Three things I loved to do with my sons:
1) take them to the park and let them run wild and push them with merriment on the swings at the park.

2) late at night, when both of them were restless before sleep, I loved to read stories to them.

3) my sons loved to act out randomly as if there were movie stars or future hip-hop artists or skateboard junkies with clever witticisms that only youthful boys could dream of, so I made them a 'fort'of sorts and gave them specially made movie-actor credentials and helped them collect all kinds of theatrical wardrobe memorabilia.

I spent a week in SF, in one of those gliding chairs, holding Anika. She was so tiny and sleepy and warm.

*Every weekend spent with my cheeky nephew. He's a delight, he's curious and comical and engaged and manipulative and charming. And constantly learning new things. :)

Holding this small bundle of life in my arms as I sang to her, fed her and rocked her to sleep in my arms.

Talking and listening to the 11, 12 and 13 year olds in the Sunday School class I lead. I am there to try and help these young people make sense of this world and their place and strength in it. Really, sometimes I learn from them.

I love to just hang out with kids and let them talk, dream, and give them validation.

That is a good/difficult one to answer... I've had a whole lot of experience with loss and grief, you'd think I'd be a pro.

I process my grief by:


Recognizing that it's made up of a myriad of emotions (stages), that there will be triggers, that it will ebb and flow, that it will always be with me, able to be tapped and brought to the surface, and that the strength of the grief will lessen as time goes by - and that I have to submit to it, go through it, let each stage wash over and through me...

Talking about it - in therapy, with family and friends, through writing and art and music.

Finding strength in the love and bond I shared with the person I've lost.

DareDevil - many of my family members are blind, and I swear they have supersonic hearing and spacial recognition abilities. (You could be on a 3 hour road trip, and my grandfather would say, "We should be passing the old water tower right about now," and we were!) DareDevil took the concept of the actual upsides of a disability and magnified them to make them superpowers. I love it.

It's called the Wick Effect (google it-essentially the oil in your body acts like oil or wax in a candle, with your clothing or blankets acting as a wick), and if you'll do a little research, you'll see most "spontaneous human combustion" victims were smokers.

One of my dress shirts and silk ties... nothing else but a smile that makes any other words completely unnecessary.

Garter Belts, because I think they are HOT! I've only seen them once, was mesmerized by them-- and she was so amused by my reaction that she kind of directed my attention elsewhere before I got to really enjoy the look and feel of exploring them on her.

Sweatpants or boxer shorts and a tank top or t-shirt-- because it tells me she is comfortable enough with me just to relax and be herself.

*I cursed at my mother once (when I was 17), I called her a "fucking bitch" :| and earned the only slap I've ever gotten from her.

*I told a big lie at the end of my relationship with T. (my British partner) it was really unnecessary and I made a painful (but necessary) breakup much much harder on both of us.

I've spent a lot of my grown up life learning to use my words, take my space and understand my feelings before speaking from a place of anger, frustration, impatience, fear or loneliness. So I try really really hard not to say hurtful things. And I've gotten better at not being hurtful year after year. That said...I'm far from perfect and
