty throne,
Where while all the Gods would play,
Vulcan thinks to dwell alone."
I gave reins to this conceit,
Hope went on the wheel of lust;
Fancy's scales are false of weight,
Thoughts take thought that go of trust.
I stepped forth to touch the sky,
I a God by Cupid dreams;
Cynthia, who did naked lie,
Runs away like silver streams,
Leaving hollow banks behind
Who can neither forward move,
Nor, if rivers be unkind,
Turn away or leave to love.
There stand I, like Arctic pole,
Where Sol passeth o'er the line,
Mourning my benighted soul,
Which so loseth light divine.
There stand I like men that preach
From the execution place,
At their death content to teach
All the world with their disgrace.
He that lets his Cynthia lie
Naked on a bed of play,
To say prayers ere she die,
Teacheth time to run away.
Let no love‑desiring heart
In the stars go seek his fate,
Love is only Nature's art.
Wonder hinders Love and Hate.
None can well behold with eyes
But what underneath him lies.

"I suspect we have internal senses. The mind's eye since Shakespeare's time has been proverbial; and we have also a mind's ear. To say nothing of dreams, one certainly can listen to one's own thoughts, and hear them, or believe that one hears them: the strongest argument adducible in favour of our hearing any thing."

I received this in an email a while back. It is something to ponder:

Life is a theater--invite your audience carefully. Not everyone is spiritually healthy and mature enough to have a front row seat in our lives. There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a distance. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you let go, or at least minimize your time with draining, negative, incompatible, not-going-anywhere relationships/friendships/fellowships!

Observe the relationships around you. Pay attention to: which ones lift and which ones lean? Which ones encourage and which ones discourage? Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill? When you leave certain people,
do you feel better or feel worse? Which ones always have drama or don't really understand, know and appreciate you and the gift that lies within you? When you seek growth, peace of mind, love and truth, the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the
FRONT ROW and who should be moved to the balcony of your life.

You cannot change the people around you..but you can change the people you are around. Pray for Godly wisdom and discernment and choose wisely the people who sit in the FRONT ROW of your life.

Here is a favorite poem of mine that lately has been on my mind:

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)

THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
